The Italian Connection (part 1) - It’s Now or Never
Welcome to the first post of a series I'll call The Italian Connection. From an idea hooked-on-elvis gave me some time ago, I'll write a few posts about Elvis connections to Italy, because I'm an Italian fan who lives in the Elvis wasteland (aka Europe) and it gives me joy to write about this. You’re welcome to suggest some topics for my next Italian connections.
I first heard Elvis' "It's Now or Never" on the car radio about 3 years ago, before becoming an Elvis fan. I'm sure I had heard it before, but I wasn't conscious of it, if that makes sense. I remember thinking: "Oh, it's 'O sole mio' with English lyrics. Who sang this?". I swear I thought the car radio was broken when I saw "It's Now or Never - Elvis Presley" appearing on the screen, but then I listened better and I recognized his voice. Even as a non fan, he had the most recognizable voice of all singers. I just didn't know that he sang this kind of songs, as I mostly knew him for the rock 'n roll classics and a few ballads.
It's kind of surprising to me that “It’s Now or Never”, recorded in April 1960, is actually Elvis' best-selling song and it's among the top ten best-selling physical singles of all time, with 20 million copies sold. It's ranked at #7, together with Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" and the charity single "We Are the World", written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie.
It is based on the classic Neapolitan song “‘O Sole Mio”, written in 1898, and to this day performed in Italy and in the rest of the world by opera singers, gondoliers and everything in between. The lyrics of the song were written by Giovanni Capurro, but the music was composed by Eduardo di Capua, perhaps while he was on tour in Odessa, a city on the Black Sea. It's a hymn to the sunshine of Naples and a love song at the same time, in the melodramatic style characteristic of traditional Neapolitan music.
"O' sole mio" is ubiquitous in Italy, it's almost like a national anthem, especially in Naples. In October of 1960, Elvis' version made it to #3 in Italy in the weekly charts, which was overwhelmingly made of Italian musica leggera (pop music). It also reached #17 in the annual chart of 1960, which is not bad at all for an American artist. I wouldn't say that Elvis' is the most famous version of the song, though, merely because "O' Sole Mio" is a favorite among opera singers, including Luciano Pavarotti, who used to sing a great version of it.
Elvis most likely knew the famous version by Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, recorded in 1916 (it was said to be a favorite record of his mother) and the version recorded by Mario Lanza, an Italian American tenor who was popular in the 1950s. Elvis shared his love for Lanza's operatic singing, displayed in successful movies like “The Great Caruso”, with a young Priscilla Beaulieu. When Elvis met her in the autumn of 1959, they must have talked about him, because he had just died, at the tender age of 38, after years of bad health and a controversial sleep diet (!). It’s possible that Elvis decided to record "It's Now or Never" in 1960 as a homage to him.
When Elvis recorded this song he was fresh out of the army and had filmed the Sinatra special the month before, in March 1960. I think it’s important to note that in 1957, Sinatra was rather skeptical about Elvis' vocal abilities. He said: "Elvis has no training at all. When he goes into something serious, a bigger kind of singing, we’ll find out if he is a singer". As we all know, Elvis had a lot of time to work on his singing while he was in the army, with the help of Charlie Hodge.
That’s probably why in 1960, eager to show off his extended vocal range with a "bigger kind of singing", Elvis decided to tackle this song. There was already a version with English lyrics, called “There’s No Tomorrow”, recorded by Tony Martin in 1949. He had dabbled with it a little bit in Germany, as proven by the home recordings that have surfaced. Nevertheless, he decided to have new lyrics written for him, as the song was in the public domain in the US.
With this choice in a way he was signaling that he intended to explore different genres, branching out from rock 'n roll in other words. As Shane Brown wrote in “Reconsider Baby” about his new vocal abilities, “the often out-of-control vibrato was successfully controlled, Elvis switched from singing with full power to barely a whisper like flipping a switch”. The Jordanaires begin the song with their layered harmonies, while a guitar cleverly imitates the sound of an Italian mandolin. Elvis sings this the way it is done in Italy, easing into the song and then building it up to a roar in the chorus.
So why did Elvis like Neapolitan music so much? According to Mark Duffett, it “allowed [him] to dramatically express assertive and passionate masculinity”. As a matter of fact, I find the dichotomy of tenderness and assertiveness that Elvis manages to express in this song, so masterfully expressed in the lyrics (“tomorrow will be too late / it’s now or never / my love won’t wait”) , a perfect fit for Elvis’ voice and personality.
Needless to say, the song was challenging to record. It took Elvis a few takes to nail the long high note at the end, as well as the right tone for it. He must have been satisfied with the result, though, because more than 10 years later, in 1972, during the Madison Square Garden press conference, he said that it was his favorite record of his. Elvis included “It’s Now or Never” in his concerts immediately after recording it (he performed it during the Pearl Harbor concert in 1961) and then again in February 1970, at the end of that engagement. In that occasion, it must have been a surprise choice, because he uncharacteristically instructs the TCB band on how to finish the song. I love this soulful version, with its gospel-like ending.
youtube
I wish Elvis had taken the time to learn the words and sung some of the original lyrics like he did with “Santa Lucia”, also a Neapolitan classic. In the 1970s, Elvis sometimes allowed one of this backup singers, Sherrill Nielsen, to sing the first verse of the Italian version, although with approximate lyrics. Goofing around like he often did, but also maybe hinting at the fact that the song was really old, in December 1976 Elvis introduced the song by saying: “Sherrill Nielsen is going to do the Italian version and I’m going to do the ancient Hindu version”. In this recording from one of Elvis' last concerts, Nielsen's singing is overindulgent to say the least and I wonder what Elvis thought of it. Can you decipher his expressions and let me know?
youtube
Bonus: One my favorite versions of “O Sole Mio”

