'Dragon's Nest'
I was going through old sketchbooks and I found this one I'm honestly surprised hasn't disintegrated.
It was this little colored pencil drawing from middle school or high school on a stray piece of notebook paper -- the thing even had math work (that likely never got turned in) on the back.
So I decided to try my hand at redrawing it.

Welcome to the masterpost of all [256] of my FavreMySabre AUs/OCs/concepts :]
Feel free to ask questions or just give me a number between 1 and [256]! Or directly ask CWK!Sabre or MCRP!Time for what something means, navigation (i.e., genres, specific characters), or just questions on the multiverse these all belong to!
264 AUs. 256 AUs w/o dsmp, 186 w/o dreams (or dsmp). 8 dsmp-exclusive AUs were included here, I apologize.
Edit: at the bottom of the main list ID, will be a "changelog," where I put additional AUs that I didn't have in the og list. Once a page has been filled, there will be a new picture of it and a proper ID like the original pages.
That way, nothing gets confused. Also, the AU number will change as needed. AU names will most likely stay the same, and if they do change, I will include the og in the changelog.

Under the cut is the digitalized list/"ID"!
I got this done sooner than I thought tbh. Had to go thru my old tablet, my art binders, and all my notes on my phone. Worth it, this is SO USEFUL, my god!

Just curious
So like your brain not letting you do the thing or not do the thing without an excuse is like an executive functioning thing, right?
Can you tell if your executive functioning thing is related to ocd? Like can you differentiate that feeling from something else?
Well, yes and no. No in the sense that I have like Level "I was born yesterday" skill at even recognizing my OCD to the point it's a meme. And I know this probably wasn't intended for that "asks will be responded with a doodle" but I have my tablet out and why not (will appear later)
OCD and executive dysfunction can go hand and hand a lot. A lot of the time I get executive dysfunction if I'm burnt out or overwhelmed or overloaded with issues and stressors or if my obsessive-compulsive things are overloading me with too many things to focus on that I can't really do anything. Usually I know that they're interacting cause I'm theoretically having a flare up and as a result just can't really do anything or it is really really hard to get my brain up and out of the freeze "error 404 brain not found" feeling
But specifically with "brain not letting you do thing" in executive dysfunction and OCD are very very different in my experience. I will be using one of XIV's OCD things as an example because I am horrible at looking and understanding how mine work but I understand some of his larger ones
Tumblr media
Within OCD, the "brain not letting you" is more of a "will constantly and relentlessly repeat over and over" and "will cause distress and throw anxiety / cortisol at you" and "will make you tense and stressed out" form of "not let you" and it is a very highly activated feeling. The brain is activated, stressed out, and on some level of a fight-flight response because something is >wrong< and the brain is sending off alarm signals about it being wrong.
Specificlly an example of one of XIV's is that he >can't< wear colors. He "can" wear colors, and he can make himself put on colors, and there is nothing in his brain innately making it difficult to do the action to put on a colored piece of clothing, but for one reason or the next, if he sees that he is wearing a color on his upper body that the brain does not agree with (which is most colors beyond an accent or camo) it will chronically be one of the only things he can think about and he will get an feeling of disgust like the color itself is soiling "his vibes" and often you'll see him have a sour mood until he can "fix it" and change into an appropriately colored thing.
The brain is not stopping him from getting up and wearing a colored shirt, but the brain is threatening him with chronic annoyance, feeling dirty, and stress if he does.
Executive dysfunction on the other hand often feels a lot more like a massive fog or like something isn't connecting or a part of the brain isn't working right and actually doing something or changing gears is extremely difficult. If I wanted to change my shirt, my brain wouldn't punish me or stress me out if I got up and put it on, but with executive dysfunction my "brain is not letting me" because it is not working right and has moderately seemed to disable my ability to get up in the first place.
Very nice question, very fun to answer and explain. I miss talking about OCD tbh XD I used to run a BFRB blog @eyes-of-a-trichster before this one because we were focused on healing in that realm and lowkey I was obsessed with reading and literature on OCD and BFRBs before I was obsessed with readings on DID, C-PTSD, and trauma.
It's an old fun favorite nerdy topic so thanks for the fun ask ^^

Hey C-puff I know you don't know who I am, But I am the person behind the account Error-404-ending-not-found, the kid who used to send in asks to the time scar blog. Since then I've went from a tablet to a laptop and gotten older. It's been a while and I forgot about tumblr, but then one night I thought "Hey time scar, I want to see their art and posts again". So I looked you up and found you. Your posts and art got me back into tumblr and blogging. Thanks so much for being you!
aaaaah this is such a heart warming ask ;w; I’m sorry I didn’t reply to it sooner (it’s been a day and a half) I really hope you’ve been enjoying tumblr again. It’s a bit of a dumpster fire but it’s OUR dumpster fire, you know?
Thank you so much for sending this to me. Time Scar is slower as I have to devote a certain amount of time to income, but it’s still going! And I hope in time when my situation changes I can once again go back to several pages a week. But in the meantime, just… thank you very much!

Website Maintenance Checklist to Avoid Technical Glitches
What is Website Maintenance?
Website maintenance keeps your website secure and performant, which reduces the chances of downtime.
When you own a website, you don't just write articles and publish them for the world to read. You design, plan, write, research, test, implement and maintain it. You don't even need any special coding skills; however, keeping your site updated is not something that can be ignored.
Read on to find out how you can keep your website healthy and updated by following a few simple steps.
Benefits of Website Maintenance
Updating your website regularly keeps its content fresh and adds new features that may benefit users as well as search engines.
Your website will be more secure from hackers or failures due to outdated software or operating systems.
You won't lose traffic if your site goes down for any reason. This is particularly important as Google ranks websites higher in web searches when they're up and running, rather than offline.
An updated website can gain you more visitors and free traffic.
Website maintenance is less costly than dealing with unforeseen problems that are difficult to fix once they arise, such as broken pages or lost traffic due to downtime.
Maintenance Checklist to Avoid Technical Glitches
Here's a simple checklist of the main things you should do before making any website changes:
Check Your Website Speed
Every second your website takes to load is time that potential customers spend away from your business. Slow loading times have been shown to reduce user engagement, which doesn't give you a good return on investment toward search engine rankings.
Test your website's speed with Pingdom tools, which send requests from various locations around the world and tell you how long each one takes to load. Then check this data against industry benchmarks (1 second is the ideal) to see if any improvements need to be made.
Renew Website Domain Name and SSL Certificate
If your website still uses an HTTP protocol instead of HTTPS, you should change that immediately since it's more secure. You can also improve trust by installing an SSL certificate on your site, which tells web browsers that they are safe to transact with you online. Keep in mind that changing domain names is easy these days due to services like Namecheap, which lets you switch over all your DNS records and other elements easily and affordably.
Check Your Backups
Backups are a necessary part of website maintenance because they help you recover lost website content and reduce the chances of a crash if something goes wrong with the website.
The various ways backups can be done is by using:
A- The server's backup function (most web hosts provide one)
B- A software such as Akeeba Backup to set up daily, weekly, and monthly automated backups for your whole site or specific areas/modules of your site, including database and files
C- Manual backup to download and save all changes made on your site -images, pages, videos, etc. To manually saved in external storage devices like pen drive, hard drive, etc. to keep copies for disaster recovery later. For people with larger websites, this may require a backup plugin for specific CMS systems such as WordPress.
Your website might not be fully protected if you're only doing backups occasionally, or aren't creating offsite backups. If a hacker wants access to your site badly enough, they'll find a way to breach it if backups aren't included.
It's not that difficult to keep your website backed up regularly. Services like CodeGuard make backing up and restoring websites easy because you can do it from the same place where you manage other services for your website.      You should also consider setting up offsite backups at an external location, preferably in another country or hemisphere, so your data is less likely to be lost due to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances.
Backups are like insurance policies – don't expect anything to happen but still hope for the best! If something does happen, you will have a backup to save the day. You can automate this process or at least check them manually once in a while.
Security updates and bug fixes
To continue using the most recent versions of PHP, MySQL, etc., security updates must be applied regularly. If these applications are not updated, website visitors may face security vulnerabilities.
As far as bugs are concerned, WordPress is one of the most popular CMS systems at the moment with thousands of plugins and themes to choose from. Bugs are common in these types of software because they are created by voluntary developers who usually write free code for the WordPress community without expecting financial returns.
Check Your Website Responsiveness
A mobile-friendly website is one that has been specifically designed for viewing on smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. If yours isn't responsive yet (and most aren't), it's likely losing valuable traffic. If you can, redesign your site so it responds to different screen resolutions and adjusts according to the viewer's preferred device.
