war of clarity. / levi ackerman x f!reader
for @levievent #levimonth24. (day nine: soulmate au / day six: love at first sight)
pairing: captain levi ackerman x f!scout reader word count: 1.6k summary: They say finding your soulmate is like getting a migraine. When you've lived with chronic pain your whole life, the legends seem like a joke.
tags: soulmate au, love at first sight, mild language, reader has a chronic pain/illness condition, migraines/headaches credit: dividers by @saradika-graphics
They say when you meet your soulmate, the pain is worse than a migraine.
A rush of blood to the head so twisting, blinding, that the colors of the world bleed together and bleach white; then suddenly, clarity.
Funny enough, youâve suffered through your entire life with ear-splitting headaches.
(Call it a cruel twist of fate.)
If this were the case â if being in pain from your earliest known memories in childhood all the way into enlisting in the cadets meant that you were playing the long game to experience the myth of finding The One â then youâd be quick to joke that everyone youâve ever met could be your soulmate.
The girls in your bunk that offer to press a cold, wet rag to your forehead when the worst of your chronic illness hits â unlikely.
The boys failing at their ODM aptitude tests, where you zip by with flying colors â absolutely not.
You pushâ
Through training.
Through graduation.
Through choosing the Scouts, because for some reason it feels like the most noble option.
(The one that will make a difference, pushing past whatâs beyond the Walls.)
So when you finally make it to the ranks, the emerald cloak draped across your taut shoulders like a badge of honor, you expect that continued dull ache in the base of your skull to follow you until your final days.
A comfort, really, to remind you that youâre still alive.
(If itâs quiet, then youâre probably dead.)
.
.
â â
.
.
 They call him Humanityâs Strongest.
That much youâve heard through the grapevine; a man of unbelievable strength and resolve, an unstoppable myth in the very flesh. If there is anyone to strive towards, to look towards, itâs him.Â
Heâs resilient. Bold.
Lethal.
And you donât care that heâs visiting your small squadron on the Special Operations in the early morning hours of this mundane Sunday, not when youâve woken up with the most vile headache youâve had in quite some time.
It takes all of the effort in the world to drag yourself out of your cot, breaking out in a cold sweat as you beg the pain to ease up a little.
The importance of this moment isnât lost on you.
Special Ops is where youâve hoped youâd end up.
After fighting tooth and nail to place within the top ten of your graduating class, you refuse to let your body win this fight.
Most of your squad has already scrambled outside, tripping over their knee-high boots and fastening worn leather in order to get a glimpse of Captain Levi.
You just barely make it out of the barracks in time for your visitorâs arrival, shrugging your tan cropped jacket over your shoulders with immense effort.
The sun.
(Why the fuck did it have to be sunny again?)
Nostrils flaring, you slowly make your way to the line-up of your comrades as they stand shoulders back, chins tall, to greet the incoming troop of horses.
âAttention!â
Your squad leaderâs voice rings out, and you manage to step your way in line with the rest of your colleagues.
With considerable effort, you lift your chin and keep your eyes closed against the rays of the morning light.
Horses whinny as they come to a halt in the dehydrated earth beneath your boot.
Two or three octaves of grunts can be heard as the representatives from the Special Ops squad make their descent from their saddles.
A few minutes.
Just a few more minutes and you can return to the barracks where itâs cool, itâs darker, itâsâ
âAt ease,â a deeper, baritone voice rings out against your mental pep talk.
Bored, as if already disinterested in being here.
It forces your eyes to open, despite yourself.
White.
The sun seems blinding, like youâve somehow lost your vision in the process of squeezing your eyes so tight â until the world returns.
When your eyes catch black fringe cascading over a gray, narrowed gaze, you let out an exhale you werenât aware you were holding.
Your mind, oftentimes its own hurricane, eases to the eye of the storm.
And there isâŚ
Nothing.
No pain in the base of your skull.
No sensitivity to the sun that beats down on the halved squad that has come to visit to discuss an upcoming mission that your squadron can assist with.
No jolting pain from a bird chirping, or the huffs of exertion exiting like clouds out of the horsesâ mouths, or the murmured excitement from your colleagues that feel intimidating to be even near the man who turns on the heel of his boot to stare the six of you down.
Itâs him.
Itâs really him, thatâs Captain Levi.
