*The Best of the Bestest!: The Rap Pundit’s Picks For The Finest Rap Projects of 2022
*Just a list of MY favorite favorites from a year filled with a lot of damn good music.
Tumblr media
What else needs to be said at this point?  You have probably seen at least a dozen “Best of” lists by now, with many of the same albums cluttered near the top....but this is THE Rap Pundit’s list, so you know you’re bound to find more gems than chalk.
In a historically deep year for rap music (a topic worth profiling in the future), the headline story was probably the numerous side stories.  Be it the explosion of great music coming from areas that had a previously under-reported wealth of talent (especially Wisconsin and Florida), the underground scene getting more high profile exposure than it has in years (artists like billy woods, Fatboi Sharif and Lungs/Lonesword being shouted-out by numerous mainstream outlets!?), sample-driven drill officially becoming the preferred drill-flavor (at least on the east coast, shout-out Shawny Binladen, Four50, Big YaYa and the YTB), and of course the simply inescapable rise of club music’s influence on rap right now (Bandmanrill is clearly the master of this lane, but this style isn’t going away anytime soon)….if you couldn’t find something you loved in 2022, you might not actually like rap music.
But the proof is in the pudding, let’s get into it.  Here are my personal picks for the most impressive albums/mixtapes/EPs/projects/whatever of 2022…

12. Languish Arts and Woeful Studies by Ka
11. Spirit Roaming by AKAI SOLO
Aaaaaaaaand now, my top ten...
10.  I Told Bessie by ELUCID
[A well-oiled machine of an album, I Told Bessie lurches along from one ear-grabbing soundscape to another, each gifted contributor putting their stamp on some precious reflection from ELUCID (all producers were in top form here, but Child Actor, Messiah Musik and Sebb were especially potent).  As one half of Armand Hammer, ELUCID has no trouble being a tour guide through his own stroll down memory lane.  He is a superior narrator that knows his way around a vast array of different styles of instrumentals, which means that Bessie never gets too dark or too bright, adding easy replay value to even the heavier moments of the album.]
9. Component System with the Auto Reverse by Open Mike Eagle
[Open Mike Eagle has circled around the epicenter of the underground rap scene for some time now, always a worthy contributor, albeit not one to necessarily be recognized during award season. That should change with his latest effort, a brilliant piece of nostalgia, personal reflection, and an earnest love for hip-hop.  Also, great writing aside, the beats on here are simply phenomenal.]
8. SICK! by Earl Sweatshirt
[Forgot that this dropped in 2022?  The first AOTY contender to drop is all too often the album ending up with the short end of the stick come December, and that seems to be the case with SICK!.  Less sonically aggressive than much of his previous work, Earl still manages to cram so much thoughtful writing into quick, fun-size doses.  The most effective music isn’t always the music that begs for our attention, and this feels like an album where the listener is fortunate just to catch Earl’s thoughts before they float away, to make room for more poignant passing thoughts.  Perhaps Earl’s best gift as an artist is his ability to leave fans wanting more.]
7. Bokleen World by Mike Shabb
[By now the buzz is just starting to nip at Mike Shabb's heels. The Montreal MC/producer was not on my radar before this year, but hot damn has he made an impact in 2022.  If it wasn’t his TWO great solo albums that he dropped, it was the acclaim from tastemakers like Westside Gunn, who got his production skills the attention they deserve.  More importantly, Shabb is coming out of Montreal, Canada, making him a representative of a scene that is starting to make waves well outside of the Canadian border.  I loved his release from earlier this year, but for me it was Bokleen World that showcased all of the many dimensions of an exciting young artist.]
6.  MOOR CHORES by Lord Kayso
[Another artist that I was completely unfamiliar with at this time last year, Brooklyn’s Lord Kayso is closing out this year as one of my favorite artists.  There’s something about his delivery and the way that he colors in his world that feels simultaneously intimate but distant, much like how a young Nas was portrayed as a writer’s-writer, watching events in his community unfold from a project window.  Kayso reflects on his world with a casual delivery that doesn’t seem to be emotionally affected in the moment, but the fact that he’s sharing these personal stories at all confirms that he’s a man with a great deal on his mind.]
