OH MY DEVIL THE SONG WAS NOT A ONE TIME THING
WHY STAR TREK,WHY?
So I just finished the first episode ST Enterprise and it was... interesting. I'm trying (and failing) not to be too harsh. So far the only likable character is T'Pol (and Porthos obviously). I'm hoping that will change. Also I don't understand the title song... just why? What were they thinking?(Hopping it's an one time thing)

Star Trek Enterprise episode where the ship has to investigate something happening on a planet that's basically just Earth in the early 1900's so Archer, Trip and Malcolm are the only ones to go down (T'Pol says all three of them shouldn't go down and they say 'where's your adventurer's spirit??' as per usual) but then we just spend the majority of the episode on the ship with Hoshi, Travis and T'Pol as they investigate an entirely separate matter and also talk/bond about feeling like they don't quite fit in with everyone else. They're trying to find the source of some sort of noise on board. Travis is talking about how this sort of noise is actually pretty common to hear on spacecrafts, his father told him a story about it when it scared him as a kid! T'Pol's like "That story is illogical." and reveals that the Vulcans know what that is - some sort of pest common aboard spacecrafts. She starts making plans to find and remove it (the process of finding it includes several hijinks) but Hoshi stops them at the last minute and is like WAIT I think it's trying to communicate with us! It's not an animal- or, if it IS an animal it's sentient enough to try to speak with us! And then they have to deal with it all from there. Anytime we have a check in with les garçons blancs it's through a phone call and they're in an increasingly ridiculous scenario which we only get a glimpse of before the communicators get cut off (the pest is chewing through the wires etc) so Hoshi's like "Do you think they'll be alright???" and Travis & T'Pol are like "Yeah, they'll be fine."
#star trek enterprise#fake star trek episodes my beloved#T'Pol#Hoshi Sato#Travis Mayweather#Me: -turns the volume down on Archer & Sons- v_v#Me: -turns the volume up on Travis Mayweather Hoshi Sato & T'Pol-#slooowly watching enterprise and I'm so sorry but Trip Archer & Malcolm are SO boring and annoying compared to Travis & Hoshi#will you guys stop YELLING and being MAD#Hoshi is responsible for translating alien languages and Travis has the MOST experience living in space and they get NOTHING#I'm that 'doooon't care. Dealer's choice!
Cute/funny - "Do you know that your eyes actually have three different colours?" "You're very close."
Sweet/romantic - because physical touch is the other's love language and they deserve all the love
Go as the muse moves you! 🥰
Since you answered my ask so swiftly, and I managed to get this one out in an hour - a possible record for me! - here goes!
Hoshi leaned back and avoided the foot that was heading for her face, missing it by millimetres. “Too slow,” she teased, whirling in a standing cartwheel to swing her own foot at Malcolm as they let the capoeira direct their limbs in a freestyle series of kicks and punches.
“I wouldn’t like to make contact with your face anyway,” was his rejoinder, “bare-foot or not. It’d hurt, and we don’t want that.”
“Yep, and smelly feet aren’t my thing,” she riposted, a sly smile on her face as she turned and jumped, kicking out from a standing position.
“Smelly feet?” Malcolm stopped for a moment, outraged - long enough for her to hook a foot around his ankle and pull, sending him tumbling to the mat.
Even as he went down, she was moving, pushing her shoulder against his leg, bringing it up while she threw her weight laterally across his torso and lifted, pinning his shoulders in a cradle move. Although he tried to kick out, she managed to hold him down for three seconds before releasing him, turning swiftly to lay her entire body the length of his and grab his wrists, pinning them beside his head.
“Got you down fair and square that time!” she panted, her grin of victory blazing bright.
Malcolm grinned back up at her. “Square, yes. Fair?” he winked, managing to raise a sceptical eyebrow at the same time.
“Hey, not my fault if you were distracted by me insulting your feet!”
He laughed. “I’m not sure another opponent would take you seriously if you said their feet smelled,” he teased, content to let her pin him for the moment.
