a melodramatic poem
you know i love you, right? that when i spurn your addresses it’s not out of spite my heart’s just a thing contested i never meant to leave you in the trenches
i like it when you talk to me, you know? it’s just that you’re leaving bruises and i don’t know what to do but turn cold sending myself into a crisis for something you can’t control
you know i care about you, no? it’s always been more trouble than it’s worth but that hasn’t stopped me from calling this blackbox home even if mirth was never ingrained in me at birth
hey, i’m sorry i’m writing this instead of telling you to stop like adrian asks but there isn’t much i can tell you to interdit and right now i shouldn’t be widening the crack i should reactivate that button and fucking boop you back
#kassidy’s mirror booped me about six times and that pissed me off for some reason LMAO#eliza joan#kassidy james#poetry#boop#writing#80 percent shitpost 20 percent vent

I know william and others often accuse Eliza of her AMBITION, AMBITION, AMBITION, but what I've finally understood about her in the last few eps of Season 3 is that it's not just about her career ambitions- investigating is her PASSION.
it almost feels like something she can't control.
it's a part of her personality, her intellectual desires, her curiosity, her calling. It's not just a professional ambition or goal that she can choose to switch to another field or career.
It makes her a more relatable and likable character when I see that it's not bc she wants to 'get ahead in her career at all costs so she'll take a case even if william asks her not to', but it's more of 'I am so passionate and curious about finding who did this and solving something that puzzles me that it's hard for me to say no if you ask me and it's just unfortunate happenstance that you were slightly involved before.'
I realized this bc I was shipping William/Eliza, and thinking how brilliantly crafted the emotional conflict is between why they would WORK TOGETHER SO WELL, but also why they could potentially ruin their friendship.
Bc I thought, Eliza!!! WHY CANT YALL JUST GET TOGETHER!! Is your ambition really so strong that you would let that get in the way of your relationship with William?
Well, 1) ambition is not a flaw, nor is passion, and it just so happens that the path of her passion intersects, often uncomfortably, with william's values and expectations
and 2) william will need to adjust his expectations and POV if he is to seriously consider Eliza as a romantic partner bc she deserves FULL acceptance emotionally, professionally, and aspirational-ly.

My bookshelf!
Not pictured: The Water Outlaws by S. L. Huang, Strike the Zither by Joan He, and Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao
Two years ago, I decided to completely stop purchasing books by white authors. I definitely have a preference for East Asian (especially Chinese) and indigenous authors. I'm currently expanding it to include S/SE Asian and African/Black authors.
Books I haven't read yet: The Poppy War, Never Whistle at Night, Moonstorm, Of Jade and Dragons, The Girl with No Reflection, Fathomfolk, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, The Night Ends with Fire, and the Emperor of the Endless Palace.
Books I'll be getting soon: A Bright Heart by Kate Chenli, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, and The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahey by Briony Cameron
Update: I finished reading A Bright Heart, Of Jade and Dragons, and The Night Ends with Fire, along with a few others that I didn't describe in the last paragraph. I'm currently halfway through Fathomfolk.
PS: I wasn't aware Shannon Chakraborty was white when I bought the book, but my book shelf is also lacking Muslim representation

Been thinking about Sam cutting down on hours after Joan is born, but especially when Penny is born. That way he can spend more time with them and be there for their special events as they get older
#love the idea of him passing off a neuro consult onto another attending and everyone is questioning it except for the neuro attending who’s#like ‘oh he was in a bit of a hurry to leave. Joan’s school is putting on a production of Hamilton and she’s Eliza. he didn’t want to miss#it’#🧠

She’s my confirmation saint. I chose her when I was 13 for no reason other than she went against the grain. Ten years later, having been betrayed and disappointed by so many Catholic leaders I nearly idolized, her story gives me a lot of solace.
I almost completely walked away from God, and the line popped into my head “I’m erasing myself from the narrative. Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted when you broke her heart—you have torn it all apart, I’m watching it burn.”
And I realized the song was called “Burn” which is how my patron died.
Your patron chooses you—you don’t choose them. And she chose me because she wanted to lead me through my trials which parallel so much with her own.
I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless / ills have no weight and tears no bitterness / where is death’s sting, where grace thy victory? / I triumph still if thou abide with me
Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes / shine through the gloom and point me to the skies / heaven’s morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee / in life, in death oh Lord, abide with me

