With all the things you've posted looking at the mobile suits of various series, I wondered if you had any specific tastes in mecha design. Are there particular details or design cues that you're especially fond of?
@wordsandrobots, I fully expect to follow this up at sone point (and likely run out of pictures/want to ramble even more), so I’m going to pull it out as a proper post:
That is an *excellent* question, actually, since I hadn’t considered my tastes in such a broad scale before (and well-timed too, since I’ve got a post talking about Gusion in the works). It’s why I typically like talking about design series, since I can compare and contrast within that scope.
I typically focus on Gundam, since I generally like it as a series and there’s a massive variety of designs to appreciate, with a broad range. I’m largely influenced by the Anime, model kits and occasionally videogames, though in a lot of cases I can like a character, and that can lead to a greater appreciation of their mobile suit.
Specific design notes…. I tend to notice them more in the context of an artist - I adore a lot of Ippei Gyoubu’s design touches, from the bright colours to the detailed hands to the panel lines and little touches that you’d never notice. Kazuhisa Kondo has the organic shape and uniquely rounded weaponry and it’s styled in such a way as to apprear blurry, almost ephemeral, like you’re glimpsing it through a haze of smoke and gunfire and dirt, while frantically turning to get away, get away from the conflict. And yet the designs are still recognisable, and in a lot of respects draw from contemporary sources.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m similarly fond of Makoto Kobayashi and Kuino Okawara, though I typically struggle to explain how (Makoto Kobayashi tends to have really good composition? I think. So they look simple and detailed all at once, and they’re part of a scene, so it’s what you choose to focus on? And Okawara just makes it look so…. Effortless)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hajime Katoiki I do like as well, I just struggle to nail down why. I suppose it’s because of how clean his designs look.
Tumblr media
Moving away from the preference of artists (and honestly, it’s only that some of their design hallmarks are very distinct), I often have a preference for specific “types” of mobile suit. I talked about this a little in regards to the Code: Fairy designs, but I often find myself drawn to specialist mobile suits over generalist ones. From a modelling perspective, I often like each one to be distinct in a lineup in some way (unless they’re similar models, then I just put them together so the differences show). Often this can just be a distinct weapon, but it’s just as often the form of the mobile suit (the Gusion’s a good example here, since it draws the eye due to its heavyset build, understated colour scheme and giant hammer) or even the colour (see: the Infinite Justice being bright pink). This tends to encompass a lot of close-quarters units (like the Pixy and the Efreets) simply because there’s a lot of ways to do that well. Another reason is that whereas generalist suits tend to show up in large roles throughout the series, specialist ones tend towards “monster-of-the-week”, typically being an obstacle to be defeated or just having one or two cool scenes (like the Efreet Schneid). So I find they stick in my head a lot better.
Tumblr media
I can like a lot of designs from a series as well, but of course I tend to have a lot of different criteria as to what designs I like, depending on the suit’s billing and purpose (what makes a great grunt suit and what makes a great protagonist suit are quite different after all). I do very much like a lot of the UC Grunt suits (though I’ll probably touch on that in more detail at a later point), for example, but I only really like one from Anno Domini, the Tieran (since it looks so much like a walking tank as opposed to the spindly nature of the Flags and Enacts). That said, I don’t think that the Flags, Enacts and GN-X’s are bad designs, they’re just not really the sort of thing I like.
In fact, I reckon that’s why I’m particularly fond of Iron-Blooded Orphans’ Aesthetics, since a lot of the units from that series would be close-quarters specialists in any other series. But because melee is so common in Post Disaster, virtually everything carries a nice solid sharp stick. The only exceptions I can think of are Gusion Rebake (which is more of an all-rounder), Flauros (and even that has hatchets that leave cqc a viable option) and Dainsleif Grazes (which only have one arm, so….).

