Wanna see something sexy?
Tumblr media
There is nothing that makes me happier than a well-designed series of covers. LOOK AT THEM. Gorgeous.*
*fun fact - when AGAINST ALL GODS came out, there was a review left on a website complaining it wasn't historically accurate because there were giant bugs. Apparently the first fews chapters of gods squabbling, possessing corpses and generally committing atrocities struck them as A Okay.

Caves of Glass by C A Gray
From C.A. Gray – A Few Author Questions What genre are your books, and what made you write in that genre? YA Fantasy/Sci-fi. I write YA because I still think of myself as just out of college… and also because I don’t like to write a lot of gratuitous sex, language, etc which is considered typical of older adult fiction these days. Do you see writing as a career? It’s a side gig at the moment,…

unpopular opinion but with the new tide of Greek mythology stories and retellings, Greek Cultural Sensitivity Readings are absolutely necessary. We are in 2024, with thousands of fics and retellings out there!! How is this not a thing yet?? There's vast improvement one can achieve by working professionally on their text with a Greek. I've seen it so many times!!
Also, duh, I'm offering the service BUT I want you to know that the situation with the inaccuracies of SERIOUS works is so dire that initially I didn't even do it for money. As a writer I just wanted to... fix things, to set a new standard for writers and the industry that sells us the most heavily Americanized pop-culture material and passes it as "authentic vibes of Greek mythology". (And of course there were writers who wanted to do right by their story and they had reached out to me. So kudos to them as well!)
Okay, but why does Cultural Sensitivity Reading make a vast difference and it's not just smoke and mirrors?
As a Greek, I am tired of well-meaning writers and authors butchering very basic elements of my culture. It's not their fault exactly, since they were raised in another culture with a different perspective. And nobody clued them in on how different Greek culture is from theirs, so writers sometimes assume that their culture is the default and they project that into ancient Greece. (Even published professionals like Madeline Miller have written "UK or US in antiquity" (with a very colonialist flavor) instead of writing "Ancient Greece". (Looking at you, Circe!)
Even writers who researched a lot before coming to me still had a lot of misinformation or wrong information in their text, easily verifiable by the average Greek. Again, not their fault. They can only access certain information, which does not include Greek scholarly work and scientific articles that DO offer valuable context.
Translation, accuracy, and meaning: If you ever wondered what a word means or how to pronounce it, here's your chance! There are Greeks like me who are knowledgeable and have a keen interest in antiquity and they will be able to read and compare ancient texts, and dive deeper into the work of Greek scholars regarding those texts.
If you want to create new words, you can do that as well! (It doesn't always work, but we can try. Greek is a really rich language and has a word about everything) If you use existing words, I can help you separate reality from fantasy in the context of your story.
(Do not assume we Greeks are ignorant of our heritage, or that we don't know how to research! Our archaeology sector is huge and archaeological museums are closer to most of us than your local Target is to you)
I guarantee there are things you never thought about Greece and the Mediterranean - from the ancient to the modern era. Sprinkling elements like phrases, types of interactions, customs, songs, instruments, dances, etc , into your text will make your text absolutely rich in culture.
Names matter!!! The genders of the names matter, diminutives matter (If I see one more "Perse" for Persephone I will claw my eyes out along with a few thousand Greeks), naming traditions matter!!! In many cases you should not even use a diminutive!!
You will be able to write about a foreign culture easily! Because of the continuity of Greek culture, you can even write a few more recent Greek elements to fill in the gaps. I can make sure they are not mismatched, and they will complement your ancient setting. I have observed a few things I didn't know we had since antiquity, but they make sense because our land has certain characteristics.
Non-Greek writers often miss the whole context of Greek culture! Do you know how Greek respect towards deities and parents looks like? What tones we use when we talk to our elders? When to use honorific plural - if your setting is more modernized?
Oh, and please let's avoid caricatures when describing Greeks?? (even fantasy Greeks) There can be heavy exotisation and odd descriptions of Greeks, as if we are another species. Even in published works. For many western writers it's difficult to catch, unfortunately.
The whole process is actually way easier than you think. You send me a text, I make notes and then we have some discussion on your vision.
It's always okay to seek guidance from the locals! You are not "guilty" when you admit you don't know! How can you know if you don't ask?? You can't imagine what relief and "πάλι καλά!!!" I read/see from other Greeks when I tell them another foreigner is using me for cultural sensitivity? Greeks want you to seek help and will NOT shame you for it!
(On the contrary, you have no idea how many eye-rolls Greeks do when they see a blatantly wrong thing in a story... Which has happened pretty often for many years now. Can we do better as an industry?? Please???)
You can send me a personal message to share your story, or ask what this whole cultural sensitivity thing is all about, or ask about what I have done so far and how I can help. But for the love of all that's good, don't let your story be another "generic greek myth retelling"! And don't let others sell you their generic greek myth retellings!!

