New Ellen Brock video! Really enjoy these line edit videos and how they really dig into the need to be mindful of what your prose is and isn't conveying or what details are needed to paint a clearer picture and which are distractions that pull focus from what's actually important in a scene.

So I saw this post about Ellen Brock and her video The Four Types of Novel Writers. And as I've been in yet another Biggest Writing Rut Of My Life I went ahead and watched it.
youtube
She proposes that not all writing advice will work equally well for everyone, and knowing which type you are can help you better identify tips and strategies that will work for your writing process rather than hinder it. Which. I mean. Yes please? That sounds delightful. 😻
As she outlined the four types (divided into quarters between a Pantser/Plotter axis and a Methodological/Intuitive axis) I immediately recognized that I was not a plotter. It was actually a relief; I'd been carrying around this feeling that plotting was the "correct" way to write, and that being a pantser meant I didn't have the discipline to write properly. But she had a lovely rebuttal for that, which was: if plotting your story out sucks you dry of all inspiration to write it, then it is not the process for you. And as I'd experienced this multiple times, it was just like. ✨Fantastic.✨
I felt a lot of resonance with her "Intuitive Pantser" type, but she warned that a lot of people like the idea of being an intuitive pantser and may romanticize it as the ideal way to write, but that they're actually relatively rare. Most people can't really write like that. So I thought, Ah. I'm probably not the Intuitive Pantser I think I am.
Ellen has a playlist of videos with strategies for each of the four types, so I started with the Methodological Pantser since it seemed the logical place to go. A lot of it sounded familiar to me (the need to embrace the inherent chaos of the process, the haphazard jumping between writing/outlining/editing phases, etc), but I wasn't like. Profoundly Moved.
I decided to go ahead and watch the Intuitive Pantser one.
youtube
So anyway 15 minutes in I start just bawling. 😎
Because everything she's saying, down to the tips she's giving that work for this brain type, are the things I usually do or feel that I need to function creatively (or things that I haven't done but sound so excellent). And to have someone spell it out as "This is a proper way to write according to how your brain works" and also let me know that "You will probably feel confused and frustrated when you attempt to apply conventional writing advice to your process" made me feel like less of an imposter than I have felt in probably two years. And made me feel Not Afraid to pick up a story and start writing again.
So, thanks Ellen. You're a real one. 👊😎

A question did you plot your Taryn X ghost fic aka outline it or just wrote it and let the story come to you?
I'm a methodological pantser (thanks ellen brock for helping me realize my writing process is not crazy ✨) so I started with a very loose idea of: (1) where I wanted the characters to start, (2) where I wanted them to end, and (3) big developments that needed to happen along the way. all the little details came together in the process of writing, revising, re-outlining, restructuring, then rewriting. that might sound wild haha but it's just how my brain works—so yes I had a plan, but my outline was very bare bones to begin with & became more fleshed out as I wrote!

Rescued Writing Links!
When cleaning out the HEY, Writers! Pinterest I moved some links here. The internet has changed a LOT since I started collecting these, so some links may include outdated info. All were still active when I made this, but it's been in my drafts for a hot minute.
Protip! In Firefox, check to toggle reader view when reading these (mobile: the page icon in the url bar; desktop: same icon or hit F9). This removes popups, ads, screen clutter, and often has an audio option.
Survivors of Internet Decay Award!
These active sites featured most often in my collections so they get the top of the list.