Laughing in return, she lowered her head and bumped his nose with hers. “I’ll be sneakier against other opponents,” she chuckled. “Besides, I haven’t gone up against anyone else I want to get down to the mat and hold there.”
“Is that so, Ensign Sato?”
“It is indeed, Lieutenant Reed. And as I recall, you promised to let me kick your - ‘arse’, was it? - at least once a session. So I’m taking advantage of that.” Hoshi winked, satisfaction in her gaze.
He smiled and tugged gently at his wrists, with no real intention of getting free. It was fun when Hoshi insisted on pinning him so she could feel in control despite his superior strength. He’d never let anyone else use this hold on him.
Then she focused on his eyes, leaning over his and moving her legs to straddle him so she could get closer. “Did you know,” she said conversationally, staring at his irises from millimetres away, “that your eyes actually have three colours? A greenish-grey, some pale gold, and a little amber around the pupil. Oh, and a tiny speck of - hmm, maybe blue? - in your left eye.”
Malcolm chuckled. “I did know,” he told her. “But you have to be very close to see it. Otherwise they just look grey. Or sometimes green, depending on the light.”
“Well then,” she smirked, “It’ll be our little secret. Unless Phlox gets up close and personal with your eyes, I guess.” Her eyes twinkled at him, and suddenly he twisted his wrists out of her grasp, surged upward and rolled so she was the one pinned.
“Hmm, let’s see,” he murmured, straddling her and getting up close to her eyes in turn. “Shades of brown, ranging from dark chocolate to black coffee and a bit of amber. Nice.” He booped her nose gently with his own. “Also some shades of irritation, I see,” he teased. “Can’t help it if I want to be on top, Ensign. It’s a command imperative.”
“God, stop it, you’re so full of nonsense!” she exclaimed, trying to buck him off, but failing. Trying to look annoyed, she started giggling as he booped her nose again, then released her and rolled off, jumping to his feet and holding out a hand to help her up.
“Let’s take this nonsense back to my quarters, then, shall we? I think the time is ripe for some massages and extra cuddles, minx.”
Taking his hand, she jumped to her feet in turn, and bumped his hip with hers. “You’ve got it, hero. Let’s go.”

Enterprise (A prequel that looks FAR more advanced than its future)
[All images are owned by Paramount. Please don’t sue me]
With the release of First Contact, it was established that mankind would achieve faster than light travel in 2063, 67 years from when the film premiered (or 39 years from now. Come on Cochrane, get a move on!) However, it would be almost 90 years from then that Earth would truly begin exploring space.
youtube
(Thanks to Rui Cruz)
Enterprise (produced by Rick Berman and (sigh...) Brannon Braga) is the final Star Trek series until Paramount+ went online. It follows the early space exploration done by Earth ten years before the founding of the United Federation of Planets (so the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) is the first Federation starship to bear the name, while this Enterprise is an Earth vessel)
Speaking of…
Enterprise (NX-01) is the first Earth vessel capable of achieving Warp 5 (125 times the speed of light), and the first capable of deep space exploration (though it will take a few weeks between systems) Despite being about 100 years technologically inferior to the USS Enterprise, it looks much more advanced (great continuity there, Braga!), but surely the interior looks more clunky, right?
OK, it does look a lot more cramped, but still looks like it was designed later than the 1960s.
Now, onto the uniforms
(Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter)
The standard Starfleet (what NASA would become after the invention of the warp drive) uniform is much like that of NASA flight suits: a blue jumpsuit. However, the color coding is still there (and following the colors for TOS) on the shoulder pads.
You will no doubt notice the two non-humans among the main cast. I’ll get to those later. Now, onto the legendary crew of this historic vessel that would help usher in the formation of the United Federation of Planets…
The Commanding Officer is Captain Jonathan Archer (played by Scott Bakula, formerly the star of the original Quantum Leap) Archer pretty much has the weight of Earth on his shoulders, as the success or failure of humanity’s journey to the stars depends on him. Too bad he doesn’t trust any of Earth’s allies. He also brought his beagle (Porthos) along for the journey (hope he’s starship-broken)
Speaking of allies, his First Officer and Science Officer is Sub-Commander T’Pol of the Vulcan High Command (played by Jolene Blalock), who was assigned to Enterprise in exchange for the Vulcans’ star charts after Enterprise blundered into Klingon space.