Check Your Website for Broken Links and 404 Errors
Fixing broken links is important because search engine crawlers monitor these errors and report them as signs that your site isn't well-maintained or reliable. You can use free resources like Xenu Link Sleuth to find broken links on your website. Once you've located them, simply delete or replace those pages with working content.
Broken links or 404 errors will appear when any link on your website points to an incorrect destination or the resource is not found in the location where it should be, resulting in visitor frustration and abandoning their shopping carts. To fix these types of errors search for all wrong destinations and redirect them to relevant pages you want them to land on. You can use free tools like Xenu's Link Sleuth and Screaming Frog SEO Spider for this purpose.
Many security issues arise due to user error, along with careless mistakes that are easy enough to avoid if you're aware of them. While maintaining a WordPress blog, for example, you should use strong usernames and passwords, avoid using plugins that aren't regularly updated, edit your .htaccess file to increase website security, and always remember to use reputable hosting services.
Reply to Form Inquiries
Serving customers is an integral part of any successful business. Unfortunately, if you don't have the time or resources for this, they might head to your competitor's site instead. In order to keep sales coming in from all channels (including the contact form on your website), make sure you reply to prospects within one business day.
Reply to all inquiries that get posted on your contact forms (including queries submitted via emails). Even if it's a simple message like "We will try and get back to you as soon as possible," this shows that you care about customer service and helps build a rapport with your visitors.
Be sure you always have someone available who can read emails sent through your site's contact form and forward them along to the correct individuals within the organization so they're not left sitting in a spam folder or designated "social" folder.
Check Your Website Speed
Your website's speed is one of the biggest factors in how Google ranks your pages, so if yours isn't up to snuff you could be losing traffic. You should regularly check Google PageSpeed Insights, Pingdom Tools, and GTmetrix for tips on how to improve load time.
A faster website means increased visitor satisfaction, higher rankings in search engine results pages (SERPs), and lower bounce rates, which is why page loading times should be regularly checked. Tools like Google Analytics offers the option to view average loading times for specific pages on your site. If it's taking too long to load individual posts or static images -try reducing the size of these files through re-compression or using alternative options like SiteGround SuperCacher), this will increase website speed dramatically.
Measure Your Website Performance
If you're looking for ways to measure website performance after implementing improvements, try using services like WebPagetest, New Relic, or ClickDensity. These tools will tell you how your website looks from a performance perspective and help you gauge whether or not it's faster since the last time you checked.
Apart from measuring speed, Google PageSpeed Insight will give you a detailed report on how fast various files on your site load and which ones need immediate attention. Optimize everything from texts to images with this free tool for a bigger and better user experience.
Renew Your Domain Name and SSL certificate
The internet has come a long way in the past few years, but nobody knows exactly what's coming next to change everything yet again. You can prepare by making sure your domain name is renewed so that another company doesn't snatch it up when you're not looking.
Domain names and SSL certificates often expire without users knowing about them. So keep track of them by renewing them prior to they come close to expiry; otherwise, you might lose SEO benefits as well as search rankings if they become disabled unexpectedly.
These are some of the most overlooked parts of web hosting but they play a crucial role in delivering an exceptional user experience.
Renewing the domain name ensures that it stays with its current host if there is a need to move sites from their current hosts due to poor support or high costs. Domain names should be renewed every year for this reason. In order to be sure that the process is done in time, set up a calendar reminder on your phone or PC weeks before the expiration date of the domain name.
If possible, renew your domain names for multi-year periods instead of just one year at a time. This will save both money and stress down the line because you won't have to worry about losing your blog address if something goes wrong with your payment history.
Update Your Copyright
If you want to show site visitors that your blog is up-to-date and current, make sure you update the copyright year on your site. Even though it doesn't have any bearing on search rankings, this simple step will avoid confusing or frustrating readers who visit your site regularly.
It doesn't matter how many times your site was updated last year; by setting the updated dates on all pages regularly you are sending out messages of freshness to search engines which will definitely boost up rankings over time.
Many website owners aren't aware of what maintenance entails. If yours has gotten a little behind in recent months/years, now would be a good time to enforce some more stringent policies so that all members of the Internet community have equal access to it. These are just ten things related to a website maintenance that you can use as part of your checklist -- there are many more small steps you can take every day to keep your online presence running smoothly.
Conclusion
These are some of the most important points to check when it comes to maintaining a high-quality website for visitors and search engines alike so… If you care about your site's performance, user experience and would like others to visit again - follow this checklist once in a while.
You need to make sure that your technology is up-to-date, secure, and able to handle anything the future may hold. To do this, you will have to schedule regular maintenance of your site in order to avoid technical glitches. Think about it as an investment for the future - with time it will definitely pay off!

Importance of On-Page SEO
In Today’s era, everyone uses the internet to satisfy their personal needs which include some topic information, shopping, etc. and if your website does not stand according to their expectations, you will lose ranking on SERP (Search Engine Result Page ) very Quickly. This means getting searched by people and not giving proper results can lose ranking and will increase your bounce rate. Good Content is the main factor to rank your website. If you want to build a good reputation on an online platform you can’t afford to ignore on-page SEO
Top on-page Factors that affect Webpage Ranking1.Site Speed
We live in an age where we want everything fast and the same applies to websites. Even a second’s delay in loading a webpage can reduce your conversions by 7%. You can check your website’s performance in speed using this Google page speed insight tool. If you come up lacking, you can do a variety of things to speed up your site, including employing speedy hosting, a robust CDN (content delivery network) and image compression software, minifying JavaScript, HTML, and CSS resources, etc.
2.Crawlability
Your Webpage will be of no use to you or users if it can not be found, crawled, and indexed by search engines. If this happens then you have to check errors, you must go through your robots.txt file to check if any important pages have been mistakenly blocked by Google bot. Google Webmaster will help you to keep eye on your site and avoid such problems. Additionally, bring into effective action and will help web page crawler to understand your content better and might even earn a rich search result. If anyhow you are receiving many backlinks to a 404 page, make sure that you do a 301 redirect to a related, relevant page in order to hold visitors’ attention and not lose any goodwill
3.Mobile Responsive
This is the most important factor of Onpage SEO because most people surf the internet through cellphones or Tablets. Hence, it’s very important to have your website Mobile Friendly as well as a Desktop. Especially after Google’s 2018 Mobile-first indexing stance. While you must ensure that both versions of your site have exactly the same content. With this, you have to pay attention to other details like not having intrusive pop-ups, small fonts that are hard to read on the mobile versions, and like this. For these issues, you can use the Google Mobile-Friendly Test tool to find such problems and how mobile-responsive your site design is.
4.Content Tags
The Title tag of your webpage plays a Crucial rule to be in  Google search results. Make sure that you place your primary search keyword as close to the start of the title tag as you possibly can without making it seem unnatural. The Meta Description plays an equal role and must contain a decent framing of keywords that matter. Don’t forget to keep your title tags and meta descriptions clear, relevant, and well written. Title tags should not be longer than 60 characters long and descriptions more than 160 characters. If they are longer, then that will cut off by Google and the user will not be able to see them as a whole. Besides that make sure your post’s headings and subheadings carry the H1 & H2 HTML tags respectively so that search engines understand what your web page is all about.
Numerous CMS (content administration frameworks) like WordPress have this component worked into their code yet once in a while, heavy themes can keep it from happening. Hence, double-check your site code to ensure that your post/page has only one H1 tag and try to include your primary keyword in it.
5.Multimedia
There are plenty of information seekers or readers on the internet, who prefer in-depth, long-tail content that presents lots of relevant information on a topic of choice, infographics lovers, etc. Whatever your business/brand niche, it is important to include a variety of multimedia in your content, including high-resolution videos and images. This will help you to engage your visitors. But Remember you put relevant multimedia to suit your Google SERP and web traffic needs, including using web fonts instead of embedding text within images, putting important keywords into the video description/transcripts and image alt text, etc.
6.Use of Schema When Necessary
Schema Markup plays a very important role to help search engines understand what your website exactly offers. For Example, a search engine result page (SERP) with images, reviews, or ratings is much more attractive than a normal search result. Basically having images or videos increase the clickability of the website. However, you should not use schema for every Web page. Only use it for the Web pages which you want to use to generate more traffic for or the ones which have enough relevant information to be presented in the search results themselves.
