Steamy Saturday
". . . she found out she had to have special clearance from the White House and the State Department."
"Why was her patient so hush-hush he could be referred to only as Mister X?"
"This was a man who had terrorized the White House, a man even the President was afraid of . . . ."
Nurse Lily and Mister X by Diane Frazer, published in New York by Pocket Books in 1961, has more intrigue than steam, but with its snappy noir dialogue and plot, you almost forget this is a nurse romance novel. There's the brilliant and cantankerous British diplomat and master international negotiator Sir Edgar; the self-confident and stunningly gorgeous nurse Lily Sorenson; and the dashing young newspaper reporter Andrew Carlton who is smitten by Nurse Lily, and she with him, but as a professional journalist doggedly pursues the mystery of the secret patient at the Manhattan hospital -- even if it means compromising his budding relationship with Lily.
Along the way, there is subterfuge and twists. Will Sir Edgar be found out and compromised before he is able to negotiate a major treaty that may affect global politics for generations? Will Andrew nail the scoop of his career? More importantly, can Lily and Andrew's romance survive it all? This novel is such a decent read, that for once we will not reveal the outcome.
Diane Frazer is the pseudonym for Dorothy Fletcher who published numerous nurse romances under her pen name. We couldn't find out much about Fletcher, but we do know that the cover art is by Jerry Allison, the prolific illustrator of pulp novel covers, especially hard-boiled detective novels.

You’re the Worst: Edgar Quintero - Type 9w1
Tumblr media
Edgar is kind, calm and optimistic. He struggles with his PTSD from when he was in the war and can come across as overly anxious as a result.
At his best, Edgar is a kind and loyal friend. He begins to become more driven and starts to try and make a life for himself outside of the group. Edgar grows more confident and begins to have more agency. He begins to cope better with his PTSD after hitting rock bottom as he starts to take a more active role in his recovery.
At his worst, Edgar overcompensates for others. He stops taking his various medications because he thinks he needs to for the sake of his relationship with Dorothy. When Edgar is off his meds, his PTSD symptoms are heightened and we see that he becomes very paranoid, suspicious and anxious about everything.
Edgar is a generally kind and calm person. He is non-confrontational and has trouble voicing his opinion. Oftentimes, he will want to tell Jimmy something and will get spoken over. Edgar will often wrestle with the possibility of uncomfortable conversations and it takes a lot of effort for him to speak up.
Edgar struggles with PTSD from when he was in the war and is often overtly anxious as a result. He will be hyper vigilant and is often paranoid about what might happen. In the earlier seasons, Edgar was self-medicating and had issues with heroin abuse as a coping mechanism.
Edgar has trouble living in the moment and dealing with his anxiety so he begins to attend an improv comedy class to try and combat this. With improv comedy, Edgar finds something he is passionate about. He feels like he has finally found something he is good at and wants to share it with his friends. Edgar gets upset when nobody shows up at his comedy show, because he feels like nobody is noticing him or caring about what’s important to him.
Tumblr media
Edgar is slow to anger and will often forgive people easily. Jimmy often treats Edgar quite poorly and uses him for housework. He is also often quite dismissive of Edgar’s feelings and problems. Despite this, Edgar cherishes his friendship with Jimmy and quickly forgives his mistakes. Sometimes, this almost reads to me as Edgar making excuses for the way he is treated by Jimmy and minimising his own feelings for the sake of his friendship with Jimmy.
Edgar has a tendency to not really know what he wants and can be easily led along as a result. When Dorothy takes him to an apartment that she can’t afford, he doesn’t hesitate to say they will move in together. However, when a drunk Jimmy tells him he has been manipulated he fights with Dorothy and changes his stance on moving in. It appears that Edgar was never really ready to move in and went with the flow of the situation. When he was pushed in another direction, his opinion quickly changed despite seemingly being sure at the time of what he had wanted.
Edgar has a wing 1 as he is more reserved and less likely to express his emotions than a wing 8 would be.
Tri-type: 9w1 - 6w7 - 2w1
Some quotes and traits to describe Edgar’s traits and motivations:
“I didn't know it was a school.”