This one's hot off the presses so to speak! I just finished it the other day. You know it's actually a bit of work between finishing the build, and then cleaning up sprue mess & extra pieces after the build, before photographing. Photographing these is Work! But anyway let's talk about this build. I panel lined it as I built it. Just simple stuff really. Over the course of a few days. It was a relatively simple build, but like many of the kits i seem to have done lately, it has some weird stickers! Like the central thruster on its backpack and some of the orange bits on its feet and codpiece. You think this guy has enough knives?? Actually, they're called "heat darts" which i guess is why the ones for active usage are clear orange plastic. Cuz they're hot. I used EX Gundam Marker Silver (XGM02 specifically) for the heat darts. This is a decent quality build. THe way the darts slot into the holes is a nice "keyed" fit but i'm not sure if the friction is that strong? It mostly works okay if you don't jostle it too much. The bazooka is kind of a weird inclusion but it came with one. The monoeye in the head is actually kinda flimsy, it doesn't really stay in the direction you want it to face. Luckily i can use some tweezers to bump it into place, but just a little note for those who build this kit after me. There's definitely some parts of this that could use some paint. For example, the hilts on the darts are rendered in the lighter purple color in all the marketting images but they printed it with the dark purple plastic. No idea why they made that choice. And of course you could always fuck around with the nozzles in the backpack. Anyway, there's 14 darts stuck all over this guy's armor and 2 for his hands; the ones for his hands don't have any obvious "storage" location unfortunately. It's probably gonna be the bazooka going into part storage, but at least i captured this image!
stats for nerds:
Tumblr media
The censored spot is the name of the friend who gave this kit to me! This was one of five kits i received from a friend who said his backlog was too large and i was like "I could take some lmao" and he decided "sure", so i got five kits. I'll probably post about most of the others eventually too!

One of my old kits I built. The HG 144 Efreet Schneid. It was a awesome build and I loved doing the paint on it. I don't do 144 scales anymore because I'm so accustomed to the MG kits.

Man, the one thing that got me sad about the fat positive stuff in the latest years is it's like tummy and love handles as stuff that's traditionally underloved. But y'know what is actually like, never given the time of day in this argument? Double chins and flabby arms. Wheres the love for girls with those, huh? Or wide calves? Like, don't get me wrong tummy is good but it flows right into the va va voom sorta model of body attractiveness if you get what i mean. (Like BBW or things like that is already a porn catagory)
Anyway, please appreciate double chins and flabby arms.

So, the Efreet, the Phantom Machine, the Production Model That Never Was, and one of my favorite Mobile Suits in Gundam, has the distinction of being one of the most stubborn figures in the history of the Universal Century.
To contextualize you, allow me to introduce our guest of honor:
Tumblr media
This good lad right here is the MS-08TX Efreet. Attentive ace detectives and prodigy engineers will have noticed something: It’s basically a cross between a Gouf and a Dom. It was, indeed, produced before the Dom, perhaps even concurrently during its latter phases, and was slated to be the next mass production model after the Gouf didn’t really take off, but expensive production costs made Zeon favor the cheaper and very powerful Dom instead, and thus the Dom, with its genius design involving heavy armor and multiple-layered folds between which auxiliary thrusters were placed to make it both tough and very fast, became the next main mass production model. Only eight Efreets were ever made. It’s standard equipment was a Shotgun, uncommon weapon for MSes, also very uncommon in how it murdered the utter shit out of everything with it. Turns out expensive units are strong and can wreck shit.
However, this didn’t mean the Efreet wasn’t strong. The Efreet was strong. Very strong. It was too expensive to properly mass produce, which should tell you everything about how over-engineered it was. This is nothing uncommon in the Universal Century, but the Efreet has a special distinction of being a unit that Never God Damn Dies for good.
Its first appearance is in the SNES game, Mobile Suit Gundam: Cross Dimension 0079, as the final boss, in which the player, using the Gundam Pixie, must defeat it in single, climatic combat.
The base Efreet is one thing, but its when the spicy models comes out that things Get Real: Meet the [EXAM] Efreet Custom.