7.Use of Internal Linking
One of the critical components of on-page SEO, internal linking is the key determiner of how accessible your Web pages are. Well-executed internal linking permits web indexes to know about your other Web pages and makes it simple for clients to get to those pages for more information. This way, users can spend more time on your website, which increases the possibility of their conversion.

7 Essential Elements Your Website Should Have
Tumblr media
Your website is one of the most powerful weapons in your digital marketing arsenal. Your website can expose you to new market segments, grow your customer base, showcase your business, and persuade potential customers that your product or services are exactly what they are looking for. A strong, engaging website which is designed for a great user experience that converts visitors to customers is a literal gold mine to grow your customer base, and increase your bottom line. However, as much as it has never been more important to have a great website, it equally has never been this challenging to keep up with your competition and stay on top of your website game. With a staggering 1.7 billion live websites now online, and many of them precision-designed for SEO, CRO and UX, the competition is fierce. This means if you want your website to work for you and deliver all the benefits that it has the potential to provide, you need to make sure it covers all the bases, and contains the most important elements to make it effective. Here are the top 7 essential elements your website should have in order to best serve your business.
1. Strong Branding
Whether you are a major global brand or a small local business, your brand is everything. Your brand tells your customers who you are, helps to build trust, and ultimately convinces them to buy your product. As with all aspects of your communications strategy, your website must represent your brand inside and out. When designing your site make sure to keep your brand values, tone and messaging at the forefront of your mind so that absolutely every aspect of your site promotes your brand.
2. Mobile-Friendly Design
As you probably already know, we are now living in a multi-device environment. Users regularly use multiple devices as part of their daily lives, including but not limited to desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and smart speakers. Arguably, the type of device that is winning the race is the smart phone, with more than half of all website traffic now coming from mobile devices. When it comes to website development, this means that it critical for your website to look equally stunning on all devices, and above all, on mobile ones.
3. Divided Screen
One of the leading trends in website design is split screen design: this means dividing the screen into two sections, each able to scroll independently of one another (and sometimes even at different scroll paces!). This not only provides a more interesting and more engaging design for the site, it literally doubles the amount of content and information you can display to users at the same time.
4. SEO
Great search engine optimisation is absolutely essential for any business in 2020. With 87% of customers searching for products online first and foremost, if your site is not optimised for Google you are missing out on a great deal of web traffic, and with it a large number of potential customers. SEO is something you simply cannot afford to overlook, and so it is worth investing time and resources to get this right: do extensive keyword research, use other SEO tactics such as content marketing, track your site’s SEO performance, and if needed consult with SEO experts to make sure you are at the top of your SEO game.
5. Service Offerings
There are many types of sites, ranging from one-page landing pages to extensive sites with many categories, subcategories, regular blog posts and so on. The kind of site you need will depend on your business, and budget to build and maintain it will also be a consideration here. However, regardless of the size of your site, make sure that you include the basic information about the products and services you offer. Users will be reaching your site having found you on Google, being referred from elsewhere, or because they’re already aware of your business and want to learn more. In any of these cases, you want to convey to them what you sell and why they should buy it.
6. A Sense of Humor
Humor is one of humanity’s great unifiers, and using it on your website is a powerful way to create trust and promote better engagement, and strengthen your relationship with your customers. There will be a few exceptions to this: certain types of businesses may feel that humor is simply inappropriate for their brand. However, as a general rule, including some humor on your site can go a long way. This is particularly true when it is included in expected places, such as on the most mundane parts of your site like the 404 error page.
7. Persuasive Calls to Action
At the end of the day, your website serves one main purpose: to get visitors to buy your products or services. Make sure it does this effectively by including plenty of persuasive calls to action on your site. This is an important part of the sales funnel, which moves users through to ultimately buying what you’re selling. With modern web design techniques and resources, you can be creative with your CTA’s in order to better engage users, such as using animated or pop-up elements which call on them to sign up, book a consultation, or buy a product. Your website does not need to represent a huge investment for your business. With a little research, you can learn how to make a website for free or at least with a modest budget. Whether you build your own site or hire a professional to do it for you, make sure you include these 7 essential elements to ensure you have a strong, effective website that will support your business to grow and succeed. Case Summaries – Supreme Court of the United States (April 20, 2020) and N.C. Court of Appeals (April 21, 2020)
This post summarizes an opinion issued by the Supreme Court of the United States on April 20, 2020, and opinions issued by the Court of Appeals of North Carolina on April 21, 2020.
The Sixth Amendment establishes a right to a unanimous jury verdict that applies to the state courts.
Ramos v. Louisiana, ___ U.S. ___ (2019). the Supreme Court reversed a Louisiana state court and held that the Sixth Amendment gives defendants a right to a unanimous jury verdict that applies to the states. The defendant was convicted of murder in 2016 based on a 10–2 jury verdict, which was a sufficient basis for conviction under then-existing Louisiana state law. (Oregon is the only other state that allows convictions based on nonunanimous verdicts.) Justice Gorsuch wrote a majority opinion joined in full by Justices Ginsburg and Breyer and in part by Justices Sotomayor and Kavanaugh, concluding based on the historical context in which the Sixth Amendment was adopted that the entitlement to an impartial jury included the right, applicable in both the federal courts and the state courts, to a unanimous jury to be convicted. The Court disclaimed the precedential value of Apodaca v. Oregon, 406 U.S. 404 (1972), a case in which a four-Justice plurality plus a lone Justice resolving the case on other grounds upheld an Oregon conviction that was based on a nonunanimous verdict. Justice Sotomayor wrote a concurring opinion saying that Apodaca must be overruled, not only because of its dubious reasoning, but also because of the racially discriminatory origins of the Louisiana and Oregon laws the case upheld. Justice Kavanaugh likewise wrote separately to concur and to share more extended thoughts on the application of stare decisis in this case. Justice Thomas concurred in the judgment, noting his agreement that the requirement for a unanimous jury verdict applies to the states, but under his own view that it applies through the Fourteenth Amendment Privileges or Immunities Clause, not the Due Process Clause. Justice Alito wrote a dissent, joined by Chief Justice Roberts and joined in part by Justice Kagan, arguing that the lower court should have been affirmed under Apodaca.
Though a defendant who pled guilty may seek post-conviction DNA testing under G.S. 15A-269, the defendant failed to establish that the testing results would be material to his defense.
State v. Alexander, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). In 1992, the defendant pled guilty to second-degree murder for the killing of a gas station attendant during a robbery. In 2016, after learning that an informant implicated another person in the crime, the defendant filed a motion to test the DNA and fingerprints on evidence found at the scene. The trial court denied the motion and the defendant appealed. The Court of Appeals affirmed. As a threshold matter the court said that the defendant was not barred from seeking testing under G.S. 15A-269 because he pled guilty. It rejected the State’s argument that the statute’s reference to the defendant’s “defense” and the requirement for a “verdict” meant that the law only applied to defendants found guilty after a trial. On the merits, though, the court concluded that the defendant failed to meet his burden of showing that the results of the requested testing would be material to his defense. With the “high bar” required to establish materiality after a guilty plea, even the presence of another’s DNA on the evidence would not necessarily exclude the defendant’s involvement in the crime in light of the substantial evidence of his guilt. A judge concurring in the result would have concluded that the Supreme Court’s decision in State v. Sayre, 255 N.C. App. 215 (2017), aff’d per curiam, 371 N.C. 468 (2018), bars a defendant who pled guilty from post-conviction DNA testing under G.S. 15A-269.
A probation condition requiring the defendant to comply with drug treatment recommended as a result of an evaluation by TASC was proper under G.S. 15A-1343(b1)(10).
State v. Chadwick, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). The defendant was convicted and placed on probation for several crimes, including drug-related crimes. The trial judge ordered as a special condition of probation that the defendant “[r]eport for initial evaluation by TASC” and “participate in all further evaluation, counseling, treatment, or education programs recommended as a result of that evaluation.” The Court of Appeals upheld the condition, rejecting the defendant’s argument that it was an improper delegation of the trial court’s authority to require participation in treatment dictated by the TASC evaluation and not specifically ordered by the court. The appellate court concluded that the condition was reasonably related to his drug-related conviction and his rehabilitation, and therefore proper as a discretionary condition under G.S. 15A-1343(b1)(10).
In the absence of conflicting evidence on an essential element, the trial court did not commit plain error by not instructing on a lesser-included offense.