Tow Truck Driver: “Suicidal thoughts? You know the stats? 22 every day. Though, in truth, there are some Vietnam dudes that are jacking up our numbers, but still.” Edgar: “I thought starting today, things would get better. But they don't give a s**t.” Tow Truck Driver: “Here's what you got to understand. They're not evil. None of 'em are. The military's job is to sand down our humanity just enough to where we can take a life. That's it. Afterwards, some totally separate branch gets to deal with all these purposely broken motherfuckers. Not only is that impossible with the resources, that's just impossible, period.” Edgar: “Yeah, well, then, what are we supposed to do?” Tow Truck Driver: “Not wait for someone to help you. Figure out what works. My man Carter, he hunts all the time. This big chopper pilot I know, he goes to yoga. And we make fun of him, but it seems to work. Jorge hikes the PCT once a year. I got this companion dog. I wanted a big, mean dude, but the organisation gave me this little scrub. He saved my life, this guy. This other bro I know locks himself in his bedroom and stabs his closet door. I mean, he's not getting his deposit back, but once the rage passes, he's fine. I know you don't want to hear this, but the minute you stop looking for someone else to cure you, maybe you start living again.”
Edgar: “Yes, well, uh, we all know that I'm taking the prescribed steps to overcome the very common issues caused by combat situations.” Gretchen: “Ugh! We know. You were in a war. Get over it! And while you're at it, get over Lindsay. Have enough self-respect not to focus on someone who's still clearly obsessed with her lame, soft ex-husband.”
Edgar: “Whose house is this?” Paul: “My biking buddy Conner, his wife Mimi died recently.” Edgar: “What happened?” Paul: “Recumbant bikes have many good qualities but sometimes they're hard to see from up high. The driver of the semi never knew she was there, poor thing was dragged three miles. I've never seen Conner pedal so fast. He kept motioning frantically for the truck to stop. But the driver thought he wanted him honk. She was actually alive until the semi got on the freeway.” Edgar: “Well that's the most terrible thing...” Paul: “Sad thing is Mimi didn't want to go out that day because her safety flag had been stolen outside the junior high but Conner told her that they could stop at the bike store after they raced to Starbucks for tea.” Edgar: Please give my condolences to Conner... Paul: “The really sad thing, is that Conner wanted to let Mimi win, because her impetigo had been flaring up again, that's the only reason she reached the intersection first.” Edgar: “I don't really need to hear...” Paul: “The extra sad thing? The whole time she was being dragged towards the on-ramp she was texting Conner, her phone still accessible in its holder on the handlebars. I saw the texts...they're quite chilling.”

vampyr for the fandom thing?
Favorite Male Character: Jonathan Reid – I think he’s just a brilliant characterFavorite Female Character: Dorothy Crane – I was so mad with myself when I mesmerized her on my first playthrough, argh!Least Favorite Character: Aloysius Dawson – the number of unsavory people that exist in the game is ridiculous, but for the major characters, he is definitely the literal worst.Favorite Ship: Sabrina Cavendish x Tom Watts – I think they’re the couple that deserve happiness most in the game (and for the record I don’t ship Reid with anybody).Favorite Friendship: Dr. Swansea and Reid, although by the end of the game I saw Edgar less as a friend and more as someone who needs to get whacked upside the head twenty times a day.Favorite Quote:  Louise Teasdale’s question, “Can vampires even f**k, doctor?” followed by mortified stuttering from Dr. Reid.Worst Character Death (if any): unintentionally and indirectly killing Dorothy Crane via mesmerizing her This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: ngl chowing down on Cadogan Bates, Father Whitaker, and Aloysius Dawson was immensely satisfying.Saddest Moment: Mary Reid’s whole story arc ... someone please give me a Mary Lives AUFavorite Location: Pembroke Hospital, mostly because of the music is so bittersweet and weirdly relaxing.

Hey but sorry to bother u but could give me those book recs? Relying on u girl
of course!! sorry bout the long wait, dear x
you said you preferred trilogies or series’ (which i don’t read much of tbh) so here are a few of my favorites: (( some of these will have full on summaries and some… not so much, i got lazy lol ))
The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout : Meet Katy and Daemon! Katy is a funny, down-to-earth book blogger who has just moved to West Virginia. And Daemon? Well, he’s her hot and arrogant next-door neighbor. He’s also an alien. This one is cheesy, yeah, but it’s so FUN! Follow along as Katy and Daemon try to figure out what they mean to each other while trying not to get killed by the Arum; the Lumen’s enemy. In this world, the DOD is well aware that aliens exist and that they live on Earth. However, they are unaware that the aliens known as Luxen actually possess powers that make them.. well… powerful beyond means. This isn’t just a romance story; it focuses on family and friendships and it has a bunch of kick ass action and the entire plot with the DOD is so interesting.
The Pine Deep Series by Jonathan Maberry ; I’m only on the first book but this one is a bit more mature in terms of horror and things like that. If you like scary books or feel like being spooky in time for Halloween, you should definitely check this one out!
