years later someone buys the plot, turns on the lights and is suddenly worshipped as a sun god by a bunch of puppets falling apart at the seams
pov you break into the spooky abandoned Playfellow Studios building for shits and giggles
Tumblr media
#lore tidbit! the plot is not available for purchase#the building is only Technically abandoned. its still very much Owned private property!#actually ive been thinking about the Other side of this au. the people's perspective#cause in this au at least they all Knew the puppets were alive#many employees - especially the ones working 'closest' to the puppets - put up a huge fight when the show got canceled#but it was either Disassemble (kill) Them or Lock Them Away#and honestly? killing the neighbors would've been somewhat of a mercy#but the employees had no way of knowing just how Bad things would get#wh lights out au#scribble salad#and i mean. the building's electricity bill remains paid.#the employees that felt really bad kept it paid over the years - devoting a bit of their income each to it#thinking the puppets would a) be awake & b) be able to figure it out#yeah that's actually a lil fun tragic tidbit as well - if any of the puppets had found the breaker....#or found it and Messed with it a lil... flipped the right switch...#they would've gotten the lights back on no problem#but yeah anyway ive been Thinking about the employees' side of things a lot#might tie that in with act two. it'd make sense considering the shit that happens#well either they'd help the puppets out or they'd get shoved into one of the sinkholes by barnaby. so.#bc if we're talkin seriously here. the puppets are more likely to kill a person than worship them for any reason#they'd go full 'THREAT!! THREAT!! ELIMINATE THE THREAT!!! WE'RE NOT LOSING ANYONE ELSE!!!' mode

more and more i become of the opinion my dogs are not reactive to strange dogs but in fact it is unreasonable to expect them to NOT be reactive when the dogs we pass are unwalked, understimulated rural hellions that thrash at the windows of their houses, bark at us and follow us for entire lengths of properties, snarl at us, run at us with tense body language etc.
is this because a neighbor (who does skijor!) moved in half mile down the road from us a half a year ago with the most polite, unreactive dog that my dogs glance calmly at as they walk by? as it is unrestrained (no underground fence) on the property? absolutely is.
is this because a few years ago a neighbor's very nice pitbull mix got out and when it walked up to us with polite calm body language my dogs reacted just as calm and we were able to walk this dog home? absolutely is.
like i am a human woman and have lived in areas with much larger populations than i do now. i remember being followed by strangers, yelled at by strangers in aggressive ways. it made me tense and yes...reactive in those moments to ensure my own safety and needs were met. but was it my fault for having to react that way? To call friends and family and be on the phone any time that i walked alone? to check in when i got to where i was going? to bring pepper spray and iron knuckles to walk less than 10 minutes away from home? I don't think it is. Rather it's the failure that allows that behavior towards me which is at fault. i should not have had to carry those things with me. or call a single soul.
same with my dogs. my dogs aren't reactive, i'm just the only person who walks my damn dogs in my rural neighborhood. even though we can walk for 4+ miles either way on safe dirt roads out of our driveway before we reach pavement. nobody else. walks. their. fucking. dogs. yes i manage my dogs behaviors, it can be embarrassing when they get riled up, but know what? it is not their fault so many other dogs fucking SUCK. and it is not those dogs' fault that they suck either. i encountered more politely behaved dogs when i lived in the suburbs and city than i do now because those dogs at least had some sort of experience with being around other dogs (passing them on the sidewalk even) out of necessity. Rural people truly just throw their dogs outside and expect that to be enough. if you're lucky they install a little underground fence that will maybe keep fido in the yard (like uwu WE don't want to have a look at a fence and we're going to make all our neighbors GUESS if our dog might run into the road at them uwu).