St. Joan of Arc
Born on 1412 in Domrémy-la-Pucelle, France
Died May 30, 1431 in Rouen, France
Feast Day May 30
Patron Saint of soldiers and France
Canonized by Pope Benedict the XV
Joan of Arc was born to a farmer father and his devoutly Catholic wife. At the age of 12 or 13 Joan began to hear voices and experience visions, which she interpreted as coming from God. The voices instructed her on how to live a pious life. Later the voices would begin to instruct her to deliver France from the invading English establish Charles VII as the country's rightful king. Joan later identified these voices as coming from St. Michael the Arc Angel, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and Margaret of Antioch. "When I was thirteen, I had a voice from God to help me to govern myself. The first time, I was terrified. The voice came to me about noon: it was summer, and I was in my father’s garden….I saw it many times before I knew it was Saint Michael….He was not alone, but duly attended by heavenly angels….He told me Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret would come to me, and I must follow their counsel; that they were appointed to guide and counsel me in what I had to do, and that I must believe what they would tell me, for it was at our Lord’s command." It was St. Michael who would instruct her in war combat. At the age of 17 Joan of Arc led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years’ War. The conflict between France and England lasted from 1337 to 1453. Attributing her victories to divine guidance, Charles VII was able to assume his rightful throne as king of France on July 17, 1429. It was then that Joan of Arc fulfilled the divine mission given to her by the Saints whose will was that of God. Following the coronation of Charles VII Joan continued to participate in military campaigns until her capture. On May 23, 1430, while defending the town of Compiègne from a Burgundian assault, Joan was captured by the Burgundian forces led by John of Luxembourg. The English were eager to discredit Joan, her divine mission, and by extension, the legitimacy of Charles VII's rule. In an attempt to achieve this, the English orchestrated a trial against Joan, charging her with heresy, witchcraft, and various other offenses. Joan was found guilty of all charges and was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. Joan of Arc asked for a crucifix to be held before her and repeatedly invoked the name of Jesus. 25 years after her death, on July 7, 1456, Joan was proclaimed innocent of the charges brought against her. The trial which resulted in Joan of Arc's death was annulled. She was subsequently declared a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and her official canonization was on May 16, 1920 being elevated to Sainthood by Pope Benedict XV.