The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare : I’m sure you know about this one, but if you don’t! Angels, demons, warlocks, vampires, faeries, werewolves? What more could you want? When Clary Fray discovers she’s actually a Shadowhunter; an appointed warrior of the Angel Raziel and has angel blood coursing through her veins, her life is about to change forever. Join her and the rest of the Shadowhunter gang (and even a few others) as they team up to rescue her mom and stop an all out war from happening.
The Darkest Minds Series by Alexandra Bracken ; I’m only on the first book but I absolutely love it! It’s an intense read that has me on the edge of my seat constantly. I adore Ruby and she’s easily become one of my favorite female characters of all time.
Dorothy Must Die Series by Danielle Paige ; Okay. I know, I know. Really? Dorothy Must Die? Hear me out! This book is FUN. Trashy? Perhaps, but fun! The first book is really fast paced and honestly? I am living for a world where Dorothy is evil. So basically our main character is named Amy and she is the other girl from Kansas. She’s sent to Oz to save it from Dorothy Gale who has become power hungry and is now pure evil along with the Tin-Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow. The rest of the series doesn’t really live up to the first book, but I would say you should read the first one anyway. It’s a lot of fun.
Did I Mention I Love You Series by Estelle Maskame: Sixteen-year-old Eden Munro decides to spend the summer with her father in Santa Monica as her parents are divorced now. Once there, she meets her father’s new family and that includes Tyler Bruce; her new asshole step brother with a short temper and a huge ego but as she gets to learn more about him, she finds herself falling for him. This trope isn’t for everyone and I know the whole step sibling thing is super taboo but this series is awesome and I read it during a huge reading slump and it really helped me get though it.
Perfect Chemistry Series by Simone Elkeles: When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she’s worked so hard for―her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. (Each book in this series focuses on a different Fuentes brother.)
Fighting to Be Free Series by Kirsty Moseley: Jamie Cole has just been released from juvenile detention. Determined to go straight, he tries to cut ties with crime boss Brett Reyes - but Brett has no intention of letting him go. Jamie’s life is already more complicated than it needs to be, yet it’s when he meets a beautiful stranger at a bar that Jamie knows he’s really in over his head. Ellie Pearce has just come out of a terrible relationship and isn’t looking for anything serious; until she meets Jamie. Their attraction is overwhelming and intense - she can’t seem to shake her growing feelings for him, even though she’s trying to keep it casual. But when fate goes horribly wrong and Jamie’s family is faced with ruin, he’s forced to strike a deal with Brett. Despite his struggles, he wants nothing more than a future with Ellie. That’s until Ellie finds out that he’s been hiding more from her than she could ever imagine.
Mind if I drop in a few stand alone’s? I’m trying to read more series’ but I’ve always been more of a stand alone kind of girl, so here are some of my current favs:
#MurderTrending by Gretchen McNeil : WELCOME TO THE NEAR FUTURE, where good and honest citizens can enjoy watching the executions of society’s most infamous convicted felons, streaming live on The Postman app from the suburbanized prison island Alcatraz 2.0. When seventeen-year-old Dee Guerrera wakes up in a haze, lying on the ground of a dimly lit warehouse, she realizes she’s about to be the next victim of the app. Knowing hardened criminals are getting a taste of their own medicine in this place is one thing, but Dee refuses to roll over and die for a heinous crime she didn’t commit. Can Dee and her newly formed posse, the Death Row Breakfast Club, prove she’s innocent before she ends up wrongfully murdered for the world to see? Or will The Postman’s cast of executioners kill them off one by one?
One Small Thing by Erin Watt : Meet Beth and Chase. Beth is entering her senior year and is still trying to move on from the death of her older sister three years ago. In a small town with parents who have suddenly become her wardens; that seems nearly impossible. And then she meets the mysterious and hot Chase who immediately draws her in. Their attraction is instant and he’s the first person who makes her feel like Beth Jones and not Lizzie; the young girl who lost a sister and is somehow broken by it. But as she falls harder for Chase, she’s hit with the reality of the part he played in her sister’s death. It’s about forgiveness, love, and moving on. It’s sad and sweet and such a fun, quick read. Definitely good for trying to get out of a slump!
Autoboyography by Christina Lauren :  Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community. If you read one book off of this list, PLEASE let it be this one. This book is so… amazing. It’s been months and I still think about it constantly.
