Love is a Dagger: III
Tumblr media
Pairings: Loki x Fem!Reader/Dagger
Warnings: Desperate!Loki. Reader is in a coma this entire chapter. Steve still has a crush on you. Mutual Pining, sort of. Still a Slow Burn. Angst.
Wordcount: 2,263
Summary: The Avengers spend much of their time attempting to awaken you from your coma. Many disagreements ensue, leading to what could be your demise.
A/N: So so sorry for the late onset of this chapter! I have had quite a bit going on lately, as I am shifting career paths in the next few weeks. Nonetheless, this chapter is here, although the quality may not be the best, as I wrote it all on my phone in Google Drive lol.
Here is the Masterlist for this series if you need, as well as Chapter II.
Loki watched as you tumbled backwards onto the ground, and simultaneously, his brother awoke. He yelled your name, rushing towards you so that he could try and catch you, which he narrowly missed. Your shoulders hit the ground, but thankfully your head landed in his lap. You were blanched of color, your typical hue was drained via your life force.
“Fuck, fuck!” Loki shouted, taking you in his arms bridal style and running into the hallway. He failed to recognize that his brother had even woken, he was too worried for you. “Help!” he yelled desperately, surprised as Tony and Steve made a quick appearance.
“Bro-brother? Are w-we doing get help?” Thor groaned from his bed, drastically unaware of the situation unfolding around him. Loki had to hold back the urge to use his seidr to put pressure on his brother’s forehead and force him back down onto the pillow.
“Loki, what are you doing? You could be doing her harm by holding her.” Steve ushered, reaching his hands out, fingertips barely grazing your skin.
“As much as I hate to agree with Capsicle here, he’s got a point.” Stark warned, and Loki hesitantly handed your blanched form over to the Captain. Medical personnel approached within milliseconds, and you were placed on a gurney to be transported to the nearest room while they assessed you.
〰//  ▬ʃ════▻   ⋆༺𓆩⚔️𓆪༻⋆   ◅════ʅ▬  \\〰
“She wasted much of her life energy to heal Thor. Given that it was herself and Loki who caused the damage, it seems to me that it would require both parties to heal him. Unfortunately, Dagger did it on her own, which caused the majority of her life force to drain from her.” The doctor stated.
The employees on the medical wing had spent the last twenty minutes working to stabilize you, which they were successful in doing. You were unfortunately unconscious still, and they were uncertain as to if, or when, you would awaken.
Steve, Loki, and Tony stood in your room, awaiting further instructions from the doctor.
“Is there anything we can do?” Stark questioned, to which the doctor shrugged, much to Loki’s dismay.
“I’m sorry, aren’t you considered an elite healer in this realm?” Loki asked accusingly. The doctor looked at him puzzled, before he glanced at Loki’s appearance, and then responded.
“Yes, but unfortunately, Y/N’s life energy is not of this world. Now that she has drained it, I do not know whether or not she can be healed with our techniques.”
“Then use different ones.” Loki spoke simply, as if this clarification made the solution within the scope of possibility.
“It’s not that simple.” The man answered, aggravating Loki, who got up and stomped out of the room.
“These magic people, I swear to God” Tony cursed. “You give them one person who compliments their powers, and suddenly, they’re obsessed! It’s like Vis-“
Tony was cut off when suddenly, another group of Avengers made way to join the conversation in your room. Wanda, Vision, Banner, and Natasha all approached, looking melancholic at your near lifeless state. “What the hell happened?” Natasha spoke first.
“She healed Thor with her life force. I think she felt bad about what happened at training this morning.” Steve explained, with the group nodding in understanding. “So she used the whole thing?” Wanda asked, trying to understand how a simple healing turned into a monumental disaster.
“Close to it, at least.” The doctor piped in.
“God, Y/N! She might have gotten herself killed.” Wanda exclaimed.
“She didn’t know. She just wanted to heal Thor.” Steve was quick to defend your position.
