“So, if you really want to compare the Mark 3 and the Mark 4, you gotta look at the injectors, because more efficient fuel transference means more horsepower…”
Your friend Rory was chatting to Bucky about his favourite subject. Cars. Bucky was trying not to let his eyes glaze over.
“Do you think we ought to rescue him?” You leant over, and stage-whispered into Kate’s ear. The dark-haired archer covered her giggle with her hand, but both of you caught Bucky’s slight side glance toward where you were both sitting, enjoying your cocktails.
You’d decided to hold a cook-out for your birthday so there was a mix of all of your old friends, and all of the new friends you’d made through Bucky.
Growing up you’d had more male friends than female, a cabal of honorary brothers, so you’d always known that when you finally settled down your boys would have to at least partially haze your chosen partner, and then once accepted he would be absorbed into their group, whether he wanted to be or not.
‘Love me, love my bros.’
When you’d first introduced them to Bucky they’d been sceptical. You couldn’t blame them. Firstly, he was actually the only boyfriend you’d made ‘run the gauntlet’ so they knew you were serious. Secondly, it was James ‘Bucky’ Barnes. A man born in 1917, held hostage, tortured and brainwashed into committing heinous crimes for decades, before breaking free, becoming a fugitive, and then, finally being deprogrammed and pardoned. There was a lot to unpack there.
However, it seemed that he’d passed whatever test they’d put him through, because as soon as they’d arrived today, Rory, Jerome, Lee and the others stumbling out of an SUV, they’d practically kidnapped Bucky away from you and the rest of the Avengers.
And bless your guys, it was sweet. They wanted to include Bucky in all of their conversations about cars, computers, hockey and football. He could join in, obviously. He wasn’t completely clueless about those topics, but having grown up in the Great Depression, those sorts of things hadn’t been the focus of his youth. A different time, a different place.
“I saw a flying car once.”
“Bro! Really?” Rory stopped his rambling at Bucky’s statement and you felt the smile creep over your lips.
“Yeah, the 1944 World Expo. Howard Stark was showing off the car of the future. It was shiny and red. Oh I wanted a car like that, so bad, even if the prototype had a few bugs.  Still pissed when I found out that neither Howard or Tony had been able to make it a reality.”
“So this Expo was full of, like, futuristic shit?”
You watched them over your sunglasses, the boys all leaning in now, hanging on Bucky’s every word.
“Well, for 1944 it was definitely futuristic. But if you really want to talk futuristic, you gotta know about some of the tech they have in Wakanda.”
For emphasis, Bucky straightened out his left arm, wiggling his fingers and your friend’s mouths all dropped open as they watched the plates shift and heard the servos whir.
“You gotta tell us about Wakanda, man.” Jerome pushed himself slightly forward. “I can’t believe you’re tight with the royal family. Is Princess Shuri as hot in real life?”
Uh-oh. You winced internally. Bucky just raised an eyebrow, before speaking again.
“You know how you guys feel about Angel-face over there? About how if I’d disrespected her you’d all try to take me apart? Well that’s how I feel about Shuri. So you wanna ask me another question?”
Jerome had the good grace to look embarrassed and suddenly find a burning interest in his shoes. There was an awkward silence for a moment, before Lee leant forward.
“They’ve got some kind of Mag-lev trains haven’t they? Faster than the Japanese ones?”
You let out the breath you’d hadn’t even realised you’d been holding, as Bucky’s mouth broke into a broad grin.
“Anyone got a pen and paper. I’m gonna need to do some visual aids for you chumps.”
They all broke out into peels of laughter and you turned back to Kate.
“Scratch that. I think he’s gonna be just fine.”

Safran partners with the Egyptian Air Force to improve the performance of the Rafale fleet
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at Egypt Defense Expo 2023 sets the stage for the implementation of EngineLife services.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/12/2023 - 16:00 in Military
Safran Aircraft Engines and the Egyptian Air Force solidified their partnership at Egypt Defense Expo 2023 by signing a memorandum of understanding for EngineLife services, tailored for the Dassault Aviation Rafale with M88 engine.
This agreement focuses on lifetime support (TLS) for Egypt's 24 Rafale fleet, introducing an hourly support model with guaranteed availability levels.
The hourly support model comes with availability levels, aiming to maximize engine uptime and minimize cost of ownership.
