There should be no “But”- - an essay
By Daemon J.
I choose to write to express my sorrow and exasperation with the numerous views that are being spread throughout this turbulent time. I write this because I have a voice and I have something to say. Furthermore, I write this to address the schisms we have in this nation regarding our thoughts what actions are “right”.
However, before getting to these things I want to make one thing abundantly clear; BLACK LIVES MATTER. And not just in the context of the current injustices we see on the media.
-BLACK LIVES MATTER when it comes to the impoverished neighborhoods that many reside in.
-BLACK LIVES MATTER regarding the quality of education available to this group.
-BLACK LIVES MATTER when it comes to the quality and availability of adequate medical care.
-BLACK LIVES MATTER when it comes to life chances and social mobility.
-BLACK LIVES MATTER in correctional institutions where many are disproportionately incarcerated.
-BLACK LIVES MATTER when these persons are released back into their communities.
This is not an exhaustive list of when, why, or in what context black lives matter. In fact, they are but a few examples that need to also be heeded. These statements aren’t made to incite further divisiveness across communities. They are made to bring these other areas where this group struggles in the forefront. Make no mistake, there are many other groups of people that experience these hardships as well as others, however, it has become abundantly clear that minorities have taken the brunt of these issues. Furthermore, when the attention wanes from what’s currently happening, this energy needs to be brought to many more topics in positive ways.
Regarding the current civil demonstrations across the globe, I for one thank every last individual that is choosing to use their voice and presence to raise awareness to the brutality we are witnessing against this group. I feel sorrow for the nation I call home because of how it has and is treating a group of people that helped build this country. In my opinion, reparations for these past transgressions haven’t been paid to this group of people and yet we as a nation still choose to repress their voices and ignore their cries for help. I am in no way supportive of the rioting and looting; that is not the proper course of action. However, I can see clearly why these acts of aggression are being carried out. This is one group among those that have been hushed, suppressed, oppressed, mistreated, alienated, and criminalized for so long that the frustration they hold has once again surpassed a critical threshold. Allow me to be clear, past and present wrongs do not justify such actions, though the blame falls on us all.
By ignoring the everyday injustices, we helped to promote these events.
By not standing up for and with this group, they remained ignored.
By choosing to stay silent when others slander this group, we promote their mistreatment.
By allowing the people we know use racial slurs at all, we perpetuate that hatred.
By permitting the authorities to act how they see fit and without restraint, we add to this group’s oppression.
By protesting their protests and voicing our disdain for their non-violent approaches, their voices become hushed.
By not acknowledging there ever was/is a systematic problem, we help to keep this group down.
Ultimately, if you choose to not stand up for them in their times of need how can you say you treat or think of everyone equally? Not to claim that you are inherently racist, just bringing awareness to the fact that you are LETTING racism and discrimination happen. The key question that follows is: “Are you really any different from those who mean to do this group harm?” Because essentially, you ARE doing this group harm.
For the ALL LIVES MATTER people, I get it. I really do. You believe that everyone should be treated equally and no one race is superior to others. You believe that all lives are not only important but that should be cherished and protected equally. Those are wonderful sentiments; however, they are misguided when you do not stand up for the lives that need help the most. If you are silent after witnessing the devastation of ANY group whether they are gay, black, white, Asian, Jewish or otherwise, you can’t possibly claim “ALL LIVES MATTER”. For the simple fact that: some groups are being treated as lower class citizens, discriminated against, are trafficked at higher rates than others, are disproportionately brutalized and arrested, and receive subpar medical care and education compared to their counterparts should be galvanizing to you. You should be the ones to stand up for EACH and EVERY group that is being oppressed or mistreated in ANY way. You should be the biggest advocates to BLACK LIVES MATTER, especially during this time but aren’t. You’re being force fed examples of mistreatment in social media and in the news channels yet, you stay silent?
Now that, is something I don’t get it.
What I also don’t understand is why some many individuals are saying “but”. There shouldn’t be anyone saying “but”, if injustice exists anywhere. That issue should have and should be addressed with no “but” in tow. Furthermore, it shouldn’t have to take rioting and looting to get this issue the attention it needs. There shouldn’t need to be as many deaths as have been witnessed over the years for anyone to step up. We as a country need to progress and address the deep-seated hatred and discrimination that Black/African Americans have been suffered through. If we as a nation did what we were supposed to do, these riots and looting wouldn’t be happening. That is the main issue. For any person reading this that wants to say “but” you are choosing to disregard the struggles of this group. It would be much more acceptable to say “and”. That indicates that you at least acknowledge that there are numerous problems and one doesn’t supersede the other. For those that can’t seem to want to go all in with the Black/African American community, this is your chance to acknowledge that there is a problem and its importance is no less than the rioting. However, when/if you feel relieved by being able to say something better than “but” be mindful of this: if this group was heard during the peaceful protests, these riots wouldn’t have happened.
Next, I want to make it clear that the rioting, looting, and the destruction of public property needs to stop. For better or worse, the stage has been set. These voices are now being heard and can attempt to promote change in more positive ways. Causing destruction to these communities isn’t the move, and it’s counterproductive. These communities will have to deal with the aftermath, which may bring a host of other issues; so, it’s time to adjust the approach. Protest peacefully and put this same energy into more detrimental acts against the economy that don’t involve violence or criminal acts. Support your local black-owned businesses, contact local branches of civil rights groups and get involved, become a peaceful activist, boycott companies that are against the reversal of racial injustice. Organize more days like Blackout Tuesday, the community refuses to spend money or take part in social media. Reach out to your local and state politicians to urge them to take action. Better yet, get involved in politics and run for offices. So many offices and congressional seats go unopposed that it is baffling. Shock the nation and the world in these impactful ways and the message will be heard. And for those who may not identify as Black/African American, that ask “well, what can I do?”, you can do these same things. Moreover, you should be having those difficult and uncomfortable talks with your friends and family about racism and discrimination to raise awareness and stop the cycle.
Most importantly, get out and vote. And not just at the national level. More impactful changes can be made when you focus on putting the right people in office at the local and state levels. Elections at the federal level are extremely important, still vote at that level. However, voting at the local and state levels and putting the right people in CONGRESS are the ways to make considerable changes. Get to know WHO you have been letting win congressional seats for so long.
Finally, I will end this essay with two more comments.
-You now have the stage, what will you do with it and how will you be remembered?
-There should be no “But”.
P.S. On a larger scale, you can look through these links to find an organization and help in their mission. The lists aren’t exhaustive but here they are here as a reference to contact them and get involved.