The Vulcans felt humans were not ready for interstellar travel and held back technology until they felt Earth was ready for it. Many on Enterprise initially feel that T’Pol was sent to spy on them for the Vulcans. She eventually leaves the Vulcan High Command to become an official member of Enterprise’s crew.
The Chief Engineer is Commander Charles “Trip” Tucker (played by Connor Trinneer) and is an old friend of Archer’s. He is responsible for upgrading and debugging the new technology Enterprise has equipped. Later in the series, he has a relationship with T’Pol.
The Head of Security and Tactical/Armory Officer is Lt. Malcolm Reed (played by Dominic Keating) Reed’s family was all Royal Navy, but Malcolm is aquaphobic, so he joined Starfleet. As a member of a military family, he understands the need for discipline and attempts to instill it on Enterprise (with mixed results)
youtube
(Thanks to Sipping Kanar with Dukat)
The Communications Officer is Ensign Hoshi Sato (played by Linda Park), who is an expert linguist that learns languages quickly, which is important as the Universal Translator (the device that makes everyone speak perfect English) hasn’t been developed at the start of the series.
The Helmsman is Ensign Travis Mayweather (played by Anthony Montgomery), who was born in space and knows many of the races along Earth’s trade routes.
The ship’s doctor (not Chief Medical Officer as he’s not officially part of Starfleet, but is just along for the ride) is Dr. Phlox (a Denoubulan played by John Billingsly), an expert in xeno-medicine, able to treat the crew when they encounter something that Earth medicine hasn’t yet encountered.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Star Trek without other races to butt heads with.
It also wouldn’t be Star Trek if the Klingons weren’t somehow involved (yes, in this prequel the forehead ridges are around, then somehow disappear in tome for TOS, then reappear in time for The Motion Picture. Can someone explain this please?
youtube
(Thanks to Vladimir)
Thanks, Braga Worf!
Also, there should be Romulans.
Fortunately, someone informed Braga that no one knows what the Romulans look like until TOS.
We also see the first contact with the Andorians, who are more than a bit wary of Enterprise since they are allied with the Vulcans (who they are at war with)
We also see a brand new enemy starting in season 3: the Xindi (When I first heard the name advertised, I was hoping I heard the Kzinti, but no luck) The Xindi are an alliance of several species (primate, insectoid, reptilian, and amphibian)
However, Brannon Braga’s lackadaisical approach to continuity reared its head in two major continuity errors with two factions that should not have been seen for another 200 years or so:
The Ferengi
...and the Borg, both of which had (thankfully) only one appearance.
The series ran for four seasons before being cancelled due to low ratings (the first since TOS to end prematurely) However, they got a proper final sendoff…
youtube
(Thanks to April 5, 2063)
If you would like to watch the series, it’s available on Paramount+ or behind your favorite paywall. If there is an episode you would like me to review, please let me know!

Finch rambles: Star Wars/Star Trek
I was just thinking about Commander Jun Sato from Star Wars Rebels (CRIMINALLY underrated character), and I thought, "hey, he would be equally at home in the Star Trek universe."
So, without further ado, I present my headcanons (all set during the TNG/DS9 era):
In the Star Trek AU, his rank is Captain, since that's the highest rank for a starship. (The starship he commands is called the USS Liberator-- the same name as his blockade runner in Star Wars canon.)
Great (or great-great) grandson of Hoshi Sato (the linguist in Star Trek enterprise).
Says he doesn't like children. Is actually great with children.
Often goes on away missions with his crew.
Sato's nephew Mart Mattin joins the crew as an acting ensign after the events of "The Best of Both Worlds."
(Note: In this AU, Mart's parents were killed in the battle of Wolf 359. Having no other living relatives, Mart then went to live with his uncle Jun.)
Both uncle and nephew have a deep-seated hatred for the Borg.
More notes:
More action than talk. (His speeches are short and to the point.)
