maybe crystal keeps her promise after niko dies. she texts niko everyday, updates about her life, that time that charles somehow managed to trip and absolutely eat it despite the fact that he can phase through walls, the fact that edwin watches scooby doo when they're not working on a case, and that she's trying to right every wrong she made in the past and she knows that niko would be proud of her.

niko can see all of the messages, but the shitty reception in her igloo won't let her send any hearts back, and it makes her so mad.

AU where Edwin knows he's gay from the start would be fire me thinks.

Imagine if he thinks he deserved Hell but still wants to escape and feel so wrong and selfish for it. So he never tells Charles what actually happened between 1916-1989, Charles only knows whatever happened was very bad no good. Edwin would be horribly, painfully aware that he was falling for Charles. But that's wrong, isn't it? Boys can't like boys.

So he tries so hard to ignore it, tamp it down. He can't let Charles know. If he knows then he'll know why he's avoiding the afterlife, that he deserves to go to Hell.

Charles knows Edwin is scared of Death and the afterlife, he assumes that something happened from 1916-1989 that convinced Edwin he was damned but there's just no damn way someone as good as Edwin deserves Hell. But, selfishly, he never tries to convince Edwin to go. To leave for his beautiful afterlife.

Then Port Townsend happens.

Crystal is no idiot, she can tell Edwin's jealous from the start. She can tell Charles thinks it's because they're best friends, she can tell it's because Edwin's in love. That doesn't stop her though, she deserves one good thing after everything, doesn't she?

(I think Cat King would go very similar to canon, but it's less of "I'm not gay" and more of "I know what I am but these urges aren't okay".)

Niko loves love, she can tell Edwin loves Charles. She can tell Edwin doesn't know it's okay. Niko helps him through it, becomes his confidant, the first person he confesses everything to. I think they would have a huge conversation that ends in them both crying -- Edwin bemoaning his unrequited love, Niko mourning for him -- and cuddled up watching Scooby-Doo. (The sprites get teary eyed too but still mock them, Niko calls them out and they deny it. "It's dusty as shit in this old ass glass!" "Yeah, we're getting fucking pick eye in here!" "When's the last time you even washed this shit-ass jar?")

It all comes to a head with the Night Nurse. We all know her spiel, "I'm taking Edwin back to Hell and Charles to get processed." But Charles doesn't know Edwin's been processed. Charles doesn't know Edwin's assigned to Hell.

Niko is empathetic, not forcing Edwin to explain but not once thinking he did anything to deserve it. Crystal is up in arms, demanding to know what he did to deserve Hell, demanding to know why he hid it from Charles. Charles is confused, conflicted. Edwin's his best mate! There's no way he deserves Hell! But... but why didn't he tell Charles? Edwin is overwhelmed and panicked and no, no, no! Charles was never supposed to know!

Now, listen. Niko isn't one for confrontation, she doesn't like to fight. But hearing Crystal rip into an unresponsive Edwin while Charles lingers unsure on the back has her heart breaking, has her head hurting. So she steps in, shouts at them to stop, that they'll talk tomorrow when they've cooled off. And drags Edwin off to her room for the night. She doesn't demand answers and he doesn't give them.

The next day, everyone's off. The tension is high and only building. Crystal keeps sending Edwin pointed comments and Edwin is actively ignoring her existence. Charles is conflicted, caught between Crystal and Edwin; taking both their sides without taking either. And Niko doesn't know how to soothe any of it, so she sticks close to Edwin.

Eventually the four are leaving the graveyard, Crystal and Charles arguing when she rounds on Edwin. "And you! Don't think I forgot about you!" Niko tries to step in and stop it like she did last time but Edwin's tired, he's had enough, he breaks. "I was sacrificed! I was sacrificed and spent seventy-three gruelling years fighting to escape! There, happy? Might we please move on now?"

He storms past them all and for the first time since this dispute started, Niko is angry. She tells Crystal that wasn't okay, that it was cruel. And takes off after Edwin, leaving Charles and Crystal standing uselessly.