Egypt placed an initial order for 24 Rafale aircraft in 2015 for an original value of $5.2 to 6 billion. The agreement initially included the sale of eight variants of Rafale-EM and 16 variants of Rafale-DM.
In 2019, Dassault had completed the delivery of 24 Rafale fighters and, in May 2021, Egypt signed a subsequent order to purchase 30 additional Rafale aircraft, bringing the total number of Rafale fuselages ordered to 54 fuselages. The subsequent new order for 30 additional Rafale fuselages is expected to cost $8.7 billion and will be delivered by 2026.
EngineLife offers a set of services tailored to each customer, including the deployment of personnel to support on-site mechanics, optimization of maintenance operations, team technical support to maximize engine potential and logistics management between Safran Aircraft Engines and the customer.
Tumblr media
Christophe Bruneau, vice president of military engines at Safran Aircraft Engines, expressed his honor in signing the MoU with the Egyptian Air Force: “We are honored to sign this MoU with the Egyptian Air Force as part of the launch of our new EngineLife offer. After the successful entry into service of the M88 in Egypt's Rafale fleet, we are now intensifying our support agreements to ensure that our customer has the highest levels of engine availability for their flight operations."
This collaborative service approach involves sharing maintenance tasks between Safran and the Egyptian Air Force, allowing local mechanics at the base to benefit from Safran's experience in TLS. The goal is to strengthen the skills of local personnel, optimize fleet availability and exercise better control over operating costs for M88 operators.
Egyptian Air Force Marshal Mahmoud Fouad Abdel-Gawad said: “Safran Aircraft Engines has been an important partner in supporting the success of the Egyptian Air Force for many years. We are very pleased to strengthen our long-term partnership with the company through this memorandum of understanding and hope to see the benefits of EngineLife for the availability of our fleet."
With the acquisition of Rafale combat aircraft, the Egyptian Air Force is expected to gain a capacity advantage in the region against its immediate neighbors, such as Sudan, with whom it has territorial and water disputes.

We're about a month away from the release of WISH...
Walt Disney Animation Studios, and by extension the whole dang company built on this cartoon bedrock, celebrated their 100th year yesterday... ABC aired ENCANTO, in addition to the world premiere of the short film ONCE UPON A STUDIO (which apparently has now been chopped off of WISH and will debut elsewhere), and an edited version of the WISH trailer... Nothing pertaining to the future was unveiled...
(By the by, I don't have cable, so... I didn't get to see ONCE UPON A STUDIO. Sadface.)
You'd think, for the company's 100th anniversary... That there'd be *some* word on what was coming up next from Walt Disney Animation Studios?
Their new movie is in theaters next month, and we don't know what the November 27, 2024 release from them is...
By now, we usually know what's next... For example:
WISH was first unveiled in September 2022 at the D23 Expo, which was a little over a year before the movie's target release date.
STRANGE WORLD, by contrast, was announced a little under a year before its release. That film was revealed to the public via the trades and Disney themselves on their socials.
ENCANTO was revealed in December 2020 during the company's Investors Day event, that less than a year before it came out.
RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON was another D23 reveal, the August 2019 one to be exact. At the time, RAYA was set to be a Thanksgiving 2020 release until COVID-19 complications pushed it to March 2021.
This, of course, does not count the rumors and scoops. Sometimes, various sites get news on Disney animated movies before Disney themselves say anything. For example, long before Disney announced RAYA in August 2019 to the public, scooper sites were revealing info like "WDAS' next movie is DRAGON EMPIRE". I sometimes heard stuff from the trenches, which was always fun. I remember little snips of what ENCANTO was going to be maybe a year or two before announcement? STRANGE WORLD is interesting because not only were scoopers saying a movie called "Searcher Clade" was coming, but the Venture - the airship the Clade family and the explorers use to reach Avalonia's insides - was Easter Egged in the ENCANTO credits. ENCANTO debuted just a few weeks before the announcement, not even...
So yeah, I thought I'd look at the patterns of their recent releases. We're definitely well beyond the days where you'd hear about things 2-3 years in advance. Remember how ZOOTOPIA, a March 2016 release, was first unveiled at the 2013 D23 Expo? Fun times.
I'm guessing we'll hear about this new WDAS movie, reportedly an original fantasy story set in the Middle East (is this Suzi Yoonessi's film?), either right before WISH comes out... Or maybe a little after. Maybe current world events pertaining to the setting would make an imminent announcement seem a little insensitive?