“Speaking of, is he okay?” Banner asked, while Tony and Steve nodded. “One of the other doctors is filling him in.”
“Well, I say we discuss this more in the morning. She’s stable now, and I think she’ll remain as such as long as no more of her life force is drained. Let’s sleep, and meet at 7 promptly in the boardroom.” Tony suggested, while the rest of the team nodded. It was fairly late, especially after all of the antics.
The team shuffled out of the space, allowing the nurses to attend to you as they could. Meanwhile, you remained in a dreamful deep sleep.
〰//  ▬ʃ════▻   ⋆༺𓆩⚔️𓆪༻⋆   ◅════ʅ▬  \\〰
A glow of light cast upon your vision, much like a fog.
“Y/N.”
What the hell was that? Who’s saying my name??
Is that…? Cloak? “Cloak?”
“So you do remember.” The voice spoke once more. What?
“Remember what?” You questioned.
“Me, Dagger. Your partner in crime.” Yes, it must be Cloak.
“I could never forget you. Ever. You are everything to me.” You feverishly grasped at the air, hoping to catch a feeling of your past love.
“Were.” The voice was sterner now than previously.
“What do you mean?” You asked, downtrodden at the thought of Cloak being upset with you.
“There’s a new someone for you, beautiful. A new everything.”
What?? No. “No. Cloak, you’re wrong.”
“You don’t want to believe it, because you’re scared. But you have a new half. One that may suit you better than I ever did.”
“That’s not possible.”
“It is, Dagger. I’m telling you, it’s true. I know, it’s scary. But I promise it’s okay.”
“No, no, no. I’m not leaving you.” You begged, reaching out for him even more desperately now.
“I’ve left you, Dag. I left that lifetime. But I’ll always be with you. You must know that already. Please, accept that. Go to him, be with him. Finish what we started.”
With that, the whiteness that was displayed in your vision faded back to black.
〰//  ▬ʃ════▻   ⋆༺𓆩⚔️𓆪༻⋆   ◅════ʅ▬  \\〰
Loki had tried to sleep in his own quarters initially, but was unsuccessful. His mind was flooded with thoughts of you. How you were doing, if you would remain alive, if he had ruined his chances with the only woman he had desired to court in the last century? God, if you would even accept such an arrangement with him?
He liked you. More than liked.
But your past seemed to haunt you more than his did, at least when it came to romance. You seemed rather stubborn in regards to love, especially pertaining to moving on from Cloak. Even if you did, Loki was partially certain that you would lean towards the goody goody Steve Rogers as your choice. Loki was used to being second choice, especially in that he grew up in the God of Thunder’s shadow.
Loki spent the remainder of the night in your room, laying on a spare sofa near your bed. He pondered whether or not touching you was a positive or negative. He knew he had drained your life energy previously, as both Captain Rogers and Stark so eloquently reminded him. However, he also knew that his seidr offered healing abilities, and that the energy that you had both created this morning that decimated Thor was extravagant.
He hoped you could create it again. Together, you were absolutely a force to be reckoned with. Hell, you took down a god. Thor Odinson, of all gods. Loki’s brother. How he had waited for the day, yearned for the day, where he took his brother down. But now, it was at the cost of your safety. Possibly your life.
Eventually, being near you helped to calm Loki, and he was able to fall into a light slumber. He still woke up a few times during the night, primarily from the chimes coming from various machines. Part of him hoped you’d be awoken as well.
He also neglected to notice your adjacent hands reaching out towards the other’s body, as if hoping to latch on to one another. Even though there were several feet between the two of you, your connection seemed undeniable.
To everyone but yourself and Loki, at least.
〰//  ▬ʃ════▻   ⋆༺𓆩⚔️𓆪༻⋆   ◅════ʅ▬  \\〰
You remained unconscious throughout the night, much to everyone else’s dismay. The doctors had hoped for a quick recovery from losing part of your life energy.