His bluish-gray eyes blink down the line of bodies willing to lay down their lives for the cause, acknowledging each person â
Until they find you.
You see it: the way his fist bunches against the leather reigns in his hand, how the muscles of his neck tense when his jaw clenches, the whites of his eyes growing as he stares.
Right. At. You.
Suddenly your stomach bottoms out, but not out of nausea â terror.
A rush of blood to the head so twistingâ
No.
âblinding, that the colors of the world bleed together and bleach whiteâ
It canât be real.
âthen suddenlyâ
The noise ceases.
All you can do is stare back.
.
.
â â
 Clarity.
â â
.
.
The silence knocks you off your axis for the rest of the day.
Everyone is so much quieter than you anticipated.
What used to be deafening now sounds at a normal octave.Â
Your colleagues arenât boisterous, or inconsiderate, or even loud.Â
Theyâre just a baseline of noise, a soundtrack to the soup you stare at in the mess hall without an appetite.
You even enjoy the dimly lit warmth of the lanterns surrounding the building where you sit alone.
The other five of your squad are bombarding a woman and a man â you think theyâre called Petra and Oluo â about their adventures outside of the Walls.
You only realize someone is moving into your space when the wooden chair screeches against the floor of the hall, waking you from a trance.
When your chin lifts, you know who it is already.
You may know nothing about him, but your heart thrums like it does.
Like youâve known him your whole life.
His jaw is set, expression in an eternal scowl as he drops down unceremoniously in front of you. You idle your hold on your spoon, no longer interested in swirling the utensil like you plan to take a bite.
Itâs too much.
Itâs soâ
âYou should eat.â
That honey-smooth voice breaks your thoughts.Â
When he had first arrived in the courtyard on horseback, it was gruff. Devoid of emotion.
Now? Itâs just under his breath, tickling your ears. Soft.
Concerned.
âNot really hungry,â you confess to the stranger â this Captain Levi â unable to look away.
You see his jaw tense before he inhales, slow and measured through his nose.
âIf soup isnât your ideal, then I can give you my share. Your leader went overboard with spoiling us.â
âDid they?â
âYeah, shitâs annoying.â
You arenât sure why you huff through your nose in amusement, but you do. The blunt curse takes you by surprise.
âWhyâs it annoying to be offered the good food?â you ask without thinking.
âBecause thereâs no reason to give my squad special treatment,â he reasons shortly. âWeâre all running into the same shitstorm no matter the rank.â
Oh.
So heâs admirable on top of his resilience.
Your heart feels like itâs growing on overdrive with each syllable, but you hold back anything beyond a bland smile in return.
Setting the spoon down, you let your palm rest against the wooden tableâs surface.
Silence.
Heâs still studying you like youâre a war plan, a strategy he has to conquer.
âI donât understand,â he finally states out of the blue, baritone voice softer this time.
âWhat⌠donât you understand, sir?â
âDonât.â
The command causes your stomach to flip. Captain Leviâs shoulders deflate as he shakes his head.
âDonât⌠use that, for me. Not when weââ
He cuts himself off, dropping his attention to your chin.
No.
Your lips.
âNot when we, what?â you ask after a pregnant pause, though youâre afraid to ask.
Visibly swallowing, the Captain shakes his head. âThought maybe it was a myth.â
So he did feel it.
(An overwhelming flare that consumed the sun.)
âI thought it was, too,â you confess after some time, keeping the conversation quiet between the two of you. âI just â it never happened, for me. And Iâm prone to migrainesââ
âMigraines?â he repeats, eyes narrowing to temporary slits.
âYeah,â you breathe humorlessly. âBy legend, it meant that everyone was my soulmate.â
There.
Laid bare on the table between you, the word makes the confessional.
Two strangers with an invisible string, warring with the reality of clarity before them. You may not know this man, and he may not know you, but suddenly the only thing in your world that brings you peace is the sight of his face and the sound of his voice.
âBut it was never them,â you add after a beat. âAll my life, it was never them. The only person who ever broke through that haze was you.â
Yet Levi doesnât flinch.Â
All he does is nod, as if resigned to the idea, before reaching over for your hand.Â
Wordlessly he picks it up from the table, uncurls your fingers, and places the spoon back in its center. For a minute he pauses, his thumb running along your knuckles as if to commit them to memory.