♫ scott ♫ rachel and ♫ jeanscott. whichever ones you'd like :)
for rachel: meticulous bird - thao and the get down stay down, the song is about taking one's body back and really claiming one's individual agency/sovereignty, which really resonates w how i think of rachel.
for jeanscott! i have a couple (that i might have said before but): smoke - moddi is linked in my head to the end of the dps, and so is (i'm sorry) la traviatta act 3: parigi, o cara, specifically the 2000 luciano pavarotti version because i think kevin wada dressed jean as violetta in a drawing once and i did spend like. a month imagining a version of the dark phoenix saga where this is playing the night before they all go to fight on the moon? and now it is simply that to me bc i have never properly listened to la traviatta.
also i do have a separate playlist for jeanscott x-factor bc i think the vibes are different enough and THOSE songs include: almost blue- elvis costello and the attractions and diamond dave-the bird and the bee

Favourite time of year: definitely fall. I love when the days are still sunny but the mornings have a bite to the air. I love the anticipation and comfort as the leaves change and when I get to be spooky and cook for holidays.
Comfort foods: macaroni and cheese is my favorite food, and really almost any bread + cheese combo is a favorite of mine. I will eat mac and cheese when I’m sad and need cheering up, when I’m celebrating, when it’s a Tuesday. It’s the best food and always a comfort.
Do you collect anything: books? I’ve got a little collection of funko pops from some of my favorite characters/people. I certainly collect makeup like a crazy person. And books, especially used books. I have a snow globe collection that lives at my parents’ house and I have started getting magnets from every place I go as a a souvenir.
Favourite drinks: wine, whiskey sour, diet Dr. Pepper
Favourite music artists: I’m just gonna list a bunch that I love... Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran,ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Trixie Mattel, Celine Dion, George Ezra, Ella Fitzgerald, Lady Gaga, Florence + the Machine, Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Helen Reddy, Luciano Pavarotti, Elton John, Noah Cyrus, Blink-182, Reba McEntire, Sadie & the Hotheads
Current favourite songs: my all time favorite songs are Leaving on a Jetplane by Peter Paul & Mary and Daylight by Taylor Swift. Songs I’ve been listening to a lot lately are Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley, Anyone for You by George Ezra, Gold by Trixie Mattel, You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling by The Unrighteous Brothers (yes, I said that right, they’re a country duo cover band and I love them, and Edging by Blink-182
Favourite fics: mostly my own tbh. There’s a few by @rahleeyah that changed my life and a couple Downton fics from @whatsabriard that I think about at least once a week. But usually I write what I want to read and then I reread them as bedtime stories. I’m currently making my way though Metamorphosis again, which is the longest fic I’ve ever written and I’m quite proud of it.
Favourite video games: Mario Party, Tetris, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country.
I tag anyone who would like to do this and specifically @doctoraliceharvey @aboxfullofdarkness @blossom--of--snow @comepraisetheinfanta @featherpluckn @yesmadamepresident @margotgrissom @holy-ships-x-red-lips @whatsabriard