Therefore, with no good news come morning, the Avengers met in the boardroom, save for the Asgardian brothers. Thor was still admitted to the medical wing, while Loki had stayed on the floor for about as long as you had.
“Alrighty folks, it’s brainstorming time. How are we saving Y/N?” Tony asked, facing the whiteboard and holding a dry erase marker in his fingers.
The room was filled with a thick silence, before Vision spoke. “Well, given that the God of Mischief does seem to have some sort of interesting connection to Y/N, maybe if we have him transfer life energy to her? Or Thor? The problem is that none of us have excess life energy to give. They’re the only people that might.”
“Loki is not touching her.” Steve responded afterwards, hoping not to come across abrasive, but rather, stern and direct. The rest of the group turned to him, hoping for some kind of explanation to his unwavering opinion. “He has drained her life force every time they have come into contact. Any more of that could cause her to die instantly.”
The rest of the group nodded in understanding, finally realizing where the Captain was coming from.
“Okay, so we’re setting the boundary that Loki is not allowed to touch Y/N.” Tony confirmed, squiggling down a sentence on the whiteboard. He turned toward the center of the room, opting to address Friday.
“Friday, what can you remind us of regarding Y/N’s powers?”
“Y/N’s powers are sourced from a life reserve within her, caused by various experiments with synthetic drugs, which altered her biology. The life energy replenishes itself, but can become built up when she does not utilize her powers often enough. This can cause her to become feverish, lethargic, and potentially, dangerous earthquakes to occur from the energy release into the environment.” Friday started.
“Her powers can be used to heal or drain a life force from any being. Her daggers, specifically, can paralyze, drain life energy, or potentially kill their prey.”
“What happens if Y/N drains her life force entirely, Friday?”
“In theory, she’d die.”
“Is there anything we can do to heal her life force?” Steve interjected.
“The only case of Dagger being able to be healed by another was by her partner, Cloak.”
“And Cloak is dead.” The Captain sighed in frustration.
“But her new ‘partner’ isn’t.” Wanda thought of the dark haired god.
“That’s too dangerous. He’s not touching her.” Steve was quick to interrupt again. “Every single time he’s touched her, her life energy has been drained.”
“Except during practice today.” Tony spoke, tapping the marker against the air as if the solution had come to him. “Cap, they surged through the air with the power of a turbo jet. They created the energy together.”
“Which means, in theory, he could create that energy again.” Natasha spoke up.
“And bring her back.” Bruce was the next to add.
“He was holding her when we came down to the bay. If that theory was going to work, wouldn’t it have  already?” Steve retorted.
“Only one way to find out.” Tony spoke, making his way determinedly out of the boardroom.
Steve was quick to follow behind, exasperated and still rambling about how this tactic could easily end in disaster. In your death.
“Tony, I really think we need to think about this more.” He practically begged.
The rest of the Avengers trailed closely behind, following Stark to the medical wing and down its shorter hallways. The hallways could be lengthened in emergencies, but thankfully, it had been a while since that kind of occurrence.
He made a beeline to your room, where they had spotted a certain God of Mischief lying peacefully atop the sofa adjacent to your bed. It certainly didn’t fit him in the slightest, it was far too small both length and width wise, but he did look to be sleeping rather well despite that fact.
Steve’s stomach churned at the thought of Loki sleeping in there with you all night. He should’ve stayed. He should’ve been the one to be there for you. He shouldn’t have left you last night.
“Reindeer Games!” Tony barked, causing the god to jolt awake. “Yes?” The god hissed.
“We need you to work your magic on Y/N.”
“I thought we decided that-“ Loki went to question, with Stark’s response interrupting him.
“The rest of us decided otherwise.”
“Not me.” Cap piped up in opposition.
“Huh?”
“We talked to Friday, and-“
“So we’re using the logic of a robot?” The god interjected.
“Do not refer to her as such. We’re here to save Y/N.”
The god finally stood up from the sofa “what do you need from me?”
“Just, sprinkle a little of your magic powder on her, and we should be set to go.” Tony said simply.
