EuroTrip | Part 24 | Magnificent Muñoz
#FM24 #EuroTrip Part 24: Magnificent Muñoz. Star attacker David Muñoz leads @Molde_FK to a totally dominant season in Norway's @eliteserien, as The Ecuadorian smashes new club records all over the place! Read here:
Trebor Mahtal continued his unexpected European success by leading Molde FK to an unlikely Europa Conference League success in 2043. However, the Norwegian title remained elusive, leading him to stay in the Scandinavian nation for a third season. Mahtal had done a great job financially at Molde, but the club decided to do their bit to threaten his efforts by building a new stadium. The…

Hetalia Human Names
NOTE: This is my personal interpretation and the names may diverge from canon and established fanon. Also I might update this every so often to make it more accurate, depending on the information I find.
Table of Contents
The Main Characters
Western Europe
Northern Europe
Eastern Europe
Southern Europe
Western Asia
South Asia
East Asia
Southeast Asia
Oceania
Micronations
Former nations
The Main Characters
Italy Veneziano: Feliciano Vergano
I chose the name Vergano instead as it keeps the essense of the original surname, but is actually Italian.
Italy Romano: Lovino Vergano
Germany: Ludwig Beilschmidt
Japan: Kiku Honda
Prussia: Gilbert Beilschmidt
America: Alfred Franklin Jones
I like the headcanon of his middle name being "Freedom", but Franklin is my personal favourite.
England: Arthur James Kirkland
I came across this in a fic a while back and never looked back. This man needs a middle name.
France: Francis Bonnefoy
Russia: Ivan Braginsky
China: Yao Wang
Canada: Matthew Williams
Western Europe
Austria: Roderich Edelstein
Belgium: Laura Janssens
Liechtenstein: Erika Vogel
Luxembourg: Henri Janssens
I've also used the name Gabriel before, but it doesn't seem to be used much in Luxembourg, so Henri would be more fitting.
Monaco: Louise Bonnefoy
The name Louise and it's masculine variant, Louis, appear a few times in the Monaguesque royal family.
Netherlands: Willem Janssens
Willem appears a few times in the Dutch royal family, and it sounds a bit older than other suggested names, which reflects his age and general vibes imo. I really like this name.
Switzerland: Sebastian Zwingli
Personally I see his name "Basch" as a nickname for Sebastian. It's also easy to adapt to his official languages: Sebastian/Sébastién/Sebastiano. The Romansh variant would be Bistgaun, but the archaic version seems to be Bastgaun, which is more similar to Basch. I headcanon that he goes by the name "Basch" in all languages to make it more cohesive.
Northern Europe
Denmark: Mathias Rasmussen
I'm from Scandinavia myself and I don't know if it's widespread, but I've heard people say "all Danish people are named Rasmus" more than once, so I like to incorporate that into his surname.
Estonia: Eduard Kaasik
Around 50% of Estonia is covered in forest, and one of the most common tree types is birch. Kaasik is a common surname and means "birch forest".
Finland: Timo Väinämöinen
Iceland: Eiríkur Steinsson
Steinsson means "son of Stein (given name meaning stone)",. Also Emil isn't traditionally Icelandic, but it's widely used. Personally though, I prefer the name Eiríkur.
Latvia: Raivis Bērziņš
The surname Galante corresponds with the modern Latvian opera singer Inese Galante, but I couldn't find anything to suggest it's commonly used or that it's Latvian at all. Bērziņš is one of the most used Latvian surnames and means "birch tree", like Estonia's surname. Personally, I don't see the Baltics as siblings, but I think this would be a cute reference.
Also, based on what I read, surnames became common in Latvia around the 19th century, with Bērziņš being one of them. Latvia could have picked up whatever the people around him (Estonia) was using and made it his own.
Lithuania: Tolys Laurinaitis
Norway: Sigurd Bondevik
Sweden: Berwald Oxenstierna
Eastern Europe
Belarus: Natalya Arlovskaya
Bulgaria: Mihail Petrov Isporov
Isporov is the family name and is derived from an alternative name of Asparukh, the first king of the First Bulgarian Empire.
