#emotional reactions to art

i had so many thoughts about they/them (2022) and i really think i on't ever stop talking about this movie – not because it's particularly great, just because it is So Much (when i watched it with a friend we were taking breaks very very frequently) and i decided to write a paper about it!! before you read the paper, read this first:

i wrote this paper because i think people are misunderstanding this movie.

overall i do not think i recommend this movie as a horror movie because i do think you need to be informed that this movie has some pretty grisly elements (animal death, electroshock, some other psychological stuff) that you should definitely approach with caution but if you are looking for a deep emotional reaction this might be the place to find it? of course, its not going to be everyone's thing.

i think there are conversations and critiques that can only take place after you have seen this movie – the actual traditional horror plot is shoddy, and should be talked about as well because it is definitely not without flaw, but it is not the source of the horror in this movie

frankly, the body paragraphs in my paper could easily be expanded into their own papers, and i definitely shoehorned my thoughts about this movie a little – BUT, i strongly stand with everything i said.

Another detail I really like was how shamura got a heart for each sibling, and in the second to last kallamar, leshy, and heket has a heart for them. And in the last you think there's no heart, but then you see there are 2 small hearts on narinder feet

Narinder is totally the kind of mfer to get really close to showing genuine remorse for his actions + grief for what he lost, but hides it as best he can so he doesn't seem weak (despite the signs being visible). Shamura is the type of mfer that loves something they lost so much that it distracts them from the few people that still love them to hell and back. I am the type of mfer to draw this sequel for you that COMPLETELY ruins the vibe of the last comic:

something that really made me stop and interrogate my inherent knee jerk emotional reaction against ai art was asking myself if there really is a meaningful difference between someone cutting up images and pasting them together to make a collage without citing sources or getting permission for every image they used in the collage, and an ai generating a new image using models trained on existing images without citing courses or getting permission for every image used in the new image - if that's even possible, which i'm coming to understand isn't how the technology even works. like if your fundamental argument against ai is because it doesn't cite sources or ask for permission and change someone's art without their consent, there are a lot of non-ai art forms that involve that, and they've existed for a lot longer than ai has. when faced with this i don't think the answer is "well everyone who has ever made a collage or remixed a song is doing evil plagiarism too" so that leaves us at having to abandon this specific argument against ai for the same reasons.

and we have to ask ourselves, if we were to go after everyone who ever remixed a song or made a collage without permission, who would that benefit exactly? because the average person couldn't afford to sue someone for using their photo in a collage without consent, only corporations could. much like how copyright law has made music companies a tonne of money and serves to protect their interests, i don't think expanding copyright law is the answer here. which is why i don't think arguments against ai that focus on intellectual property are actually helpful, the problem isn't inherent to the technology but rather the economic system we live in.
