The 40 - RPG tutorial
----
@the-ravenclaw-werewolf, @purplemochi20055, @hulkchloron99, and @maximum18
----
So...it's been a while everyone.
In this fancomic, we have Edward and Senku playing YGGDRASIL (ユグドラシル Yugudorashiru), a DMMO-RPG (Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) from the Overlord light novel series.
Aside from marveling over the advanced technology that allows people to upload their minds in a virtual world, the two of them are enjoying the wonders of role-playing as the heteromorphic race and seeing the entire realm of YGGDRASIL had to offer with plenty of missions and customizing items and weapons...so long as they can avoid encountering Human Race Players who are PKing those of the heteromorphic race.

#RPGCovers Week NIne Stormbringer (1981) Frank Brunner
In the 1970s and 80s, to my kid eye Michael Whalen’s covers were the absolute best. He was the first artist I actually remember looking to find their name. His Elric series in particular, for me, struck me as the height for a certain kind of high fantasy. So when the first Elric rpg dropped in 1981, it had a high bar.
And Stormbringer vaulted it, for me at least. The cover is striking an simple, dominated by reds, silvers, and blacks with the shocking white of Elric’s face and hair contrasting. I knew Brunner’s work from Doctor Strange, Creepy, Howard the Duck, and Warp! His style reminded me of Gene Colon and Gene Day. It’s simple and well crafted. Eventually Brunner would become the lead character designer for Fox’s X-Men cartoon series.
It’s a very different look from any other rpg item at the time. It chooses to focus on a still image of an iconic face, rather than a tableau which might illustrate the world or the kinds of things players could aspire to.
The cover I picked is from the box, but one of the great things for the game is the use of Brunner’s images throughout. The core book has an entirely different, full figure image done in red ink. Then the various chapters have large Brunner black & white images as a frontispiece. (Including classic Sword & Sorcery unclothed ladies). The chapter took that larger illustration and cut out bits as interior images. It’s a cheap way to go, but in this case it actually pulls the content together.

August Roseville Beach Reads
So I felt pretty unproductive in August. I went into a second bout with Elric hoping I'd like him better than I did the first time I tried to read him, but that wasn't really the case. I certainly appreciate him better than I did, but getting through those books was a fucking slog, and I'm happy to be done. Technically, the Fortress of the Pearl isn't a Roseville Beach Read since it came out in 1989, and technically I strongly prefer to read series in publication order, but I was stuck with an omnibus edition so I ground my teeth and got through it. (Some would say the same thing for Weird of the White Wolf, but it's all reprints/rewrites of shorter fiction that was published in the 60s.)
I'd been meaning to pick up both The Exorcist and The Bull from the Sea for years decades and kept not getting around to it. If I'm ever stuck in a 70s paperback exchange, I'd happily read either one again.
The Dispossessed, which I hadn't read before, is probably the best, most rewarding book I've read this summer. Getting through it while dealing with some of my own inner demons was rough, but I can't recommend it highly enough.

This piece graced the box for Chaosium's Stormbringer RPG, one of those games I wish I'd picked up in the '80s and never did.

I am busy working on a big commission so not much updates to post.
Here is the world my RPG group generated for our new campaign of the Black Sword Hack, a RPG inspired by the Saga of Elric. But instead of playing in the Young Kingdoms you created your own world to doom. Will the group be able to find the Rune weapon and save this world? We will see...
It was fun to map what we rolled on the random tables. :)

I've made a new Sword and Sorcery game
Because I can't stop making micro RPGs, I've decided to make another. Ages Undreamed Of is a Sword and Sorcery style rules light game where the only three stats are "Barbarian" "Civilized" and "Eldritch". So, basically Conan, The Gray Mouser, and Elric for any S&S fans. Progression in this game is rolling d20s equal to your treasure hall on a random chart and picking one you like, spending all the loot in the act. This is meant to replicate the every partying and every poor nature of the Pulp Fantasy Hero. Conan did not have a strong stock portfolio famously. It also has a free form magic system which lets sufficiently eldritch characters cast what ever spells they like, at a price. I hope you enjoy the game!

Speaking of RPGs, while I appreciate that folks are finally accepting that Tolkien's heroes are fucked up after the ending, because JRR lived through WW1 while many of his friends didn't, but the fundamental myth you build RPG games on top of being the story about the Evil load-bearing Lord and his empire of fundamentally evil dudes you have to kill to the last man (or evade) makes me chuckle everytime a DM piteously complains no-one negotiates with the Bridge Goblins for safe passage.
Meanwile, Elric is one of my favorite dudes, but his murdering everyone at the insistence of his possesed sword "I love murdering guys for their souls", rarely works out in the end

Sounds like you should have a nap. THEN FIRE ZE MISSILES! (Or tell me about your DnD character. It's something I don't know much about but always looked like a fun thing to get into!)
It’s a ton of fun - especially if you’re playing with friends, and ESPECIALLY especially if those friends happen to be storytellers. I’ve played tabletop RPGs with people who aren’t storytellers before, and it’s fine, but those players tend to be more concerned with battles and mechanics than the story being told. Which, if that’s what they like, good for them! But I’m playing with eight other people who are emotionally invested in the story the DM has created for us, and it’s just incredible. This past weekend we drove each other and ourselves to literal tears.
And you don’t necessarily need to know all of the lore of DnD to play! Plenty of games take place in other worlds. The one I’m playing now does. I’ve seen DnD campaigns set in a fantasy high school suburb, in modern day NYC, hell - even a GOT-type political intrigue campaign that took place in a refrigerator, where all the characters were food! The possibilities are limitless.
Anyway - my character. The whole premise behind him was “what if, in the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, the breaking of the curse didn’t heal the fatal knife wound?” Things have sort of spiraled from there. This character is partly inspired by the Beast, by Rumpelstiltskin, by Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist and RobotMan from Doom Patrol, by Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and probably several others I’m not remembering. He’s a loser barbarian wife guy who was supposed to be all aloof but has somehow found himself as the party’s dad figure.
Thank you for indulging me! If you ever do decide to get into DnD, I’d love to hear about it!