"What did it look like before you cleaned?" he asked.
Reed went to the windows. They were dusty and undisturbed.
"Well… His Highness's hairpin was on the floor. But that's it," Marigold said. She pulled her apron between her hands, starting to get nervous with Patrick and Reed’s serious tone.
"Hard to make a mess when he's the only thing in here," Patrick admitted as he turned slowly, looking around the room as well. “Has anyone else been to see him this morning?”
“No. Everyone’s busy getting ready for dinner tonight,” Marigold said.
“How long was he alone in here?” Patrick asked, pulling out a notebook to start writing her answers.
“Eh…” she shifted nervously. “We’ve left him alone before. Why is it suddenly a problem?”
Reed knelt to look at the floor. Patrick was a good investigator, but some things he just wasn’t going to think to look for. Although Reed wasn't sure what he was looking for either. Circles of salt? Candle wax? Mythiric was a world that had a rich history of magic and swords that could cut stone, but all that was in the past. They’d lost the knowledge about two thousand years prior when the first queen of Durshand had purged the corrupt priests of some demon religion. His history lessons had been over five years ago and his disappointment that he couldn’t sling fireballs or summon monsters as pets had caused him to lose interest.
“It’s not a problem,” Patrick assured. “We’re just… looking into something.”
Marigold fidgeted. "Reed? What are you doing?"
"I'd say it was witchcraft, but y'all ain't got that here." He got up, dusting his hands and pants. Ten years he'd been in this world, and all that time he'd thought soullessness was just this low-technology world's way of describing birth defects. Boy, was I wrong… Apparently, inert lumps of flesh can spontaneously become complete assholes.
"What?"
"Never mind," Reed said in English, then waved it off. Correcting to Durrish, he asked, “Can you answer the question, Marigold?”

High fantasy fans, I need your eyeballs.
My standalone fantasy novel MAEJ is to be published in October by tRaum Books, and the publisher and I seek folks willing to read a free advance review copy and leave an honest rating/review.
You can request a free copy of the book here: MAEJ Advance Review Copy Sign-Up
MAEJ is a unique, complex high fantasy novel featuring:
☞ gryphons
☞ berserker rages
☞ fate-worship
☞ algorithmic magic spells
☞ secret agent anthropologists
☞ hallucinogenic flower wine
☞ poetry battles
☞ Da Vincian flying contraptions
☞ a matriarchal society colliding with a patriarchal one
☞ an underground city
☞ a gaolbreak
☞ an awful politician getting assassinated while using the toilet
With “an elaborate and surprising plot [...] filled with political intrigue, action, twists, tragedy, and even a touch of romance”, MAEJ is a novel “unapologetic in its intelligence and dedication to doing strange, creative things with language” even as it offers “meaty commentary on the social construction of sex, sexuality, and gender” (in the words of one early reviewer).
If you want an ARC, here is that link again: MAEJ Advance Review Copy Sign-Up
You need not be a professional reviewer or somehow associated with the publishing trade. We welcome anybody who would like to read and review the novel.
You also have the option of waiting until 21 October, when you will be able to pay money for a book you could have gotten for free.