State v. Coleman, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). The defendant was convicted of trafficking in opium among other crimes. He argued on appeal that the trial court committed plain error when, despite the lack of a request by the defendant, it failed to instruct the jury on the lesser-included offense of selling hydrocodone. The Court of Appeals found no error. The court applied the rule that the trial judge should instruct the jury on any lesser included offense supported by any version of the evidence when there is conflicting evidence on an essential element of the charged. Here, there was no conflicting evidence. An analyst testified that the total weight of the drug tablets sold by the defendant was over 8 grams, while another witness testified that the defendant sold twenty “10-milligram hydrocodone” pills. The testimony was not conflicting, however, because only the total weight of the pill mixture mattered in establishing the elements of the charged offense. In the absence of conflicting evidence, the trial judge did not err by not instructing on a lesser-included offense.
  (1) The trial court did not err by denying the defendant’s petition for writ of certiorari; (2) The defendant’s writ of mandamus was an improper substitute for appeal, and filed in the wrong court.
State v. Diaz-Tomas, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). In 2015, the defendant was charged with impaired driving and driving without an operator’s license. He failed to appear on the charges in 2016, which prompted the district court to issue an order for arrest and the State to dismiss the case with leave. In 2018 the defendant was arrested on the OFA, ordered to appear, and then arrested again for once more failing to appear. In January 2019 he filed a motion in district court seeking to reinstate the charges that had been dismissed with leave, which the district court denied. In July 2019, the defendant filed a petition for writ of certiorari in superior court, seeking review of the district court’s denial of his motion to reinstate the charges. The superior court denied the petition, leading the defendant to file a petition for writ of certiorari in the Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals concluded that the superior court did not err by denying the petition. Certiorari is a discretionary writ, and the defendant did not show that the superior court’s decision was unsupported by reason or otherwise entirely arbitrary.
(2) The defendant also filed two other petitions in the Court of Appeals: a writ of mandamus seeking to compel the district court to grant his motion to reinstate the charges, and a motion asking the court to take judicial notice of the Wake County Local Judicial Rules. As to the writ of mandamus, the Court of Appeals concluded over a dissent that it was improper for two reasons—first, that it was being used as a substitute for an appeal or certiorari, and second that it should have been filed in superior court, not the appellate division. As to the motion to take judicial notice, the court did not need to resolve it to decide the case. Finally, the Court of Appeals declined to consider the defendant’s argument that the district court erred by denying his motion to reinstate charges, unanimously concluding that the issue was not properly before the court.
A judge dissenting in part included additional facts about the procedural history of the case. After the defendant’s initial failures to appear, he did appear when his case was calendared as an “add-on” case in December 2018, but the State declined to reinstate the charges. The dissenting judge agreed with the majority that mandamus was not the proper remedy, but she would have concluded that the superior abused its discretion by denying the petition for writ of certiorari. In the absence of an order from superior court revealing the basis for its rationale in denying the petition, and in light of the defendant’s allegations, which she described as “cogent” and “well-supported,” she would have remanded the case for a hearing and decision on the merits.
  (1) The trial court retained jurisdiction to amend a sentence until the time for notice of appeal expires; (2) Amendment of a drug trafficking sentence to include the maximum term that corresponds to the mandatory minimum sentence was a clerical correction that the trial court could make outside of the defendant’s presence.
State v. Lebeau, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). (1) When the defendant was convicted of drug trafficking, the sentence initially announced by the trial judge was “a mandatory 70 months” of active imprisonment. The following Monday (five days later), without the defendant being present, the court entered an amended judgment stating both the minimum and maximum sentence: 70 to 93 months. The defendant argued on appeal that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to amend the sentence when it did because the defendant had already appealed by that point. The Court of Appeals disagreed, concluding that, under G.S. 15A-1448(a)(3), the jurisdiction of the trial court is divested when notice of appeal has been given and the time for giving notice of appeal has expired. For an appeal to the appellate division, that time period is 14 days. N.C. R. App. P. 4(a)(2). Because only 5 days had passed at the time of change, the time for appeal had not expired, and the trial court therefore retained jurisdiction. (2) The defendant argued in the alternative that amending the judgment in her absence deprived her of her right to be present at sentencing. The appellate court again disagreed, concluding that the amended judgment did not amount to a “substantive change” to the original sentence. Because the 93-month maximum that accompanies a 70-month minimum is statutorily required under G.S. 90-95(h)(4), it was not the product of judicial discretion. The record showed that the trial court understood from the outset that the sentence was statutorily mandatory, and the amendment was therefore clerical in nature and not a substantive change.
Failure to appoint counsel or secure a valid waiver of counsel for more than a year after the defendant was charged violated the defendant’s Sixth Amendment right to counsel.
State v. Lindsey, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). In March 2018 the defendant was charged with multiple crimes after breaking into a gas station. In August 2018, the trial court first addressed the defendant’s right to counsel. The defendant said that he did not want a lawyer, but then, when asked by the judge, “You’re not just waiving court appointed counsel, you’re waiving all counsel; is that correct?,” the defendant replied that he was “simply waiving court appointed counsel.” The defendant signed a waiver of counsel form, checking only box one, waiving his right to assigned counsel. The trial judge appointed standby counsel. The defendant argued several preliminary motions without the assistance of counsel between August 2018 and when his case came on for trial in March 2019. At that point, a different judge presiding over the trial noticed that the defendant had waived court-appointed counsel but not all counsel. After a full colloquy with the judge, the defendant checked box 2 on a new form, waiving his right to all assistance of counsel. The defendant was convicted and sentenced.
On appeal, the defendant argued that the trial court erred by failing to appoint counsel or secure a valid waiver of counsel until more than a year after the defendant’s initial arrest. Over a dissent, the Court of Appeals agreed with him and ordered a new trial. The majority first established that the issue was properly preserved for appellate review, noting that prejudicial violations of a statutory mandate (here G.S. 15A-1242) are preserved for appeal notwithstanding the defendant’s failure to object at trial, and the Supreme Court of North Carolina has recently reviewed unobjected-to Sixth Amendment denial of counsel claims. The court then concluded that the trial court erred by allowing the defendant to proceed unrepresented without first obtaining a proper waiver of all counsel after a proper inquiry under G.S. 15A-1242. The August 2018 colloquy was flawed to the extent that the trial court did not ask whether the defendant understood and appreciated the consequences of his decision to proceed without representation, and in any event resulted only in a waiver of assigned counsel. The State failed to establish that the defendant’s self-representation through the pretrial period from August 2018 until the proper waiver colloquy in March 2019 was harmless beyond a reasonable doubt—which the court noted would have been difficult even if the State had tried, given the many issues addressed during the uncounseled period (possible plea negotiations, discovery, and evidentiary issues).
A dissenting judge would have concluded that the defendant failed to preserve the issue for appellate review.
  (1) Trial evidence did not support the charge of displaying an expired registration plate; (2) The propriety of a jury instruction was not properly before the Court of Appeals; (3) The defendant’s sentence to probation was improper when a fine only sentence was required.
State v. Money, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). The defendant was charged with driving while license revoked, operating a motor vehicle without displaying a current approved inspection certificate (G.S. 20-183.8(a)(1)), and displaying an expired registration plate (G.S. 20-111(2)) after being pulled over for driving his truck without a license plate. He was convicted of all three offenses, first in district court and then by a jury in superior court. (1) On appeal, the State conceded and the Court of Appeals agreed that the trial court erred by denying the defendant’s motion to dismiss the charge of displaying an expired registration plate. The defendant’s truck had no plate whatsoever, and so he was not displaying an expired one. (The court noted that the evidence would have supported a conviction under G.S. 20-111(1), driving without a current registration plate.) (2) As to the inspection certificate infraction, the defendant argued that there was insufficient evidence to support his conviction when the jury was instructed on a theory of guilt—here, display of an expired inspection certificate—that did not apply in his case when, again, he did not display any certificate. The Court of Appeals disagreed, concluding that display of an expired inspection is not one of multiple theories of guilt for this offense. As such, the jury instruction referencing display was erroneous, but the defendant did not object on that basis, and the issue was therefore not properly before the appellate court. (3) Finally, the State conceded and the Court of Appeals agreed that the defendant’s sentence was erroneous. Despite being Prior Conviction Level I with no prior convictions, the defendant received a 10-day suspended sentence with probation for this Class 3 misdemeanor. Under G.S. 15A-1340.23(d), unless otherwise provided for a specific offense, a Class 3 misdemeanor sentence for a defendant with no more than three prior convictions may consist of a fine only. The appellate court remanded for resentencing.
  (1) The State is not required to file a superseding information before trial in order to retain the trial court’s subject matter jurisdiction; (2) The trial court did not commit plain error by failing to give a guilty knowledge instruction when the defendant’s defense was that the drugs belonged to someone else.
