It's never too late to fill in the gaps in your education
By  NIRANJAN SHRESTHA 10:34 PM EST, February 13, 2025
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Sushila Gautam, 77, checks her smartwatch, a gift from her son living in the United States, to see if she should leave for her reading and writing lessons.
“At home, I get bored when my son and daughter-in-law go to work and grandchildren are at school. I want something to do,” she says with a smile.
When Sushila was young, girls in her village weren’t sent to school.

For about a year now, she has been going for free lessons near her home on the outskirts of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, at the Ujyalo Community Learning Center. The center was set up three years ago by the local council to provide basic education to women like her.
“Now, I finally have the chance,” says Sushila.
She can now read signs in English and Nepalese, is able to check her heart rate on a smartwatch, and use a smartphone. But the skill she is most proud of is her ability to sign her name on official documents. Previously, she had to put thumbprints.

Bimala Maharjan Bhandari, who runs the center, says she had difficulties at first to convince women to join.
“I had to tell them that being able to read phone messages, product labels and signing documents can benefit the whole family,” Bhandari said.

Women sit at desks reading aloud from their Nepali language textbooks, following their instructor. Some write down simple sentences in their notebooks. During a break, they file out of the classroom to play soccer on a small hard court.
Bhandari believes that the center encourages friendship and physical well-being among the learners, creating a supportive environment for personal and collective growth.

Among the older students is 88-year-old Thuli Thapa Magar, who has spent her entire life as a homemaker. She, like Sushila, never went to school and was illiterate before joining the center.
She is proud of the fact that she is finally learning.

"Be sure to double-check places advertising pregnancy tests for free: abortion or public health clinics often offer free testing, but CPCs often do too, to get people to come to them, and to fool people into thinking they are qualified healthcare providers (they're not).
Crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) are fake clinics run by anti-abortion organizations or individuals whose only aim is to convince anyone who comes in for a test not to terminate, often by any means available to them, including with intentional misinformation or emotional bullying or abuse. Because those who run them rarely have education, expertise or equipment needed to provide pregnancy care, even for those who want to choose to remain pregnant, CPCs aren't a good place to go. Sometimes they even don't use real tests for pregnancy, so even if a CPC seems like the only way you can find a way to test for pregnancy, know that they aren't even a reliable place to just get tested.
To do your best to be sure that's not where you're going to test, you can call into your local hospital, or ask a general doctor or clinic, for options for free pregnancy testing from a qualified healthcare provider, or check with friends to see if anyone's gone to where you're going."

I found out the Rabbids came from Rayman and like it's actually a good franchise ? I knew it existed cause of the Captain Laserhawk stuff a year ago, which I thought was cool .
But I played Rayman Origins on the 3ds and it's a very pretty game and nice fast paced platformer makes me feel more skilled than I am. I die a lot cause the only other platformer I've ever played was Kirby Triple Deluxe and I might be too used to that game's mechanics

2025 Supported Org: Disability Law United
Nearly all of America’s systems – from education to healthcare to public transit – are more difficult to navigate for persons with disabilities. Although the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 established a new standard of protection and support for disabled people in many spheres of public and civic life, the harsh reality is that most of these systems fall far short of what the law requires of them in terms of accommodating and supporting disabled people. The existing problems have been compounded by the United States’ widespread return to pre-COVID protocols and practices, leaving anyone who is unusually vulnerable to COVID or its aftereffects with fewer pathways through public life.
Tumblr media
Disability Law United (formerly The Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center) is a nonprofit legal organization that fights for liberation and equity through the lens of intersectional disability justice. Their work is informed by grassroots movements for systemic change and centers the concerns and goals of people with disabilities who are confronting barriers to accessing programs and services and resisting oppressive legal systems in the United States.
Disability Law United’s legal expertise in the disability-rights frameworks of the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act allows them to move the dial for intersectional disability justice across a variety of systems that deny the humanity, dignity, and agency of disabled people. They further their aims through a combination of public education, coalition and policy work, systemic-change litigation, direct legal services, and technical assistance to movement leaders and community-based partners, strengthening social movements and upholding human rights.
They focus on supporting and defending disabled people who are experiencing discrimination and exclusion at the intersection of other systems of harm. Their work encompasses improving access to public services and spaces, disaster and environmental justice, immigration, and incarceration and policing.
You can support Disability Law United as a creator in the 2025 FTH auction (or as a bidder, when the time comes to donate for the auctions you’ve won.)

TIANJIN BINHAI LIBRARY
MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) have completed Tianjin Binhai Library as part of a larger masterplan to provide a cultural district for the city. The 33,700m2 cultural centre featuring a luminous spherical auditorium and floor-to-ceiling cascading bookcases functions not only as an education centre but as a social space and connector from the park into the cultural district.

Truly some evil heinous shit right here
Tumblr media
Cheryl Hensley, a librarian in Houston, was excited for the start of school. A veteran of four decades in the city’s public school system, she had stocked her library at Lockhart Elementary, a mostly Black school, with $40,000 in new books, and won a statewide award for her work.
Then, late last month, Ms. Hensley, 62, was told she was no longer needed: The school’s library would be one of dozens turned into multipurpose computer rooms and used, in part, for discipline.
The decision to fire librarians and effectively close libraries in some of the city’s poorest schools has been the most contentious yet made by a new set of Houston public school leaders who were imposed on the district and its 187,000 mostly Black and Hispanic students this year by the administration of Gov. Greg Abbott.

deeply disturbed atm by the fact that so many european leftist critiques of european liberalism and the eu seem to have veered straight past reasonable anti capitalist readings on the problems with economic liberalism etc into straight up distrust and dislike of the "neoliberal values" of basic social democracy like support for secularism, universal education, feminism, abortion, and gay rights, or else some kind of hatred of centrism and center leftism that's deeper than a distrust of local conservatives
idk everything from the list of unhinged leftist takes i've seen on samuel paty's death straight to the fact i just read an article in a book about general hip hop cultures that argued that young goyische german men (of both turkish and white background) describing themselves as hitler in a cool way in modern german gangster rap isn't some kind of antisemitic support for white nationalism but a "subversive challenge" to the "norms of the German state" or something