the secret to the canucks success this season is not the naming of quinn hughes as captain or rick tocchet becoming head coach; no its the little hughes that has been with the team since the beginning
at the beginning of the 2020-2021 season, quinn hughes arrived with a new buddy in tow.
nora hughes has not missed a game or road trip in her three years of life, and for the first time quinn has given me permission to talk about her impact on the team.
we have seen glimpses of the little girl, who was seen on the ice with her uncles at the all-star game, and is always around the arena causing trouble.
"shes a rascal," brock boeser says, after claiming he's the favorite uncle, "shes always running away and causing panic but she is always keeping the energy up and providing us with exactly what we need,"
when asked to expand on her causing panic the minnesota native just chuckles,
"well she loves to go find her uncles without telling anyone,"
the most recent incident happened after game one against the edmonton oilers.
nora had spent the game watching with her bubbe and grandpa, but when they took their eyes off of her for one second, while they waited for their eldest son, she took off to find her daddy.
expertly navigating the depths of rogers arena.
and this is when the general public was introduced to the rambunctious little girl, who came running into the locker room and right to her dad as he started his media availability.
"DADDY!" she yells as she frantically pushes her way through the masses of media members. much like on the ice quinn remained calm,
"bug what?" he then looked around, "where are bubbe and gramps?" and the little girl just shrugged,
"waiting, but i wanna see you," and she quickly makes herself comfortable in quinns lap her lamby clutched tightly in her hand as her eyes begin to flutter shut.
when asked about it rick tocchet just chuckles,
"she keeps it light thats for sure. she started walking then running and she hasn't stopped,"
"she doesnt sleep on flights," demko says, "so huggy will let her walk up and down and she'll just come and poke us to wake us up. and you cant be mad cause shes so cute,"
"shes such a breath of fresh air," jt miller says a huge smile on his face, "she is always willing to give you a hug and even when you can have the worst game ever she will be so thrilled to see you. q has done an incredible job of raising her, and they've both grown so much over the last couple of years. its like when q cant lift us up she can and it works even though shes 3 years old,"
when i ran into a panicked ellen after the media availability i asked her what her granddaughter is like compared to her uncles,
"she is so much like jack. just a ball of constant energy with the brightest smile, but like q shes shy and thoughtful. she loves hard and is very stubborn," the grandma says, "definitely gives us a run for our money and keeps us on our toes but you just cant be mad at her,"
as it appears it seems that nora hughes, although mischievous and a certified troublemaker, is keeping it light and much like her father is a big factor in the teams success this season.
nora is absolutely getting herself into the canucks locker room and insisting on sitting with quinn while he does media tonight
she just sits herself on his lap, her thumb in her mouth and her stuffie clutched in her other hand as she fights sleep from the comfort of her daddys chest

can we just talk about following quinn around while he’s golfing for a min? all of this content of him playing golf is getting to me soooo bad
like, he’d always ask you to tag along with him and drive the cart for him, just wanting to spend time with you. it’s definitely not because he loves to see you wear your little golf skirt and canucks visor.
you would say no most of the time, not wanting to go ride around in the hot sun all day when you could stay in your air conditioned apartment and watch reality shows. when the weather turns, though, you’ll grace him with your presence every once in awhile.
you especially like to go when he’s playing with his teammates. you loved being his cheerleader and subtly sabotaging his teammates. like the time they asked you to hold the flag while they putted, and you “accidentally” hit quinn’s ball in the hole with the pole.
or the time brock tagged along and you blew the horn on the golf cart just as he was putting for a birdie, causing his ball to sail right past the hole, rolling right off of the green entirely. when he looked over at you, face red and angry, you claimed innocence. “what? i was thirsty and needed to get the cart girl’s attention. how was i supposed to know that was an important putt?”
you always had the most fun when all three hughes brothers were golfing together. you would drive quinn around in a cart while jack and luke had their own. and, occasionally, ellen and jim would join too. ellen and yourself would sit and chit chat while the boys and jim were on the green, teasing each other and not playing by official golf rules in the slightest.
ellen would always pack a cooler with snacks and a light lunch for everyone to have while on the course. the whole group would find a shady spot right off of the course and eat, giving the guys an opportunity to make wagers and bets on who would win and what the others would have to endure if they lost.
usually the punishments were lighthearted and harmless, but every once in awhile one arises that causes some trouble. like the time jack had to jump into one of the small ponds on a course when you were all on vacation together in hawaii, resulting in a lifetime ban for every single one of you when he got caught.
you enjoyed when it was just you and quinn, too. the days that a cool breeze was constantly flowing and you would bring along a book. quinn would let you choose the music that flows through the clip on speaker attached to the cart, knowing you always have a new playlist you’re wanting to show him. he’d buy you a cocktail to sip on throughout the day, knowing how much you loved a fruity drink.
quinn’s favorite part of you tagging along was knowing you were there because he asked you to be. even though you hated golf and claimed it was the most boring sport ever created, you went simply because he wanted you to be there and you knew it was something he enjoyed. he loved being able to look over and hear your little cheers for him every time he putts the ball into the hole. or the way you always say “sounded like a hole in one to me” after the initial stroke at every new hole.
he loved that every time the cart girl drove by, you always made sure he had a fresh beer if he wanted one. he also loved how you’d trade out the beer for water around hole 12, making sure he’s not getting too crazy since he’s the driver in the relationship (other than at the course, of course).
quinn would offer to teach you to play nearly every time you went with him, but after trying to hit a ball or two you always gave up, telling him it’s much more fun to watch him play than having to focus on anything other than how good his ass looks in his pants when he’s putting, considering that’s the real reason you agree to go with him. but what quinn doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