State v. Stallings, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). (1) The defendant was indicted for trafficking in MDMA, among other charges. When the case came on for trial, the trial judge called in prospective jurors and questioned them about undue hardships and conflicts with the parties and informed them of the charges against the defendant. The prosecutor then requested a bench conference at which he pointed out that the substance in the lab report showed that the relevant substance was methamphetamine, not MDMA. The prosecutor gave the defendant the choice between having the State dismiss the MDMA charge and reindict for trafficking in methamphetamine, or waiving indictment and proceeding by bill of information. The defendant chose the latter and was convicted at trial. On appeal, the defendant argued that the trial court lacked subject matter jurisdiction because the State did not file the superseding information “before . . . commencement of trial” within the meaning of G.S. 15A-646. The Court of Appeals disagreed, concluding that G.S. 15A-646 does not place any timing deadline on the State, but rather merely imposes a ministerial duty on the judge to dismiss the initial charge if a superseding indictment or information is filed before trial. The appellate court also rejected the defendant’s argument that the trial court lacked subject matter jurisdiction because the defendant was not formally arraigned on the new charge, as the lack of formal arraignment is not revisable error when the defendant does not object and assert inadequate knowledge of the charge. (2) The defendant also argued that the trial court committed plain error by failing, despite the lack of a request or objection, to instruct the jury on the requirement that the defendant have guilty knowledge of the methamphetamine. The Court of Appeals rejected the argument, distinguishing an earlier case, State v. Coleman, 227 N.C. App. 354 (2013). In Coleman, the court found plain error when the trial court failed to instruct on guilty knowledge for a defendant convicted of trafficking heroin who knew he possessed drugs, but who thought he had marijuana and cocaine, not heroin. Here, the defendant denied any knowledge about the existence of the methamphetamine and argued that it belonged to someone else. Even assuming the trial court erred by not giving the instruction, the Court of Appeals concluded it would not rise to the level of plain error given the evidence against the defendant.
  (1) The defendant waived his right to severance when he did not file a motion to sever; (2) The admission of lay witness testimony on the defendant’s mental state was not reversible error; (3) The State presented sufficient evidence that the defendant attempted to kill the victim with premeditation and deliberation; (4) The trial court’s instruction on the malice element of attempted first-degree murder was not reversible error in light of the defendant’s use of a deadly weapon and the related circumstances; (5) The defendant was not entitled to a self-defense instruction.
State v. Yarborough, ___ N.C. App. ___, ___ S.E.2d ___ (Apr. 21, 2020). (1) The defendant was convicted after a jury trial of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and other serious felony charges after he shot and killed his former girlfriend and then pistol-whipped and fired a gun at another woman, a registered nurse. On appeal he argued that the that the trial court erred by joining the charges for trial. The defendant had objected to the State’s motion for joinder, but he never filed a motion to sever charges as provided in G.S. 15A-927. The Court of Appeals concluded that the defendant waived the issue, declined to review the issue in its discretion under Rule 2 of the Rules of Appellate Procedure, and further declined to consider whether he received ineffective assistance of counsel for his trial lawyer’s failure to file a motion to sever charges. The Court of Appeals deemed the latter issue more appropriate for a motion for appropriate relief filed in the trial court, and so dismissed that claim without prejudice.
(2) The defendant also argued that the trial court erred by allowing lay testimony on the defendant’s mental capacity from his second victim, a registered nurse. She answered questions from the State on how the defendant compared to “psych patients” she had dealt with, on whether the defendant was able to process his thoughts, and on whether he was in touch with reality. Though a lay witness may not offer a specific psychiatric diagnosis, the Court of Appeals—reviewing the issue for abuse of discretion—concluded in light of the evidence against the defendant that there was no reasonable possibility that the result of his trial would have been different if the trial court had excluded the testimony.
(3) Next, in light of the facts of the case, the Court of Appeals rejected the defendant’s argument that the trial court erred by denying his motion to dismiss the attempted first-degree murder charge for insufficiency of the evidence that he acted with premeditation and deliberation. The State proved, among other things, that the defendant said he would kill her and that he shot the door near the doorknob four to six times before kicking the door and yelling, which the court deemed sufficient evidence for the jury to reasonably conclude that the defendant attempted to kill the victim with premeditation and deliberation.
(4) The appellate court also concluded that the defendant could not demonstrate prejudicial error resulting from the trial court’s deadly weapon malice instruction. The defendant argued that the instruction could have been misleading to the extent that it allowed an inference of malice on the attempted murder charge for shooting at the victim based on the injury resulting from a different crime, the pistol-whipping. Based on the defendant’s use of a weapon and the related circumstances, the court was unpersuaded that the jury would have reached a different result without the instruction.
(5) Finally, the court rejected the defendant’s argument that the trial court erred by failing to give a self-defense instruction despite the defendant’s request for instructions on both perfect and imperfect self-defense. The defendant’s testimony that he did not recall shooting the first victim and his expert’s testimony that he acted involuntarily defeated his self-defense argument.

60 Things to Double-Check Before Launching a Website
Admit it: Launching a new website is stressful — even for the most seasoned digital marketers. Websites are complex. There are so many things that are easily overlooked, like a broken link or a misspelled word.  And of course, a handful of things could go very, very wrong. Like what if you forget to test an important data capture form and then lose out on generating a bunch of new leads? Or worse, what if you forget to properly set up site redirects, and those valuable search engine visitors get a page not found message? Instead of worrying about the what ifs, wouldn’t it be much easier to have a comprehensive website checklist to run down before every site launch? One that you could use for enterprise websites, microsites, landing pages, and everything in between?
Well, you’re in luck because I’ve put together the following list of 60 things to check before launching a website. It’s the same list that our team uses at our digital agency, and it’s a list you can copy, edit, and make your own based on the software you’re using to launch and host your website. We’ve grouped items into seven categories related to page content, design, functionality, SEO, branding, analytics, security, and compliance. Keep on reading to make sure you don’t forget a thing before your next launch. Don’t have time to check all 60? Here’s a list of the most important highlights from each section:
Website Launch Checklist
Web copywriting has been proofread. Spelling and grammar are correct. Company contact details are accurate throughout the website. Rights to images, fonts, and other content have been properly licensed and/or cited. Website pages are compatible across browsers (IE 7 8, 9 and 10, Firefox, Chrome, Safari). Website pages are compatible across devices (Android, iPhone, tablets). Forms are submitting data properly. Internal links across web pages are working properly. Social media share icons are working properly. Company logo is linked to the homepage. Pages have unique page titles (fewer than 70 characters, includes keywords). Pages have unique meta descriptions (fewer than 156 characters, includes keywords). Google Webmaster and Google Analytics accounts have been properly synced. 24/7 monitoring scripts are installed. Ongoing copies of the website are being created and stored on a regular basis. Passwords and other website credentials are stored in a secure place.