5. For All Debts Public and Private by Defcee & Boathouse
[Last year Defcee & Messiah Musik really surprised some folks (myself included) by dropping Trapdoor, one of the best albums of 2021, in December...so let that be a lesson to anyone that thinks they can finalize their annual Best Of lists by the time Thanksgiving wraps up.  That's a tough act to follow, but Defcee & Boathouse managed to strike in 2022 with another fantastic project in For All Debts Public and Private. An impressive list of some of the underground's finest join forces with Boathouses impactful backdrops and Defcee's revealing bars, all to create an album that is as thoughtful as it is prone to high levels of replay value.  When it comes to dissecting one's life and perspectives, I don't know if any MC's pen is touching Defcee at the moment.]
4. Deathfame by Quelle Chris
[Detroit's uber-talented virtuoso Quelle Chris has been accumulating one of the deepest catalogues in music for some time now, but Deathfame is truly one of his finest works top to bottom. An under-reported trend for Quelle is that he somehow finds a way to become more and more versatile as a producer with every album.  Never allowing his sense of humor to drown out his messages, and never being so devoid of humor that his messages come off as bitter, a great Quelle Chris album has become a most welcome tradition over these past few years....and I hope it continues!]
3.  Aethiopes by billy woods & Preservation
[Gonna keep it moving here…billy woods is just flat out the most prolific writer in rap music right now, Preservation is a genius and their chemistry is off the charts.  Add a handful of standout guest verses - EL-P, Boldy, Breeze and hot damn, Despot!? - and you have an AOTY worthy album.  Too many memorable quotes and verse of the year contenders to list, but for some reason there’s a special place in my heart for “trying to pay rent - but that’s not black empowerment, that’s you trying to pay rent”.]
2. 10 (a.k.a. HWH10) by Westside Gunn
[Maybe my favorite Westside Gunn project since FLYGOD, which for me (as a bit of a Griselda stan since 2015), is saying a lot.  Reminiscent of Kanye’s “anyone around, come to the studio right now!” energy during better times - his MBDTF G.O.O.D. Friday roll out - for the latest (last??) installment of his controversially titled music series, Gunn managed to pull together a somewhat surprising list of features for a mixtape of loose and FUN bar-fests over the most varied, ear-grabbing production that we have heard from the Griselda collective in a minute.  I’m not actually sure who was in the studio and who wasn’t, but when the outcome puts Run The Jewels, A$AP Rocky, Doe Boy, Black Star, Busta and Rae & Ghost together on the same project, you get a straight-up dope tape that reminds me of why I fell in love with underground rap music in the first place.  Classic Soundbombing vibes, for me.]
1.  Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar
[When it comes down to releasing new albums, no other rap artist needs to check as many boxes as Kendrick Lamar.  JAY-Z, J.Coke, Drake, you name it - none of them have to incorporate mainstream bangers, nuanced “conscious rap”, alternative choices, catchy lyrics, superior production, clear expression of ideas, and manage to touch the bar set by fans with incredibly high expectations for an artist that doesn’t release new music as often as his peers…but such is the life of anyone who is considered to have the highest ceiling in their field.  Yet with Mr. Morale, Kendrick unleashed the album that *he* wanted to release: a sprawling conversation piece that stumbles through dozens of sticky topics without digging his heels into any one stance for too long.
It’s the perfect expression of ideas from anyone that came out of the last few years of isolation with a creeping sense of doubt, mistrust for the information circling around him, and a general awkwardness for how to interact with the world once again.  I’m not sorry that many of the thoughts he shared on this album weren’t met as “correct” based on our expectations of what many of us want him to represent, but more importantly, Kendrick shouldn’t be sorry either.  Much like other prominent people of influence in the world today, we should be discussing the nuance of everything we’re told, and the great points often come from those exchanges - way moreso than the regurgitation of curated policy that is deemed acceptable by the loudest of audiences.  So yes, I believe Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers to be hands-down the best rap album of 2022.  All messages aside, how anyone could miss the well-crafted delivery and high quality production that is easily the most engaging of any mainstream rap album in 2022, is still pretty surprising to me….but I suppose conflicted opinions are exactly what should come from a talented artist stewing in his own conflicted opinions in recent years.   Oh well, I guess even the best in their field can’t please everybody.]
Next stop....best songs. 👀

Nick looked at Eric—Malice—with tears in her eyes. His black ones met her gaze and a villainous smirk made its way to his lips. The black blood that pooled in his mouth dripped onto his chin as he licked his bottom lip tauntingly.
