NAME: Eurynomos (Pl: Eurynomoi)
RARITY: ★☆☆☆☆
THREAT LEVEL: ★★☆☆☆ | Will usually mind their own business, but their acidic spit is a real threat, and the undead will draw them in.
HABITAT: Can be found pretty much anywhere that a death occurs. They’re early colonizers and can become problematic to humans at homicide scenes. They’re also frequently seen in cemeteries and feeding grounds of other species.
DESCRIPTION: Resembling large flies with elongated bodies and human-like hands, eurynomoi are necrophagic creatures found primarily in places of rot and decay, but they’re also attracted to fecal matter. They consume all dead flesh of any kind. They won't hesitate to eat a rotting log, dead deer, human corpse, or sentient undead like zombies and vampires. Being almost entirely scent-driven, they don’t recognize the difference. They can vary in size, but most are about the size of a football, and many humans believe there’s nothing supernatural about them. One notable slayer, Alfred Abney, actually tamed a eurynomos and utilized it to locate the undead even from across town. The eurynomos eventually spat gastric acid on Abney, which ate through his skin and killed him. So maybe it wasn’t that tame. They are usually non-aggressive so long as they’re left alone. Though no one quite understands why, large swarms of eurynomoi are frequently sighted on and around the mineral abnormality, perhaps enjoying the smell.
ABILITIES: Being a supernatural giant fly, eurynomoi have incredibly strong acid that they spit up to help them dissolve their food. This acid is full of digestive enzymes and can chew through almost any material, natural or manmade. Interestingly, it also speeds up the rate of decomposition, making fresh remains seem (and taste) older and turning the undead into shambling skeletons until they’re able to heal. While eurynomoi typically use their spit on dead matter, they will occasionally use it in self-defense on the living, weaponizing it by shooting it at a distance. When it makes contact with someone, it will almost immediately chew through skin and bone, resulting in necrosis and even death. They can sense the presence of any death within about a 10 mile radius. Eurynomoi are efficient flyers and can travel and escape danger this way.
WEAKNESS: A giant swatter. Eurynomoi can be harmed by most normal means, and are soft-bodied. However, they’re pretty fast, and their acidic spit will cause major problems for anyone it lands on.
OTHER VARIANTS:
Maroborer: This beetle-like variant is smaller and more inconspicuous, about the size of a stag beetle, with raptorial forelegs and beak-like mouths. As they feed on flesh and bone, they burrow into it, even if the food source is alive. The acid they secrete doesn’t dissolve things, but rather it makes them brittle, whether object or person, allowing the maroborer to bore in using their beak. Eventually, after prolonged feeding, this causes their victim to crumble into nothingness. If someone is near a feeding maroborer, they risk exposure to their acidic fumes, which can make their emotions brittle, though what that means can differ from person to person. The hard shell of maroborers makes them challenging to squash, but extreme force, fire, or bug spray can kill them. They have a harder time breaking down the skin and bones of species with especially durable physiology, such as lamias and rangers.