“You can heal, right?” Wanda spoke suddenly. Loki nodded in response.
“Just, maybe do that. From afar, if you can.”
Loki nodded in understanding, a green orb began to emerge from his hand, as his fingers twittled and it rose up in the air. The seidr glittered and glistened, swirling with magnificent effort.
With a simple flick of his wrist, Loki floated the orb over to you, where it levitated above you for just a moment, before it dove down, absorbing into your chest.
Your body filled with color, which made the Avengers surrounding you brighten with hope, Loki looked ecstatic.
It was then that your pulse flatlined on the monitor.

Expect a rise in social safety nets, universal basic income initiatives, and policies aimed at closing the wealth gap. Environmental health is intrinsically linked to collective prosperity. We'll see a focus on sustainable practices, green economies, and resource sharing to ensure a thriving planet for generations to come. Communities will come together to address social challenges like poverty, homelessness, and healthcare disparities, recognizing that individual success is interwoven with collective well-being. Collaborative consumption, resource sharing, and community-owned assets will gain traction, challenging traditional notions of ownership and fostering a sense of shared abundance.
Examples of Collective Prosperity in Action

Optimizing Operations: The Role of MIS in Enhancing Employee Transportation Services
In today's competitive business environment, the efficiency of operations can significantly impact a company's success. One of the key areas where efficiency can be enhanced is in the management of Employee Transportation Services. With the help of Management Information Systems (MIS), companies can improve their Corporate Employee Transportation and streamline their Business Travel Solution. This article explores how integrating MIS can transform Employee Transportation Services, offering a seamless, efficient, and cost-effective approach for businesses.
The Importance of Employee Transportation Services
Employee Transportation Services are crucial for large corporations and businesses that prioritize the safety, punctuality, and well-being of their employees. Effective transportation services not only ensure that employees arrive at their workplace safely and on time but also boost morale and productivity by reducing travel-related stress.
Moreover, streamlined Employee Transportation Services can lead to significant cost savings by optimizing route planning and vehicle maintenance, reducing idle time, and improving fuel efficiency. These services are not just a logistical requirement but a strategic asset that can contribute significantly to operational efficiency.
Enhancing Corporate Employee Transportation with MIS
Corporate Employee Transportation involves complex logistics, requiring the coordination of multiple vehicles, drivers, and routes to meet the transportation needs of employees across various locations. MIS can play a crucial role in enhancing these services by providing comprehensive data analysis and real-time monitoring capabilities.
By integrating MIS, businesses can automate and optimize route planning based on traffic data and employee locations, leading to shorter travel times and reduced fuel consumption. MIS tools can also help in maintaining records of vehicle use, which is crucial for scheduling regular maintenance and avoiding breakdowns, thereby ensuring that the Corporate Employee Transportation system is reliable and efficient.
Business Travel Solution: Integrating MIS for Enhanced Management
For businesses requiring frequent travel, an effective Business Travel Solution is vital. This involves not just the daily commutes of employees but also their travel for business meetings, conferences, and other work-related trips. An MIS-enhanced Business Travel Solution can manage bookings, track expenses, and ensure compliance with corporate travel policies, all from a single platform.
Additionally, MIS can provide analytics on travel spending, highlighting opportunities to cut costs or invest more wisely. For example, data gathered by MIS can help companies negotiate better rates with travel service providers or decide when to book flights and accommodations for lower rates. This strategic approach to managing Business Travel Solution can lead to substantial savings and improved operational efficiency.
The Benefits of MIS in Employee Transportation and Business Travel
Efficiency in Operations: MIS provides tools to automate and optimize the scheduling and routing of Employee Transportation Services, saving time and resources.
Cost Reduction: By optimizing routes and managing travel bookings effectively, companies can significantly reduce costs associated with Corporate Employee Transportation and Business Travel Solution.
Enhanced Safety and Compliance: MIS helps monitor driver performance and vehicle conditions, ensuring that safety standards are met and that the company complies with transportation regulations.