Doesn't get much sleep.
Tea-drinker (but not earl grey, since that's Picard's thing).
Seems like a stickler for rules, but he will not hesitate to break the Prime Directive in order to save lives.
During the events of Star Trek TNG, he's in his early 40s. He has never married or had kids. (He's aroace.)
Literature nerd.
Also likes ancient video games, such as "Pokemon" and "The Legend of Zelda." He and Mart got their hands on some old consoles and fixed them so they could play video games together.
Friends with Captain Sisko and the DS9 crew.
Several of the younger crew members have called Captain Sato "Dad." He doesn't mind, and in fact likes it. (And then calls Sisko, whose crewmates do the same thing to him.)

Isabel Guz! In the 22nd-And-A-Half Century!
Image ID: Digital drawing of a Eaurp Guz and Hoshi Sato in the NX-01 starship Enterprise mess hall. Guz is a green slimegirl, Hoshi Sato is a japanese human woman. They are both wearing navy-blue united earth starfleet jumpsuits. Hoshi's uniform has blue lining and Guz's uniform has red lining. They both have ensign's pips. Guz looks a little flustered and melty, while Hoshi just looks happy. Guz is eating soup. Hoshi has a sandwich and some beans. There is a purple and blue nebula visible out the window. End ID.
pre-ent-season-1 Introduction to Isabel Guz under the cut:
Ensign Guz was in the 602 club, enjoying a fruity beverage and talking to Ensign Reed about Titan V missiles. Guz was in uniform--her navy-blue jumpsuit with red stripes, but Reed was wearing a polo shirt and shorts. Reed spotted his crewmates from across the room and waived them over to the booth.
"Uh, Isabel, this is, ahem, Lieutenant Tucker and Commander Archer, from Project Enterprise."
"Please, call me Trip."
Guz's eyes went wide. "Wow! Howdy, I'm, uh, Ensign Isabel Guz, nice to meetchy'all."
Trip cocked his head to the side. "Ensign, where you from?"
"No clue sir, but I was raised in Greensboro."
"Ah, one of them reclaimation project towns?" Trip said.
Guz nodded. "There weren't much uh the city left after the 2nd civil war, but that meant it wasn't one of the targets during world war three."
Commander Archer chuckled to himself, then cleared his throat. "I think you and Trip have a lot in common. He was raised in Panama City."
"A real life Florida man...," Guz marvelled.
"In the flesh," Trip said.
"Have you ever made it out to Cape Canaveral? I know it's mostly a crater reclaimed by swamp at this point but I've heard the historical society opened the ruins of the VAB to visitors! I've always wanted to go, but I never found the time, and--"
"Calm down Ensign. I've done better than that. I've seen the preserved Saturn Five booster in Huntsville, Alabama."
"No... way..." Guz said.
"Forgive me for prying but, what's with the, uhh..." Archer said, gesturing vaguely at Guz's whole deal.
“The slime? The Vulcan scientists said I came to them as a cylinder of biomimetic compound salvaged from a Zaldan Empire ship. They didn't get any records, so I dunno what planet I'm from. Ain't like it matters; as far as I'm concerned, I'm from North Carolina."
"Zaldans?" Archer said
"They're at a similar level of development to Earth, but with much wider infrastructure. That's all the Vulcans told me about them.”
“So are you like, some kinda shapeshifter?” Trip said.
“If you want to learn all about me, feel free to read the Vulcan paper, Development and Maturation of a Biomimetic Mold Organism. If you can read Vulcan, that is. You’ll learn all about my shapeshifting abilities, or lackthereof; my fluidity, material structure, sentience profile… pain response.”
The table went silent. Guz looked down awkwardly, more upset that she’d made things awkward than about what the Vulcans did to her all those years ago.
“Hey, ma’am, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to--”
Guz feigned cheering up. “It’s ok. We all know how Vulcans can be!”
The waitress came up to the table. “The usuals, gentlemen?”
“Thanks, Ruby,” Archer said.
“How ‘bout Isabel?” Trip said.
“You’ve already guessed that one,” Ruby said.
