Masters Study of Movement and Position inspired by Camille Utterback’s Text Rain

I was really drawn in by the Text Rain as a work because it is relatively simple, but also a classic example of interactive technology. It’s beautiful how the letters interact with people - how the people light up once they realize that the letters of the poem are reacting to them like rain. There’s a certain creation of wonder in that, which I find delightful.

In working out the bodystorm of this we wanted to make sure we show that the letters either fall all the way to the ground, or stop and react to the person’s movements. We used letters taped to sticks that we puppeted according to Mona’s movements. It gave us a greater understanding of what goes into the project, and I know I still felt a bit of delight as I worked with the physical letters - echoing the actual installation.
