I know william and others often accuse Eliza of her AMBITION, AMBITION, AMBITION, but what I've finally understood about her in the last few eps of Season 3 is that it's not just about her career ambitions- investigating is her PASSION.
it almost feels like something she can't control.
it's a part of her personality, her intellectual desires, her curiosity, her calling. It's not just a professional ambition or goal that she can choose to switch to another field or career.
It makes her a more relatable and likable character when I see that it's not bc she wants to 'get ahead in her career at all costs so she'll take a case even if william asks her not to', but it's more of 'I am so passionate and curious about finding who did this and solving something that puzzles me that it's hard for me to say no if you ask me and it's just unfortunate happenstance that you were slightly involved before.'
I realized this bc I was shipping William/Eliza, and thinking how brilliantly crafted the emotional conflict is between why they would WORK TOGETHER SO WELL, but also why they could potentially ruin their friendship.
Bc I thought, Eliza!!! WHY CANT YALL JUST GET TOGETHER!! Is your ambition really so strong that you would let that get in the way of your relationship with William?
Well, 1) ambition is not a flaw, nor is passion, and it just so happens that the path of her passion intersects, often uncomfortably, with william's values and expectations
and 2) william will need to adjust his expectations and POV if he is to seriously consider Eliza as a romantic partner bc she deserves FULL acceptance emotionally, professionally, and aspirational-ly.

Strange Encounters #4
Today Henry will be traveling to Toronto, but not just any Toronto. Toronto in the 90s.
And who will be hosting him this time?
One Nicolas Knight AKA Sir Knight Nicolas de Brabant
Just a bit of background on Nicolas. He was born in France at around 1200. Life happened and he ended up fighting in the Crusades. The war roughed up his mentals, got him questioning God and all that. This lead him to being seduced into becoming a vampire. He was turned in 1228. Things were going ok for a hot minute, but there's only so much killing (accidental or on purpose) one can do before something's gotta change. He goes through the centuries trying to get right, but then slips, but hey at least he is trying. Finally, by the time of the show, he is in Toronto living his life as a police detective. He aims to not only to pay back humanity for his past actions, he also wants to become human again.
He got vampire married for about a century to the woman who seduced him into vampire life, Janette (She brought him into the fold but didn't turn him.)
But in present day he is working with a doctor in the coroner's office to get back to humanity, even though it pisses off his vampire family.
The doctors name is Natalie. She is in the gif below.
So yeah that's the background on who Henry is going to be hanging around with for the week. Oh by the way...Nicolas is the type of vampire that can't really be around crosses like that...so yeah...
Ok Let's Begin
So to set the stage, Nicolas gets a series of dreams that tell him if an important visitor that will be coming. Nick doesn't doubt that there is something sending him visions. He's been around. The vibes aren't sinister, just an information dump. He gets a visual if Henry.
He even gets a date and time, shown to him via a clock and calendar.
Nick takes the appropriate action to prepare for the arrival. He uses his paid time off for the dates the vision gave him and he even hangs around Janette to get her used to him being around. He isnt going to be drinking from anyone at Janette's club, but he must make sure his guest is provided for.
The date comes and the time approaches. Nick is kinda pissed because he was given damn near every bit of information, but not the where.
He paces his livingroom, wondering about what to do about that as the minutes tick by. He actually got so lost in his pacing that the time came. He stopped his pacing once he heard someone clear their throat.
He turns toward the noise and sees the visitor from his dreams, right there standing in his apartment. It's lucky for Nick that Henry was not wearing his cross around his neck, because that would have been awkward.
They introduce themselves by name. Nick is older by 300 years, but Henry is pretty much royalty and so Nick acts accordingly.
He was going to give Henry the couch, but offers him the bed instead, and Henry happily accepts.
They do the thing where they show each other their vampire faces.
It's cool, they put them away just as quickly as they took them out. Both just wanted to see what's what.
Nick has to lay down the rules. He doesn't know Henry, but again he can read vibes and Henry is pretty chill, but you never know.
He takes Henry to go to the food spot, AKA The Raven.
He sees to it that Janette hooks Henry up with dinner. They hit it off, but Henry is still a little wary. He isn't used to the idea of multiple vampires coexisting in the same territory. And add on top of that, that they are in an alternate Toronto and it takes a moment to get used to. There is no hostility so he goes with the flow, but he is trying to be prepared for anything.
Everything goes well. Henry basically eats and goes. Nick let Janette know they will be back tomorrow. She is super intrigued but will wait for Nicolas to tell her what's going on. Henry is glad that Nick wanted to get out of there because his haunches were up being around so many vampires at once.
