My Peak TV Journey Only Murders in the Building
The short version: I liked the most recent season, I get why some people didn’t, and I hope the next season is the last. While the building of the title is still the site of the murders, the past two seasons have mostly been show biz satire. The way a viewer feels about it will depend on how you feel about all the variety of guest stars this affords. I found myself enjoying thinking about how these actors appearing resonated with their other roles. For some examples:
The murder victim for the season was Sazz Pataki, Charles Haden-Savage’s long time stunt double. I feel sad about the loss of Sazz, whose presence was always a treat. Watching the third season of Party Down reminded me how much Jane Lynch can make a character different while still being distinctly a Jane Lynch character. True star material.
The season introduced Bev Melon an executive at Paramount played by Molly Shannon. I enjoyed thinking about how her character here is as the kind of person who made her The Other Two character, Pat Dubek’s life miserable. Also through this Richard Kind was on continuing to be in everything, here as a neighbor who wears an eye patch for conjunctivitis and looks somewhat menacing. For viewers like me who saw him in both Girls5Eva and Evil over 2024, this was a funny midpoint.
It was great seeing Desmin Borges as another one of the west wing neighbors. I’ve missed his presence since You’re The Worst ended. That said, he and his family had the most underdeveloped presence of the newly introduced neighbors. He can do so much more! (And I trust that the unfamiliar to me actors who played his wife and daughter can too.)
Finally seeing Griffin Dune as Dudenoff, a film professor/ unofficial landlord made me feel like I had great luck with timing. He showed up shortly after I finished reading his memoir, The Friday Afternoon Club: A Family Memoir, which per the subtitle, was more bout being from a family of writers than his own experience as a filmmaker. His character, Dudenoff, has a Scorsese book on his desk, likely because Dunne co-produced and starred in After Hours, which Scorsese directed. (Though Dunne is also forever haunted by the idea of what if Tim Burton directed it.) I once saw Dunne do a Q&A after a screening of After Hours and I’m thrilled by his presence ever since.
The seasons plot involved a movie based on the first season being made. As such there were a lot of homages to other movies. Each episode is named after a movie and the early ones at least have characters talk about that movie. These included comparing the premier to Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West which I have never seen. In the second episode, Sazz appears in footage from a documentary about stunt performers talking about how much she like Errol Morris’s Gates of Heaven, which I also haven’t seen. I also haven’t seen The Sisters Brothers, which was referenced this season by having the film within the show directed by a pair of sisters with the family name Brothers. I suspect that Selena Gomez suggested this as the writer/director of The Sisters Brothers also directed Emilia Perez.
I was amused that the movie about the podcast within the series was being produced by Paramount. The tv series is produced by and broadcast on a streaming service owned by Disney. How did this happen? I have to assume that it was part of a push towards better brand awareness that included Paramount sponsoring the summer movies at Bryant Park
Tumblr media
(I didn’t get to any of them) and a Paramount in the 1970 series at the MoMA, (I only got to a screening of Robert Altman’s Nashville, which is great).
The transition to being about lonely apartment dwellers to showbiz satire with aging affecting everything feels sort of inevitable. After all Charles and Oliver started as show biz veterans with various amounts of dissatisfaction with their post-career lives. But even if you liked the various celebrities playing new characters or versions of themselves, the part of the season that said that this case would have us circling back to the beginning, only for that not to be true was frustrating. Sazz’s murder was entirely related to things going on in her life. There plot holes from the first season that were pointed out are still plot holes. There’s were some plots introduced in the second season that hadn’t been mention since. The building related characters whose murder is sets up. The next season has barely been seen in the past two. Which gets back to why I hope the next season is the last, so they can commit to taking care of these plot holes, and more importantly, the lives of the buildings inhabitants.

Only Murders in the Building (Season 4)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Only Murders in the Building (Season 4, 2024, USA)
Creators: Steve Martin & John Hoffman
Mini-review:
The most lovable crime-solving trio is back for another round, and they deliver as expected. At this point, four seasons in, the concept of the show should start to feel overdone, but the writers went very meta and actually played around with that repetitiveness. I must admit the mystery itself was probably the least interesting yet, at least for me, but everything else about the season is more than fun enough. I especially enjoyed the episode shot in found-footage style and the one set in Long Island, cause it proves the show is still more than willing to experiment. While the third season remains my favorite for now, it's pretty obvious that Only Murders in the Building has enough fuel to run for as long as it wants.

Shotgun Wedding (2022)
Tumblr media
Shotgun Wedding will feel familiar to most viewers. While I can't recall any other movies where a bride and groom must save their wedding party from pirates, much of what we see feels like bits and pieces collected from other films. Not necessarily better films, but other films. This is perfectly serviceable for something you’d watch at home “for free” (that’s to say, the price of a monthly subscription that also gives you other perks). If you had to travel outside of the house to see this rom-com, that'd be a different story.
On the day of their destination wedding on a private island in the Philippines, Tom (Josh Duhamel) and Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) get into an argument and step away from the wedding party. Just in time, too, as a group of pirates arrive and take everyone hostage.
Shotgun Wedding has a great cast and knows it, which is why the film ends with footage of everyone having a good time, shot as if it were a home video. Jennifer Coolidge plays Carol, Tom’s mom (despite only being 11 years older than he is), Lenny Kravitz plays Sean, Darcy’s rich and successful ex-fiancé, Cheech Marin plays Darcy’s father, Robert and Sônia Braga is his ex-wife, Renata. My favorite is Callie Hernandez as Darcy’s sister, Jamie. The members of the wedding party all have some good moments, particularly when they try and humanize themselves so the pirates build sympathy and don’t shoot them.
I called this a romantic comedy earlier, but this is more of an action romantic comedy, with much more emphasis on Tom and Darcy dealing with the pirates than scenes that will make your heart swoon. Maybe it’s the wibbly-wobbly chemistry between Lopez and Duhamel that prevents you from feeling the love. They’re ok together but they don’t feel like they're excited to get married. They're more like a couple who have been together for so long that they “might as well make it official”. Part of that may be intentional, as the argument that takes them away from the wedding party is about Darcy feeling uncertain about the whole thing… but tangible sparks between the leads would have elevated this film a lot.
Directed by Jason Moore, Shotgun Wedding has a decent amount of laughs. I just wish they were bigger, or that the movie felt more distinct. The action scenes, the twists, even some of the best jokes and most tender moments never make you think "I'm glad I saw this movie because I would've missed out on this joke/twist/action scene if I hadn't". The wedding is taking place in the Philippines but was shot in the Dominican Republic and the actors portraying the resort’s owners sound like they’re from… well, not the Philippines. The film is often unexpectedly violent and gruesome so I’m not even sure those who want to see lovers getting together will be 100% on board. What this movie needed to do was get way more extreme. More romance, more action or more comedy. This attempt at an even mix of all three makes for a digestible, but bland end result.
Shotgun Wedding is missing something. For the price I paid, I'm satisfied and had a decent time. It’s just that down the line, I won’t remember it. (February 14, 2023)

Movie Review: Losing her "fur baby" has this beau feeling "Hangdog"
Frustration can be a great launching point for laughs, and the comedy “Hangdog” revels in it. Our “hero” is a frustrated “big city” hipster relocated to Portland, Maine. Uptight Walt is seriously out of step with the laid-back Mainers. Walt, played by Desmin Borges of “Only Murders in the Building,” has given up on his advertising art director dreams and is both “proud” and secretly resentful…