Fault Line by C. Desir : Trigger WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS A RAPE. It is not shown, but it’s the main conflict in the book. Over the years I have struggled with if I liked this book because it was good or if I liked it because of how much it fucked me up. I read this book in one sitting and when I finished, I sat in my bed for a good hour and just…. didn’t move or do anything. You will NOT be rooting for the main couple. The narrator is unlikable and you will HATE all the characters in this book. The ending is NOT happy and I don’t know why I’m recommending this but GOD. This book, after so many years, just stuck with me because of how fucked up it was. It deals with the whole “recovery” process in such a dark way that we normally don’t see in YA fiction and I think that’s what makes it stand out so much. If you want something darker, read this. But read it with caution. If this isn’t something you like then please, don’t bother reading it. It’s not happy and it’s sure as shit not fluffy. Summary : Ben could date anyone he wants, but he only has eyes for the new girl—sarcastic free-spirit Ani. Luckily for Ben, Ani wants him too. She’s everything Ben could ever imagine. Everything he could ever want. But that all changes after the party. The one Ben misses. The one Ani goes to alone. Now Ani isn’t the girl she used to be, and Ben can’t sort out the truth from the lies. What really happened, and who is to blame? Ben wants to help her, but she refuses to be helped. The more she pushes Ben away, the more he wonders if there’s anything he can do to save the girl he loves.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero : If you like Scooby-Doo or Archie’s Weird Mysteries this book is probably for you. 1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club are all grown up and haven’t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Kerri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she’s got Tim, an excitable Weimaraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter’s been dead for years. The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting.
Fatal Throne by Candace Fleming ; A book about Henry VIII and his six wives. If you like historical fiction then this book might be for you! It’s told through the perspective of his six wives (and even Henry himself) and it’s a really fascinating read.
Okay, I think I’m going to stop here. Let me know if none of these speak to you and I’ll give you some more recs! I didn’t know what kind of genres you liked, so I tried to throw in a little bit of everything.

FanWorks Wednesdays -bohoartist
Tumblr media
by Keva Andersen
Hope you had a great summer, Philes! We’re back with our Fan Author series. This week’s author is no stranger to fandom, and recently co-authored a project that stretches the boundaries of the usual fanfic experience. Meet bohoartist! If you haven’t read “Two Agents Missing, Presumed Dead” head over there, scroll to the bottom, and read. I’ll wait. @bohoartist and co-author @piecesofscully used Tumblr to lay out their story piece by piece, with images, e-mails, and news articles. It’s a great read and fun to put the pieces together as you go.
If you like short, sweet, and a kick in the feels, try “The Healing Power of Touch.” Scully is trying to comfort Mulder after losing his mom in Sein Und Zeit and the glimpse of her thoughts after doing Teena Mulder’s autopsy sticks with you. If you’re looking for something a little more “adult,” then this hits the, er, spot. I’ll let you infer from the title what “Three Times Mulder and Scully Got Caught and One Time They Didn't Care” is about!
We talked with bohoartist about, writing, inspiration, and of course, The X-Files.
How long have you been a Phile?
Since June 19th, 1998, the day “Fight the Future” came out. I had not seen a single episode. In fact, I had avoided it as I was getting sick of all the alien sci-fi stuff that had been coming out seemingly one on top of the other. I had a friend who was a Phile though, and she was always pushing me to watch it. Well, that Friday evening, my parents came home from work and announced that we were going to go see a movie and I got to choose! So I picked up the newspaper (remember perusing newspapers for movie options?!) and I see “The X-Files: Fight the Future” and then I see that it’s rated PG-13 for, and I quote, “violence, horror, and gore.” Excellent. So we went and I was hooked.
What was your first episode?
My first episode was “Squeeze,” and I actually watched it the same night I saw the movie. When we came home from the theater, FX was playing a marathon and I dove in from Squeeze on. I was able to rent a VHS of the Pilot and “Deep Throat” from Blockbuster and by the time Season 6 premiered, I was fully caught up.
How long have you been writing fic?
I’ve been writing and posting fic since November of 2015.
What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve been reading fanfic since I first became a fan, so the years and years of stories I’ve consumed had definitely been a source of inspiration, but what finally pushed me over that line was I looking for a specific scenario. I wanted to read some smut where Scully gives Mulder a haircut and that leads to things getting...interesting...but I couldn’t find anything. So I decided, what the hell, I’m just going to write it myself. And thus was born my first fic: “Shear Bliss.”
Who is your favorite XF character to write?
Oh, that’s hard. I bounce back and forth between Mulder and Scully. I love Mulder’s sense of humor so it’s fun to inject that into my writing, but I also really love writing Scully. It’s such a challenge to get her voice correct. She’s insanely intelligent and strong, but there is also this underlying quality of quiet vulnerability. I love taking that challenge head on.