Trump 'Trolls' Liberal Taylor Swift Fans With 'Eras'-Themed T-Shirt Following Her Harris Endorsement
Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump departs a campaign event at the Central Wisconsin Airport on September 07, 2024 in Mosinee, Wisconsin.
GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has released a new T-shirt essentially poking fun at Taylor Swift and her fans after the pop star endorsed his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
The 2024 Trump campaign’s official account on X (Twitter) announced the lighthearted, humorous response to Swift’s decision.
“Calling all Swifties for Trump,” the Team Trump account posted, while attaching an image of the merchandise. “Get your Trump Era shirt today.”
The shirt features edited photographs of Trump in different colors, representing the former president’s different “eras” in reference to Swift’s “The Eras Tour.”
Trump is utilizing the comical marketing as a fundraising opportunity, requesting donations between $45 and $1,000 for the shirt.
“Look what you made me do,” the campaign stated above the T-shirt on the website, featuring the advertisement.
The fundraising goal for Trump’s “eras” shirt campaign has a goal of 200,000 donors, and so far, it is already well over 180,000 as of Friday morning.
Meanwhile, liberal “Swifties” outraged by Trump’s troll marketing scheme are now calling for Swift to sue the former president.
“I hope you get sued within an inch of your existence. He’s fixing to be in his unemployed little b**** era,” an X user furiously wrote in response.
“This is a disgrace of a shirt. I hope she strips Donald of everything he has for infringement,” another user added.
Swift announced her endorsement of Harris following the presidential debate, which Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), disregarded.
According to an Axios analysis of Trump’s music at his Florida club, he prefers to stick with a list of songs that include “Hello” by Lionel Richie, “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis, “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti, “November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses, and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones, The New Republic outlet reported.
So, the former president seems to enjoy older, more timeless tunes than what modern pop music has to offer.
“I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better, if you want to know the truth. She’s a big Trump fan,” Trump stated, referencing the wife of NFL star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“I don’t think Americans, whether they like her music or are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans,” Vance stated in response.

HAVE YOURSELF A MULTI FACET CHRISTMAS – by David D. Fowler & Aeon 999
As Elvis would say: MURRY KRIMMUS, y'all! MFF presents SCROOGE, FROSTY, RUDOLF, the GRINCH, the NUTCRACKER, HANDEL, DIE HARD, HOME ALONE, SNOOPY, LAUREL & HARDY, KRAMPUS, the BEATLES, BOB DYLAN, DAVID BOWIE, CHARLIE CHAPLIN, BJORK, BACH, BILLIE HOLIDAY, DAFFY DUCK, KATE BUSH, STEPHEN COLBERT, FRANK SINATRA, JOAN BAEZ, PRINCE, the MUPPETS, NAT KING COLE, MONTY PYTHON, BETTY BOOP, EMMYLOU HARRIS, PORKY PIG, CELINE DION, LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, DOCTOR WHO, and BABY JESUS!
You'll find all of this and so much more, by clicking the links at the bottom of the page. But first we offer a theological meditation upon Mary's renowned prayer, the MAGNIFICAT. This item consists of alternative lyrics for a Christmas favorite, written by feminist United Church pastor Jennifer Henry.
MARY DID YOU KNOW? Mary did you know, that your ancient words would still leap off our pages? Mary did you know, that your spirit song would echo through the ages? Did you know that your holy cry would be subversive word, that the tyrants would be trembling when they know your truth is heard? Mary did you know, that your lullaby would stir your own Child’s passion? Mary did you know, that your song inspires the work of liberation? Did you know that your Jubilee is hope within the heart of all who dream of justice, who yearn for it to start? The truth will teach, the drum will sound, healing for the pain The poor will rise, the rich will fall. Hope will live again Mary did you know, that we hear your voice for the healing of the nations? Mary did you know, your unsettling cry can help renew creation? Do you know, that we need your faith, the confidence of you, May the God that you believe in, be so true.

T’as rien compris si tu te dis chuis trop fort si j’harcèle
J’suis assez habile, assez agile
Comme Ali, j’suis fort man, natif
Blabla outro

The cast of the award-winning HBO show The Sopranos will be putting on a special musical episode this weekend. The episode will be set in a karaoke bar, where different members of the cast will be singing classic songs from the show’s soundtrack.