Check for Consistent Page Content First, take some time to review all of the content on your website with a fine-tooth comb. Of course, that means page content, but don’t forget about your premium content too. From data-driven content and downloadable documents to rich media such as videos and images, you want to make sure everything is in place, working properly, and looking beautiful. So my suggestion is to check the following items once — and then check them again. You really don’t want to miss a single typo or grammatical error. Make sure text is accurate and error free. Web copywriting has been proofread. Spelling and grammar are correct. Copyright date (perhaps in the footer) includes the current year. Company contact details are accurate throughout the website. Generic content, such as lorem ipsum, has been properly removed and replaced. All premium content, such as case studies, ebooks, and whitepapers, have been proofread. Spelling and grammar are correct. Create clear content structure. Paragraphs, headers, lists, and other formatting are correct. Images are in the correct places, formatted and working on all devices. Videos are in the correct places, formatted and working on all devices. Audio files are in the correct places, formatted and working on all devices. All premium content, such as case studies, ebooks, and whitepapers, are stored in their proper libraries/databases and work properly. Rights to images, fonts, and other content have been properly licensed and/or cited. Test your website design and its functionality. Second, take the necessary steps to ensure that the site design is pixel perfect. If you have a responsive website (and you definitely should), you need to check the design across all devices. Your site should be looking good not just on an office desktop, but also on laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. Test the site for User Experience (UX). Website pages are compatible across browsers (IE 7 8, 9 and 10, Firefox, Chrome, Safari). Website pages are compatible across devices (Android, iPhone, tablets). CSS/HTML is properly validated. Insure your design is aesthetically pleasing. Scripts are optimized across web pages. Images are optimized across web pages. CSS is optimized across web pages. Favicon is in place and rendering properly. Paragraph styles are working properly (headers, lists, block quotes). Test your conversion path’s functionality. Third, take some time to test and validate all of the different features on your website. Lead generation forms, social sharing, CRM integration, and any other technology should work flawlessly across your website. Forms are submitting data properly. Thank-you message or page displays after form is submitted. Form data is being emailed to a recipient and/or stored in a company database. Auto-responders are working properly (if applicable). Internal links across web pages are working properly. External links across web pages are working properly, and open in a new tab. Social media share icons are working properly. Feeds are working properly (RSS, news, social media). Company logo is linked to the homepage. Load time for site pages is optimized. 404 Redirect pages are in place (page-not-found.aspx). Integrations with third-party tools, such as your CRM, e-commerce software, and/or marketing platform, are running smoothly. Optimize your site for search engines. Fourth, take some time to ensure that your website has been given a solid foundation for SEO success. From site architecture and content hierarchy to metadata and XML sitemaps, do not leave any stone unturned. Technical SEO Pages have unique page titles (fewer than 70 characters, includes keywords). Pages have unique meta descriptions (fewer than 156 characters, includes keywords). Pages have keywords (fewer than 10, all words appear in page copy). A dynamic XML sitemap has been created. The XML sitemap has been submitted to search engines. Page URLs consistently reflect site information architecture. 301 redirects are in place for all old URLs (redirecting old to new pages). rel=”nofollow” tags are in place on applicable links and pages. Optimize your metadata. Metadata is properly in place for any content in an RSS feed. Metadata is properly in place for any social media sharing content. Spelling and grammar are correct in all metadata. Alt tags have been added to every image. Keep your branding consistent. Once you’ve decided on a brand message and tone, stay consistent throughout all platforms. This will make you look more legitimate, credible, and memorable. Make sure your website’s color scheme is consistent with your previous branded content. Copy edit text for brand voice to ensure consistent brand voice and style. Make sure all company taglines and mission statements are up to date. Prepare to monitor analytics. Fifth, make sure your website is set up to capture web data and analytics. This valuable information will allow you to continually improve your website going forward, so you don’t want to forget this stuff. Your website analytics codes have been inserted on website. Relevant IP addresses have been excluded from analytics tracking. Funnels and goals have been properly created in your analytics software (if applicable). Google Webmaster and Google Analytics accounts have been properly synced. Google Ads accounts have been properly synced (if applicable). Make sure your site is secure and backed up. Sixth, you can prevent loss of data and protect against malware and other damages by properly setting up site security and regular backups. 24/7 monitoring scripts are installed. A copy of the final website has been made for backup purposes. Ongoing copies of the website are being created and stored on a regular basis. Passwords and other website credentials are stored in a secure database. Comply with all applicable laws. Finally, make sure your website complies with any applicable laws and regulations. Internet law can be sticky, and each industry has its own set of rules to follow. So it’s best to consult with your legal counsel to make sure you aren’t missing anything — this post is not legal guidance. Here are a few you might need to know about: Web pages offer accessibility for users with disabilities (WAI-ARIA). Web pages announce if the website uses cookies (required in some countries). Website is compliant with usage rights for purchased or borrowed code, images, and fonts. Terms and privacy policies are visible to website visitors. Website is PCI compliant (if you’re storing and processing credit cards). Resources for Launching Your First Website Launching a new website can be a tedious task, but you can alleviate some of the stress by using this comprehensive website launch checklist. If you’re just getting started on your first website and are looking for tools to help you streamline your process, start your 14-day free trial of our CMS. Technical SEO: Everything A Beginner Must Know To Quickly Soar Up The Rankings
Whenever the word “technical” is employed, people seem to fear challenging tasks and confusing details. However, technical SEO is as straightforward as content creation.
Technical SEO focuses on predicting the factors Google will consider to rank results and strategizing to tick the boxes required to climb to the first page. Fortunately, SEO is no longer a new form of tech art: it is now a seasoned practiced with proven theories. Therefore, it is now easier than ever to know what Google is looking for in a high-ranking site.
While you are certainly familiar with the creative content aspect of SEO, you may not know about all the technicalities that will also define your ranking.
go
This is where our guide comes in. We have selected our top technical SEO strategies for rapid ranking improvement and sprinkled them with our tips and tricks to maximize results. Simply keep reading to become an expert in technical SEO in 5 basic steps:
Having A Fast Site
It seems obvious: the slower a site loads, the less people will want to visit it. A long loading time is likely to lead to several SEO nightmares: a high bounce-rate, few backlinks, and poor industry networking. The slower your site loads, the more impatient visitors will grow while navigating through your content. This is likely to have a domino effect on your traffic. But most frightfully, slower sites now immediately lead to lowered rankings.
As of 2010, Google has announced that the TTFB (Time To First Byte) is now a ranking factor. The longer your site takes to load that first byte, the lower it will rank.
Furthermore, a study frequently used in SEO in Dubai has found that 40% of people systematically close sites that do not load within 3 seconds. Another similar study ascertained that 47% of web users expect a credible page to load within 2 seconds.
To put it plainly, a slow loading speed will hold your site back. Not only will Google rank it lower, but visitors will also assume it is a broken or malfunctioning link, or that it is untrustworthy.
So how do you go about making your site load faster?
First, you will need to assert your page’s speed by using a tool such as the Google PageSpeed Insights. With the guidance of an expert in SEO in The UAE, you can ascertain the issues leading to your poor TTFB rate.
Typically, you will find that a solution to the following problems will lead to a faster TTFB:
Lack of HTTP compression on content
Unoptimized (large) images
No use of sprites
Lack of caching information
If you use WordPress, an excessive plugin use likely is to blame for your slow loading time.
Mobile Display
If the display of your site is not mobile-friendly, you are probably losing out on a substantial amount of visits. Google has announced that with the rise of mobile-phone use, sites without mobile-friendly pages would be penalized in their ranking. This penalization will only be lifted once the site becomes mobile-friendly. For this reason, you will want to use Google's Mobile-Friendly Checker feature to assess your site's mobile accessibility.
An overwhelming amount of sites features pages which are not “mobile-friendly”. However, this oversight is often compensated by high digital marketing expenditure. If you are looking to cut the costs, you will want to invest in effective web-development to make your pages functional on every smartphone or tablet.
If you are looking to make your pages mobile-friendly quickly and with limited expense, you will need to opt for a responsive design. This type of design will adapt to the device of every visitor, which leaves you, the administrator, limited pre-adjustments to handle. Responsive site coding will use percentages as language as opposed to pixel size. If you’re unsure how to switch to a responsive display, make sure to check out the services of SEO companies in Dubai.
While there are other approaches to mobile-friendliness (mobile vs desktop URLs and device-based content), most are obsolete and may lead to a lower ranking. Creating separate URLs for mobile phone visits will penalize your backlinks while using the same URL with varying content based on the device employed will create visitor confusion. Either way, your brand and site consistency will be jeopardized by this "quick" fix. Therefore, we suggest you opt for the strategy mentioned above.
Create A Solid Site Architecture
Even Google may occasionally need assistance to navigate through new sites. The harder your site is to navigate by the "spider" codes used by Google to index your pages, the lower it will rank. This is because a disorganized site is perceived as a non-credible source. Therefore, you will need to create a site structured in a Google-friendly manner. Such sites usually bear the following markers:
Sitemaps
Sitemaps list URLs on your site with anchor text to define the content or each URL. Sites typically place their sitemaps at the very bottom of pages to ensure they do not distract visitors from the content they may have been directly seeking.
These sitemaps are either coded in HTML or XML. XML sitemaps aren’t visible to visitors. Instead, they are created for Google’s spiders to establish your featured pages. For additional accessibility, consider creating different sitemaps based on the type of content on your site. High-ranking websites usually create sitemaps catering to image, video, audio or text content specifically.
Categorization
Ever visited a site, clicked on a featured post and found a distinct categorization in the resulting URL? This technical SEO practice is called Silo content. It requires putting content in categories, which should be placed in the final URL as follows:
"www.(site name).com/(category name)/(post title)/"
This allows for Google to assess and index your content using its coding alone.
Creating Authoritative Re-directs
When a page of your site redirects to another page, it is usually because you have altered the original page and now wish to direct your visitor to more appropriate content. This is often a temporary move, leading to the creation of a 302 redirect.