âEat,â he urges like itâll break him. âEat, and tell me about yourself.â
.
authors note:
Thank you so much for reading! This one shot was unbeta'd and written in an hour as an exercise for Levi Month '24, so I hope you enjoyed my take on the soulmate au.

The Cannibal dragon headcanons ...
(art credit for middle image, ig: dracalyss)
. Cannibal is a huge dragon, the largest of all wild-dragons, but I can't see him being any larger than Vhagar- let alone Balerian the black dread. I imagine he'd be a tad bit smaller than Vhagar- just about. His build is bulky and scarred, a thick neck of scarred obsidian scales, a set of jagged jet-black spikes that run along his spine, and covered in thick taut muscle and hardened flesh. His eyes are a blazing emerald green, teeth sharp and jagged like a shark.
. I also love the idea of him having this 'grinning' look on his face, like a crocodile or the indoraptor from Jurassic world. (His personality screams indoraptor to me, just a mean guy with a nasty lil goblin grin). And with his torn jaw and exposed teeth, it makes him look even creepier and menacing. There's something way too...human about it. Expressive in both his grin and mannerisms.
He's definitely a stare-er too. Something about a monstrously big dragon being unnervingly quiet and observing is uncomfortable, which is exactly the vibes he gives off.
. I like to visualize him as a very 'wild' looking dragon, like how'd you imagine a stray feral cat. His scales are rough and weather-worn, covered in large claw-like scars from fighting and hunting other dragons throughout his life. There's also fanart of him missing a huge chunk of flesh around his jaw and mouth, baring his teeth, which I think looks really cool :) as a young dragon he probably picked off the small and easy dragons, ones that wouldn't put up much of a fight. But as he grew in age and size, he would probably grow cocky and try his luck with larger prey. Due to him being an absolute monster, I'd imagine he'd often come up on top- but not without earning a few disfiguring scars in return.
. Despite never being bonded to a rider before, nor being ridden before in his life (he'd scoff at the mere thought of some little measly human thinking that they could climb upon his back and treat him like a pony), once he bonded with you it was like an instant connection. He is still a little edgy and unpredictable, but there is one thing for certain and that is he is always as gentle as possible with you. He'll press his body into the dirt if it allows you to climb on and off safely, craning his claws and jaw for you to step upon.
. He wouldn't wear a saddle, so you'd have to learn to ride him bareback. Thankfully he has many jagged scales and spikes to cling onto, but to be on the safe side, you'd have special riding gear to wear to help cling on. Rougher gloves and boots and trousers, it certainly helps, even if it's just a little. If anything the fact you ride bareback is a testament of your bond, showing how close and in sync you both are.
. The biggest issue with him would be his... diet, and how he'd have to adapt once he begins to hang around dragonstone more often. I'd imagine he wouldn't eat much, adding to the unpredictability of him and when he would hunt, but as his rider you'd have to supply him at least livestock every week to keep him happy and saturated. Cows, horses, large livestock due to his sheer size.
. He flies quite similar to Vhagar. His form is heavy, and although strong, he is lumbering.
Although at his age now he'd be a rather ancient dragon, he wouldn't really show his age besides a few moments where he just wants to curl up in his little cave upon his â¨private island ⨠to take a nap. In his youth he was most likely a very quick dragon, like a stalking panther striking upon his food. (Being younger dragons and hatchlings). I've seen someone write about him being a silent hunter (I'll reblog and credit once I find them), but that's such a neat idea for his character! He's survived from hunting his own kind, so he's going to hunt differently. Smarter.
. His fire in the books is described as green, and that's just too cool to swap it out with normal fire. Blazing emerald flames that engulf earth and prey, unnatural and mystical. It'd be very distinctive as well, whoever finds their fields or flocks of trees burning and crackling in a blaze of green fire, they'd know that the cannibal had just been there.
. Personality wise, I feel like he'd be cruel and sadistic, but wise and grumpy. Probably cocky as well, for having survived on his for so long and through unconventional means.
He's not a hardheaded bully, he's very tactical when it comes to facing challenges, but at this point he's such a huge threat he may be blinded by his own ego and emotions. If something were to happen to his rider, he'd make sure you'd get avenged. He's ride or die, quite literally. He'll burn everything down for you, because he feels strongly for the one human he feels he can trust. His grief is not silent or tearful, it's angry.