Every person in the world has the ability, whether it's female or male or gay. We just have to respect each other and stop abusing anyone. Let's end the abuse on people who can't raise theirselves to fight.

LOVE THY SELF we as women are so programmed to hate ourselves, our bodies, our hair, our complexion. I don't see men walking around with the same kind of shame self loathing that we as women do. It pains me to say that this is a universal female truth.

Sometimes the most painful lessons are the most important ones.... But it still hurts no matter how many times the lesson comes back into our lives. We are all humans and what comes with being a human is our ability to have and feel feelings. No one is immune to life’s challenges.. No one needs to struggle alone with their sometimes seemingly unsurmountable and without a doubt painful life lessons. Reach out if you are struggles as it’s ok to not be ok.. #lifelessons #pain #hurt #loneliness #lifecanbehard #youdonthavetobealone #youarenotalone #itsoktonotbeok #letsbereal #endmentalhealthstigma #mentalhealthmatters #endsuicide #endthepain #traumarecovery #vulnerabilityisstrength #bevulnerable #bellletstalk #lifeishardsometimes #reachout (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/sportspsychpaige/p/Bu0XRGcgT-S/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1xxwd56d3t3vl

"I can tell you it's more than just frustration, I am angry. About 3 years ago, in a similar situation to yours, a simple cystectomy turned into a 5-hour surgery. Stage 4 endo all up in my business. After 2 surgeries, I have been left in doubt of the attention paid to women's health. On the outside, I have all the robotic surgery scars and a larger one similar to what a cesarean scar looks like, which every time I see it is like seeing a sick ironic joke because I will struggle to ever get pregnant naturally due to the severity of my disease. On the inside the scars are worse, my heart breaks that so many women have suffered in silence. We are finally getting attention but it's not enough. I don't want pain management, a hysterectomy, or a shot to put me into early menopause as my treatment options. Constant birth control has slowed my cysts, but that is a bandaid on a bigger issue. I damn near demand a cure for something that affects so many women. I am currently fighting, I know others who are fighting, but we all deserve better than what health care has offered us thus far. Thank you for working on change! Also, I'm sure they talked to you about it, but there are some endo studies I am a part of for those that have been diagnosed surgically. And they would be a good ally and resource on your website! I can send em your way if you need it. Keep fighting sister in arms 👊" - Kate, Dallas, TX

My Struggle III or How I Learned to Love the Beam of Light
a light beam shines in to Scully’s eye as she stares up at the ARV above.
BOOM–the ARV disintegrates her.
Mulder succumbs to the virus, falls out of the car and explodes until he dies.  DEAD.
Miller jumps off the bridge.  He explodes mid air and this kills him.
Daggoo walks by and starts chewing on Mulder’s bit and pieces. Don’t worry, the virus cannot be spread from a human to a canine and he is taking little bites.
The Were Lizard runs by and lets out a shriek when he sees Daggoo.
They walk off together in to the moonlight as Daggoo marks his territory on a few corpses of the humans that have fallen over dead from exploding.
No need for any more episodes.  THE END

The Demon Within So this is my dark side. It use to have a name and a gender. But as I've grown older and my feelings stronger, so did the demon. The demon within me is just that. A demon. A manifestation of my severe anxiety and severe depression. Along with the ill temper I have. It hates everyone and everything that gets in its way. The demon will kill anyone that pushes its buttons the wrong way. Making me feel every inch of the pain within my chest. Filling my mind with negativity, hate, suicidal thoughts.. The demon wants the pain to end, believe it or not. And the only solution it has is, well, death. I do everything I can to prevent suicide from happening. But as of recent... I'm slowly losing the battle.. #deperession #anxiety #demons #pain #endthepain

Money
Money money money. You can’t live with or without it. If you have no money you are at the bottom of society’s food chain. If your fortunate enough to have money don’t play in society and need to “keep up with the Jones” attitude. When it comes to me? I’ve been on both sides of the fence and they both have brought no enjoyment. Now I work my life away to make it and never get to enjoy it. Almost liked life better with less money because you have more time to live life and try to enjoy the short time we have on earth. Either work to live or live to work. And in these times of hardship it’s not easy to see the light on the other side. It always seems like one giant circle in this game of life. Where you get the things to strived and worked hard for and then it all crashes down in one way or another.