Improved Employee Satisfaction: Efficient transportation services can lead to higher employee satisfaction, as employees appreciate reliable and stress-free commuting options.
Data-Driven Decisions: With the robust data analytics provided by MIS, companies can make informed decisions that enhance the effectiveness of their transportation services.
Conclusion
The integration of Management Information Systems in Employee Transportation Services offers numerous benefits, from improving the efficiency of Corporate Employee Transportation to optimizing the Business Travel Solution. By leveraging these advanced technological tools, businesses can not only enhance operational efficiency but also boost employee satisfaction and achieve significant cost savings. As businesses continue to grow and evolve, the role of MIS in managing and enhancing employee transportation services will become increasingly important, proving to be a critical component of modern corporate strategy.

Supreme Court poised to appoint federal judges to run the US economy.
January 18, 2024
ROBERT B. HUBBELL
JAN 17, 2024
The Supreme Court heard oral argument on two cases that provide the Court with the opportunity to overturn the “Chevron deference doctrine.” Based on comments from the Justices, it seems likely that the justices will overturn judicial precedent that has been settled for forty years. If they do, their decision will reshape the balance of power between the three branches of government by appointing federal judges as regulators of the world’s largest economy, supplanting the expertise of federal agencies (a.k.a. the “administrative state”).
Although the Chevron doctrine seems like an arcane area of the law, it strikes at the heart of the US economy. If the Court were to invalidate the doctrine, it would do so in service of the conservative billionaires who have bought and paid for four of the justices on the Court. The losers would be the American people, who rely on the expertise of federal regulators to protect their water, food, working conditions, financial systems, public markets, transportation, product safety, health care services, and more.
The potential overruling of the Chevron doctrine is a proxy for a broader effort by the reactionary majority to pare the power of the executive branch and Congress while empowering the courts. Let’s take a moment to examine the context of that effort.
But I will not bury the lead (or the lede): The reactionary majority on the Court is out of control. In disregarding precedent that conflicts with the conservative legal agenda of its Federalist Society overlords, the Court is acting in a lawless manner. It is squandering hard-earned legitimacy. It is time to expand the Court—the only solution that requires a simple majority in two chambers of Congress and the signature of the president.
The “administrative state” sounds bad. Is it?
No. The administrative state is good. It refers to the collective body of federal employees, regulators, and experts who help maintain an orderly US economy. Conservatives use the term “administrative state” to denigrate federal regulation and expertise. They want corporations to operate free of all federal restraint—free to pollute, free to defraud, free to impose dangerous and unfair working conditions, free to release dangerous products into the marketplace, and free to engage in deceptive practices in public markets.
The US economy is the largest, most robust economy in the world because federal regulators impose standards for safety, honesty, transparency, and accountability. Not only is the US economy the largest in the world (as measured by nominal GDP), but its GDP per capita ($76,398) overshadows that of the second largest economy, China ($12,270). The US dollar is the reserve currency for the world and its markets are a haven for foreign investment and capital formation. See The Top 25 Economies in the World (investopedia.com)
US consumers, banks, investment firms, and foreign investors are attracted to the US economy because it is regulated. US corporations want all the benefits of regulations—until regulations get in the way of making more money. It is at that point that the “administrative state” is seen as “the enemy” by conservatives who value profit maximization above human health, safety, and solvency.
It is difficult to comprehend how big the US economy is. To paraphrase Douglas Adams’s quote about space, “It’s big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is.” Suffice to say, the US economy is so big it cannot be regulated by several hundred federal judges with dockets filled with criminal cases and major business disputes.
Nor can Congress pass enough legislation to keep pace with ever changing technological and financial developments. Congress can’t pass a budget on time; the notion that it would be able to keep up with regulations necessary to regulate Bitcoin trading in public markets is risible.
What is the Chevron deference doctrine?