I'm thinking about real machines you can fuck. I don't mean machines that stimulate your erogenous zones. That's been done, and it's neat, but I'm looking for a machine that has erogenous zones. A machine you can interact with erotically, not only sexually.
I have a number of not-quite-satisfactory examples: amp& speakers, train engines, retro consoles, old text-generating ANNs. Witness my descent:
With an amp & speakers, you can hear the interference change as you stroke the contacts — it's the same sensory feedback loop as a human's gasps & whimpers.
I might be into low frequency sounds. which reminds me: train engines. Modern ones — their deep, rumbling hum. I heard it, yes, resonating in my skull, and my hazy thoughts, my rattling perception, and I felt it in my chest as I moved, enraptured, down the platform, ever closer, to the source, passing through the rise and fall of standing waves.
Old game consoles seem to provide interesting glitches — I'm guessing this is because the whole system was so resource-constrained, there's no room for error-checking, and different types of data & code are stored in the same space, so pointing to the wrong location causes the program to start completely misinterpreting the data there (consider the humble missingno). Again, this produces interesting sensory (auditory & visual) experiences — more interesting but less responsive than those from fingering an aux port.
What I'm getting at with the consoles is that I want tech that fails interesting, that will keep going, stumbling over its own compounding errors, flashing pretty colors and letting out beautiful discordant sounds until it finally ceases to function at all.
Then there's text-generating neural nets — I prefer the older ones, where a bit of unexpected input causes them to go completely off the rails and say things like "TWITTER’S H-E-L-T-S WON’T FUNCTION DUE TO OVERLOAD OF BADTOMATE CALLS" or "For a photo or more information, contact the ZOPERIAN at      [email protected]                                            Â"
These neural nets are easy to break in interesting ways with your own clever manipulations, but they don't offer much in the way of sensory experience.
My ball of thoughts. Now to bring them together:
Touching audio contacts has the distinct benefit of connecting physical touch to changes in the machine and its feedback — even slight pressure changes will alter the speakers' buzzing. But all it does is buzz.
Train engines provide a rich sensory experience by resonating with body cavities, but there's not much most people can safely do to interact with the engine in turn.
Retro consoles and old (pre-GPT3 or so) text-generating neural nets generate interesting output when cleverly perturbed. Neural nets are easier to break, but consoles provide a fuller sensory experience.
So I suppose I'm looking for something that will noticeably glitch, but continue to function, with my fingers in its guts, thereby creating an interesting, responsive sensory experience that allows me to see, feel, and hear the effects of my touch.

the relationship rich people have with food is so funny my landlords bought a box of single serving bowls of sticky rice from costco and it's been tantalizing me for months. they forgot about it apparently immediately after purchasing it and when i leave it here they will undoubtedly be surprised by this rice they assumed was mine. and this is a very mild example of things they have bought and left in my fridge (their extra/garage fridge) and instantly forgotten about. at least this one is shelf stable and not rotting meat for me to clean up

Hearing people talk about the need to build more affordable housing in the US makes me physically sick with frustration. The "housing shortage" is artificial. We need redistribution, not continued production. I get that the laws aren't there. They should be. I'm so tired of people pretending there aren't dragon-hoards of vacant housing. We don't need to build more, we need a revolution to let people fill in the spaces which already exist in their area. Not letting someone have a house that's been empty for years, just because they don't have money... I can't understand it. It's the most basic thing. Once you have shelter, you can start to come back to yourself enough to get the rest of your life together. *sigh* I understand that building more houses is necessary under this stupid fucking system, because a revolution is much more difficult and slow, and people need housing ASAP. I just get so mad thinking about how there are physically plenty of spots they could be (There are over 20 vacant homes in the US for each homeless person), and people are using profit and capitalist principles as an excuse to keep them from being there.

I work in property management. Today, someone called to report getting high EMF readings from their HVAC unit, and also that they'd been having trouble with the lights. The overwhelming urge to ask if they'd also experienced any cold spots or if they had any salt handy tells me maybe I should have gone into the business of hunting instead. 😂

New research from North Carolina State University sheds light on how electric fields can be used to alter the thermal properties of ferroelectric materials, allowing engineers to manipulate the flow of heat through the materials. Ferroelectric materials are used in a wide variety of applications, from ultrasound devices to memory storage technologies.
"Our work here is a significant advance because we worked with large sample sizes and provide detailed information on the relationship between the type of electric field being applied to the ferroelectric material and the thermal response in the material," says Jun Liu, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NC State and corresponding author of the study. "In practical terms, this allows users to tune the thermal behavior of the material by applying different electric fields -- using alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) -- which paves the way for developing new techniques for managing the flow of heat through various devices."
For this work, the researchers worked with a ferroelectric material called PMN-PT, which is used in technologies such as sensors, actuators and ultrasound devices. To reflect real-world conditions, the researchers worked with 2.5 mm-thick samples at room temperature.
