Okay so this unsupportive person in my life (who will remain anonymous) was talking to me (I’m nb but I’m afab and like girls so ppl think I’m gay) and she was like, “You’re NOT gay! Everyone likes girls better than boys! Everyone thinks girls are prettier than boys and would prefer to be with them!” 

At first I was gonna make a post about how funny this was, since I’m not sure if she’s as straight as she thinks she is, but as I was writing this, it occurred to me just how sad this is. 

This woman has been so filled with internalized homophobia and has been so unexposed to the possibilities that she hasn’t even questioned her own sexuality. Regardless of what her sexuality actually is, the fact that she hasn’t been able to remotely consider the possibility that she might not be straight. 

She’s certainly not the only person who has fallen into this trap. How many lives were unfulfilled, how much happiness squandered, how many incomplete existences because people don’t really know what it means to be gay or bi or pan or ace or trans or nonbinary or any other gender/sexuality? 

This is why it’s so important to educate people on this stuff. Not only will it help them to better understand others, but it can help us to better understand ourselves. Before I knew what nonbinary was, I was in a lot of pain that there seemed to be no answer to. I wasn’t taught anything about gender identity in school, and certainly not by my parents, but by exploring books and the internet, I found a word for who I was, and it made me feel so much better.

This is why it’s so important to educate people on this stuff. Not only will it help them to better understand others, but it can help us to better understand ourselves. This is especially true for people in unsupportive households, who might not ever be exposed to this stuff otherwise.