Czech: Tereza Novakova
Hungary: Erzsébet Héderváry
Moldova: Marcel Popescu
Poland: Feliks Łukasiewicz
Romania: Vladislav Popescu
Slovakia: Jozef Novak
Ukraine: Iryna Chernenko
Southern Europe
Greece: Herakles Karpusi
Portugal: João Silva Ferreira
Spain: Antonio Fernandez Carriedo
Western Asia
Cyprus: Stasinos Karpusi
Stasinos was one of the first European poets who wrote the epic poem Cypria.
Turkey: Sadiq Adnan
TRNC: Tarkan Adnan
South Asia
India: Rajesh Thakur
East Asia
Hong Kong: Leon Wang / Wong Kulung
Macau: Chen Wang
South Korea: Im Yong-soo
Taiwan: Mei Lin
Southeast Asia
Thailand: Prasert Chakri
Vietnam: Lien Nguyen
Africa
Cameroon: Emmanuel Mawdo Ahidjo
Many of the most commonly used forenames in Cameroon are of French or English origins, such as Emmanuel.
Mawdo means ‘elder’ in Fulfulde.
Ahidjo refers to the first president of Cameroon.
Egypt: Gupta Muhammad Hassan
Seychelles: Michelle Mancham
Americas
Cuba: Carlos Machado Rodríguez
Oceania
Australia: Daniel Kirkland
New Zealand: Zachary Kirkland
Micronations
Hutt River: Christopher Kirkland
Kugelmugel: Leopold Edelstein
Ladonia: Erland Oxenstierna
Molossia: Jacob Jones
"JJ" :)
Sealand: Peter Kirkland
Seborga: Romeo Vergano
Okay listen. I have no explaination, I just really like this name. Also, if the names of the trio is Peter, Wendy, and Romeo, they're all named after characters from literature. I think that's fun.
Wy: Wendy Kirkland
Former Nations
Ancient Egypt: Neferure
References the only biological child of Hatshepsut.
Ancient Greece: Helene
Ancient Rome: Marcus Valerius Maximus
Marcus is the praenomina (given name) and refers to how Romulus and Remus were said to have been twins of Mars, the god.
Valerius is the nomen gentilicium (hereditary name) and means “to be strong”.
Maximus is the cognomen and means “the greatest”.
Germania: Alaric
Holy Roman Empire: Otto Beilschmidt
Personally I like the idea that HRE and Germany aren't the same person, but share the same body.

SS camp counselor slasher film au
The boys are hired to be camp counselors but they don’t realize this summer is going to be the most eventful summer of their lives. Cue cheesy camp slasher film tropes.
Patton Lovett: Patton is the camp counselor that is way too happy to be there. He makes sure everyone is okay and everyone participates. He’s chipper and all around a very nice guy. Basically your good fun dad away from home. However when things go south he’s absolutely lost. He’s scared, confused and most of all he’s worried about all the campers. He thinks he can save them all (unfortunately).
Logan Martin: He’s only here for credits in school (college). He makes sure everything is on track, everyone is accounted for, everyone is following the rules. He also makes sure to make sure there’s some form of educational activity. He’s a bit awkward with the campers but he does have his fans. When things go south Logan is thrown off his game for only a little bit before he goes into crisis control mode. He takes every step possible to save whoever he can, and to prevent as much disaster as he can.
Roman Princeton: He’s probably the most liked camp counselor. He’s in Charge of all creative activities and has a hand in some of the physical activities. He’s the one that leads everyone during campfire gatherings with songs. When things go south he springs into action, taking the role of hero and he would lay his life down for his friends and these kids. However he soon has to be reigned back because you cannot save everyone in this scenario.
Virgil Petrov: He’s not the most favorite camp counselor because on the outside, he’s an intimidating and quite bad boy. Really he’s just not wanting to socialize much. However he is a good camp counselor, entertaining the campers with spooky ghost stories, taking them aside when they want to be alone and sneaking some of the loneliest kids snacks. When things go south he panics. Fight or flight kicks in and he becomes a fierce protector of these campers and he is fast, can easily slip into tight spaces and he can hide himself and others quite well. He’s the ultimate survivor in a sense.
