It’s funny that a bunch of my coworkers older than me don’t know how to do basic stuff on computers and I also know my future coworkers younger than me (hell, even half my classmates in college) who were raised on phone apps won’t know how to do basic stuff on computers. So somehow me having the understanding of file trees, where our cloud saves are located, basic functions of Microsoft office programs, how to change settings, basic troubleshooting, and the ability to look things up if I don’t know how to do them apparently puts me above most people in my workplace when it comes to technology. And by “funny” I meant very frustrating

Hearing about that new DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) being headed up by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, it makes me wonder how is it different from the GAO?

The GAO (Government Accountability Office) is supposed to try and keep the government accountable and efficient. They give advice to various government agencies to improve their operations, but they rarely take any of it. The only time I can think of some of the GAO's advice being taken was by the IRS but even then, they only followed some of their recommendations. And then you get the Pentagon, which is a blackhole were money vanishes, and they never follow the GAO's recommendations to the point the GAO is exhausted by it.

It makes me wonder how the DOGE will be different, or will it just be redundant?

Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, Donald Trump said on Tuesday. Despite the name, the department will not be a government agency. Trump said in a statement that Musk and Ramaswamy will work from outside government to offer the White House “advice and guidance” and will partner with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before.” He added that the move would shock government systems. Trump said the duo “will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies”.

Posting on X, the social media platform he owns, Musk pledged to document all actions of the department online for “maximum transparency”. “Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know!” he said, while also promise to keep “a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars”. Ramaswamy also responded to the announcement of his appointment on X. “We will not go gently, @elonmusk”, he said, adding an American flag emoji. It is not clear how the organization will operate. It could come under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which dictates how external groups that advise the government must operate and be accountable to the public.

Donald Trump has selected right-wing toadies Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-head up the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that is an unofficial committee.