Are there any XF characters you dislike or find too difficult to write?
I haven’t come across one I haven’t enjoyed writing yet. I haven’t ever written Diana, so that might be one that I could see myself struggling with. Any of the side characters are always going to be more difficult to write as you don’t want to fall into a trap of making them too one-dimensional.
Is there a story you're most proud of or that's a favorite?
I’m really proud of my series “Three Times Mulder and Scully Got Caught and One Time They Didn’t Care.” It was the first time I had ever completed anything that had separate parts. I’m also very proud of “Heat.” That was a smutty drabble that was written in response to a prompt and I decided to get a little creative with how I handled it.
Where can people find your work, and what's the best way to send feedback?
Tumblr and AO3 for both my work and feedback. I always post to Tumblr first though so follow me if you want to make sure you catch my work when it’s first posted.
Do you take fic prompts from fans?
I do! I don’t necessarily write all of them, but I adore getting prompts. They get my brain working! I would love to get more!
Have you written your own original characters outside of fandom?
I have not yet been brave enough to venture into the world of non-fandom. I’d like to though. I just need the right story.
Anything you’d like to share about your writing process?
I have a theater background, so I tend to look at every character in detail, even tiny ones. What is their background? What led them here? What are they trying to accomplish and why? If I can get a good feel on the voice of each character and their lives, then I can create the world they live in and draft the story around them.
You recently co-authored a fic project that was different than most, the excellent “Two Agents Missing, Presumed Dead.” What was your inspiration to tell a story in that kind of format?
God, that project was so much fun. @piecesofscully and I are good friends and we both love horror and scary stories/movies. She sent me a link to a story on the subreddit No Sleep that was created in a slightly similar fashion to what we ended up with. After I read it, I sent her a message saying “I have to write a story like this. Like right now,” and she said the same thing so we decided to create it together! We decided to take the format from the subreddit and take it way further.
Do you have a favorite author? (fanfic or published!)
Oh man, I have way too many favorite fanfic authors to even attempt to list. My favorite published authors are Stephen King, JK Rowling, Dorothy Parker, and Edgar Allan Poe. I should stop there because otherwise, I’ll just keep listing authors into infinity.
Is there any advice you'd give to aspiring writers?
There are three things that I think are vital when writing. Write. Then rewrite. I very seldomly stick with what first makes it to paper (or screen in this instance.) Give your brain room to play by editing and rewriting. If you can get your hands on a kickass beta, even better. Then take the info they gave you and rewrite it until you’re proud of it. Read. You can’t ever evolve or grow as a writer if you’re not reading. Whether it be fanfic or actual published books, read every chance you get. As William Faulkner said, don’t be afraid to “kill your darlings.” More often than not, that one little passage that you're obsessed with and completely married to is the one thing keeping your good story from becoming great. Don’t be afraid to sacrifice that sentence or paragraph for the good of the story.
Thank you to bohoartist for talking with us!

    Mabel Walker Willebrandt
Born May 23rd, 1889
Died April 6th, 1963 at age 73
She was born in Woodsdale, Kansas as Mabel Elizabeth Walker.
Her family were farmers
She spent her early years traveling between prairie towns from Oklahoma to Missouri
Her father David was a local newspaper editor
She used to help him set the type for print
She was expelled from Park College in Parksville (a Presbyterian college), Missouri for being outspoken
She questioned the validity of a “virgin birth”
Reportedly she won the debate
In 1906 she began teaching in Buckley, Michigan
During this time she
Was almost lost in a blizzard
Trapped by a forest fire
Was threatened by a student with a knife
In 1910 she married Arthur Willebrandt, the principal
Together they moved to Phoenix, Arizona while Arthur recovered from tuberculosis
Mabel graduated from Arizona State University in 1911
Around this time she became severely hearing impaired and wore a hearing aid in each ear
She supposedly fixed her hair to hide them.
In 1912, they moved to Los Angeles where Mabel taught school during the day and took law classes at night
In 1916, she graduated from the University of Southern California with a masters in law
While completing her degree, Mabel began pro bono work in local police courts for mostly prostitution cases
She argued 2,000 cases as the city’s first female public defender
Her efforts led to courts permitting testimony from both women and men in these cases
This meant the male clients had to appear in court (in front of the press) as well as the female defenders
She successfully campaigned for the enactment of a revised community property statue at the state level (which involves property rights in marriages)
She was instrumental in getting the police to stop nickelodeon owners from preying on young girls during the “Rosebud Baby Case”
Apparently, the men were taking advantage of young girls during the movies
After graduation, she opened her own practice in downtown Los Angeles with Fred Horowitz (he built the famous hotel Chateau Marmont)
During World War I, she served as head of the Legal Advisory Board for draft cases
John Shepherd, perhaps the only man she really loved, who was killed in World War I.
