Hi! I’ve seen a lot of posts on tiktok recently about people being annoyed with other people’s grammar and shaming them for it, which I think is rude— even if the person is monolingual and their first language is English. Everyone struggles with different things, so here’s a compassionate and respectful guide to common grammar and word mistakes.
Let me know if you'd like me to explain any others!
Contains: YOUR/YOU'RE, ARE/OUR, THERE/THEIR/THEY'RE, THAN/THEN, TO/TOO/TWO, A/AN, BALL/BAWL, PHASE/FAZE, DEFINITELY/DEFIANTLY, SHOULD OF/SHOULD HAVE, WERE/WHERE, LOOSE/LOSE, ALLOWED/ALOUD, BARLEY/BARELY
YOUR vs. YOURE
Tip: The word ‘your’ shows belonging.
Example: Your mom went to the grocery store to get some grapes.
Tip: The word ‘you’re’ is a contraction, meaning it’s two words put together, and it means ‘you are.’ Only use ‘you’re’ if it would make sense to say ‘you are’ instead of ‘you’re’ in the sentence.
Example: You’re really nice!
ARE vs. OUR
Tip: ‘Are’ tells you what a noun is or what it’s like.
Example: This is my family! We are Puerto Rican.
Tip: ‘Our’ tells you about something that belongs to many people.
Example: In our home, we eat a lot of arroz con gandules.
THERE vs. THEIR vs. THEY’RE
Tip: 'There' tells you where something is located.
Example: The chip aisle is over there.
Tip: 'Their' tells you who something belongs to, and can be used to refer to something that belongs to a group of people or to one person who uses they/them pronouns.
Example: That is their house.
Tip: 'They're' is a contraction, meaning it's two words put together, and it means 'they are.' Only use ‘they're’ if it would make sense to say ‘they are’ instead of ‘they're’ in the sentence. Again, it can be used to refer to a group of people or to one person who uses they/them pronouns.
Example: They're not coming to the party today, something came up at work.
THAN vs. THEN
Tip: 'Than' is used to compare and contrast things.
Example: This pair of pants is more expensive than that one.
Tip: 'Then' is used to show time passing or to demonstrate a cause and effect.
Example: First I went to the store, and then I walked home with my groceries. OR If she does that again, then I'm not going to talk to her anymore.
TO vs. TOO vs. TWO
Tip: 'To' can be used in many ways, usually for the purpose of explaining where something or someone is going, but it can also be used with verbs like 'have' and 'want.'
Example: I am going to the store. OR I am giving a present to her for her birthday. OR I have to work today. OR I want to bake a cake.
Tip: 'Too' is used to mean 'also' or to express intensity.
Example: Alex: "I want a strawberry, please." Beth: "Me, too!" OR Small people matter, too. OR We wanted to go to the movies after school, but we were too hungry.
Tip: 'Two' is the second positive whole number.
Example: I have two cousins that are girls.
A vs. AN
Tip: The difference between these two depends on whether the word following it begins in a vowel-- A, E, I, O, or U. You say 'an' when the word DOES start in a vowel, and 'a' when it doesn't. Y doesn't fit in this one, because it doesn't sound right to, for example, say "I saw an yak yesterday."
Example: I saw a brown down chasing its tail the other day!
I picked an orange and an apple off of a tree while I was holding an ice cream hold and an umbrella! My hands were so full and I dropped it all when I saw an egret flying too close to me.
BALL vs. BAWL
Tip: 'Ball' is used to refer to things like basketballs, baseballs, and soccer balls.
Example: I kicked the ball across the field.
Tip: 'Bawl' means to cry very intensely.
Example: I bawled all day after finding out they discontinued my favorite taquitos. OR I'm bawling so hard because I'm so sad. OR I want to bawl. Today has been so hard.
PHASE vs. FAZE
Tip: 'Phase' refers to a step in a process where things change.
Example: I had a really big art phase in middle school, but I'm not as into it now.
Tip: 'Faze' means to bother.'
Example: He got in my face, but it didn't faze me. OR I remain totally unfazed by his antics.
DEFINITELY vs. DEFIANTLY
Tip: 'Definitely' refers to something that is certain.
Example: I am definitely not going to go to that restaurant again after I found a live bug in my pasta!
Tip: 'Defiantly' means to do something in a way that shows you are defiant or acting with defiance.
Example: Although my wife told our daughter not to do it, she smiled in our faces as she defiantly did exactly that!
SHOULD OF vs. SHOULD HAVE
Tip: 'Should of' is incorrect and should not be used. 'Should have' is correct. It can be shortened to the contraction 'should've.'
Example: I should have gone to the museum on Thursday, they were giving out free posters!
WERE vs. WHERE
Tip: 'Were' is used to describe how a noun (person, place, thing, or idea) was in the past.
Example: We wanted to go to the movies after school, but we were too hungry.
Tip: 'Where' is used to describe a noun's (person, place, thing, or idea) location.
Example: Alex: "Where is your backpack?" Beth: "I'm not sure where it is."
LOOSE vs. LOSE
Tip: 'Loose' is the opposite of tight.
Example: This shirt is too loose on me, it doesn't fit right. OR That screw is loose, you might want to tighten it.
Tip: 'Lose' is when you no longer have something you once were in possession of or when you do not win something.
Example: I don't want to lose my backpack again because they're very expensive. OR I always lose my soccer games.
ALLOWED vs. ALOUD
Tip: 'Allowed' is used to explain what someone is permitted to do.
Example: I'm no longer allowed to drive in the state of New York because I got a speeding ticket and never paid it.
Tip: 'Aloud' is used to describe sound that is hearable.
Example: He read aloud, "A told B and B told C, "I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree!"
BARLEY vs. BARELY
Tip: 'Barley' is an edible grass plant that is used for cereal grain.
Example: This cereal has wheat, barley, and corn in it.
Tip: 'Barely' is used to described to something that almost didn't do another whatever it was seeking to do.
Example: He passed his classes, but just barely.