Tumblr media
NOW THIS IS WHERE THE SPICE STARTS STINGING THE TONGUE. Gone are the forearm protectors and the base shoulders, replaced with arm-mounted grenade launchers and Bigger, Warhammer Approved shoulders. Instead of one Heat Sword, it packs two, and each leg is now equipped with a 6-tube missile launcher. The most important factor, however, is that it is equipped with the EXAM System, which, I shit you not, calls upon the power of a tortured trapped psychic soul in order to increase response speed in the pilot, and also to just be atrocious in general because you literally cannot make a single cool weapon in the Universal Century without it having accounted for at least ten skeletons in your ever-growing closet of war crimes. Like, ok, if we need help with our attention span, we take Ritalin, but in the UC, you just trap the soul of an unwilling servant into your big death machine and call it a day. We went from a shotgun-totting good lad to a walking abomination. Neat.
So how do you possibly up the ante? How do you outdo a machine that went from “military equipment” to “crimes against humanity and the cycle of life and death” in five seconds flat? THE ANSWER: THE BIGGEST AXE SCIENCE CAN MUSTER:
Tumblr media
ONCE UPON A TIME, A MAN NAMED DOUG SCHNEID TOOK ONE OF THE REMAINING EFREET UNITS, AND FOUND IT LACKING. “HMMM. NO... I DON’T THINK THIS HAS ENOUGH OOMPH...” and so he had THE BIGGEST AXE (well, 2nd biggest) commissioned and that’s how the Efreet (DS) was born. It’s true that dark sorcery can solve most problems in life, but A Huge Fuckoff Science Axe can solve ALL problems in life, no exceptions, so why go over the trouble of tampering with the supernatural when you can just practice crude neurosurgery on everyone on the go? Doug Schneid knew what the fuck was up.
And where do you go from here? We already have en over-engineered shotgun lad, we have a dual wielding machine packing enough explosives to level Australia all over again and that is literally powered by a forsaken soul, we have a machine that has an axe so big it just cuts suits in two, no matter what fancy shield or force field you bring to the game. How do you improve on this? Has the Efreet reached the cusp of its potential?
No. The answer is in front of you: If the Efreet Custom is powered by a ghost, then the next Efreet should just become a ghost.
Tumblr media
MEET THE EFREET NACHT.
The Nacht employs a very forward thinking philosophy of skipping the middleman, that is, the ghost, to just reach the endgame by its own merit, also because trapping tortured souls in machines is expensive and upsets your coworkers: Just build your own damn ghost.
Equipped with the strongest freaking stealth modules of the era, the Efreet Nacht is simply undetectable. It can be right in front of you, mere steps away, and you sensors are simply not gonna pick it up. Not just because it has Every Stealth Module ever inside the chasis, but also because it’s basically a walking ECM Hive: Your sensors cannot pick up hostile vehicles when your sensors have been fried to a crisp, which is exactly what this cheesy Nacho does just by existing in your general direction, it outright kills and murders your sensors. What do you even do at that point? This thing gets close to you and suddenly your screen goes static and you start hearing crackling white noise. The very next second, it runs you through not with a Heat Sword or a Beam Saber, but with a Cold Blade, which is basically a sword made of Electronic Warfare some-fucking-how because if it cuts your machine, it just fucking sends its internal machinery and AI into a frenzy. This bitch literally Y2Ks your giant robot with its sword. And if it can’t reach you with its sword? It’s got Throwing Y2K Knives, so even if you try to run away from it, you WILL bluescreen.
god DAMN.
What I’m trying to say is that it’s a fucking fortune they didn’t mass produce this thing because if a limited run of a Shotgun Fun Lad ended in a giant robot that deletes your System32 every time it sneezes at you, imagine what kind of madness would’ve erupted if it had become a widespread model. On one hand, it’s a shame there’s only eight Efreet units, but at the same time, we’re lucky there only ever were eight Efreet units. Despite being produced in 0079, they continuously survived battle after battle, even if their pilots didn’t, and we even see one of them in 0096, during Unicorn. Three whole wars outdated and these bad boys still out there causing trouble and stopping System from your Task Manager. That’s why I like the Efreet line so much: It’s absolutely god damn ludicrous, but it works out.