“Eric,” her words falling on deaf ears, “I’m sorry.” Her foot that pressed against his chest was shifted to the left slightly before she shoved her sword into his chest. She was praying to Jahar that it pierced the heart.
Black blood began to pool, surrounding the wound and soaking the gray shirt. Malice grunted for a moment, eyes flickering back to their normal lavender before becoming solid black once more. The dark smile widened; a deep, heavy laugh echoed throughout the halls. He smiled at Nick venomously, teeth stained with black blood. He grabbed the sword by the blade with his hands, cutting into his palms and further coating the silver blade with blood. With a grunt he pulled the sword from his chest despite Nick’s still firm grip on the handle.
“I don’t remember giving you permission to stab me.” Malice hissed.
Nick felt a chill run up her back, and fear took over her mind. Stomach sinking, she let go of Silencer and stepped back.
Another dark laugh erupted from Malice. “It’s a good thing I don’t need him alive to inhabit his pathetic vessel.”
“I don’t remember giving you permission to stab me.”

SIREN Trailer Promises Mermaid Mayhem in New Trailer
Upcoming series Siren shows us that mermaids are more dangerous than Disney would have you expect. Just recently, Freeform dropped a new clip titled “She’s All You Can Think About” that assuages any fear you had about this series leaving the gore at the door. In this newest clip viewers are promised a brutal, violent creature defending herself through a dangerous new environment.
Freeform announced last October at the New York Comic Con that Siren would debut March 29th, 2018 with a 2-hour premiere.  Siren stars Alex Roe, Eline Powel, Fol Evans-Akingbola, Ian Verdun and Rena Owen with Aylya Marzoff, Sedale Threatt, Jr., and Andrew Jenkins and rounding out the cast. Siren is based on a story from executive produces Eric Wald and Dean White alongside showrunner Emily Whitesell. Aldo holding executive producing credits for the series are Brad Luff, Nate Hopper and RD Robb.
Official Synopsis:
In Siren, the coastal town of Bristol Cove, known for its legend of once being home to mermaids, is turned upside down when a mysterious girl (Eline Powell) appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the quaint village. Using their resources, marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) must work together to find out who and what turned this beloved mythical creature into an primal hunter, and are there more like her out there?
The series stars Eline Powell (Game of Thrones) as Ryn, the otherworldly girl who draws Ben (Alex Roe), a Marine Biologist, into her mystery. Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola), Ben’s fellow scientist, is wary of Ryn. Meanwhile, a deep sea fisherman (Ian Verdun) delves into a quest for the truth, and Helen (Rena Owen) seems to understand more about mermaids than the average towns person.
Siren premieres March 29th, 2018 on Freeform. Are you excited to have a little more mermaid in your horror diet? Let us know in the comments below and in the Horror Fiends of Nightmare on Film Street Facebook group.

Filming in Vancouver: That’s a wrap for Sirens, The Crossing, Six—as Riverdale goes on hold
Olivia Munn, who previously shot The Predator in Vancouver, stars in the military drama TV series Six.
This week a number of TV series wrap up in Vancouver, and a dark teen drama has gone on hiatus.
All good things come to an end but in the case of what’s filming in Vancouver, that means that the shows are gearing up to hit a screen near year. Which is good news.
Eline Powell stars in Sirens
The first home screen production to call it a wrap on production this week is Siren.
The series started shooting the 10 episodes of its first season back on August 2 and finishes on Wednesday (November 22).
The series shot its TV pilot, originally called The Deep, in town back in September and October 2016.
Aylya Marzoff
The series takes the myth of mermaids back to their dark and dangerous roots in folklore.
In the coastal village of Bristol Cove, legend has it that mermaids once made their homes there. When a mysterious girl with dark secrets named Ryn (Eline Powell) shows up in town, a battle breaks out between humans and mermaids over the right to the ocean.
Marine biologist Ben, played by Alex Roe (The 5th Wave), and Maddie, played by Fola Evans-Akingbola (Death in Paradise), work together to understand why the mermaids have turned into predators.
The also cast includes Ian Verdun (Life’s a Drag) as a deep-sea fisherman, Sibongile “Sibo” Mlambo (Lost in Space) as a powerful mermaid, Sedale Threatt, Jr. (Hap and Leonard) as a warrior merman, Aylya Marzoff (Grandfathered) as the leader of the mermaid colony, and Rena Owen (Star Wars Episodes II and III) as the town eccentric who knows more about the mermaids than anyone is aware of.
