Wildflowers of Eastern Greenland Greenland may not be green, but it the short summer period it explodes with wildflowers. Many bloom for a very short time - weeks or perhaps even days, almost all are small and close to the ground, if not miniature, but all are super showy and bright to attract the few pollinating insects that exist. There were many coming Arctic wildflowers like cottongrass or poppies or various saxifrages, but there were some quite rare finds like the carnivorous butterwort. All in all, there are 25 species collected in this post plus 3 types of berries. I hope it’s one of the more comprehensive lists of the Eastern Greenlandic flora, and my job as a botanist-at-heart is complete and done. In consideration of the current state of the world, we're holed up at home in Alberta, wilfully. We hope that you are all taking the same precaution and are self-isolating wherever you happen to be. The best thing we can all do right now is take care of ourselves and each other. As a society, we are only as strong as our most vulnerable, and they need our help and protection right now. . When we are not traveling, we work from home and are homebodies by nature, so this situation isn't entirely different for us. But it sure feels different, and it is all weighing on our minds heavily with so much uncertainty. Of course, our business is taking a big hit and we're being forced to reevaluate many things, but right now we are confident that we will get through this. Not everyone can say that, so we are very grateful to be in the situation we are. . I dug into the archives to pull out a photo from the most isolated place we've ever been to. This is from Greenland about 6 years ago, when we kayaked almost 100kms through fjords on the eastern coast. Just us, a handful of other tour participants plus the guides, and nothing but water and ice. While we still yearn for travel like this, I must say that we're also happy to be safe at home. Grand Pinnacle Iceberg, East Greenland. I stood on deck waiting, freezing as I saw this beef up ahead in the distance. Ship captains don't go out of their way to make an image possible for me. I must be diligent, patient and ready. I was using a Linhof 617 a metal camera unfriendly to use in the freezing temps of Northern East Greenland. The camera got only 4 exposures per roll@of film and I had to make them count. But as we got in range of the iceberg I ran out of film and my frozen fingers struggled to reload the camera. The captain saw me as he stood up on the bridge and took pity on me. He turned the ship to circle the berg giving me the necessary time to load the camera. I will be forever thankful to Captain Hansen for making this image possible. Whales at Sea As we left Greenland behind, it took only short time before we got into the major whale highway along the Greenlandic coast - a good sighting of ablue whale close to the boat, and about half a dozen fin whales.