In 1920, she moved her folks out west to be closer to her
In 1921, at 32, she was recommended by Frank Doherty (her old law professor), Senator Hiram Johnson, and all the judges in Southern California for the position of Assistant Attorney General under President Harding
Making her the highest-ranking women in the US federal government at the time and the first woman to head the Tax Division.
However, part of the issue is that no one wanted the job
It had no political advantage
It was a position that had to enforce unpopular laws
Her duties included overseeing federal taxation, federal prisons, and matters relating to the Volstead Act (the Prohibition Act)
She established the first female federal prison, Alderson federal prison in West Virginia
At the time, female prisons were too full to hold all inmates
If there was not enough space they would be housed with male inmates or otherwise alternatively punished
Sexual exploitation of women in the prison system was very high at the time
The prison was modeled as a boarding school offering classes for work-oriented fields
It had no armed guards or fences
Weirdly, still segregated
Things weren’t all great, however
In her 1929 book, The Inside of Prohibition, she described her problems
The law was too weak to do the job
The man in charge was not up to the task
She was only given volunteers to help make arrests
Things were so bad, one of her early arrests was a group that actually fielded a baseball team called the BOOTLEGGERS
She helped convinced the state department to give her boats and crews to apprehend alcohol coming into the country by boat
Reportedly, she met with the Treasury’s Prohibition unit, the US Coast Guard, and the Customs Service once and weeks later Congress okayed $11 million dollars for speed boats and equipment
She might have been the only person working to enforce prohibition
She said, “At one time it was quite apparent that no real effort was being made to put an end to such open defiance of our laws. Liquor runners operated off Florida practically in the open, in broad daylight, with little or no interference. There for years the prosecuting office and the prohibition agents engaged equally in the game of evasion of responsibility.”
In 1923, she successfully brought down the ‘Big Four of Savannah’
Reportedly the largest bootlegging ring in the US
She brought in George Remus, nicknamed ‘King of the Bootleggers’ and supposedly the inspiration for Jay Gatsby
Mabel came under a lot of trouble at one point for arresting Helen Morgan, a popular singer who had been reportedly duped into running a speakeasy
She regularly made the society magazines as a bit of a villain
She also argued to reform prisons for young offenders
She is credited with starting the prison work programs for male prisons
She started the first record keeping system for federal inmate populations
In 1924, Mabel and her husband Arthur got divorced
They were separated in 1916
Her mother-in-law moved in with Mabel and Arthur but Mabel financially supported the whole family
Reportedly because after putting Arthur through law school, he was unwilling to pay his share of expenses
In 1925, she adopted a two-year-old daughter named Dorothy Rae
Whom she raised with her friends
Feminism, Sexuality, and Politics by Estella B. Freedman
The book mentions that this was a more common practice at the time for career women that wanted a family.
Her parents took over when she was in Washington
Back in Prohibition, however, Mabel prosecuted 48,734 cases between 1924 and 1925, of which resulted in 39,072 convictions
278 cases went to the Supreme Court
She argued 40 of those cases
In 1927, she devised the plan to catch gangsters with tax evasion and in 1931 successfully prosecuted Al Capone
She recommended J. Edgar Hoover to head the FBI
In 1928, she campaigned for Republican candidate Herbert Hoover
To do this, she would address Methodist ministers and slam Hoover’s Democrat opponent, Al Smith as a ‘wet’ candidate
She began timing speakeasy raids to coincide with the Democratic convention
She was recognized as a major force behind getting Hoover elected
She took political help anywhere she could get it including the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Ku Klux Klan saying, “I have no objection to people dressing up in sheets if they enjoy that sort of thing.”