Janus Lokir: He’s only here because he has to. Why? He won’t say. He just has to. He’s one of the least liked councilors. He doesn’t really like children, he carries a flask with some weird smelling grape juice on him everywhere he goes and he lies. Like, a lot. Plus things have gone missing around the camp and Janus swears he hasn’t seen them. Odd. However he could be leagues worse. He actually knows how to care for children in some capacity which is much more than another councilor. And yes he may be a bit…bitchy he isn’t a monster. When things go south he’s suspect number two, or at least expected to betray everyone. And he did think about it, but unfortunately he ended up hiding in a cabin with a small flock of children who all wet themselves, so he thinks as useless as these children are he can’t exactly abandon them. He isn’t a monster after all. It won’t stop him from sipping his “juice” though.
Remus Princeton: No one knows why the Camp allowed Remus to be there. Some say it’s because Roman works there. Others say it’s because he has to do community service for legal reasons. Either way, he’s the least liked councilor there. He once bit a rabid raccoon and somehow didn’t get sick. He regularly eats from the garbage cans and carries sharp pointy knives on him. One camper even saw Remus start a fire on the lake! Needless to say he is suspect number one. So imagine everyone’s surprise when Remus is not the killer when things go south. While everyone is panicking, Remus is having the time of his life. And wait…where did the chainsaw go?
EXTRAS
Dr. Emile Picani: He’s the camp’s resident doctor and therapist (since the camp was too cheap to hire one of each). Picani knows above basic first aid and helps the campers that need it mentally. He’s known to be a beloved member of the camp by staff and campers alike. However as much as he likes this stint, he’s deciding to quit after this year. Why? Because defending himself and others from a Killer was not part of the job description. He’s barricaded himself in his medical cabin and has wounded and panicked people in his care. He can take care of them for the moment but for how long?
Remy Santos: He was hired as a custodian. Quite frankly, he hates it. But he needs the money. He doesn’t like doing his job and will often be found taking naps around camp. He’ll even fake an illness just to stay in the medical cabin with his BFF Emile. However when things went south, he wants nothing more than to take a nap. But he can’t. And unfortunately his job is more important than he realized. As the custodian he knows where certain things are and he has the keys to all the buildings on the campsite, especially to the maintenance shed, where he could get parts to get the emergency radio in the Medical cabin going. So downing possibly his last coffee he heads out there, totally alone. He should have just picked up that job at Starbucks.

Bulgarian President Roumen Radev has signed the decree making personnel changes to the Cabinet of caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, less than two weeks after the caretaker government took office.
In a short statement on April 22, the president’s media office said that Radev issued the decree based on the requests made by Glavchev.
Glavchev will assume the foreign affairs portfolio in addition to his duties as caretaker Prime Minister, replacing Stefan Dimitrov, and Georgi Takhov will be the new agriculture minister in place of Kiril Vatev.
After Glavchev’s initial nominee to take over as Foreign Minister, GERB deputy leader Daniel Mitov, withdrew before the weekend, the caretaker Prime Minister nominated himself for the job.
Radev, who had described the proposal as “avant-garde” at the weekend, was due to meet with Glavchev on April 22 to discuss the proposed changes to the caretaker Cabinet’s line-up.
However, the meeting did not take place, with media reports saying that Glavchev decided against it. Instead, the caretaker PM made a formal request to be appointed caretaker Foreign Minister.
This is the latest in a number of changes executed by the caretaker government.
Its first act after taking office on April 9 was to request President Roumen Radev to decree the dismissal of Zhivko Kotsev from the post of Interior Ministry chief secretary. Radev signed the decree the following day.
On April 17, prosecutors charged Kotsev with alleged participation in an organised crime group along with former Customs Agency head Petya Bankova and business people Stefan and Martin Dimitrov.
Bankova, also earlier dismissed by the caretaker government, faces an additional charge of coercion. All the accused deny wrongdoing, and critics have claimed that the steps against them are politically-motivated.