Introducing three major protagonists of the upcoming LGBTQ+ epic science fantasy novel, The Protector and the Annihilation, as drawn by artist NyanyanDraws...!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IT'S TIME… Let me introduce you to three main characters of my upcoming adult epic science fantasy novel, The Protector and the Annihilation! These gorgeous artworks are by @nyanyandraws.
This epic science fantasy novel is part of the Blue Horizon series. The Protector and the Annihilation will be about three generations of alchemy-oriented mages upon a faraway planet obsessed with ancient Earth (our era), and their troubles across thousands of years.
A Kickstarter for it is in the works and will debut in the next months!
Without further ado, here are our three protagonists, with two lovers and one son, upon that faraway planet where we lay our scene...
RANVIR CHANDRANI: A young man who reaches for the stars. He comes off rather confident, and is reliable at creating a formidable atmosphere when at a friend’s side. He may or may not be attempting to befriend Armando. Wherever he goes, he faces what he needs without ever faltering. But…
(The first portrait. Alchemy: the monsoon—he can both summon and banish them. Right-handed. Formerly red-eyed.)
ARMANDO HERRERA-RIVERA: A young man who would protect those he loves to the utmost. The choices he's long made and desires to make begins to conflict with a certain someone else's.
(The second portrait. Alchemy: the darkness. Left-handed. Formerly red-eyed.)
ANTONIO CHANDRANI-RIVERA: Ranvir and Armando's son, as well as the true eldest of triplet brothers, Antonio has long been regarded as "infamous" by the world population. At 15 he joins the Protector's class alongside his twins with the goal of becoming the Protector of Worlds… They say he's secretly planning on bringing his old friend Alejandro Altaha down. How far will he go for the sake of his goals?
(The third portrait. Alchemy: the ocean and the dark. Left-handed. Red-eyed.)
Two fathers in love. A son who has lost his own adolescent love dreams of seeing him again. The Protector and the Annihilation — a cyclical story involving generational trauma.
100,000 years in the future, the Earth is such a dream.

Masterpost: The Tale of Fëor and Ërna
TToFaË is a free fantasy web novel written and illustrated by @feolnir. Here’s a summary:
Fëor wasn’t a fighter. He was an herb-loving homebody who enjoyed stories about questing but preferred a quaint life. He assumed that wouldn’t change—until a strange “spirit” came to his glade. Something about her seemed familiar, but she came from a world he feared. The realm of stories wasn’t supposed to be real, after all.
Ërna hated home. She couldn’t be herself there, so she went somewhere her family wouldn’t dare follow her. Free at last, she gathered herbs to study and make medicine with help from the land-spirits—except they seemed to avoid her. After finally finding someone to help her, she was soon reminded of a painful reality: she wasn’t welcome there.
Despite being born to a world bent on keeping them apart, something—or someone—brought them together. But the strangest part? It felt like a reunion. Regardless of the reason (if there even was a reason), Fëor and Ërna only wanted to help each other grow and be true to themselves; but with a war brewing around them, such a wish was hardly simple.
Table of Contents
As a rule, each post below is between 500 and 1500 words. This has been done to (hopefully) make the story easier to read. We’re all a bit short on time, after all. Treat them like snacks!

Resources
I have a website, which contains both this story and many additional goodies to help you read it. You don’t have to go there, but it may prove useful. Here’s a list of what you’ll find there:
Glossary
Maps
Characters
Herbs
Support
The web novel is free. All I ask for is your time, which is arguably more valuable. If you want to do more, though, I have a ko-fi page. But honestly, here’s the best thing you can do to help: spread the word. Tell your friends. Talk about it. Little stuff like that goes a long way! And I’ll be eternally grateful.
Many thanks for reading, friend!

My OCs in Lego form ✨ Arien left, Rian right
Excerpt from chapter 2:
"She's waiting for you," Vidar said as Arien approached the final door at the dead end of the hallway.
Vidar turned, summoning golden enner in the palm of his hand and connecting it to a spot on the door where a doorknob would typically be. Two clicks came from inside the door before it creaked open, revealing a room with curtains drawn and no lamps lit.
It took a moment for Arien's eyes to adjust as she stepped through the doorframe. When they did, she made out the hunched figure of the Peacekeeper, sitting on the floor against the stone wall. The Peacekeeper hadn't looked up when the door opened. Her chin-length hair hung limp in front of her downturned face, and her bandaged hands lay palm-up on top of her sprawled-out legs.
Vidar sent two swirling orbs of golden enner into the room. They bathed it in warm light that seemed reluctant to touch the slumped Peacekeeper, who hadn't moved to acknowledge her visitors. Despite the lack of decor, the room was as nice as any in Istmoril. There was a small but soft bed in the corner, covers unruffled, and a full dinner tray on a small desk. The only disturbed area was a stack of papers and several bottles of ink and pens scattered around the Peacekeeper. None of the papers Arien could see had anything legible written on them, but she was intrigued by a poor attempt at what looked like a highly complicated transport figure.
"Miss Rian Zedk," Vidar said, making Arien snap her eyes away from the papers, "Lady Arien is here to speak with you."
Rian slowly lifted her head, and Arien swallowed a noise in her throat as bloodshot eyes shone menacingly in the dark. She wasn't sure what attitude she'd expected from the Peacekeeper, but it wasn't malice. Just as she'd thought this, the expression vanished from Rian's eyes, leaving behind an emptiness.