The fantasy-thriller drama will premiere on March 29 on Freeform.
Sandrine Holt
Another TV series completing its debut season is The Crossing, which wraps up on Friday (November 24).
The sci-fi series, which started filming on July 25, also takes place in a small U.S. fishing town that changes after the arrival of others. But in this case, the 500 people washing up on shore are refugees—and only 47 survive.
But there’s a twist: they aren’t from another country but from a war-ravaged America from 250 years in the future.
As the townspeople try to figure out what to do, there’s a conspiracy at the heart of the mystery.
Steve Zahn
Steve Zahn plays the local sheriff, Sandrine Holt portrays a federal agent and mother searching for her missing daughter, and Rob Campbell is cast as a cerebral member of the surviving refugees.
The cast also includes Natalie Martinez, Rick Gomez, Jay Karnes, Marcuis Harris, Simone Kessel, Kelly Missal, and more.
In Canada, the series will be broadcast on CTV in Canada and ABC in the U.S. A premiere date hasn’t been announced yet so stay tuned.
Six
Also on Friday, the military drama Six finishes shooting 10 episodes for its second season, which relocated from North Carolina and started filming on July 17.
The series follows Navy SEAL Team Six who were on a mission to hunt down a Taliban leader in Afghanistan. Things went awry when they discovered a U.S. citizen working with the terrorists. When their troop leader (Walter Goggins) was captured by the militant organization Boko Haram, the team had to put aside their differences to locate and rescue him.
Six
In Season 2, the cast expanded to include Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) as a CIA operative, Eric Ladin (Mad Men) as an experienced but disruptive SEAL from another team, Jaylen Moore (The Night Shift) as an Afghan American sniper (a recurring character in Season 1), and Nikolai Nikolaeff (Fargo) as a Chechen/Jihadi mastermind.
Recurring characters will be played by Erik Palladino (Suits), as the commander of SEAL Team Six, and Katherine Evans (The Killing), as a young woman at odds with the team
The cast also includes Kyle Schmid, Barry Sloane, Juan Pablo Raba, Edwin Hodge, Dominic Adams, Brianne Davis, Nadine Velazquez, Donny Boaz, and Nondumiso Tembe.
A premiere date for Season 2 hasn’t been announced yet.
Camila Mendes plays Veronica on Riverdale
Meanwhile, Riverdale audiences will be interested to know that Season 2 is currently on hiatus for a temporary break that started on November 18 and will continue until Sunday (November 26). So that should give the show’s stalkers—oops, fans—a chance to take a break from their Archie-hunting activities.
The TV teen drama series, based on Archie Comics, is slated to continue shooting until March 21.
And for the moment, that’s all the news we have for what’s going on in Vancouver’s screen scene. But check back in with us in the near future for more of the latest developments in Hollywood North.

“Let me guess—” Amy began as she held out her hand and felt the cold specks of snow fall onto her palm, “—rogue Cryomancer?”
Eric nodded. “Not quite a Dark One yet, but she’s getting there.”
Amy pinched the bridge of her nose. “It gets hard to hide our world when Dark Ones keep threatening the mortals’ world.” Eric shrugged in reply. “Should we call the council?”
“Nah,” Nick replied, walking up to the pair. She held a cherry slushy in one hand and her wand in the other. “It’s just a rogue. Not really much of a threat.” Not even second after she said it, Nick flew across the street and crashed into the Starbuck’s window. Ice marked the back of her t-shirt, tearing the fabric.
“Not a threat, huh?” Eric smirked at his cousin. Nick sat up and gave him the finger before standing and surveying the damage.
“My slushy!” She shouted. Her eyes glowed a bright purple. “Okay, that’s it! No one ruins my slushy and gets away with it!”
Nothing is quite as surreal as snow in the middle of July.

Hi Nic! For your book, for your main character(s), how do they handle big stressful situations? Are they ones to ask for help? Shut down? Avoid it all together? Do anything else if it means not tackling the stressor?