Becoming Real
Recently Good Omens Prime Twitter account posted a BTS photo of Aziraphale and Furfur and it started the gears in my head turning, trying to parse it. It's only just now that it finally coalesced into a proper thought.
I kept thinking Aziraphale reminded me of something, especially when compared to the other angels. Look at him next to pre-Jim Gabriel, Uriel, Michael... heck, even Furfur, who he's standing next to right now.
Furfur is a demon, but his outfit is impeccable, it's sleek and stylish. The angel's suits in heaven are all pressed and flawless and New.
But not Aziraphale. He's dressed in old human clothes, his waistcoat is worn and tattered and long-loved. Aziraphale is, as Michael put it, like an old sofa. Worn and comfortable. He could choose to look basically however he wants, but instead he chooses to clothe himself in actual human clothes, to eat human food, to enjoy human entertainment - books, music, plays, etc. He does this despite the fact that it actively makes the other angels dislike him and find him unpalatable.
And that's what stuck out to me. Because unlike those other angels and demons, Aziraphale doesn't feel distant from humanity. He might be odd or eccentric to humans, but they don't question his humanity. He doesn't stand out to them in the way that the other angels do when they show up.
It occurred to me that this is because unlike the other angels... Aziraphale is Real.
Have you ever read The Velveteen Rabbit? There's a scene in it where they talk about what it means to be Real:
This made me think of Aziraphale. About how the other angels are these pristine things, kept aloof from the world, and then there's Aziraphale, who is worn and shabby, who's lived on earth for millennia among the humans. He's loved and learned and experienced what being human is like and because of that he's Real in a way that the other angels aren't. Humans have personhood, a sense of agency, a sense of self. Angels and demons have only the divine plan, as Beelzebub and Gabriel noted, that's all they live for "if you can call it living".
But what strikes me the most is how potentially devastating Aziraphale's Realness will be to Heaven. They only succeed at keeping angels in line because they're undistracted from the Great Plan. We see how Gabriel - as Jim - takes to cocoa after trying it. We see how quickly Muriel becomes fascinated with books.
Now consider that this is the angel they're putting in charge of Heaven. This worn, shabby, old sofa of an angel who has an endless well of love, for Crowley, for the world and the humans in it. He doesn't seem dangerous in the slightest. He seems Fragile.
But he is dangerous. So very dangerous.
But it's not because he's a guardian, not because he's a warrior, not because he's the Angel of the Eastern Gate who leads a battalion and was issued a flaming sword. He gave all of that away and it's worth noting that this is the first actual choice we see him make in the show, the thing that sets him apart in Crowley's eyes, and it wasn't even Crowley's doing! Aziraphale made a choice to give the mortals his sword out of compassion and it is a sense of compassion we don't see from the other angels.
His deviations all stem from that initial act. It takes him from being this two-dimensional cardboard entity existing only as part of the Divine Plan and set him on the path to actual Personhood.
It doesn't happen right away, of course, because as the Skin Horse says:
"It doesn't happen all at once. You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But those things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."
And doesn't that sum up Aziraphale? He's shabby and worn and he's beautiful to the people who understand and appreciate that being Real means being imperfect, and that every imperfection is still beautiful.
No wonder the angels mock his corporation, his flaws, all the things he enjoys that make him less than what they think he should be. We see evidence over and over that Aziraphale is essentially "ugly" to them. But that's because they don't understand.
Aziraphale's Realness, his personhood, what Crowley has helped nurture from the Wall of Eden all the way to that last desperate kiss, is what really matters. Good Omens has always been about People being fundamentally People. It's the underlying current that ties everything together, for good or for ill. People have agency. People have self-actualization. People have the ability to make their own choices, for good or for evil.
And now Aziraphale has that too.
That's the very real danger he presents to heaven.
Because we've already seen that any angel, given sufficient time and interaction with humans could be like Aziraphale. All it takes is one small opening, one bite from the apple. Whether deliberately or not, Crowley tempted Aziraphale into every step, the way he tempted Eve in the garden. He gave Aziraphale the knowledge of Right and Wrong, presented him with the option, the way he did with humanity. Were they even really human before Crowley? Did he give them free will? His actions cast them out of paradise, but did it ultimately set them free? Has he struggled for millennia to do the same for the angel he's loved so well and for so long?