IIRC, there was a big stink about decades ago and Moorcock himself was like is he just supposed to sue everyone who writes a sad boi with a big sword now?
So I watched a video the other night on the whole “Geralt is a ripoff of Elric” thing. Yeah, it wasn’t that Razorfist guy but it sounded many of the same arguments. I expected the creator to misrepresent The Witcher, but for them to get basic facts about the Elric saga wrong as well? Wow.
Newsflash, Elric isn’t different from his race because he has emotions. Melniboneans do have emotions, it’s just that culturally they focus on doing things that give them pleasure. Elric is different because he has devolved a basic sense of morality beyond “do what feels good” and “follow tradition” that passes as one for his race. Meanwhile, Witchers feel emotions as well. They just try to suppress them in the face of the prejudice they sustain. The idea they have no emotions is just a stereotype, albeit one Geralt clings to. Meanwhile, Elric is not one to suppress his own emotions giving way to his reputation as a drama queen (which is one of the qualities about him that I love).
And I’m going to flat out state this. Elric and Geralt may both be mercenaries, but Geralt is the one just doing his job. Elric is always in pursuit of his own goals in the original saga, even if it is just revenge. And I never saw Cymoril and Zirozinia as powerful action girls like Yennifer, they were just damsels in distress (outside of evil queen Cymoril in the recent comics).
If this is how people are going to act I’m worried. Like, do people really think they are doing the Elric saga any favors claiming The Witcher ripped everything off? Especially when Moorcock himself had multiple inspirations, from European mythology to Zenith the Albino. If anything, it makes fans of the last of the Dragonlords look like a bunch of guys jealous that The Witcher is as popular as it is.
#The Witcher#Elric#This does include Guts#GW literally lifted the whole Melniibone saga for their high elves after they lost the Stormbringer RPG license.

frank do you think final fantasy 13 is the worst game in the final fantasy series
Man, that's a divisive topic in the fan community. I'm not even sure how to answer this question, because for some people it would be one of the best in the series.
I can say that I'm not a fan of the shift in aesthetic from traditional JRPGs to Western-style gameplay and storytelling (and "high-budget" modern visuals). That's one thing FFXIII gets a lot of flak for from hardcore fans.
For example,
this video comparing FFXIII to Mega Man 2, the closest I've seen someone get to saying that the former is "obsolete":
I tend to prefer the old-style JRPGs with grid-based combat systems, silly level designs, and funny looking characters like this:
For me it's like: yeah, "supergraphics" and cool CG cutscenes are cool, but if you actually care about the meat of the gameplay, what do you end up with?
In FFXIII's case, we got a lot of strong ideas mixed with a lot of rote mechanics (such as the fact that the combat system is basically just slower-paced FFXII, but with "quick-time" actions) and a bunch of extraneous baggage like gun-based "parasurvival" combat and the fact that the protagonists are all known for their ability to fight on the run or use guns.
The former are unnecessary because they don't add anything to the plot or storytelling -- they're just devices to make combat more exciting. The latter make the story feel less real, less connected to the characters, which is ironic because FFXIII's story is trying to be about realistic people and the realistic problems they face. If, say, Edward Elric were a playable character in FFXIII, surely there would be a million ways for him to use his abilities to evade gunfire. But since FFXIII is just a standard JRPG without any of that kind of thinking, this feels tacked-on, like one of the characters is straining for an excuse to engage in their special power.
Really, FFXIII has the same fundamental problem as all other FFs: it's a hybrid between a game (with cool graphics and cinematic cutscenes) and a tabletop RPG (with exhaustively detailed world-building). But unlike previous FFs, it is very explicit about trying to pull both of these things together. So you get the characters' health bars set in stone with "strategic parasurvival" functions that don't really add anything to the moment-to-moment gameplay. You get battle cinematics and cutscenes that elaborate on the "strategic" nature of certain moves. You get long cutscenes about characters' trauma that just feel like too much background for a JRPG that, at the end of the day, is still about fighting.
The thing about FFXIII is: the "gameplay" part feels like the end result of some compromise, while the "story and lore" part is like the end result of someone who really cared about it. I've talked in the past about how the latter is often the worst part of the game, because a lot of games have horribly unimaginative stories, but FFXIII is the rare game that is so unimaginative that it's awful but also feels like the product of people who really care about their work. This just makes it all seem so weird.
FFXIII isn't bad, though. I'm not even sure it's mediocre. At the very least it's good enough to be interesting as a failed experiment. Many people love it (though not quite as many as you'd think from its sales), and I'm sure if you like FFXIII you love the story and everything. It's just a shame that the gameplay is so boring and generic, since "boring and generic" are the exact things the game is trying not to be.