This is such a loaded question and I love loaded questions
It depends on the character and their age really. I have way too many so I’ll go with the main 4 from the first 3 books
In terms of Nick, my protagonist, when she’s younger she tends to bottle the stress more. It ends up manifesting in physical symptoms or emotional outbursts. It’s very obvious to those surrounding her that she’s stressed, even if she won’t admit it. As she gets older, into her late teens/early twenties, she gets better at verbalizing her stress and asking for support, but only from those she trusts or is closest to. This is about the time she starts to share the burden of protecting the realms with her friends which helps a lot. But by the end of the series when she’s nearly 30, she internalizes the stress again due to insecurities. She doesn’t want to be anymore of a burden than she already feels like she is.
Amy doesn’t cope well with stress at any age. She too bottles it up, and it manifests itself through sleepless nights and panic attacks and lashing out (mostly at bad guys). Her friends try to help her, but she develops a talent of hiding said stress from them to the point where only her eventual love interest is ever able to tell when she’s stressed. He’s the only one who’s usually able to help, mainly because he doesn’t let her say no to his help.
Eric’s stress also manifests as insomnia, but also a loss of appetite. He tends to overwork a lot which results in responsibilities piling up and causing him more stress. He struggles with asking for help, but eventually realizes it’s not a weakness. He develops a much better work/life balance as he gets older, but occasionally still brings the stress home with him during times of crisis.
Mitchell as a young man has a hard time asking for help. He feels ashamed of it, setting himself impossibly high expectations. No one else has those for him, just him. But his parents push him to tell them when he needs help and he eventually does. He becomes more comfortable with it as he grows, and especially as he surrounds himself with more friends to support him.

My OCs + can they be trusted with your drink at a party?
Nick Satel— 9/10
Her family has hosted a lot of parties and social events over the years so she knows the priority of protecting your drink. Will put a hand over the top and keep vigilant of anyone who might try to mess with your drink. Depending on how much is left in it she might even refill it for you.
Amy Morrison— 10/10
Her family has also had many parties so she also knows the importance of it. Glares at anyone who looks like they’re coming over to mess with your drink. Definitely will threaten them too.
Eric Sedal— 6/10
Agrees to protect your drink and does so for first 2 minutes until he gets distracted in a conversation. Forgets he’s supposed to be protecting your drink until he looks down and remembers the drink is in his hand. He’ll get you a new one just in case though.
Gemma Newwood— 10/10
Very attentive and covers it with a napkin before putting her hand over the napkin. Watches for you as well and waits for you. Offers to get you another if you don’t have much left.
Mitchell Dunhill— 3/10
Super nervous being given the responsibility of protecting your drink. Accidentally spills it while waiting for you and goes to get napkins to clean it up. He doesn’t even have time to get you a new one by the time you get back. He’s super sorry though.
Marina Fulgum— 6/10
Protects your drink until she remembers it’s a party and decides to take a sip from it. That sip ends with her drinking the whole thing and maybe even the refill she got you. Makes sure there’s something in the cup when you get back though.
Stella Takashi— 5/10
Also takes it very seriously. A little too seriously. Attempts to enchant the cup so only you can add to it but messes up and now it’s cursed and the drink tries to attack you if you drink from it. They’re very sorry
Sucre Fairnight— 7/10
He does such a good job at protecting your drink. But they might sip from it to see what you’re drinking. Only a few sips though. He prefers to steal from Synphal’s drink. Hands it back to you a little less full but it’s protected!
Synphal Michaud— 5/10
Focuses on protecting your drink and hisses at people who might put something in it. The guarding goes well until she sees Sucre doing something stupid. Then she sets it down and runs off to stop him.
Nathan O’Mahony— 1/10
Drinks your cup as soon as they get bored of waiting for you. Absolutely judges you for your drink of choice but goes and gets more of it to drink. Good luck finding him because you can’t. Guess you need to get a drink.
Yvonne Satel— 0/10
Can and will poison it because she likes to cause problems on purpose. Do not trust her.
Steven Satel— 0/10
Will also poison your drink. But with a toxin that will immobilize you and let him strike when you’re alone and vulnerable. Also don’t trust him.
Etho Sarlee— 9/10
Protects it with his life but is also terrified to move from his spot. Stays in place frozen as a stone. You find him clutching the cup but he assures you no one was able to mess with it.
Archie Azure— 10/10
Has a literal short sword to threaten people with if they try to mess with your drink. Can definitely identify the drink by the smell. When you come back he’ll hand it to you and give you suggestions of other drinks you might like based on that one preference.