Temporary re-directs usually feature basic pages with poor optimization and ambiguous content. Therefore, Google does not attribute the same authority to 302 redirect pages as it did the page the redirect has replaced. If you wish to transfer old page authority to a new page, you will need to create a 301 (permanent) redirect page.
You should note that Google will assess the similarities between the new page and the old one before transferring your "authority points", with a threshold spanning between 90 and 99%. Therefore, to avoid dropping in your rankings, you will need your redirected pages to provide content practically identical - but updated - to the past one.
Re-directs can often bug, leading to an unpleasant 404 error page. This may result in your visitors immediately clicking the “back” button, which will lower the page’s SEO ranking. It is therefore imperative to create a unique, engaging custom 404 page which will direct visitors back to functioning pages of your site. This tactic will lower the cases of broken link reporting and page-bouncing.
Avoiding Duplicate Content
Duplicate content is likely to occur as a result of your web development, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. This content is heavily penalized by Google, as it confuses its algorithm.
Duplicate content occurs when different URLs lead to the same page. This is usually the result of faulty URL parametering.
Duplicate content will drive your ranking down because the "higher authority" page is impossible for Google to distinguish. As a result, you will find that your closest ranking competitor may be bumped up while you will be bumped down because you have too much "thin" or "identical content".
Duplicate pages can occur for a variety of reasons, the most common being “read more” descriptions and awkward indexing. To decrease duplicate content, you may want to shrink the length of your posts to avoid the creation of the aforementioned link. However, you should note that lengthier content often earns more backlinking; for this reason, you may want to create canonical links instead.
Include a canonical link on each page you find to feature duplicate content. If you’re unsure how to establish the latter, you may want to use the Siteliner tool.
Your canonical link will tell Google’s spider codes that while duplicate content exists on your page, you are aware of it and are providing a preferred link for all visitors to avoid pointless clicks.
What You Should Remember
Technical SEO is more about avoiding common mistakes than it is about implementing complex strategies. For this reason, you need not be overwhelmed by the task at hand. Instead, pay attention to your site’s analytics and ensure you optimize the metrics you are struggling with. By following the 5 techniques listed above, you can ensure that even as a beginning SEO professional, you can significantly improve the ranking of the sites you apply your skill to. Attention to detail will fare as well for your site’s ranking as quality content. To facilitate your optimization process, consider contacting an SEO agency in Dubai.

The 6-Step Technical SEO Health Check
On-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO can be thought of as three pillars of organic search engine optimization. Out of the three, technical SEO can feel like the forgotten sibling, most likely because it’s the trickiest to master. However, with the competition in search results now, us marketers cannot afford to shy away from the challenges of technical SEO—having a site that is crawlable, fast, and secure has never been more essential to ensure your site performs well in search engines.
Our technical SEO health check is a little different.
Because technical SEO is such a vast topic (and growing), this piece won’t cover everything required for a full technical SEO audit. However, it will address six fundamental aspects of technical SEO that you should be looking at to improve your website’s performance and keep it effective and healthy. Once you’ve got these six bases covered, you can move on to more advanced technical SEO strategies.
1. Make sure your site is crawlable
There’s no use writing pages of great content if search engines cannot crawl and index these pages. Therefore, you should start by checking your robots.txt file. This file is the first point of call for any web-crawling software when it arrives at your site. Your robots.txt file outlines which parts of your website should and should not be crawled. It does this by “allowing” or “disallowing” the behaviour of certain user agents. The robots.txt file is publically available and can be found by adding /robots.txt to the end of any root domain. Here is an example for the Hallam site.
We can see that Hallam is requesting any URLs starting with /wp-admin (the backend of the website) not to be crawled. By indicating where not to allow these user agents, you save bandwidth, server resources, and your crawl budget. You also don’t want to have prevented any search engine bots from crawling important parts of your website by accidentally “disallowing” them. Because it is the first file a bot sees when crawling your site, it is also best practice to point to your sitemap.
You can edit and test your robots.txt file in the old Google Search Console.
Here, you can input any URL on the site to check if it is crawlable or if there are any errors or warnings in your robots.txt file.
While Google has done a relatively good job of transferring the most important aspects of the old tool into the new Google Search Console, for many digital marketers the new version still offers less functionality than the old one. This is particularly relevant when it comes to technical SEO. At the time of writing, the crawl stats area on the old search console is still viewable and is fundamental to understand how your site is being crawled.
This report shows three main graphs with data from the last 90 days. Pages crawled per day, kilobytes downloaded per day, and time spent downloading a page (in milliseconds) all summarise your website’s crawl rate and relationship with search engine bots. You want your website to almost always have a high crawl rate; this means that your website is visited regularly by search engine bots and indicates a fast and easy-to-crawl website. Consistency is the desired outcome from these graphs—any major fluctuations can point to broken HTML, stale content or your robots.txt file blocking too much on your website. If your time spent downloading a page contains very high numbers, it means Googlebot is spending too long on your website crawling and indexing it slower.
You can see crawl errors in the coverage report in the new search console.
Clicking through to these gives highlights specific pages with crawl issues. You’ll want to make sure these pages are not any important ones for your website and address the issue causing it as soon as possible.
If you find significant crawl errors or fluctuations in either the crawl stats or coverage reports, you can look into it further by carrying out a log file analysis. Accessing the raw data from your server logs can be a bit of a pain, and the analysis is very advanced, but it can help you understand exactly what pages can and cannot be crawled, which pages are prioritised, areas of crawl budget waste, and the server responses encountered by bots during their crawl of your website.
2. Check that your site is indexable
Now we’ve analysed whether Googlebot can actually crawl our website, we need to understand whether the pages on our site are being indexed. There are many ways to do this. Diving back into the Google Search Console coverage report, we can look at the status of every page of the website.
In this report we can see:
Errors: Redirect errors, 404s.
Valid with warnings: Pages that are indexed but with warnings attached to them
Valid: Pages that are successfully indexed.
Excluded: Pages that are excluded from being indexed and the reasons for this, such as pages with redirects or blocked by the robots.txt.
You can also analyse specific URLs using the URL inspection tool. Perhaps you want to check a new page you’ve added is indexed or troubleshoot a URL if there has been a drop in traffic to one of your main pages.
Another good way to check the indexability of your website is to run a crawl. One of the most powerful and versatile pieces of crawling software is Screaming Frog. Depending on the size of your website, you can use the free version which has a crawl limit of 500 URLs, and more limited capabilities; or the paid version which is £149 per year with no crawl limit, greater functionality and APIs available.
Once the crawl has run you can see two columns regarding indexing.
Indexability: This will indicate whether the URL is “Indexable” or “Non-Indexable.”
Indexability Status: This will show the reason why a URL is non-indexable. For example, if it’s canonicalised to another URL or has a no-index tag.
This tool is a great way of bulk auditing your site to understand which pages are being indexed and will therefore appear in the search results and which ones are non-indexable. Sort the columns and look for anomalies; using the Google Analytics API is a good way of identifying important pages of which you can check their indexability.
Finally, the easiest way of checking how many of your pages are indexed is using the site:domain Google Search parameter. In the search bar, input site:yourdomain and press enter. The search results results will show you every page on your website that has been indexed by Google. Here’s an example:
Here we see that boots.com has around 95,000 URLs indexed. Using this function can give you a good understanding of how many pages Google is currently storing. If you notice a large difference between the number of pages you think you have and the number of pages being indexed, then it is worth investigating further.
Is the HTTP version of your site still being indexed?
Do you have duplicate pages indexed that should be canonicalised?
Are large parts of your website not being indexed that should be?
Using these three techniques, you can build up a good picture of how your site is being indexed by Google and make changes accordingly.
3. Review your sitemap
The importance of a comprehensive and structured sitemap cannot be underestimated when it comes to SEO. Your XML sitemap is a map of your website to Google and other search engine crawlers. Essentially, it helps these crawlers find and rank your website pages.
There are some important elements to consider when it comes to an effective sitemap:
Your sitemap should be formatted properly in an XML document.
It should follow XML sitemap protocol.
Only include canonical versions of URLs.
Do not include “noindex” URLs.
Include all new pages when you update or create them.
If you use the Yoast SEO plugin, it can create an XML sitemap for you. If you’re using Screaming Frog, their sitemap analysis is very detailed. You can see the URLs in your sitemap, missing URLs and orphaned URLs.
Make sure your sitemap includes your most important pages, isn’t including pages you don’t want Google to index, and is structured correctly. Once you have done all this, you should resubmit your sitemap to your Google Search Console.