National Revenue Agency deputy head Georgi Dimov was appointed to head the Customs Agency.
The first changes to deputy ministers came on April 10 when Glavchev appointed Metodi Metodiev, Stefan Belchev and Martin Danovski as deputy ministers of finance.
On April 10, caretaker Regional Development and Public Works Minister Violeta Koritarova fired Yassen Yordanov as head of the Road Infrastructure Agency after an internal audit found allegedly illegal actions.
April 11 saw the caretaker government dismiss Petar Petrov as deputy head of the State Agency for National Security. Petrov had been appointed to the post in July 2023 in the first month in office of the Nikolai Denkov government.
On April 12, Spaska Kincheva was appointed deputy minister of justice, while Emil Dechev and Yuliya Kovacheva were dismissed from their deputy ministerial posts at the ministry.
The same day, Stoyan Temelakiev and Tony Todorov were appointed to replace Kiril Tsenkin and Ivelina Dundakova as deputy interior ministers.
Also on April 12, Tihomir Stoychev and Elena Shekerletova were dismissed as deputy ministers of foreign affairs. Maria Angelieva and Colonel Nevyana Miteva, a former vice presidential candidate on the GERB ticket that was headed by Atanas Gerdzhikov in Bulgaria’s 2021 presidential elections, were appointed to replace them.
April 12 also saw Koritarova fire Delyana Panayotova as acting head of the National Construction Control Directorate, replacing her with Lilyana Petrova. Panayotova became acting head of the directorate in August 2022, replacing Petrova, who had held the post from December 31 2021.
On April 16, Glavchev dismissed Vladya Borissova as head of the Patent Office. Borissova had held the post since June 2021, when she was appointed by the Stefan Yanev caretaker government. Olya Dimitrova was named as her replacement.
The same day, David Sukalinski was appointed deputy minister of economy and industry and Ivan Kapitanov as deputy minister of agriculture and food. Alexander Yotsev and Georgi Toshev, respective holders of those posts, were dismissed.
On April 17, it was announced that Denitsa Zlateva had resigned as chief executive of Bulgargaz. The Bulgarian Energy Holding appointed Vesselin Sinabov in her place. In 2017, Zlateva was caretaker deputy prime minister in the Ognyan Gerdzhikov interim administration and is a former Bulgarian Socialist Party MP. She was appointed Bulgargaz chief executive in August 2022.
Dimitar Spassov and Tatyana Petrova-Boyadzhieva were dismissed from Bulgargaz’s board, and Mihail Milkov, Byanka Racheva and Marin Filipovski appointed to it.
On April 19, the caretaker government appointed Maria Neikova as district governor of Bourgas, dismissing Plamen Yanev from the post. Neikov has held the post twice before, from May 2021 to January 2022 and from August 2022 to July 2023, both times as the appointee of caretaker governments. Yanev was appointed by the Denkov government in July 2023.
Also on April 19, Martin Gikov was dismissed as deputy minister of innovation and growth, Nikolai Sidzhimov as deputy minister of environment and water, Nikolai Naydenov and Ginka Mashova as deputy ministers of labour and social policy, Viktor Stoyanov as deputy culture minister and Marieta Georgieva as deputy minister of education and science.
That day, six deputy ministers were appointed: Boiko Penkov and Dobromira Kareva as deputy ministers of health, Ilko Ganev deputy minister of culture, Pavlin Petrov deputy minister of tourism, Viktor Atanasov deputy minister of environment and water and Georgi Samandov as deputy minister of energy.
And on April 22, Finance Minister Lyudmila Petkova appointed Georgi Yordanov as the director of the Public Financial Inspection Agency. Yordanov, who was chief of staff to former GERB Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov between 2014 and 2020, replaced Ilka Dimova, who had been in office since February.

