Protective childbirth tattoos found on ancient Egyptian mummies
Tumblr media
Lower back tattoos may seem like an early 21st century fad popularized by low-rise-jeans clad celebrities, but new archaeological evidence from Egyptian mummies shows the practice is actually more than three millennia old.
At the New Kingdom site of Deir el-Medina (1550 B.C. to 1070 B.C.), researchers Anne Austin and Marie-Lys Arnette have discovered that tattoos on ancient flesh and tattooed figurines from the site are likely connected with the ancient Egyptian god Bes, who protected women and children, particularly during childbirth. They published their findings last month in the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology.
Deir el-Medina lies on the western bank of the Nile, across from the archaeological site of Luxor. Beginning in 1922, around the same time that King Tut's tomb was found, the site was excavated by a French team. Read more.

Hello!
Maybe you can help with this. I'm a mythology enthusiast and my favorites are egyptian myths so I got a few tattoos about it. Lately I've been really worried that this could actually be appropriative and disrespectful.
I'm wondering if I should cover them up or is it fine for a foreign to have this kind of tatts?
You got these tattoos in the full recognition of what the source materials mean, because of your appreciation of that source material, and that is neither disrespectful nor appropriative. Are you claiming ownership of this culture through your tats? From the way you've phrased this ask, the answer to that is no. I'm also going to go out on a limb here and assume they're not like, wildly inappropriate depictions of Egyptian gods either. So you're fine. Actually you're several steps up from the people wearing ankh pendants just because "spooky goth aesthetic" lmao and even those are largely fine.

^The tattoo I’m wanting to get on either my left middle or pointer finger… maybe even one of my hips, haha. (Probably my finger.)
I really love the ankh symbol. <3

As I continue adding to my prehistoric sleeve, take a look at the most recent addition to my arm – a marine-dwelling ammonite! This group of extinct mollusks died out about 66 million years ago, having lived during the dinosaurs’ heyday of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. They are also excellent index fossils, helping to link the rock layer in which a particular species is found to specific geologic time periods.
The name "ammonite" was inspired by the spiral shape of their shells, which resemble tightly coiled rams' horns. Pliny the Elder called them ammonis cornua ("horns of Ammon") because the Egyptian god Ammon was typically depicted wearing rams' horns. Fossilized ammonites show an enormous range in size, from the very small to the height of a human, but this one fits perfectly on my tricep! 🦑

KUNUNHOTEP
From Kingdom Of The Kaiju
Right Hand to General Ahknunra, Kununhotep is a proud warrior of the Eeet Kemet. The ancient Kaiju ancestors of Egypt. Eager to fight, often letting his pride and underestimating of his enemies get the better of him. But his zeal is well appreciated by Ahknunra, who focuses his brother in arms' spirit as one would a piercing arrow. Precisely harnessing his abilities and using it to attack his opponent's weaknesses.

Don’t think I showed yall this yet but I got a tattoo back in June and it came out pretty great! I got this tattoo because as a pagan whose day job is a teacher and favorite hobbies are reading and creative writing I consider Thoth’s domain to very much dominate my life and work very closely with him in my practice.