i’m too tired to write the big grammar post so i will instead post a small
writing tip!!
if your sentence has more than 20 words or more than 3 commas, it’s time to consider splitting that sentence in half.
if your sentence has more than 20 words AND more than 3 commas, it’s time to read the sentence out loud and REALLY make sure it makes sense.
how many new ideas or actions are you introducing in that sentence? are the actions all performed by the same person in quick succession? if an action is performed by a new person, is it an immediate reaction to the first person?
it’s so cool and sexy to use short sentences. long sentences ≠ good sentences. in fact, a lot of the time long sentences = confusing sentences.
if you have to read a sentence you wrote out loud or read it more than once to follow what’s going on, you might consider rewording it. change commas for full stops if you need to, or make your sentences more active. (example: reword ‘bob glared at her, nicole’s face growing pale’ to ‘bob glared at nicole, whose face grew pale.’ now you’re telling us nicole’s expression Did Something)

can i have a native english speaker’s help real quick pleasee <3 reply, reblog or dm is fine! (i got a good reply but if anyone else wants to pitch in feel welcome!)
Who was the love of Michelangelo? - Depictions of queer reinterpretation in (a) graphic novel and art history
should i keep the “a” or not? the thesis is more about art history, it only includes the graphic novel bit bc it’s the art project part of my master’s and i have to include it in it, it is just one graphic novel that is the subject of part of the thesis so idk if it should be more as the medium of graphic novels or that one singular novel? how does it read?
(it’s in polish i just have to submit an english title and abstract too)

Hi! I’ll try to keep this simple and add a likely awful translation. I’m a native English speaker who wants to learn German. I speak some German partially, but I’m not as good as I would like to be. I have a very good grasp on English grammar and structure, and I love to teach. If there is a German person out there who wants to speak English, I would love to exchange help to each other!
—
Hallo!
Google Translate scheitert. Es tut mir so leid.)

does anyone have a good resource for checking if a quote is real?
I've been assigned a quote by Teddy Roosevelt for my English Comp course, but I can't find a good source for it. Like I can't find any way to find out when Roosevelt said it, or even if he actually said it.
The quote is, "If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn't sit for a month."
Any suggestions?

“Father?”
Obviously, the first time Odysseus heard his son say that in ICHBW, he thinks it’s the sweetest sound he’s heard yet in this world. He treasures being called father of Telemachus, and more so from his son’s own lips.
As he settles back into home, however, he slowly starts to mourn what his son calls him. Penelope tells him Telemachus used to call her mommy, then Mom. He still calls her Mom. And he’s Father.
He tries to scold himself, to be thankful that his son is comfortable with him; they’re growing closer, Odysseus is showing his son how to carve and talking about his many adventures in the 20 years away from home (the least traumatic ones, anyway), and Telemachus is talking to him about Ithaca and how training with Athena is going, etc etc., but he’s always Father.
and he mourns that he missed the younger years where he would have been called daddy and Dad. He wants to be a Dad, not a Father.
He’s minding his business around the castle, thinking about whether Athena would like a carved mask or patch for her scarred eye as a gift, when he hears his son’s now familiar, memorized voice call him.
“Hey, Dad!”
He turns his head to see Telemachus, smiling (albeit a bit nervously) and waving for him to come over, pointing out at a bright pair of birds that are building a nest together. (Penelope definitely didn’t tell him that she’d heard Odysseus making miniature puppy eyes every time he called her Mom and Odysseus Father. Of course not.)
Telemachus nearly panics when Odysseus starts crying, figuring that he had some sort of trauma connected to birds (let’s be honest, what doesn’t he have PTSD with), and Odysseus just gives him a big ol bear hug, sniffling and muttering that he loves him.
Telemachus never calls him Father again.

There’s a new drug in Gotham making the rounds, one synthesized by Two-Face’s people; if you take it you will have a 50/50 chance that you’ll experience the greatest high of your life or that you’ll die.
Batman is desperately trying to find the main lab and cut off the production from the source and hasn’t been able to find a lead in weeks.
That’s when Gordon gives him a file that was given to him by a “white haired ghost kid”. It’s a detailed report written similarly to a scientific journal with detailed sources that are mainly first hand accounts from deceased victims of the Two-Face drug.
At the very end of the paper there’s an address to a Gotham University dorm room with a sticky note next to it that says “if you need help with death or the undead. Yours truly; Danny Fenton.”
#guys look at the tags I’m too lazy to add it to the main post#my thoughts as to why Danny hated English is because he’s helped write so many scientific papers for his parents the writing style#is ingrained into his day to day writing. this time tho he was trying to be professional for The Batman#he doesn’t want to step on Batman’s territory but since he now lives in Gotham might as well give the main powerhouse a#‘high just letting you know I’m in your city now’ gift#he doesn’t even try to hide his identity because he knows that Batman will find it eventually.#might as well help and fulfill his obsession as a consultant to the Bats#Batman now asks Danny to help with communing with the dead to help solve cases#dpxdc#danny phantom#dp x dc#bones prompts#bones writes in the tags