things that would be hard to justify if this was still vorkosigan saga fanfic that i get to amuse myself with:
helen definitely actually fucked all of her sex ed teachers on gnilles, while sasha only fucked the woman. when sasha finds out he's like YOU'RE LITERALLY NOT EVEN ATTRACTED TO WOMEN THOUGH? and helen is like. well it would be a waste not to make sure
sasha has been out-gayed by his straight sister. devastating
after helen and sasha gave up on fooling around with each other (years earlier, mere seconds into the attempt to kiss) helen was like. well. okay yakov do you want to make out and yakov was like DO I
arguably they lost their virginity together but they were also like 12 and both agree that educational fooling around with sort-of-your-cousin does not actually count (this is one of very few things helen agrees with yakov on in general)
helen's father does NOT die while sasha is pulling his little mercenary con, as he is safely back on kavagor, fretting himself into the ground about how helen is doing on her First Bodyguard Mission
after jaz pulls maksim into the closer social circle and maksim and yakov spend more time together they do actually have sex, mostly because despite all his shit-talking yakov trusts maksim will not actually be shitty about yakov being straight
except yakov is not straight, he's bi, but also kavagor is a binarist society and yakov is not attracted to men. he does still have sex with maksim at least one more time because there are so few people a kavagoran man can ask to fuck them in the ass, platonically
lady sveta, yakov's mother, officially hands off the duty of finding a bride for yakov to maksim
no one ever explicitly tells lady sveta that her son finds bottoming in anal sex such an essential part of his long-term sexual satisfaction that it's a deal-breaker to not do it, but maksim and yakov are uncomfortably sure she knows that's the connecting line between all of maksim's matches for yakov
maksim's longest-term relationship ends up being his relatively-frequent guest appearances in sasha and jaz's bed
delara jokes that maksim is trying to get the entire generation of petrov kids, and maksim is like....sasha and yakov are both only children? so did i not already do that?
she's like no, i meant our other son. you know, the emperor we fostered? although i guess i should also include helen in that case?
and maksim is like WELL I WOULD RATHER SHOOT MY SHOT WITH THE LITERAL EMPEROR THAN WITH HELEN THANKS
this is also how he finds out delara petrov knows he had sex with his cousin yakov. like sure, it's not hard to notice when he stays the night in sasha and jaz's room, but who tf is telling people about him and yakov? not him! not yakov!!!
i think the absolute funniest time for yakov's entire sexuality crisis, search for a wife, and marriage to a friend the entire world has always known as a man would be "while nikolai is off at Clone Rehab" so nikolai comes back and is like what the FUCK happened here
so much of his intel was wrong. like. so much of it.
yakov definitely forgot nikolai even existed while he was at clone rehab. you can't just give him a brand-new cousin after twenty-seven years and expect him to remember that!!!
delara takes maksim aside and is like okay you're a grown-up and he's technically a grown-up but i do want you to think really hard about whether or not you need to fuck my youngest son
maksim is like I AM NOT ACTUALLY ON THIS QUEST YOU MADE UP AUNT DELARA
the fact that he has also had sex with the emperor by this point is IMMATERIAL, he's not doing it on purpose, he's not having sex with helen, and he's not having sex with nikolai, STOP LAUGHING
at some point helen is like, it feels like it would have been funnier to fuck you before nikolai showed up. now it would feel like pandering
maksim is like i don't know why it's MY family that has a reputation for being impossible assholes, petrovs are the WORST
yakov's wife is Not Afraid of emil petrov. in fact emil petrov was daniil's woobie. or poor little meow meow maybe? because emil petrov is arguably a war criminal. he was also an infamously sad wet beast in his 20s. daniil is like you are so inspiring. emil is like??? you didn't even join the military though? and daniil is like no but every time i got dumped i thought of how you carried on after your first wife and then your awful boyfriend and i was like. okay daniil you can do this
daniil got most of a pharmacology degree and because of being closeted before marrying yakov was home-brewing hormones on technically illegitimate lab time obtained by means of favoring the nobility
when yakov is like but how did you get the blood work done without a doctor's order, daniil is like. hey remind me what kind of crimes you're duty-bound to report to a superior officer again and yakov is like WELL LET'S JUST SHELVE THAT CONVERSATION UNTIL WE'RE MARRIED AND I DON'T HAVE TO TESTIFY AGAINST YOU
jaz immediately approves of daniil and daniil gets "gendering jaz" privileges, which literally no one else on the planet has
because daniil only uses it to be like "girls' night!" or "excuse me, we need to have a man-to-man conversation" when they are both in gowns
ani the second half of this list appears to be about your OCs and not about the vorkosigan shit you stole at all?
yes. because i'm having fun. thank you.