“Damn,” Trip said, snapping his fingers.
“Wh-what was that about?” Guz said.
“Ruby said she’ll marry the first guy who guesses what she wants to name her kids.”
Guz muttered under her breath, “or maybe the first slimegirl…”
Archer furrowed his brow and pursed his lips, a little surprised.
Ruby came back with some drinks, and Archer continued in his small talk. “So, Ensign, where are you assigned?”
“I’m on Captain Jeffries’ engineering team.”
“Oh, damn, is he overworking you?” Trip said.
“I can handle the workload,” Guz said. “But I’m hoping to actually get… you know, out there some day. I’m hoping to get on one of those Freedoms, or maybe an Intrepid--”

For the character ask game: Hoshi Sato, Seven of Nine, and Wesley Crusher!
Hahaha thanks for being my no.1 enabler as usual and sending me such a great triple ask! Prepare for Essay <3
Hoshi
one aspect about them i love
Her whole multilingual thing and having to figure it all out without the Universal Translator was so, so cool to me. Honestly, when I think back to what worked from Enterprise's whole "early days" pitch, it's the first thing that comes to mind. And gosh her backstory with the isolation she felt as a gifted child who spent most of her time in classes... all those languages, and no one to speak to. Really makes her presence on Earth's first deep space mission Hit Different!
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
Well, that she's actually quite a three-dimensional character! Yes, they often didn't know what to do with her and her screentime got reduced later on, but she's more than just the "naive young ensign" archetype- in fact, one of my favourite things about her is how uniquely real she feels (that scene where she had to settle a dispute with some aliens they'd accidentally pissed off and she didn't even speak their language and was straight up on the verge of tears while talking to them, but then gradually gained confidence? That sort of stuff with her was so good!)
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
Personally I will never be over the fact that in like season FOUR or something they just randomly dropped that she was originally discharged from Starfleet (!!) for getting into a fight (!!!?) over an illegal poker game she was running (iirc??) and breaking her commanding officer's arm (??!?) because apparently she has a black belt in Aikido (!!??!) Good lord, how many other secret skills does she have then? She's literally a prodigy who grew up with no friends I bet there's dozens lmaooo I bet she can pick locks and yodel and swing from a trapeze
one character i love seeing them interact with
She and Phlox have a sweet dynamic- you get the sense that her curiosity and open-mindedness and friendliness really make him feel more at home, as one of the only aliens on the ship
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
T'Pol!! T'Pol, T'Pol- the show gave them little to no scenes together, but it really could've been something so interesting, especially in the context of cultural exchange and nonwestern frameworks. And yes, they make for a wonderful ship too- but judging by the state of our dms lately I certainly don't need to tell you that😂
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
She and Phlox have a whole mini zoo of secret and illegal pets.
Seven
one aspect about them i love
The entire premise of her character is fantastic imo, and Jeri Ryan is terrific in the role. Her quest to discover personhood as an adult while also reckoning with all the violence she inflicted on such a mass scale (which itself was a result of horrifying violations of her own body and mind that she can barely remember) while also trying to reconcile the grief of all those lost years... wow
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
... I mean, I wish the showrunners had understood that Seven works best as part of an ensemble, and "ensemble" means occasionally giving the others something to do?😂😂 And that the whole deal with her biosuit and conventionally feminine hotness just didn't match the character; she should've been allowed to look and act WAY more weird and off-putting I think
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
Ignoring ST: Picard canon (which I always do), I think after Voyager returns to the AQ, Seven would dig deeper into the concept and pursuit of "perfection"- the show painted it as a quasi-religious thing for her, and then never brought it up again! I think now, abruptly ripped from her home and family and confronted with a big scary quadrant to explore, she'd try on spirituality, at least for a little bit- try to reconcile it with her very scientific algorithms of thought, if only so for a brief while she can make the universe make sense
one character i love seeing them interact with
Many answers (Janeway, Tuvok, etc) but I'm going to highlight one I actually didn't notice much on first watch- she and Neelix have kind of an interesting dynamic! They have more scenes together than I remembered, and they give each other some really good advice
