The secret of the screaming mummy – has been solved! At least, in theory! (Not everyone is convinced). The ancient Egyptian woman (whose identity is lost in the mists of time!) was buried an estimated 3,500 years ago, disinterred by archaeologists in 1935 near Luxor – and her tortured expression has baffled experts ever since. (Doesn’t she look like Catherine Deneuve at the end of The Hunger?). As The Guardian explains, received wisdom has been that her eternal silent scream was simply “down to shoddy mummification.” Now, though, new researchers conclude that “the woman’s expression may be down to a rare, immediate form of rigor mortis” called “cadaveric spasm” (which would make a great name for a death metal band). Or, to put it more vividly, “the woman died crying out in agony.” Yikes! Fascinatingly, “the team say the mummy was well preserved, estimating the woman would have stood about 1.55 metres (just over 5ft) tall when alive. The CT scans offered further insights, revealing she died around 48 years old and had mild arthritis – including in her spine.” Her striking mane of long jet-black “hair” was a wig “made from braided date palm fibres and showed traces of juniper and frankincense as well as various minerals – possibly … to stiffen the fibres and give them a youthful black colour.” How stylish! Carry on screaming, lady. Scream and scream again! Pic by Sahar Saleem.

Say hello to the chars of No. 13 Spook Street! I love me some halloween shenanigans so I thought it'd be fun to design up some spooky monster cuties who all live in a big house together as the classic trope so I can draw some fun mini comics of em.
Char summaries under the cut! (There will be other chars in the mix but this'll be the Main Bunch)
Marcus the vampire! Something of a Main character, he's a sweet little guy but can be just a lil bit of a rascal sometimes and doesn't quite know how to People
Selena Whimshearth! She owns a tree that's bigger on the inside and gives everyone a place to stay cause she's a sweetie like that, she's also Marcus' adoptive mother.
Penny Bulla! A big ol werewolf gal who might look scary but is in fact just a rowdy sweetie who happens to land herself in trouble sometimes, kinda like a big sis dynamic with Marcus
Grandmummy! An egyptian mummy who awakened and did some curse-fueld rampaging back in the day, she lives on through the power of pure Spite and often laments on how monster rampaging isn't what it was back in her day
Balthazar Blackstone Von Stoker III! The butler/housekeeper of the place who Selena hired in order to help with the upkeep that comes with many more monsters living in the house. What kind of spook is he? Who knows...
Spookysaurus! The ancient T. Rex ghost tethered to their skull that was unearthed recently. Comes off very scary and intimidating, but is a nice dino with a soft spot for Marcus.

#OTD in 1835 – The coffin of mummy, Takabuti, was opened and unrolled in Belfast Natural History Society’s museum at College Square North.
Takabuti was the first Egyptian mummy to be brought to Ireland. After the Napoleonic Wars there was a brisk trade in Egyptian mummies. She was brought to Belfast in 1834 by Thomas Greg of Ballymenoch House, Holywood, Co Down. Her hieroglyphs were deciphered by a leading Egyptologist from Ireland, Dr Edward Hincks, of Killyleagh, Co Down. The horizontal inscriptions gave the names and titles of…