For her service, she expected to be appointed Attorney General but was snubbed
In 1928, she resigned her post and returned to private practice
Mabel’s first case outside of the government was for California Fruit Industries that made wine and went on to serve as a lobbyist for the industry
CFI’s first big product push with her was Vine-Glo
Which was a concentrate that if added to water and sugar and left alone for two months made wine at home
Her casework set the foundation for the basic interpretations of the 16th and 18th amendments
In 1930, Mabel successfully argued for Frederick Albert Cook’s release from prison
He had been falsely imprisoned when several of his business partners committed fraud
Because his lawyer, Joseph Weldon Bailey, had a personal problem with the judge, he lost the case
Mabel managed to get him off his 14-year sentence in 7
Cook claimed to be the first explorer to reach the North Pole
In 1950, she served as counsel to the Screen Directors Guild
She defended the studios during the “Red Scare” and Joe McCarthy
She represented Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Aviation Corp. of America
Her famous clients include
Louis B. Mayer
Jean Harlow
Clark Gable
Jeanette MacDonald
She also began defending bootleggers she had helped put away
She went on to pioneer the fields of aviation and radio law
She was the first woman to chair a committee for the American Bar Association for aeronautical law
She got her pilot’s license and promoted air travel with Amelia Earhart and Jacqueline Cochoran (created the Women’s Auxillary Army Corps and Women Airforce Service Pilot organizations and was the first woman to break the sound barrier)
She received an Honorary Doctorate from the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce
Due to intense criticism of her role in Al Smith losing the presidency, as her rhetoric was seen as anti-Catholic, she converted to Catholicism
Later in life, she worked to destroy many of her personal records (especially from when she was Attorney General)
She, in fact, was overlooked by several early women’s history studies as she purposely erased many of her personal histories
Which is why much of what we know comes from her legal work
Mabel Walker Willebrandt died of lung cancer in Riverside, California
She was survived by her adopted daughter, Dorothy Rae (Van Dyke)
Her lifelong friend, Judge John J. Sirica, was quoted as saying, “If Mabel had worn trousers, she could have been president.”
Nicknames
“First Legal Lady of the Land”
“Prohibition Portia” (which is a joke from Julius Caesar–its Brutus’s wife)
“Deborah of the Drys”
“Mrs. Firebrand.”
Fun facts
She owned a farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Once advised a prostitute she worked for on “going straight”
Mabel looked over her books and said to keep working six more months
Then ended up footing the rest of the bill herself to get the woman and her sons into a nice home
Quotes
“Give me the authority and let me have my pick of 300 men and I’ll make this country as dry as it is humanly possible. There’s one way it can be done – get at the source of supply. I know them and I know how they could be cut off. I have no patience with this policy of going after the hip-pocket and speakeasy cases. That’s like trying to dry up the Atlantic Ocean with a blotter.”
In reference to herself “an instrument of God”

beautifully morbid Ch.1 (Spencer x Fem!reader)
AN: so i have always had the idea of spencer with a mortician and so this story was born from that. Its set in season 9-10 spencer, so after maeve and before the crazy shit show of cat adams. But any way tagging the favs @maybe-mikala @dontshootmespence
*yo yo yo this is a repost from ya friendly neighborhood Spencer Reid lover reposting the first chapter of my mortician reader anyway, goodnight from my blog to yours*
Summery: the stereotype of mortician is one who is a walking rain cloud seeing the last moments of a human. But for her it was just another part of life. Spencer reid is an FBI agent with the BAU a meeting during a case leaves him…wanting to know more about the lovely upbeat undertaker.
Warning: none…
The first time spencer had met the upbeat undertaker was for a case, he was tasked with going to the morgue to find out if it was possible a body sent in could be still alive, if any possible means in a morticians hand book could hide the fact the person was alive.
He walked in with JJ next to him looking around the mortuary was strange, from the black decor that looked as of edgar allan poe and tim burton had become interior designers to the odd childrens corner with colorful toys parents dealing with grief could set there children so they  didn’t have to be around to hear why grandma was gone, or any details on how her body would look.
“I mean i know the stereotype of mortician is all about the dark and dead but..this is not what i had expected..” JJ picked up a small doll, two black buttons for eyes and a sown mouth in a smile. The dress was something Dorothy would wear of she lived in halloween town.
Spencers eyes looked around the shop before walking towards the front desk a small bell sat a note perched behind it ‘Ring to call forth the spirit of the halls’ a small chuckle left his throat as he picked it up giving a ring. He turned to JJ shrugging as nothing happened. “Maybe the spirit of the hall didn’t hear us?” Once more he rang the bell waiting as a female voice shouted out
“The spirit of the hall heard you the first time, please do not ring again as to not wake the spirits of the bitch in the walls…also known as mrs. O'grady…botch on makeup job and they haunt you forever” spencer turned to JJ who in turn shrugged laughing to herself.