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
B'Elanna. Their supposed "rivalry" never really made sense to me lol, they could've come up with a legitimately interesting conflict between them, or just made them friends- as is, it just sort of comes off like they're fighting because... women be like that, I suppose? Lol, don't get me wrong- some of their scenes together are great ("We difficult patients need to stick together") but I wish we'd gotten more
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
She and Tuvok sometimes hang out in the mess hall at night, when the whole ship is dark, and quiet, and they can just stare at the stars, help alleviate each others' loneliness, while also giving each other a break from the exhausting ordeal of conventional socialising. Four hours in and not a single word spoken😌
Wesley
one aspect about them i love
Apart from being generally very sweet and helpful, Wes (and Alexander too) is what makes the crew feel like a family to me- like, this kid just has so many sets of parents! (Bev & Picard are his Parents parents, Data & Geordi are his work parents, Riker & Guinan are his weird parents, Deanna & Tasha are his fun parents, and Worf is... ok Worf can just be Worf lol the poor man has more than enough on his plate already)
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
That he's literally just a child, I suppose. Like- he's fourteen, of course he does and says stupid things on occasion! It generally doesn't bother me when people dislike characters I like but a lot of the Wesley hate I've seen across platforms feels distinctly anti-children in a weirdly malicious way
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
Starfleet Academy must've been a WILD transition for him, I mean sure it's a high-pressure environment and very competitive and everything- but he was on the literal bridge of the flagship of the Federation! All his bffs were highly intelligent and competent (sometimes superhumanly so) adults at the tops of their fields. How much experience does he even have socialising with kids his age? Does he ever feel like he just can't relate to any of them? Probably??
one character i love seeing them interact with
Ooh lots of answers here; I do think he brings out the best in Picard, and I love his dynamic with several others too- but I'm gonna go with Geordi. I know I called him one of Wesley's parents earlier but that was just a joke lol, truthfully Geordi has this extremely chill and almost like brotherly friendship with him, and he always respects Wesley's opinions and hears him out and never really condescends to him and I just think it's neat!
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
Lmao, Beverly. It's really weird how little the show seems to care about their relationship! I mean they obviously do have a positive one, and Bev is very loving and protective of him, but they don't actually share all that much screentime per se. So that means I have to headcanon slightly less positive things, like-
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
what if Beverly's absence during such a crucial year in his life (S2) sort of left a gap in their relationship they never quite managed to patch up? No resentment exactly, just... less connection than before. She's still very important to him of course, but not the first person he'd go to with good news. (I don't mean this in a negative way towards Beverly btw! I actually do like that the show wanted to give her more storylines beyond just being Wesley's Mum)
#whew that was a LOT hehe#but thanks for indulging my rambly inclinations!! not quite sure if I pulled you into T'P/oshi hell or you me but I'm glad we're here :)#also who knew that all my wesley headcanons were so depressing?? not me lmao#(also very much refrained from making a 'Worf is a bad dad' joke on purpose because I actually don't think he is on TNG)#ask game

The Time She Almost Didn't - 4
5 Times T'Pol Kept a Secret and 1 Time She Didn't
Sub-Commander T’Pol was sitting in the training room with Ensign Sato, stretching her arms. “You’re preoccupied,” she said as she watched her friend stare off into space. “That can lead to recklessness.”
Hoshi snapped out of her thoughts with a shake of her head. She tossed her hands into the air. “Oh, yeah,” she said. “Sorry.” She wiped the side of her face. “It’s just that Trip and Malcolm have been acting really odd lately. He won’t tell me what it is, but I think it’s got something to do with whatever project they’re working on. Trip’s avoiding me too.”
T’Pol, thoroughly exhausted by the human need for surprise, only sat closer to her friend. “Does this bring you concern?”
“No, not majorly.” She hugged herself. “It’s not the fact that they’re acting funny, it’s that I don’t want to get excited if it isn’t… if it isn’t a…”
“A proposition of marriage?”
She nodded hesitantly. “It’s silly. Isn’t it?”