The night is still young so they go driving around. Henry tells Nick about 2007 Toronto and they just go to places that Henry hangs around to see what's different and what's the same. Mist of the street names are the same, but all the stores and buildings are different. That's just how they spend their first night. It's pretty easy breezy and entertaining for them both.
Over the course of the week they swap stories. They laugh. They speak full conversations in French, other times in English.
Henry talks about Vicki, her eye problems that took her off the force, and her new life as a Private Investigator.
Nick asks the natural question after seeing Henry all heart eyes while talking about Vicki.
"Are you going to turn her?"
"It would only end in disaster."
Henry just tells Nick everything. First about his turning and the one year time limit. Turning Vicki will not give him a life with her forever.
Nick is shocked. He looks at Henry with a new level of respect, because he can not imagine NOT being able to interact with other vampires. Sure he is trying to become mortal, but that is a choice. He is humbled by the idea of the sheer loneliness Henry must feel.
Yeah there was tense awkward silence for about an hour, but they just went out cruising again after Henry got something to eat, free range. Nick trusted him to not kill, even though he watched him closely.
Henry had a great time, Nick had a great time. They hugged before Henry disappeared. Nick went back to work and everyone commented on how relaxed he looked after his vacation.

“Did you see Miss Scarlet while I was away?” “Yes, sir.” “How did she seem?” “Sir?” “Well, what was her overall mood? Was she happy, sad, pensive?” “She was pleasant and positive as usual. She really does tend to lift one's mood I find. Now, it terms of the murder, I have some preliminary details if you would like hear them?” “Did you get the feeling that she had anything on her mind?” “Miss Scarlet?” “Yes!” “Well, what kind of things do you mean, sir?” “Never mind. Just tell me about the case.” “Yes, sir. Of course, sir. The victim is George Saracen [...]” “And she never mentioned anything about me?” “Who, sir?” “Miss Scarlet!” “Was there something in particular I was supposed to look for? Because I must confess women are still something of a mystery to me.”

Harriet Parker, played by Jessie Cave
Detective Oliver Fitzroy, played by Evan McCabe
Am I the only one who ships these two? They are both sensitive people, loyal to those who treat them with respect and kindness, forced in a life they dislike or at least find themselves ill at ease in (marriage prospects for Hattie, police carreer for Fitzroy) and bullied by overbearing and bossy parents/tutors. I really think they would get along!
Maybe Hattie is asked to help Eliza with a case, and then William gets involved and Fitzroy with him, and then the two of them have to go undercover as a couple... and when the case is closed they find it's hard to stop pretending.
Also, for once their families would probably approve! Mrs. Parker would no doubt consider the son of the Police Commissioner as an acceptable match for her niece, and while I doubt Fitzroy sr. would let his son marry, preferring he focuses on his carreer, he would accept a daughter-in-law belonging to a wealthy and respectable family.
They later marry and have a daughter named Eliza and a son named Duke.

Text ID: Fitzroy and Foster ©1936 Maurice Foster, a shamus with psychogenic amnesia, strictly adheres to reality— until a chance encounter inexplicably manifests a rubberhose cartoon named Fitzroy with his likeness! The two deduce they must solve how Fitzroy (and whoever created her) came to be. End ID.
FITZROY & FOSTER MAKE THEIR GRAND DEBUT!
HERE IT IS FOLKS!!! a shiny post just for the new stand-alone OCs!!! after watching the new trailer for mouse: PI for hire, i had the realization i don’t have any B&W toon OCs… this is my solution! this is also my opportunity to write a more noir-focused story X) there is plenty more art, descriptions of the cast, and a chart under the cut!
also my apologies for the lack of full alt text; i have never done a separate art and text description before, so if anyone has any suggestions, please share :-)
while not obligated i would appreciate reblogs for my troubles!! (silly)
WHAT IS FITZROY & FOSTER?
fitzroy & foster is a great depression-era, noir inspired fiction about a private investigator (shamus) named maurice foster and a rubberhose, b&w toon that looks just like him! along with the motivation from mouse to draw a b&w toon, i wanted to dabble in genre-typical archetypes being interrupted by a character who does NOT fit in (fitzroy). also, as i’ve been experiencing a lot of PTS, i wanted to write a character who’s centered around their trauma.
(the original concept art i did up)
WHAT IS THE STORY?
burnish avenue is the dusky, downtown home of a city’s anticipated activity: construction men, working parents, a moonlit cabaret, and a shamus office on its second floor. that little studio belongs to 34 year old detective foster, a gruff investigator specializing in private cases. he lives with the psychogenic amnesia he received from his unknown past, and due to his memory issues and sensitivity, stays toughened and grounded in reality.
that is, the impossible occurs. a night returning from an investigation ends with an attack by a cartoon wolf, and foster mysteriously wakes up in his office with a cartoon character in tow! after a scuffle of confusion, she introduces himself simply as fitzroy. they both deduce they must work together (despite their flagrant differences) to figure out who created fitzroy, who that wolf was, and how toons are real.