Who could've known the secret to getting Rose to pay attention and commit to her training was dangling a tall handsome Russian man in front of her as an incentive like a carrot on a stick
Rose knows what she wants and I respect that lol. My headcanon is that Alberta, Stan, Yuri, Celeste, Emil, and all the other guardians knew there was something going on between Rose and Dimitri (because they weren’t all that subtle about it really) but just decided to let it slide because none of them wanted to deal with Rose themselves. They’re like “if this is the only way we can get Rose to graduate, then so be it. Good luck to Belikov, he’ll need it”

Arevin family background
So changing some of the things about the set-up for Jaz and Sasha to meet necessarily meant changing some things about the backstory I stole from the Vorkosigan Saga. One of the decisions I made early on was that I didn't want Helen (Elena, if you couldn't guess) to be a romantic interest for Sasha at all, and to have her own things going on. I also thought, if Sasha and Helen are several years older and Sasha has gone through the entire Academy before getting drummed out, it really would be silly for Sergeant Arevin to come with them. So he's actually at home, fretting about Baby Girl's First Big Bodyguard Job Solo, safe and sound.
And I mean, since I'm not starting with Delara and Emil's courtship, and Arevin is just like. Taken for granted in the household in order to keep some plot elements equivalent (which simply makes rewriting the civil war bits of The Warrior's Apprentice easier for me, lol) there was no reason I needed to keep some of the more problematic elements of his/Helen's backstory the same.
So rather than the product of rape, Helen is simply adopted. This is not to say Sergeant Yuri Arevin didn't rape people, but he didn't do it without Boris Kasharik pushing him into it and setting it up. (I also think it is just wildly unrealistic that an adult soldier capable of getting pregnant would not be using birth control. Like I guess based on the pregnancy fetish thing they could have removed implants or whatever, but like. Come on. That's harder to cover up.)
Anyway, rather than the product of rape that Arevin feels ~responsible~ for, Helen was simply born at the same brothel Arevin was born at, to a woman Arevin had definitely hired in the past, and who didn't make it through Helen's birth or infancy. The Petrovs were at the time already pregnant, and Arevin was specifically looking for something to help ground him and maybe deal with his trauma a little bit without, like, going to therapy (which on Kavagor at this time would have been...difficult to find). A baby needed adoption from what is essentially his family, and he would have the example of the two people he trusted the most in the world to follow as far as parenting went, and if he had to take care of a child he wouldn't be able to space out and lose time so much. So he adopts Helen without bothering to check if she is biologically related to him, because it's plausible and the brothel can't really afford to have that young a child hanging around.
When Helen is a child, people are like "IDK if she's related to you man she's pretty good-looking and you're. not." but as she hits puberty and becomes A Big Girl it seems more likely she is, in fact, Arevin's daughter. He literally never bothers to check, because he figures she's his daughter either way, and neither does Helen, for the same reason. What's the alternative, finding out she has a biological father who visited a brothel ten months before she was born and almost certainly was not expecting a baby to result from it? What good does that do her? If she was very lucky, this would be a man who wasn't shitty, but like. The odds of just gaining some controlling adult Kavagoran who feels entitled to boss her around are too high.
Arevin is also either less of a traditionalist butthead than Bothari, or Helen is more stubborn than Elena. This is probably helped by the fact that Helen does get Large, so when she's like "yeah I'm gonna be an armsman and bodyguard like my papa" he doesn't go "Aww sweetie, girls don't do that," he goes. Well let's see if you like it.
This is also a practical decision, since by this point she and Sasha are as close as siblings but she is much more physically capable than he is, and having someone his age to ride herd on him that is both willing and able to like. Pick him up and carry him away from bad decisions sounds great. That also leaves Sergeant Arevin more free to do his duties for Emil and the household, rather than babysitting the kids all the time.