T’Pol sat up. Human females tended to require more emotional navigation and care — she didn’t want to appear as a negligent companion to Hoshi. “No, it’s not silly,” she informed her. “You and Lieutenant Reed have known each other for many years — it’s perfectly reasonable to desire a closer relationship than what you currently have.”
“You think so?” she asked, knitting her brow. “Things usually aren’t so simple back on Earth. There’s all sorts of stuff you have to do and so many variables you don’t see. Last time I had a boyfriend, I didn’t even know if I wanted to go to prom with him, much less marry him.”
T’Pol relaxed ever so slightly, intrigued by the response. “If you want to marry the lieutenant, it would be in your best interest to tell him so.”
“We’ve talked about it, but… Don’t you think it would be rushed?”
“Not at all. I see no reason not to. The most healthy marriages are the honest ones.” T’Pol tilted her head. “When did you realize you wanted to take the lieutenant as your mate?”
Hoshi blushed. “You mean marriage? I guess I knew about three weeks ago for sure. Remember? With the leech?”
T’Pol stayed silent, but the answer was in the air.
Ensign Sato went on, visibly eased by the confirmation. “Well, anyway, he just reacted so quickly and stayed so calm during the whole thing. I guess I realized he was worried that I was hurt instead of worrying if he would lose a friend or not. And he’s never tried to push anything, either — everything between us has been so natural and casual. I think I noticed I wanted to marry him because I was never going to stop missing him if I ever lost him.”
“That is quite similar to the same conclusion I drew when I decided to propose to Commander Tucker.” She stood off the bench. Hoshi followed. “I have less… emotional reasoning, but this is a rare occasion where emotion and logic dictate the same thing.”
“You never did tell anyone why you wanted to marry him. You could have had a Vulcan man if you wanted. Why Trip?”
“I could.” T’Pol assumed the position. As did Hoshi. “Commander Tucker was the mate I desired. He makes the most logical sense.”
“As compared to a Vulcan?” she asked. She was clearly confused, and with good cause — it was unorthodox. T’Pol was seen as a superior being, even to humans she spent most of her time around. She raised her fists as T’Pol did.
“He will be able to fulfill all my needs throughout his lifespan. When I eventually outlive him, I can always take up another mate.” She began to tackle her as carefully as she could, putting pressure against her sparring partner. This wasn’t to develop T’Pol’s skills, after all.
Hoshi held her off for a second, puffing breath. “So he’s only a temporary mate?” she asked. The judgement in her voice was clear.
T’Pol flipped her onto her back, exercising caution as well as thoughtful execution. Her friend hissed lightly.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.” Just as she had calculated. Hoshi pushed herself off the ground. “But okay, I get it. You like Trip.”
“I have developed a strong attachment to him,” T’Pol countered. “He has an attachment to me as well. I did not want him to live his life without me.”
“So even though you’ll outlive him, you want to marry him because you love him,” she summarized. “Everyone knew he loved you, but we all thought…”
“You were incorrect.” T’Pol quirked her brow. “It is a common misconception. I thought perhaps he would ask me to enter a courtship with him, but he seemed… hesitant.”
“It’s because he thought you were kind of scary. Who could blame him? A hot, smart, strong woman who could break his heart at any given moment isn’t really someone you want to risk ruining a friendship with.” Hoshi laughed. She began to head over to the bench again, putting her uniform back on over her skivs. “He would always talk about you, even though you guys fought all the time.”
“He would?”
“Yeah, all the time. We wondered what kind of intellectual torture you’d put him under. At first, it was nothing but complaining and then it turned into something… I don’t know, weird. There wasn’t a day your name didn’t leave his lips. Malcolm and I finally put the pieces together after the whole Fraydik incident.”
“That was not long ago.”
“I know, right? How long did it take you to find out he’s in love with you?”
T’Pol changed into her own clothes, pulling her sleeves over her forearms. “I knew about sixteen months ago. He realized it himself at eleven.”
“And you didn’t confront him?” Hoshi’s eyes went wide. “When did you realize you wanted him, too, then?”