hiya! for writers who are complete beginners, kinda sorta maybe write at a high school level, can't describe to save their lives, have overall bad flow (as in they can't decide what little moments scenes to think up and even write, if they do, they're no good), have been told countless times to write daily and just read more but that doesn't cover the basics or foundations of creative writing, not like they can learn from a book bc they're a hands on learner anyway and p.s they're super broke so can't afford writing classes and no library near them offers free ones ---- aka me :( --- do you have any advice? lol i feel kinda doomed and that maybe writing isn't for me, but I don't wanna get my hopes down!! with the right tools, it's possible.
Free Resources for Learning How to Write
I want to start with addressing why you've been told so often "to write daily and read more" as a way to learn how to write. It's very difficult to learn and excel at a craft if you have no experience with said craft. You can read all the information in the world about how to forge a sword, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to pick up a hunk of metal and be able to forge a beautiful sword. You need to spend a lot of time watching other people forge swords, and spend a lot of time actually practicing each step yourself if you want to get good at it. Writing works the same way. Reading lets you experience what fiction should be, writing lets you practice each step for yourself.
Fortunately, there are lots of ways to read fiction for free. You can borrow books from friends, family members, and members of your community. You can check out books and e-books from your local library if you have one. You can look for Little Free Libraries in your neighborhood. There's also a lot of legally free fiction available online. Project Gutenberg, Planet E-Book, Bartleby, Literature.org, Classic Literature, Classic Short Stories, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Library of Short Stories, Levar Burton Reads, and sites like Kobo, Amazon, and Audible often offer freebies of both e-books and audio books.
Other free ways to learn how to write:
1 - Follow bloggers and vloggers and authors on social media who talk about the craft of writing. Some of my favorites are: Joanna Penn/The Creative Penn, K.M. Weiland, Liselle Sambury, Abbie Emmons, Hannah Lee Kidder, Brittany Wang, Alyssa Matesic, Bethany Atazadah, Lindsay Puckett, Alexa Donne, Shaelin Writes, Ellen Brock, The Writing Gals, and Sincerely, Vee.
2 - Follow writing craft blogs here on tumblr: (some suggestions) @writingwithcolor, @howtofightwrite, @heywriters, @cripplecharacters, @lgbtqwriting, @fixyourwritinghabits, @wordsnstuff, @yourbookcouldbegayer, @lizard-is-writing
3 - Watch writing craft videos on YouTube: If there's something specific you want to learn about, say, "how to structure a scene," type it into YouTube and many different videos will pop up that walk you through how to structure a scene. Just look for one that strikes you as appealing!
4 - Look for free writing resources online: many authors (especially indie authors and writing gurus/coaches like Joanna Penn, K.M. Weiland, Bethany Atazadeh, Brittany Wang, and Abbie Emmons) offer free writing resources on their web sites or by signing up for their newsletters. Often you'll see writers participating in free online writing summits/workshops which you can sign up for and either watch the videos live or via video playback that is offered for a short period of time (like 24 hours.)
5 - Do a Google Search: believe it or not, there's not a single thing you could want to learn about writing that you can't find for free on Google. If you want to learn how to improve your grammar, go to Google, type in "tips for improving grammar" and you will get a million articles that will tell you how to do just that. Want to learn how to improve your story's flow? Google "how to improve story flow" and you'll have your answer. You can even search for free worksheets, guides, and workbooks on just about anything you want. "Free character development worksheet" brought back a ton of nice looking free worksheets. "Free worldbuilding workbook" brought up several free workbooks and worksheets to help you with worldbuilding. Everything you could want to know is out there.
And, bonus: you can always read through the posts in my WQA master list to get help with a wide variety of craft and writer-related issues.
Happy learning! ♥