After this movie, all we know about on the horizon are undated FROZEN and ZOOTOPIA sequels, with next to no info on who's attached.
There's also still the Disney+ shows that are in the works. We got none this year, despite earlier reports indicating otherwise. IWAJU, MOANA: The Series, and TIANA remain without firm release dates, but are all aiming for next year. IWAJU's absence is especially unusual, it's pretty far long as far as I know. Last year's D23, again - in September, gave us an image. Maybe it's been pulled back? Retooled? Maybe because it was outsourced to Cinesite and kinda resembles a Disney Junior show... Maybe it's been dropped as a WDAS project and is now a Disney TV Animation production? It's only speculation on my end, because that show is a collaboration with upstart Nigerian house Kugali, and that would be a partnership squandered if WDAS passed on the show.
Anyways, with Pixar... We got WIN OR LOSE around the corner, and next year ELIO and INSIDE OUT 2 have firm release dates. Both of those, by the way, officially revealed at the September 2022 D23 Expo. Pixar usually rolls 'em well before release, WDAS cuts it a lot closer these days for some reason. Like, are we gonna know what the summer 2025 Pixar movie is *before* the fall 2024 WDAS movie? (I'm being facetious here, haha.)
I'll keep trying to be patient, but I'm like burning to know... What is *this* movie?
Worth noting that a while back, Disney Animation CCO Jennifer Lee stated that Suzi Yoonessi, Josie Trinidad, and Marc Smith had movies in the works. At the time, Carlos Lopez Estrada had a movie in the works as well, but then he was pulled off of it (reportedly called FOSTER) to take over RAYA... and then he left Disney altogether not too long after RAYA came out. He was also set to direct a live-action/CGI ROBIN HOOD remake for the enterprise... So that leaves Yoonessi (whose Instagram bio still says "Director - Disney Animation"), Trinidad (who recently directed episodes of ZOOTOPIA+), and Smith (who was recently revealed to have come up with the idea for FROZEN III, he's probably directing that if Chris Buck is unavailable).
So yeah... This information, along with two sequels...
I said it before, but I don't think either ZOOTOPIA 2 or FROZEN III are next year's movie. If they were, I think we'd know who is directing/writing/etc. FROZEN III, given that Marc Smith came up with the idea, might be closer to us than ZOOTOPIA 2 is. Or not. FROZEN II came out 4 years ago, ZOOTOPIA is over 7 years old, one would think ZOOTOPIA 2 comes first. They're just very mum on who is involved. I'd like to think ZOOTOPIA 2 isn't being directed by Byron Howard, who is likely pursuing another original movie after ENCANTO, but maybe not? ZOOTOPIA 2 might reincorporate the whole movies' worth of ideas that were thrown out during its development (I particularly like that more James Bond-like story set on an island that it could've been), or maybe it'll go for an all-new story and idea. I have no idea where FROZEN III could go, I'm not as invested in those movies.
While WDAS usually does one-a-year, always settling for Thanksgiving, it'd be cool if they take a year where Pixar doesn't have two new movies, and release two movies that year. If they FEASIBLY CAN, that is. We don't want CRUNCH, now... But in the scenario that they could... Pixar has two for 2024, and two for 2026... Who's to say... WDAS can't slot in, maybe, ZOOTOPIA 2 in the spring of 2025, and have an original out for Thanksgiving? Just spitballing, here. ZOOTOPIA and MOANA both came out in 2016, so why the heck not?
Anyways, hope to know more soon about what's up with the studio that's literally why this whole damn company even exists in the first place.

Suddenly we made a mess of waste
Tumblr media
Tell me what you throw away and I'll tell you who you are. The same goes for our entire society. Our waste crisis has a long history.
It is a gesture that you repeat several times a day, almost thoughtlessly: you hang your hand over a rubbish bin to throw something away. Freeze that image. Tell me what you throw away and I'll tell you who you are. It's a cliché, but if there's any of it, what does that garbage tell you? And by extension: what does Europe's waste mountain tell us about our continent?