“A year ago. I had seriously debated reminding the commander his feelings would be inappropriate when I could not give him what he wanted.” She zipped up her jumpsuit, then carefully fluffed her hair back into place. “Upon deeper consideration, I realized I no longer wanted to withhold myself from him.”
“You take care of your appearance,” her companion pointed out. Hoshi Sato had always spent limited time with T’Pol. Usually, during sparring, they faced opposite ends of the room when they changed.
T’Pol, however, was delighted by this… as delighted as her repressed emotions would allow. “Vulcans appreciate beauty,” she said. She turned to Hoshi and let her shoulders down.
“I like it.” She smiled. “It’s nice to know more about Vulcan culture. I’m a little sad to know that you guys won’t be having a Vulcan wedding.”
“A Vulcan wedding would be held on the Vulcan homeworld. I would prefer to have more freedom with my ceremony; I would also like my mate to be accepted by my loved ones. Vulcans are nearly as prejudiced as humans toward those unlike us.”
“Really?” Her jaw dropped.
Humans were very expressive, T’Pol thought once again. It never ceased to amaze her just how little was required to awe them. Perhaps Vulcans were stubborn and hard to impress. Perhaps humans were still green to exploration. Whatever the reason, it never stopped a blush or a blink or a gasp from someone.
“Quite.” She paused, wetting her lips. She would need to hydrate soon. “Many would see my marriage as… inferior, as well as illogical.”
“I can understand why,” Sato replied. They both started walking out of the training room together. “Our instincts kind of control us. Why would a logical Vulcan want to marry an irrational human? But then again, your reasons have to be sound. It’s not like you to make a decision without weighing all the pros and cons.”
“Precisely. Others would fail to see that perspective and only focus on the first half of the argument. Some would say I have gone soft from spending too much time around humans.”
“That’s the logical thing to do — adapt where necessary.”
“While still maintaining your identity.”
“We seem to understand each other very well,” Hoshi said, holding back a laugh as she looked at T’Pol with pride.
“That we do, Ensign Sato,” she replied. She puffed her chest. “I must find Commander Tucker; I hope I won’t offend you by parting now.”
“Oh, go ahead! I have to find Malcolm anyway.”
And so, Sub-Commander T’Pol and Ensign Hoshi Sato bid each other farewell and left in their respective directions. When T’Pol eventually found Commander Tucker, he was tinkering on the floor of her quarters with a few pieces of metal. These days, he spent more time with her than in his own quarters; while nothing of any sexual nature happened most nights, he very much preferred to be in her arms while he slept. Neither of them could complain — it made things much more efficient. Her quarters were at the halfway point between the Bridge and Engineering. His warmth made the ship feel more like Vulcan. Not to mention they could easily spend more time together without having to arrange it beforehand.
“Oh, hey, honey,” he said, not looking up at her. “How was your evening with Hoshi?”
“It went as expected,” she said, sitting down beside him. “Are you not exhausted yet?”
“I was waitin’ for you,” he hummed, a small smile on his face. “I know you like to talk before bed.”
“You mustn’t deprive yourself of sleep just because I’m not home,” she said. There was a slight edge in her voice. Trip barked a teensy laugh.
“I’m not depriving myself of anything, missy,” he said, turning his head to give her a brief — yet sweet — kiss. “What’d she say today? Anything interesting?”
She briefly thought back to her fretful behavior over Reed’s proposal. “No.”
“Didya tell Archer about our wedding, yet?”
“It will happen soon,” she reassured. She tugged his shirt up. “You need rest, Trip.”
He raised his arms in the air, letting her pull it all the way off. “Then we’ll go to sleep. Don’t get your panties in a twist,” he chuckled. Trip stood and brought her over to their bed. As they climbed in, he snuggled into her side. The physical contact was sometimes overwhelming, but it wasn’t tonight. Tonight, she enjoyed it.
“Comfortable?” she asked when he finally stopped moving.
“Mhmm. Goodnight, darlin’.”
“You call me many names. Is there just one that you enjoy?”“Can’t decide. You’re too wonderful for just one,” he said, tucking his head on hers. “Now, sleep. You get real ornery when you don’t get enough rest.”