Does Crowley know how horribly, wonderfully well he succeeded?
Bringing Aziraphale back to Heaven, putting him in charge, was the absolute worst thing the Metatron could have done for keeping the status quo and it's not because of Aziraphale's fighting prowess. It's because of the small Human acts of kindness and pettiness that Aziraphale is capable of. That's not going to go away when he's in Heaven. It's going to spread. He's going to infect Heaven with Humanity. It's going to be so slow and gradual that they won't see it coming until it's far too late.
It's not going to be the way that Aziraphale intends to change Heaven and yet, it will surely ultimately be what really makes a difference.
I wonder too, if maybe that's some subconscious part of it. After seeing Gabriel change, seeing Muriel change, I wonder if there's not some part of Aziraphale that realizes that Heaven is a miserable place that makes miserable people. He'll extend compassion to them that they don't deserve and don't know they're missing and he'll surely go on with whatever his own Plan - with a capital P, of course - is and he won't even realize what he's actually done.
And then, like the ending of S1, like the ending of S2, the ultimate deciding factor will not be who is the best warrior, who is the strongest. It will be about the Human element.
Metatron thought he could control Aziraphale, bring him in line by bringing him back to Heaven. He wants to take away the human element of Aziraphale and shove him back into that Obedient Little Angel shaped mold and he doesn't realize it's not possible anymore. Aziraphale's grown. He'll never fit, he'll never be that again. There is no going back anymore.
As the Skin Horse says: "Once you are Real, you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always."
And Real things, things with depth and purpose and will, are impossible to ever truly control.

About Jazz's coworkers thinking Prowl is just a machine-
Imagine they are really impressed with Prowl and are curious. So maybe other pilots would want to try piloting Prowl too, but Jazz would be like "NOPE. That aft's mine and that's final, bitches"
And other pilots are like.. "what's an 'aft'?"
(Also when scientists will find out that Prowl has a mind of his own and can tranaform into almost any mechanism, they'll definetly want to study him. Possible angst...?)
ANGS YOU SAY?? Oh I imagine Jazzâs boss would immediately try to do something shady. You know like what happened to Sunstreaker when humans got him? That sort of thing.
Jazz would probably be so damn tired/worn out/hurt when they arrive to Earth he would need some time to (at least) sleep. And when he wakes up heâs immediately likeâŚâwhere the fuck is Prowl??
Then If if you feel like suffering - his boss would be like âyeah no the robot left. We tried to make it stay but it left anyway Iâm sorry Jazz.â While Prowl being literally taken apart by a group of scientists in some kind of secret basement. Jazz would have to think hard and think fast to figure out this shit before itâs too late

Kuroo Tetsuro was put on this earth to have children.
Before your little twins were even a thought, heâd look longingly at young couples with kids, watching with the most dazed expression. He was always the first to smile at infants, wave at toddlers, and if the accompanying parents seemed to welcome his affections, heâd ask the young children questions.
So, the gods blessed him with twins. And 9 times out of 10, heâs the most thorough father youâve ever known, and heâs so quick to know which child needs what, when, and why.
Right now, however, is the 1 out of 10. And itâs funny.
âThereâs a tiny human at the end of our bed,â he whispers against your head, the raspiness of his voice rumbling against your temple.
âI sincerely hope you mean one of our children.â
Your joke makes Tetsuro laugh, slowly sitting up to peek at the cutest intruder in your doorway.
âGood morning, baby,â he mumbles, thick fingers pressing into his eyes to rub the sleep from them. You smile at your daughter at the foot of your bed, sleepily gazing at your little girl. âHowâd you sleep?â
âGood, dadda,â she mumbles around her pacifier.
âYeah? Whereâs your sister?â
âSleepinâ.â
âSheâs still sleeping?â He says, yawning softly, an arm wrapping around you to pull you closer. âHow come youâre not still sleeping?â
âBluey!â She squeals excitedly, pointing at the tv in your room.
This, has your husbandâs eyes furrowing. His body shifts slightly, and his eyes dart to span over her tiny frame.
âYou want to watch Bluey?â He asks, and you cock your brow up at him in confusion for his confusion.
âUh-huh!â She crawls onto the foot of your bed with a finger extended to the big screen, âBluey, please?â
âWhatâs wrong?â You whisper, grabbing the remote and clicking the tv so your tiny child is occupied.