Text ID: Who are Fitzroy and Foster? Maurice Foster is the shamus of Burnish Avenue, as many residents call him. He is gruff and reticent, and due to a secretive past, he holds contempt for, but not limited to, daydreamers, hecklers, clowns, and absurdity. Fitzroy, on the other hand? She's the complete opposite! Where he came from, why he's got Foster's face, and how she's a living, breathing cartoon is an illogical mystery. He is devil-may-care and hates stoicism; all his solutions to problems involve the highest degree of cartoonishness! These two are a match made in heaven, but they both ask the inquiry— why is Fitzroy here, and at that, who created him? End ID.
according to the locals of burnish avenue, foster appeared with the wind some years ago. to this day, the only things people know is his name, his hailing from woodlawn, new york city, and his connections to the burnish cabaret. though he’s known for taking a tough fist to enemies, he is also known for his benignity towards his clients, and is trusted by the avenue.
fitzroy is just as enigmatic. the difference between her and foster, other than being a living, breathing, toon, is his kippy personality! she loves fun, can’t stand being serious for the life of her, and is unnervingly eager to knock down a criminal’s door with some wild weapon he’s made up. he doesn’t know where she came from, either, so she makes the most of it!
fitzroy and foster are two sides of the same coin— if those two sides could staunchly disagree! they may share emotions and the remnants of memories foster has of his past. regardless, to foster, fitzroy’s an unbearably wacky impossibility, and to fitzroy, foster is a killjoy who needs loosening up.
contrarily, they cooperate as well as they can when on a case together. fitzroy comes along for the ride, and though his abrasive, comical methods of investigation may irritate foster, an extra body and friend by his side aren’t taken for granted. (for being a silly cartoon, fitzroy’s weirdly handy with dynamite and pistols.)
eventually, the two will learn to see eye to eye, being foster opens up and fitzroy’s efforts thaw him. but, until then, they butt heads and get no closer to solving the case of the living cartoons.
WHO IS JO/JOSEPHINE?
Text ID: Josephine “Jo” Simon (She/her). End ID.
Text ID: Who is Jo? Josephine "Jo" Simon is one of the satiny performance girls of the Burnish Cabaret. A singer, dancer, and show-woman, she performs every evening below Foster's private office on the second floor. Jo is a debonair dish with the great ability of making all kinds of acquaintances! However, the friend and confidante she deems her closest is Foster. Jo contacted the investigator in early 1932 to help gather enough evidence of her then husband's abuse. She, in return, helped him find an office. In present time, they chat every day, or have a dil-ya-ble if they're busy. When Jo isn't romping with Foster or performing, she's drawing away! End ID.
the hijinks within detective foster’s office aren’t the only focuses of the story. a floor below his private studio is the burnish cabaret, the source of the avenue’s musical nightlife. there, you may see 31 year old josephine simon in the ensemble— but everyone calls the performance girl jo. she is a flirtatious, humorous show-woman who has always loved the arts since her childhood.
jo was drawn to the cabaret when she moved near the avenue with her then husband. as a young child, she was adopted by french immigrants, and eventually left home in search of her identity. the cabaret, which hires and houses chinese-american women, gave her the ability to reconnect with herself. when she escaped and divorced her husband, she fully joined the cabaret, and has lived and performed there to this day.
if you’ve read this far, thank you! while this isn’t replacing crime express in any capacity, and ruth and blu are still my favorites, F&F (as i abbreviate it) is another passion project in the making. keep an eye out for more of the new little guys if you’re interested! X)
as i’ve gotten a couple questions from irl friends about F&F, i will answer the relevant ones here for convenience:
Q: are fitz/fitzroy and foster related/twins/etc?
A: no. they’re not related in any way, despite fitzroy originating from foster and what not. i only clarify this cause they’re shipped in the story and don’t want any misconceptions LOL
Q: is F&F part of the crime express universe/tooniverse?
A: no. this is a separate universe entirely! unlike crime express, which is a toon-human world, this is a world unfamiliar with toons. fitz and the other toons not featured here are outliers.
Q: who is the ‘cartoon wolf’ who attacks foster in the prologue?