Managing the US economy requires hundreds of thousands of subject matter experts—a.k.a. “regulators”—who bring order, transparency, and honesty to the US economy. Those experts must make millions of judgments each year in creating, implementing and applying federal regulations.
And this is where the “Chevron deference doctrine” comes in. When federal experts and regulators interpret federal regulations in esoteric areas such as maintaining healthy fisheries, their decisions should be entitled to a certain amount of deference. And they have received such deference since 1984, when the US Supreme Court created a rule of judicial deference to decisions by federal regulators in the case of Chevron v. NRDC.
What happened at oral argument?
In a pair of cases, the US Supreme Court heard argument on Tuesday as to whether the Chevron deference doctrine should continue—or whether the Court should overturn the doctrine and effectively throw out 17,000 federal court decisions applying the doctrine. According to Court observers, including Mark Joseph Stern of Slate, the answer is “Yes, the Court is poised to appoint federal judges as regulators of the US economy.” See Mark Joseph Stern in Slate, The Supreme Court is seizing more power from Democratic presidents. (slate.com)
I recommend Stern’s article for a description of the grim atmosphere at the oral argument—kind of “pre-demise” wake for the Chevron deference doctrine. Stern does a superb job of explaining the effects of overruling Chevron:
Here’s the bottom line: Without Chevron deference, it’ll be open season on each and every regulation, with underinformed courts playing pretend scientist, economist, and policymaker all at once. Securities fraud, banking secrecy, mercury pollution, asylum applications, health care funding, plus all manner of civil rights laws: They are ultravulnerable to judicial attack in Chevron’s absence. That’s why the medical establishment has lined up in support of Chevron, explaining that its demise would mark a “tremendous disruption” for patients and providers; just rinse and repeat for every other area of law to see the convulsive disruptions on the horizon.
The Kochs and the Federalist Society have bought and paid for this sad outcome. The chaos that will follow will hurt consumers, travelers, investors, patients and—ultimately—American businesses, who will no longer be able to rely on federal regulators for guidance as to the meaning of federal regulations. Instead, businesses will get an answer to their questions after lengthy, expensive litigation before overworked and ill-prepared judges implement a political agenda.
Expand the Court. Disband the reactionary majority by relegating it to an irrelevant minority. If we win control of both chambers of Congress in 2024 and reelect Joe Biden, expanding the Court should be the first order of business.

Oh my. This whole ongoing mess really is crap hilarious.
The ruling is the latest twist in a battle between Tesla and labour groups in Sweden. Union IF Metall put mechanics on strike on Oct. 27, refusing to service Tesla's cars because the company would not accept collective bargaining.
Members of other unions, including dockworkers, electricians and cleaners have since taken action in sympathy.
Tesla has a policy of not signing collective bargaining agreements and says its employees have as good, or better, terms than those demanded by IF Metall. The union says it is vital to the Swedish labour market model that all companies have collective agreements...
Seko, the union that organised the PostNord workers, told Reuters an easy solution for Tesla was to sign the collective bargaining agreement with IF Metall.
So yeah, the agency issuing the licence plates needs to find some way of getting them to Tesla, without any obligation on anyone else to actually deliver them.
It also sounds remarkably like someone at the Transport Agency was being purposely obstructive there too, beyond normal-level dealing with bureaucracies. They also probably did NOT particularly want to piss off the postal workers in question, by trying to circumvent their existing shipping contract while said postal workers were refusing to deliver to Tesla.
A little more background:
So yeah, good luck getting anything done when basically every other industry is refusing to deal with your business, or even deliver its mail. You would think that whoever was actually making certain decisions at Tesla would have learned from the similar Toys 'R' Us debacle in the mid-'90s.
My guess is that they were at least hoping that nearly 30 more years of neoliberal influence might have weakened organized labor enough for them to get away with pulling this shit now. Either that, or 'just' contravening the Being Bloody Stupid Act of 1581. And then freaking Elon did an Elon, and responded to any criticism by doubling down on some terrible choices.