A moment later a young woman came out hair pulled back, eyes lined with what from afar could seem like the ashes of the people she had cremated simply got in her eyes and she rubbed at them, leaving a smudged grey ring, her lips were painted in a deep green color, like poison or a giant tree in a dark forest. She wore a black fitted shirt, a skull on the front, she was curvy, with bright eyes that lit up when she smiled, spencer watched her, eyes moving over her face quickly. “Sorry, i was in the back setting the machine up…um what can i help you lovely people with? Picking up or planning?” JJ stepped forward “Ma'am were with the FBI we were wondering if you could answer some questions,” her eyebrows furrowed as she nodded “Of course..um i’m (y/n) whats happened? What do you need” spencer stepped forward eyes looking her over, she was beautiful, truly,
“I’m dr. Spencer reid, this is agent jareau, we were wondering if a person working in ypur field could make it seem as if a person, was dead, to the public, any way someone could make it look completely real…” Her face scrunched as she nodded “Well the only way i could possibly see that happening is if they pull a juliet…ya know the priest gives Juliet a vile and the contents make her appear dead, then the priest can fake it like he did all his tests. Its a plant to make you seem dead. It masks your pulse…its how the main bad guy from the sherlock stories faked his death by hanging, how juliet would be able to runaway with romeo…once they have that…then its about faking death papers, and that’s it really. Also it would mean they have a way to fake being an examiner, so they do both…mortician and examiner.” Spencer nodded looking to JJ who nodded thanking her for her time before starting to walk out “Uh jj i’ll be out in a second…i just need to make a call” the look on JJ’s face screamed she knew what he really wanted to do but she simply nodded telling him to take all the time he needed before walking out leaving the two alone.
“So…um…i don’t do this…ever…ever. But um would you maybe like to get dinner sometime…i mean if you want…and i just um” her laugh set him back a minute as she pulled out a sharpie pulling his hand towards her writing her number quickly before releasing his hand, a smile grew on his face as he nodded “Um i’ll call you….” She nodded waving as he stumbled out almost tripping on a small toy car from the childrens corner.
He smiled as he opened the passenger door, quickly buckling himself in. “So when are you two going out?” Spencers face flushed as he cleared his throat “I have no idea what you are talking about…we should get back to the others tell them what she told us” with a knowing nod they drove to the office. Spencer glancing at his palm smiling to himself. He hoped this case would end soon. He had a date to plan.

The Name Garden: Q&A Monday
Hello everyone, and welcome to a brand new week of baby names! Here are the anonymous questions that I received during the week. I hope the answers give you some naming inspiration; feel free to share your own answers in the comments below, and help others in the naming community out!
Do you have a question you’d like answered on The Name Garden Q&A Monday? Send it in here!
---
Q: Which one of this names do you prefer: Noelle Lorena or Primrose/Primrosa Noelle? For a French-spanish family living in Spain?
A: I really like Primrose, and I want to go with it, but I’m not feeling the 2-2 syllable feel. The other two have a nicer flow to them! I haven’t actually heard of Primrosa before, but I think I like that. Primrosa Noelle. I feel like the -a ending will be more common in Spain, and therefore easier to go with. Noelle then brings that French sound into it. So Primrose Noelle is my choice.

I like slightly unusual names I don't want a totally common name. Thank you x

Q: I'm looking for a kind of dark yet believable first name for a boy with the surname "Hellgoth". Any ideas?
A: That is a tricky one, I feel like a lot of dark names will tip it over the edge of believable, so you do want to go fairly neutral (as I’m assuming it’s for a character). Here are some that may work, from very neutral, to bordering quite dark:
Blaise Hellgoth
Damon Hellgoth
Edgar Hellgoth
Damien Hellgoth
Dante Hellgoth
Bram Hellgoth
Victor Hellgoth
Kane Hellgoth
Orion Hellgoth
Maxim Hellgoth
Klaus Hellgoth
Dane Hellgoth
Desmond Hellgoth
Edwin Hellgoth
Stellan Hellgoth
Silas Hellgoth
Damius Hellgoth
Silvain Hellgoth
Oren Hellgoth
Pierce Hellgoth
Draven Hellgoth
Erik Hellgoth
Briar Hellgoth
Oleander Hellgoth
Sullen Hellgoth

Q: Re: A sister for Sullivan. Thank you for your response! I really like the names Adelaide and Molly with Sullivan. To respond to your question about my style of names, I like names that I would consider to be quirky vintage. So for girls I like Clementine, Beatrix, Opal and others like this. I also like nature names like Iris and Flora. I don't know that these styles particularly fits with Sullivan... any more suggestions for me? Thank you for your help!
A: Hello again! I’m glad I could help you. Knowing your style does help a lot - I quite like those names too. I think the older names do fit with Sullivan, but since it’s been revived, there’s almost two styles it fits into - one is very vintage and classic, and the other is very modern and funky. So let’s see what we can do with the vintage and classic names!