Throwing away is a relief, but we conveniently forget that the 'way' in throwing away is also a destination. Waste is one of the most visible environmental problems, but we have not always looked at waste in the same way. Social and societal changes have profoundly changed our view of garbage. The House of European History[1] in the EU-Neighbourhood in Brussels built an exhibition[2] about that history and about the causes of our waste mountain. The museum is also doing its own thing: the expo opens with an installation that incorporates the waste that the museum has collected over the course of a year. Even without the organic waste (which could not be preserved) the waste mountain is impressive.
Tumblr media
The expo shows that waste tells a story with some striking examples. Take the Venus of Trieu Khúc, for example: it looks like a sculpture somewhat similar to the Venus of Willendorf. In reality, it is a clump of pieces of plastic fused together, picked up at a smelter in Vietnam.
Tumblr media
Or there is the cracked glass bottle that archaeologists unearthed in a former labour camp in Spain: it contained a syrup that was taken to combat malnutrition. It tells a story of the poverty and deprivation of the prisoners who built the Valle de los Caídos, the monument in honour of dictator Francisco Franco.
Burnt bones
After the expo has given impulses to your thoughts, it moves on to a historical overview. In pre-industrial Europe, people lived from and with their waste. What was destroyed or broken was repaired or given a new function. Waste from one process became a raw material for another. Excrement from the city had a great value as fertiliser in the countryside. Even in the first phase of industrialisation, a lot was still reused. Whole industries depended on waste: rags were used to make cardboard and paper, bones were boiled and processed to make buttons, combs, fertiliser and gelatine. In the 19th century, burnt bones were used to decolour beet sugar. The work of people who collected and processed waste was difficult, poorly paid and often dangerous: the exhibition features 19th-century examples of skin diseases contracted by rag pickers.
The introduction of fertilisers and new papermaking techniques made collecting excrement, bones and rags superfluous. It became cheaper to make and consume products, and people started throwing things away. The urban population increased, there was more luxury and goods were increasingly packaged individually. The growing mountain of waste quickly became a burden and a concern: waste caused diseases. Cholera epidemics broke out. Public hygiene received more attention, sewers were built, polluted rivers were vaulted. People no longer threw their waste on the street: the rubbish bin and organised waste collection were introduced. That, of course, meant that the waste was simply moved: burned, discharged into the river or dumped in landfills.
The first Albert Heijn
In the twentieth century, people forgot the value of waste – except in times of need: during World War I and the crisis of the 1930s. World War II was about more than survival: women and children had to use paper, metal, bone , collecting rope and rubber to support the war economy: 'Up housewives and at 'em', says a poster with bravely marching women. “Put out your paper, metal, bones: they make planes, guns, tanks, ships and ammunition.”
Tumblr media
After the war, the time of mass consumption arrived: 'I shop, therefore I am'. Manufacturers encouraged that behaviour by designing products that could be quickly replaced. Europe became a throwaway society. You get to see a beautiful image of the time, from the first disposable cameras to advertisements for pantyhose’s and the first Albert Heijn[3] supermarkets. But when the pollution became painfully visible in the 1970s, it became clear what impact waste had on nature. Waste became a political issue: dumping was more strictly restricted in Europe. But that didn't stop us from exporting our waste to Asia and Africa.
The last part of the expo reflects on a more sustainable future, based on the four Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle and repair: new words for often old habits. Throwing it away is never as easy as it seems. Thoughtlessly throwing something in the garbage can is no longer an option.

[2] The history of a modern crisis -  18 FEBRUARY 2023 - 14 JANUARY 2024. Rubbish. Perhaps the most visible and physical aspect of the looming environmental crisis. ‘’Throwaway’’ is a project that unearths the hidden history of waste in Europe while simultaneously highlighting its significance as a marker of social change. Starting with the industrial revolution, ‘’Throwaway’’ brings us on a journey through wartime scarcity, the surge in post-war consumerism, and finishes with today’s insurmountable waste crisis. It displays the profound changes in how we have dealt with rubbish in bygone years, and the way we think, or don’t think about waste. By looking at the past, it makes current criticisms and the resounding calls for change relevant and meaningful. https://historia-europa.ep.eu/en/throwaway

What Does the Future Hold for Casino & Slots?
The very first (physical) slot machine emerged in 1891, the same year that Carnegie Hall and the Wrigley Company were founded, the year Nikola Tesla invented his famous Tesla coil, and the same year that the venerable Swiss Army Knife first went into production. SLOT ONLINE casino slots are, obviously, a bit more of a recent development, evolving in tandem with video games and the internet, and only taking the form we know today from 1996 onwards.