"I didn't know..." Neither remember who said that.

i do genuinely think that "maybe that's why I like her so much" is one of THE most insane lines in the show.

like- Charles, honey, I hate to be rude, but what the FUCK did you mean by this? you're talking about a girl, who you obviously are at least a little romantically interested in, your friend makes a snide comment about her, and YOU SAY, 'hmm, kinda like you, yeah? see, that's why I like her.' I just. WHAT?

seriously every time I hear this line I start cackling because there is literally no normal explanation behind telling you're best MALE friend (who believes you to be straight) that the reason you have a crush on this girl is because she is like him. what the fuck, Charles. what. the fuck.

I really do think a lot on Edwin’s very serious declaration of never letting the two of them get separated after Charles shows concern about it in episode 1, and it’s abundantly clear that he’s just as protective of Charles as Charles is of him. However, due to the kinds of situations they ended up in during season 1, Edwin fell a lot more into the role of the one who needed protecting, which is why I really badly want to see Edwin have a moment in season 2 where he protects Charles or saves them from being separated again, through clever words maybe, or his spell books.

I just desperately want some kind of follow through on the ferventness of his “I will never let that happen” because with the conviction of that line, god I believe it, but do I ever really want to see it too

Charles is moaning to Crystal because “Why me? He could have anyone, why would he want me?” and Crystal fails badly at muffling a snort. “He could have - ? Charles, you are deeply delusional. Sweet, but delusional.”

Edwin rarely initiates touch. He touches people when that are in danger or in response to the other person touching him first, but barely never does he initiate touch out of care for someone. That's what makes this scenes so important to me:

And then there's Charles, who always initiates that constant casual and cozy contact they have. So the few times Edwin is the one starting it seem so much more powerful to me now...

And for those of you wondering about Crystal, he does touch her a few times (he touches her the most out of the others, apart from Charles), but just mainly because they are on a case and she has a life to lose or she is the one touching him, so... I didn't add her... I'm sorry Crystal, Edwin just needs a bit more time to show he cares about you in that way.

i get such a sense of primal envy when looking at edwin’s clothes up close because god you can just tell his coat is real wool and made to last and not cheap flimsy mass produced garbage and auggagghhhh that was just STANDARD in his time. by no means am i saying i was #borninthewronggeneration because i like having vaccines and household appliances but. man. to have a personally-tailored coat like that that’d last for years and years……. and fabrics of fine thread-dense quality………. if only

If you haven’t already heard the news, Dead Boy Detectives was recently canceled.

I’m absolutely gutted at the fact that Netflix cut this show short, but as hurt and angry as I am, I hold just as much gratitude in my heart. I realize now, just how lucky I am to have had a show like this

This show has helped me in more ways than I can count, and I am truly unable to express how grateful I am to have something like this. I am grateful to have been in — and continue to be in because trust me, I’m not going anywhere — such a vibrant, welcoming, ridiculously talented fandom. I am grateful for each and every one of the actors and show writers who helped make this happen; grateful for Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz and Jayden Revri and George Rexstrew and Kassius Nelson and Yuyu Kitamura and all the wonderful cast and crew of Dead Boy Detectives. I’m grateful for all of the dedicated fans for making things like Payneland Week happen. And I am grateful for all of amazing gay people behind my screen who’ve allowed me to scream with them from the rooftops about how great this show is.

Edwin and Charles will still live in our hearts forever. As long as the red earth rolls... ❤️💙

So are we gonna talk about how it has been established that a combination of remorse and forgiveness can save someone from hell?

And, banking off of that, if Charles' dad passes away he could potentially have the power to decide wether he gets sent to hell or not.

Prior to being there himself I think he would never have forgiven him. However, after going through hell and seeing what it does to people I'd imagine someone as empathetic as him would feel like nobody deserves an eternity of that. It would be a very interesting idea to explore, the state of his trauma after 30+ years with the guilt he might feel (entirely unjustified as it may be) over having the option to save anyone from Hell and choosing not to. Especially if in this scenario his father is incredibly remorseful and begs for forgiveness.

It would be really interesting to get a parallel to the scene with Edwin and Simon, however it may play out.