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … January 16
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/df82e170bd819694756e0b9e07b6fcab/72b1f7c3b62f66a7-4d/s500x750/2edf7cb0210222afa02a51587049a4eaec181ea4.webp)
1847 – Eliza McCormick of Ontario is arrested after posing as a man and proposing marriage to a woman. A Hartford, CT newspaper dubs her “a female Lothario” for living as a man. McCormick had taken on a male persona for two to three years and during this time had at least six courtships, three to whom she proposed and was accepted. One of these women, a dressmaker, even made her own wedding dress. According to The Transgender Foundation of America’s (TFA) Archive in Houston, Texas, social shame was used to force McCormick to conform to typical gender norms after McCormick was jailed.
1887 – On this date, playwright George Kelly (d.1974) was born in Philadelphia. Although better known as the uncle of the future Princess Grace of Monaco, Kelly was a successful Broadway playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor. Kelly won the Pulitzer Prize in 1925 for his play "Craig's Wife." The play served as the basis for the 1950 Joan Crawford film "Harriet Craig." Notable actors who appeared in works by Kelly include Alison Skipworth, Josephine Hull, Lee Tracy, Tallulah Bankhead, Spring Byington, Joan Blondell, Ina Claire and Rosalind Russell.
George maintained a fifty-five-year relationship with his lover William Weagley up until his death. Weagley was seemingly passed off often as George's valet. That Kelly was gay was a closely guarded secret and went unacknowledged by his family to the point of not inviting Weagley to his funeral;however, although Weagley was not invited, he managed to sneak inside and sat in a back pew, where he wept.
1921 – Fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo was born (d.2004). Best known for his work on the covers of Cosmopolitan Magazine and his celebrity portraits, Scavullo big break was working at Vogue magazine under well-known fashion photographers Cecil Beaton, John Rawlings, and Horst P. Horst. But the major turning point in his career came in 1965 when Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown hired him to help develop a new and sexier image for the magazine. With free rein to select the models, wardrobe, make-up, and hair styling, Scavullo successfully created the image of the modern day Cosmo girl.
Scavullo was also responsible for the famous Cosmopolitan centerfold of a nude Burt Reynolds. Scavullo would go on to shoot every Cosmopolitan cover over the next three decades. Beginning in 1972, he was assisted by Sean M. Byrne, who also became his life partner. Scavullo also created memorable shots for various movie posters and Broadway shows, including one for A Star is Born (featuring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson), as well as a portrait of Julie Andrews for Blake Edwards' . He was also popular throughout his career for his celebrity portraits with many becoming iconic pieces and symbols of pop culture. In 2004 Scavullo died of heart failure while on his way to a photo shoot with a then up-and-coming CNN news anchor, Anderson Cooper.
1933 – The American essayist, novelist, filmmaker, and activist Susan Sontag was born on this date (d.2004). Sontag was one of the most important public intellectuals of the last half of the twentieth century. Her published works include On Photography and Against Interpretation. Sontag wrote frequently about the intersection of high and low art and the form/content dichotomy across the arts. Her celebrated and widely-read 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp'" was epoch-defining, examining an alternative sensibility to that which considers the best art in terms of its seriousness. It gestured towards and expounded the "so bad it's good" concept of popular culture for the first time.
Sontag had committed relationships with photographer Annie Leibovitz, choreographer Lucinda Church, writer Maria Irene Fornes, and other women. In the early 1970s, she was romantically involved with Nicole Stephane, the Rothschild banking heiress turned movie actress.
Many of Sontag's obituaries failed to mention her significant same-sex relationships, most notably with photographer Leibovitz. In response to this criticism, The New York Times' Public Editor, Daniel Okrent, defended the newspaper's obituary, stating that at the time of Sontag's death, a reporter could make no independent verification of her romantic relationship with Leibovitz (despite attempts to do so). Okrent is only one in a long line of abettors to the erasure of Queer people's sexuality. Why do we state this? To believe the New York Times, you'd have to believe they had no access in 2004 to Google. You see, In an interview in The Guardian in 2000, Sontag was quite open about her bisexuality:
"Shall I tell you about getting older?", she says, and she is laughing. "When you get older, 45 plus, men stop fancying you. Or put it another way, the men I fancy don't fancy me. I want a young man. I love beauty. So what's new?" She says she has been in love seven times in her life, which seems quite a lot. "No, hang on," she says. "Actually, it's nine. Five women, four men."
1980 – Justin Johnson, known by his stage name Alyssa Edwards, is an American drag performer, choreographer, and businessperson. Johnson was known for competing in drag pageantry (notably Miss Gay America 2010) before rising to national prominence on the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. Johnson lives in Mesquite, Texas, where he owns and runs an award-winning studio, Beyond Belief Dance Company. Johnson and his dance studio are the centerpieces of a new web-series, "Haus of Edwards", which premiered in late 2017.
Johnson performs under the stage name Alyssa Edwards. He chose his name in homage to Alyssa Milano and to his drag mother Laken Edwards, a former drag queen. Johnson is part of the drag family "the Haus of Edwards" and serves as drag mother to fellow RuPaul's Drag Race contestants Shangela Laquifa Wadley, Laganja Estranja, and Gia Gunn. Johnson was one of the judges of the 2010 California Entertainer of the Year pageant, which Shangela won.
Johnson appeared in the 2008 documentary Pageant. The film focused on the 34th Miss Gay America pageant of 2006. On December 9, 2010, Johnson was stripped of his 2010 Miss Gay America title for having business dealings in conflict with obligations to the Miss Gay America organization. First alternate Coco Montrese replaced Johnson as the winner of Miss Gay America. That same year, Johnson was also stripped of his title as All American Goddess.
1993 – Jack Merridew is an American author and YouTube personality. He is well known for his light hearted storytime videos.
Merridew was born on January 16, 1993 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Parkland High School and Ithaca College with a degree in screenwriting.
Merridew began posting videos on YouTube in 2012, reaching one-hundred thousand subscribers by January 2015 and has since garnered more than 370,000 subscribers. Merridew posts videos pertaining to: the LGBT community, sexuality, and body positivity. From his success on YouTube, Merridew filmed a commercial for gay adult novelty website, adammale and has self-released two books: Fireworks Over Suburbia in 2012 and Teenage Idol in 2013. Prior to fame, Merridew worked as a cashier at Wegmans, a grocery store in Pennsylvania.
2008 – On this date Moroccan courts imprisoned 6 people for allegedly taking part in a gay wedding.