I can only hope that, if this was the line of thinking? That someone was sorely mistaken, and severely underestimated how well the whole Nordic Model has managed to hold up.

All It Takes Is One: How an Injury on the Job Spurred Organizing Efforts at FedEx
Tumblr media
by Natascha Elena Uhlmann
FedEx workers had enough of impossible workloads and understaffing — so they organized.
Injured on the job
Jeremiah Davila, a retail employee (known internally as a store consultant) at FedEx Office, tried to reason with management about unreasonable workloads and understaffing. He saw co-workers transfer and quit and knew that the vacancies wouldn’t be filled unless pay and working conditions improved. Though some might imagine FedEx office as a laid-back work environment, the work is specialized and taxing: workers unload, package, and transport heavy parcels while balancing additional retail and production duties. For Jeremiah, the breaking point came when he was injured on the job — and management, he says, was nonchalant. Done with waiting on empty promises, he took to organizing.
“I had been warning them for a while [about] these working conditions … [saying] we can’t keep working like this. If someone calls in sick, you can push yourself a little for a day, but you can’t keep going like that for a month,” he notes. “So I’d been warning them for a while, and they just were kind of like, ‘Yeah, yeah, we’ll take care of you,’ was the response, but nothing ever got done. Just a lot of empty promises … When I told them about the injury, they just seemed more skeptical than anything else.”
Unsustainable workloads
He wasn’t alone. Jeremiah’s co-worker, Genesis, had also seen the company promise to improve working conditions then fail to deliver. At their flagship store — one of the busiest in the district — workers juggled packing, shipping, printing, laminating, and retail duties, with critically low levels of staffing. Over time, their team of four dwindled to two, with no new hires in sight. Instead, management turned to a band-aid solution:
“As far as I can tell, our entire district is short-staffed. They like to play this game where they bounce people round from store to store, to cover the short staffing. But the reality is they have a store that’s really understaffed and then they pull people from a marginally less understaffed store. What the reality is, whatever the magic number is for the district … no matter how much you’re bouncing them around they’re all doing the work of more than one person,” says Jeremiah.
“We did a little digging to find out about the managerial compensation. I don’t know the exact numbers, but as far as the store manager on up, if there is a budgetary surplus, they do receive a bonus, a percentage of it. Not illegal, but obviously very unethical and a clear motivator, borderline conflict of interest,” he adds.
Learning the ropes
Jeremiah and Genesis had never participated in workplace actions, but they learned as they went. They went out on strike, demanding an end to understaffing, compensation for the specialized nature of their work, and safe workloads — so no one is injured again. “It’s been very bootstraps guerilla from the start, but that’s kind of our style,” says Jeremiah. After a supervisor allegedly made social media comments stating workers would be retaliated against for their organizing, they filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Management was quick to respond.
“Once we filed those charges, there was a huge change in the communication with management — massive change. A lot more toned down, respectful, actually taking seriously what we were saying about our boundaries, about, ‘Hey, we’re trying to negotiate here, collective bargaining, yeah, we’re not a recognized union, but we still have protection to collectively bargain nonetheless,’” says Jeremiah.
When we fight, we win
Taking action with your co-workers can be nerve wracking, but Genesis and Jeremiah looked to other worker victories for resolve. “Genesis and I were on the fence were on striking. We were actually talking about the UPS strike, and I was like, if they did it, anyone can do it … If they hadn’t done that, I don’t think we would have followed through with what we’re doing,” he says.
Fortunately, they’re not alone. Workers across the country have seen historic raises and improvements to working conditions at UPS, Ford, GM, and Stellantis — all of which were won by workers being prepared to fight for each other. If you’re curious about organizing your own workplace, Jeremiah has advice: “The NLRB is a great starting point, they have all the forms. But it’s really confusing, and I’m not gonna lie, I had to have a few tries to get my stuff right. So an organization like EWOC is what I would also recommend — where people have been through the process and they can help you if you have questions … people who have done it before are gonna be the best people who can help.”