4. Ensure your website is mobile friendly
Last year Google announced the roll out of mobile-first indexing. This meant that instead of using the desktop versions of the page for ranking and indexing, they would be using the mobile version of your page. This is all part of keeping up with how users are engaging with content online. 52% of global internet traffic now comes from mobile devices so ensuring your website is mobile-friendly is more important than ever.
Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test is a free tool you can use to check if you page is mobile responsive and easy to use. Input your domain, and it will show you how the page is rendered for mobile and indicate whether it is mobile-friendly.
technical-seo-checklist-mobile-friendly
It’s important to manually check your website, too. Use your own phone and navigate across your site, spotting any errors along key conversion pathways of your site. Check all contact forms, phone numbers, and key service pages are functioning correctly. If you’re on desktop, right click and inspect the page. Here, you can see what the page looks on the most popular mobile and tablet devices.
technical-seo-checklist-mobile-friendly-check
If you haven’t built your website to be compatible on mobile, then you should address this immediately. Many of your competitors will have already considered this and the longer you leave it the further behind you’ll be. Don’t miss out on traffic and potential conversions by leaving it any longer.
Page speed is now a ranking factor. Having a site that is fast, responsive and user-friendly is the name of the game for Google in 2019.
You can assess your site’s speed with a whole variety of tools. I’ll cover some of the main ones here and include some recommendations.
Google PageSpeed Insights
Google PageSpeed Insights is another powerful and free Google tool. It gives you a score of “Fast,” “Average,” or “Slow” on both mobile and desktop, and it includes recommendations for improving your page speed.
Test your homepage and core pages to see where your website is coming up short and what you can do to improve your site speed.
It’s important to understand that when digital marketers talk about page speed, we aren’t just referring to how fast the page loads for a person but also how easy and fast it is for search engines to crawl. This is why it’s best practice to minify and bundle your CSS and Javascript files. Don’t rely on just checking how the page looks to the naked eye, use online tools to fully analyse how the page loads for humans and search engines.
Google has another free tool for site speed focusing on mobile in particular, reinforcing how important mobile site speed is for Google. Test My Site from Google provides you with in-depth analysis on how your website for mobile, including:
How fast your site is on a 3G and 4G connection
It will include your speed in seconds, rating, and whether it is slowing down or speeding up.
Custom fixes for individual pages
Ability to benchmark your site speed against up to 10 competitors
Most importantly, how your revenue is impacted by site speed
This is vital if you own an ecommerce site, because it demonstrates how much potential revenue you are losing from poor mobile site speed and the positive impact small improvements can make to your bottom line.
Conveniently, it can all be summarised in your free, easy to understand report.
Google Analytics
You can also use Google Analytics to see detailed diagnostics of how to improve your site speed. The site speed area in Analytics, found in Behaviour > Site Speed, is packed full of useful data including how specific pages perform in different browsers and countries. You can check this against your page views to make sure you are prioritising your most important pages.
Your page load speed depends on many different factors. But there are some common fixes that you can look at once you’ve done your research, including:
Optimising your images
Fix bloated javascript
Reducing server requests
Ensure effective caching
Look at your server, it needs to be quick
Consider using a Content Delivery Network (CDN)
Finally, it’s time to look at your website’s duplicate content. As most people in digital marketing know, duplicate content is a big no-no for SEO. While there is no Google penalty for duplicate content, Google doesn’t like multiple copies of the same information. They serve little purpose to the user and Google struggles to understand which page to rank in the SERPs—ultimately meaning it’s more likely to serve one of your competitor’s pages.
There is one quick check you can do using Google search parameters. Enter “info:www.your-domain-name.com”
Head to the last page of the search results, if you have duplicate content you may see the following message:
If you have duplicate content showing here, then it’s worth running a crawl using Screaming Frog. You can then sort by Page Title to see if there are any duplicate pages on your site.
These really are the basics of technical SEO, any digital marketer worth their salt will have these fundamentals working for any website they manage. What is really fascinating is how much deeper you can go into technical SEO: It may seem daunting but hopefully once you’ve done your first audit, you’ll be keen to see what other improvements you can make to your website. These six steps are a great start for any digital marketer looking to make sure their website is working effectively for search engines. Most importantly, they are all free, so go get started!

Clever Tricks You Can Use To Boost SEO Right Now
Are you looking to boost SEO right now for your website?  Do you want to learn insider tricks and strategies that will help to get your website ranked higher? If you answered yes to either of those questions then this article is for you. Did you know that in 2017 Google accounted for over 85% of all global mobile search traffic followed by other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo, which were well below 5%? What this means is that when choosing SEO strategies for your website it is crucial to keep the Google search algorithm in mind. And although the search algorithm is subject to constant change, there are a few time-tested methods which have been successful at improving SEO for many years now. Below are 4 of those methods that will help you boost SEO right now. Upgrade Your Website With the continuous advancement in technology, many people are no longer working in a fixed location. In fact, during the course of a single day, they switch between multiple devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and even phone watches to access the internet. That leads to the question “Is your website technology friendly?” This is a pressing question since Google now uses mobile-optimized websites as a key factor for ranking websites. Apart from the need of being easily accessible with the latest gadgets, there are some basic features that your website needs to have: Site Speed Although the exact definition of “site speed” is not well defined, if your website takes any longer than 3 seconds to load, chances are that the search engine algorithm will punish your site. Avoid using flash and other large sized images on your website. An increase in site speed will result in higher Google rankings with an additional benefit of increased conversion as well. User-friendly A user-friendly website will aid in a memorable experience for the user on your website. It makes it easy for the user to re-find your website and eventually become a repeat customer. Repeat traffic will assist in a higher search engine ranking. Efficient and Effective Make your website easy to navigate so that a visitor is able to complete a task quickly. If a visitor cannot find what they are looking for, they will lose interest and navigate away. Short visitor timings on your website may adversely affect your ranking. Free of Errors Make sure to get rid of any errors such as a 404 Page Not Found Errors, a broken link or a link which is not coherent to the visitor's search. Having these errors on your page will result in penalties from the search engines. Create Quality Content
Tumblr media
Quality content is the meat of the website that every search engine is looking for. Focus on creating various pages with different keywords. If you have a small business website with many products, ensure that you create a page for each to target different keywords. Avoid squeezing many keywords onto a single page. Regular posts and blogging on topics related to your product will keep the website up to date. This is a key factor that search engine algorithms look for. With consistent postings, you can start to become an expert in your field, driving more traffic and thus higher search engine rankings. Some basic pointers during content creation that need to be kept in mind are: Headlines and Sub-Headers Visitors to your website will scan to look for the information they need quickly. Include relevant and catchy sub-topics to guide the reader through the page. Concise Paragraphs Create paragraphs that are 4-5 lines each and which speak specifically to the point that is being conveyed. Short Sentences or Bullet Points Avoid using long sentences. Use shorter sentences, or better still incorporate the use of bullet points to clarify the content. Generate Good Links Links to your site show that you are active in your niche and business space. Search engines absolutely love backlinks. It also shows that other websites want to connect with you for the information that you are sharing with the visitor. Link quality is higher if they come from authority websites. Getting these kinds of links might be difficult at first, but you can start with links from blog posts and other influencers in your business niche. Creating backlinks is vital to higher search engine rankings. Organic and quality inbound links to your site is a great plus. The relevance and reliability of your website are gauged by the number of times it has been recommended by third parties. At all cost, avoid low-quality links and link farms. Search engines don’t count on such links and they will do more harm than good for your website. Leverage Social Media This is one essential step that has to be done if you want to boost your SEO right now. Initially, this may take some time to get the ball rolling, but over time, it will pay huge dividends. Social media helps in getting targeted traffic to your website. Search engines take your website seriously when people talk about your product and service, give feedback on your product, and discuss on forums. Two tricks to get you started with social media are: Social Media Platforms Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are great social platforms to get the word out about your website and the product or service it offers. For starters, keep your audience informed by providing valuable content via Facebook posts and regular tweets. After getting a stronghold on these platforms, you could start your social media campaigns to drive more traffic to your website which in turn will increase search engine rankings for your website. Create YouTube Videos
Tumblr media
Videos keep your audience engaged and entertained while providing valuable information. Out of all the keyword searches on Google, 55% are returned with a video and 82% of those happen to be on YouTube. This statistic shows the importance people are giving to visual learning! Focusing on YouTube SEO will increase your website ranking on Google and also boost traffic to your website. Make sure you have a compelling video title, short descriptive sentences that explain what your video is about and a catchy thumbnail. Often creating a video could be as simple as converting the blog or webpage content into an audiovisual display.