But, a century on from the unveiling of Sittman and Pitt’s first slot-based gambling machine, the casual eye might find little difference between the casino slots of the 19th century and the digital versions played today. The presentation of each experience has evolved, with new graphics and ways to win, but many of the rules, mechanisms, and symbols are the same. You can still find online casino slots using the same symbols that Charles Fey’s Liberty Bell slot debuted in 1899, like in The Royal Family slot – though, it’s quite rare to receive a payout of cigars for a royal flush in this century.
Dungeoneering
While it might be subtle, casino developers have maintained a culture of innovation throughout the game’s history. The first recognizably modern slot, using video reels rather than mechanical ones, appeared in 1976, while Three Bags Full and the still-playable Reel ’em In introduced second screen bonuses towards the end of the millennium. Both of these elements are so common as to be mundane today, featuring in titles as diverse as Viking Runecraft and the Mega Moolah ISIS slot online, so progress has had to take a different path.
Arguably, the need to attract younger players to casino slots has influenced modern game design more than any other factor, placing interactivity and skill at the centre of the experience. Casino games that make use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have recently appeared at game expos like ICE, while a world-first RPG-based casino title, Dungeon: Immortal Evil, from EvoPlay, is part-slot, part-hack n’ slash game. Dungeon: Immortal Evil is the latest in a series of console-style casino games that began appearing around 2018, following on from Konami’s Beat Square, Safari Match and ZOMBIE$ by Synergy Blue, and Arkanoid, a cash-based update of the 1986 Taito game. Some of these new titles are unusual enough to require their own unique cabinets or dedicated casino floor space.
Simplicity
However, it’s worth noting that, for all the bells and whistles that developers have added to the experience, changes to the actual gameplay in new casino slots are often minimal. Let’s take Dungeon: Immortal Evil as an example. While obviously designed to appeal to players more accustomed to the likes of God of War and Final Fantasy, it’s still a single-click slot game. ‘Spinning’ the reels simply makes your hero run into combat, with the spoils of war or ‘loot’ forming the value of the player’s reward.
There’s no benefit to complicating a game that’s been sold on simplicity for 130 years. And, for that reason, it’s hard to draw comparisons between a luck-based game like Starburst and a skill-based one such as Arkanoid. So, even with new, more complex experiences joining the market, the niche occupied by casino slots isn’t under threat. Changes to the experience are likely to focus more on platforms and presentation going forward, with VR and AR an early example of this. The popular slot Gonzo’s Quest already has a VR version, for instance, albeit as a tech demo.
Presentation
As the stalls at ICE 2020 demonstrated, both online and offline casinos seem to be focussed more on quality of life improvements (larger screens, better resolutions, more streamlined tech, etc) rather than any seismic changes to the online casino slots themselves. However, with increasingly larger screens, older games are likely to become less visibly attractive, which presents a problem for developers. The size of the new Fixed Odds Betting Machines debuted at ICE, which all have three screens stacked vertically, will be useless for all but bespoke software.
That brings us to VR and AR, two technologies that have been circling the drain for a long time now, yet retain the obvious potential that brought them the limelight in the first place. Unfortunately, with both Oculus’ and Google’s respective decisions to end mobile VR development, casino developers are unlikely to find any reason to continue investing in the technology. Similarly, AR has proven to be a popular but niche tool, with much of its success rooted in location-based games like Pokémon Go and Jurassic World Alive, as well as in architectural and industrial applications.
Going Forward
So, what’s next for casino slots? It’s inevitable that the casino industry as a whole will continue to borrow themes and mechanics from standard video games. The same seems to be occurring in reverse too, with 2K Games sports titles featuring an increasing number of gambling-orientated mini-games such as pachinko. However, while many of the more ‘gamified’ titles have adopted a skill-centric approach to entertainment, simplicity and retro appeal continues to typify the development of new slot titles. As for VR, its overall cost of entry is still too high and its ‘killer app’ is still missing.
One final revelation from ICE was that celebrity endorsements of slot machine remain popular with players. At Betsson, we already have slots dedicated to metal band Testament, Ozzy Osbourne, and Michael Jackson but casino dev Ganapati is currently working with Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt on a new celebrity slot. It’s perhaps this ongoing connection to popular culture and wider entertainment that has allowed slot machines to stay relevant for the past century or more.