A: while i don’t want to spoil the story in the introductory post, i will say that their pseudonym is the big bad wolf, and they are responsible for several denizens of the avenue acting strangely or injured, including foster. their real motivations and identity shall be kept secret for now!
if there are any other specific questions, i will GLADLY answer them. i have a ton of lore i haven’t even remotely touched upon in this post that i shall happily discuss if asked!
border credit goes to @.steddiecameraroll-graphics
#there’s a TON more art i haven’t posted of them but it’s much easier to introduce them instead of trying to explain everything in the tags#they’re all very stereotypical and silly and screwy i love them plenty#oc stuff#fitzroy & foster#my art#artwork#maurice foster#fitzroy the toon#jo simon#1930s#toon#human#rubberhose#noir

A break from Scotland Yard
I spend too much time thinking about Miss Scarlet (It's a mental escape right now!), but I was thinking recently about how the Duke's departure really freed the storyline from Scotland Yard. I hope that this continues into Season 5. (Obvs, I want to see Fitzroy and I even have a soft spot in my heart for Phelps... also I know there is to be a new handsome inspector... but still.) I think it was nice to see our girl out there working without having to simultaneously be battling the misogynist cops who (besides Fitzy) LOVED to take her down a peg. I think instead of bringing a The Duke replacement into the mix, I'd have Miss Scarlet take on mentorship to a scrappy young woman -- Two Lady Detectives!! Can you imagine?!
One thing that also really struck me about the back half of season 4 is that Eliza never had to be rescued -- like in the first 3 seasons, there were often times where William (reluctantly) or Moses (less reluctantly, but also not exactly enthusiastically) would have to save her from some danger she had gotten herself into. Nash never had to save Eliza because he was always there with her! I guess I hope this dynamic continues into season 5. Or, if I had my two lady detectives storyline, I'd have Miss Scarlet doing the rescuing!

4x06: Patrick and Eliza: Game, Set, Match
It's funny because when I got on this ship Season 2, I legitimately didn't believe it had a prayer. The title is Miss Scarlet and the Duke, for heaven's sake. Now though...any ending that isn't Eliza and Patrick is crap. As for the title...the Duke was always in small letters. He's in the background, BEHIND her. He is an important part of her backstory. That doesn't make him her future.
SPOILERS BELOW!
Let's just go over some of the stuff from the episode.
More Partner Power in the cold open. The sound like an old married couple. They prepare to fight the criminal together.
Patrick staring at Eliza center stage taking applause from the men with so much damn pride.
Eliza demonstrating a willingness to share credit with him and the men. She is absorbing Patrick's lessons like a sponge, both there and with Potts later.
He takes her to the race track and she agree with almost no cajoling needed. This is so much cooler than dinner with William, because dinner is a traditional female outing. Patrick is sharing his hobbies, and not giving a damn about societal convention.
Eliza says the thing that has always made Nash such a favorite of mine: He has faith in her when no one does. Not her father, not Ivy, not William.
She is able to stop Patrick from murdering his brother's killer with the simple words, "You are my friend." Eight years of waiting and planning for this moment, and the knowledge he is important to Eliza is enough to stay his hand.
He apologizes to her. She interfered with his plan when he asked her not to. Prevented his revenge and escape to the continent. He is facing jail time. He just saved her life. AND HE APPOLOGIZES TO HER! Try to imagine William doing that. I dare you.
He tries to make HER FEEL BETTER. Once again he is IN JAIL facing serious prison time as a PRIVATE DETECTIVE who has put men in there. Yet, he puts on a brave face and assumes an optimistic air. He uses his old joke about his good looks and her brains. All to sooth her as much as he can, while he can.
Her thinking him a good person is desperately important to him.
He'll "always keep trying." Patrick never quits, his commitment is absolute. That is what Eliza needs, because life with her will never be easy.
She takes his hand. Eliza isn't much of a comforter, and as she looks at him there is grief she can't or won't speak. So instead she take his hand to tell him without words how much she cares.
I'm sorry, but William on his best day, will never top this. Some people might say that the writers have clearly written Patrick off with this storyline. I say however the writers have perfectly tee-ed up the end of the love triangle.
William will return next season to a changed Eliza, one that has learned, thanks to her growth with Patrick, how to function as a PI perfectly well without him. Detective Fitzroy won't need him anymore either, having finally stopped caring about his father and earning the respect of his fellow officers. The icing on the cake though I think will be Patrick's trial.
I suspect Eliza is going to perjure herself to get Patrick released, possibly even blackmail some people. She going to 1) risk her license and 2) offend William. William as a police office takes the law very seriously. Eliza, when push comes to shove, is going to save her partner by any means necessary. Patrick, I further predict will also discourage her from involving herself and risking her future as a detective. More over I think he will try to get William to stop her, hopefully resulting in a frank discussion during which William will release the extent of Patrick's feelings for Eliza.
William will finally realise the truth, that though they may love each other, they don't belong together. To Glasgow or back to America will go William. Patrick will be released and from there onto more Patrick/Eliza investigations.