Family Feud Nominations, Who is the Best Doctor Who Family
If I've missed a character out of one of the families let me know (within reason, I imagine all these families are massive in the EU, so prioritise tv or significant characters)
Currently, the only rule is no families may inculde anyone who is even ambiguously The Doctor, it'll get super complicated super fast imo
Any characters, eg River, who can link up multiple different families to create a single massive family unit will be treated on a case by case basis. If it is possible to pick one of the smaller family units that they are a part of to include them in while not including them in any of the others (in a way everyone will agree at least makes sense) they will be included in that family only, otherwise they will not be included
Please bare in mind when you are nominating that I am hoping to keep the number of nominations under 64 to run this as a mini-tournament. This is not a hard rule so if nominations do exceed 64 its not a big deal, just something I'd like everyone to bare in mind

Do you ever wonder how many geniuses had the misluck of being a woman? Because I do.
I look at Maria Skłodowska - Curie and I'm getting mad when people erase her polish heritage.
I look at Joan D'arc and how some people made her amour as a halloween costume. It makes me mad.
I look at my language books and I can't find woman's story. The first novel by polish woman was published in 1818. I look at her first book and I think how it is. Why we don't talk about her in polish classes? Her name was Klementyna Hoffmanowa
I think about Eliza Orzeszkowa, the only woman we talked about literature in years. Now I read "1984" by George Orwell. She published her last short story in 1910 but she started writing in 1886. Why do we talk about only one of her short stories? Because it was about war and it was patriotic?
I think about Wisława Szymborska, polish poet, who wrote many anthology of poetry and won Nobel Prize, who died in 2012 yet no man care about her.
I cry over Emilia Plater, young captain of polish army, who died in 1831. Who fought against armies of Russia, Austria and back then country we call now Germany.
Polish woman rights came in to life after the first world war. Polish women were losing their rights after getting married in some parts of Poland (Śląsk for example)
Woman back then fought for their rights, even felt good with the possibility of not making it. They screamed to be heard. The fought so hard and now Trump wants to destroy it. "I'm gonna to protect you?" he says yet it's him who is accused of sexual abuse.
We should be thankful for feminism because withou it no woman could speak at loud.
So yeah, I'm mad at Trad Wives but I also worry about them — how many give up their dreams for being stay-at-home mom and how many were forced to be a Trad wife because of more powerful man?
I identified as a woman my whole childhood and I think I still can relate to women's problems as I'm not a man.
There are thousands of womem without basic education, without way to get out, without hope and without confidence that they won't be punished.
Mormons, extraordinatory Christians — they all hate woman and her rights. They tell them that she is the weak one, that if she think by herself, she'll be punished. They tell them that their only purpose of life is being a mother, a wife and a man's toy to play with.
That's enough. I'm done with this and if I have to protest about not cancelling my rights then I will. I'm not a woman but I used to be.

review:
oh this was perfect!!
i have some very specific requirements about the mystery/thriller genre (like i said here) and it's quite rare that i get to read a book that fits into them perfectly. penance, however, was so so SO fucking good that i could not put it down. i found myself reaching for it every spare moment possible until i could find out exactly what was happening.
the beginning—"Do you know what happened already? Did you know her? Did you see it on the internet? Did you listen to a podcast? Did the hosts make jokes? Did you see the pictures of the body? Did you look for them?" was enough to make me realise this was going to be a good read.
as someone who has complex feelings about the true crime industry, i found this exploration of it, this particular type of commentary so interesting. not only does it slowly unfold the mystery behind 16 year old joan wilson's murder, it does it in the style of narrative non-fiction. (how much of it is believable, is...debatable)
the sheer amount of research clark has put into it—from the 2010s tumblr culture, to the fascination with true crime communities, and school shooter fandoms—makes it that much more real to read, to the point where i found myself googling things just to make sure they weren't real.
what a fantastic book!! i very much recommend and i'm definitely going to look into reading more of eliza clark's books soon!