So by the time Helen and Sasha meet Jaz on the Stolas, Helen is Sasha's full-time bodyguard and sworn in as a man-at-arms. They had to fight with the tailor to get her official livery, but she has it. They got around how annoyed the Baron was by having her sworn to Sasha directly, so she isn't a House armsman, she's Sasha's personal guard.
Helen does take liberties and talk to Sasha in a manner her father would never address Emil or Delara--or tbh even Sasha, once he's an adult--but she also has a strong handle on Work Mode and being properly formal when it's necessary. Which does sometimes surprise people when they don't know she and Sasha grew up together and they overhear them when they're off-duty, and Helen is like "You little shit, you promised to warn me," because like. Yeah that's her boss and her liege lord but he is also effectively her little brother.
Yuri Arevin is very much still inclined to cling to traditional rules, because they at least provide a framework through which to understand the world, but raising a GNC daughter alongside Obviously Bisexual Sasha (with his co-parents being Openly Bisexual Nobleman and Pansexual Gnillesian Scientist) means that he's less aggressively tightly wound up about some things. He is honestly much more upset that Helen comes home with a deserter boyfriend than that Sasha brought home Jaz, especially since Jaz quickly proves ze can fight and Delara loves zem. Helen has to be like "HEY. I didn't ask you. Fuck off." while Dimitri is like. Trying not to piss his pants.
(Jaz and Sasha both vouching for Dimitri probably helps also. Arevin never really Gets Dimitri, or why Helen likes him, but she has her own hang-ups from growing up a gender non-conforming girl on a very patriarchal planet that Arevin just. Very much does not have.) (Helen is like, I love my non-threatening queer engineer boyfriend who thinks my specific brand of gender is sexy and could never take me in a fight or want to, whereas Yuri Arevin Needs a partner he can trust to defend themselves against him if necessary and could never in a million years date someone who could not at least make him work for it in a sparring match.)
Helen and Yuri both do still fall into the themes I'm evidently working with in the Kavagoran project; Helen has a non-normative body and a non-normative gender presentation, despite being cis and straight-passing enough for Kavagor to pretend, while Yuri has a physically admirable body but a face and background that is undesirable, not to mention his extremely problematic sexual proclivities, both of which have led to some estrangement from his self. Helen, like Sasha, is extremely attractive and desirable...to people not from her home planet. Yuri has only ever been desirable for his usefulness, which unfortunately Emil and Delara don't do a whole lot to correct even though that is a misapprehension on his part, and he's just kind of written himself off as Intrinsically Bad when he's not playing a well-defined role.
Helen did manage to have a much less fraught relationship with her sexuality than her father, so when she can finally believe Dimitri actually likes the things about her that have historically made her undesirable to Kavagoran men, she's like, "Oh hell yes," and doesn't take much further convincing, whereas her father is in his sixties before he starts actually dealing with his shit.
And Helen at first tries to keep her distance from Maria, mostly because like, yeah her papa needs friends and apparently a girlfriend, but Helen doesn't want another entitled Kavagoran older than her trying to force her into a square hole. Maria is also pretty abrasive, but her obvious disinterest in having a maternal relationship with Helen makes it easier for them to get along. By the time Yuri realizes he wants to marry Maria, Helen is ready to take a bullet for her, because actually this crusty bitch of a trans woman has a lot in common with her and really sincerely loves her papa. Helen ends up yelling at the baroness and chasing her out of the fitting room while they're shopping for Maria's wedding dress, because the things this kind of butch older common trans woman needs in a wedding dress are not the kind of things a younger, more femme baroness needs.
I suspect that Maria bitches some times about how bigger tits would get her misgendered less, and Helen is like YOU'D THINK THAT, WOULDN'T YOU but noooo you wear trousers because that way you have fucking pockets and can ride a horse in a pinch and go into low-g environments without flashing everyone and no one even notices your tits, they're like Oh hello sir what can I do for you. And then they're swapping stories about times their goddamn haircuts apparently tricked people about their genders.