Tetsuro leans over, pulling you close, enough to where his warm breath spans over your face.
âI donât know which one that is,â he whispers, and you let out a soft snort.
âYou really donât know?â
âI know Hanako likes Bluey, but Hanaeâs favorite pair of pjâs is the one thatâs being worn right now.â
Your eyes flick back down to the figure at the bottom of your bed, who indeed, is wearing Hanaeâs favorite green pajamas (Hanakoâs are yellow), but is watching Bluey like no oneâs business (Hanae immensely prefers paw patrol).
And in his defense⌠they are twins.
Looking the same is kind of what they do.
âWhat about her eyes?â You whisper back. Hanae has eyes like her fathers, while Hanakoâs are more akin to yours.
âCouldnât get a good look, itâs too early!â
âPacifier color?â
âBaby they switch those regularly, you know better than to ask.â
Chewing on your lip, your eyes shift over your childâs excited eyes watching the tv. Itâs true, if they werenât identical enough, now they have to go and switch the few things that make them different.
âWho are you?â Tetsuro asks to no one, though it does make you giggle.
Then, you smile and slowly sit upďżź, patting your husbandâs chest lovingly. âHey stinky,â you call, and you watch her messy black hair swish as she turns to face you. âWho do you like to hang out with more, uncle ken or uncle ko?â
The tiny human beams around the pacifier in her mouth, âuncle ko! âCause he plays pirates with me in âda pool!â
You and tetsuro look at each other and grin.
Hanae.
Hanako was absolutely whipped for her uncle kenma.
âWe should see him soon, shouldnât we?â You ask, watching as Hanae bounces excitedly.
Tetsuro rolls his eyes as he sits up, ânot before we see uncle Kenma, heâs already pouty that you like uncle Koutaro more, and I gotta hear about it.â
âOf course she likes him more,â you tease, slipping out of bed to start the day. âHanae is practically attached to Koutarouâs leg; she told us she was going to marry him one day, remember?
âGonna marry Uncle Kou one day!â Hanae chirps. âNâ Hanakoâs gonna marry Uncle Kenma, ând weâre all gonna marry Uncle Kei, and-â
âDo not do this to me so early,â Tetsuro groans, patting the bed for the little girl to snuggle with him. She does, with a happy little noise and a quick scurry close to him, and you can only watch with a smile as they watch Bluey together in the rays of the sun before shuffling off to make breakfast.

10.5k words
The smell of your motherâs freshly baked brownies invades your nostrilsâa scent you havenât smelled in a long timeâwhich makes you feel nostalgic for a bit, as if your mother was in the room. Heated sounds of arguing coming from outside closed doors snap you fully awake, eyes fluttering open in response. You try to sit up, but your body fails youâtired and worn out. Your eyes scanned around the room, you were in the infirmary, no doubt about that. Bottles of nectar and cubes of ambrosiaâthe source of the comforting smellâsitting on a nearby table with your guitar sitting in a chair beside it.
âLet me the fuck in, Chris!â You hear Lukeâs voice from outside, annoyance evident in his tone. âSheâs my best friend! Move away from the goddamn door!â
Clarisse scoffs loudly. âBest friend? Best friend? You ditched her to go make out with that blonde smartass!â
You wanted to stand up and eavesdrop on their conversation, but your body wasnât letting you. Clarisse was obviously talking about Lacy, and how Luke bailed on you last minute. Chris probably told her that, and besides, itâs not like she doesnât know that I have feelings for that dumb little shit. You wondered what would happen if you grabbed another few cubes of ambrosia, maybe Lee or whoever tended to you while you were out cold didnât shove a cube down your throat yet. You hesitated, you were a healerâcabin sevenâs finest, for crying out loud!âyou should know better than to give in to whatever your brain tells you to do.
âDo not call Lacy that,â Luke growls at Clarisse. âI asked Y/n if it was okay, and she said it was! I wouldn't have gone if she wasnât okay-â
âIf it wasnât for your dumbassery she wouldnât be in here in the first place, you stupid dumb fuck!â Clarisse growled back, matching Lukeâs intensity like an echo.
âI asked her and she said it was fucking fine! Get that in your damn thick skull!â
âHa! Look whoâs talking!â Clarisse snapped, despite being younger, she was a firecracker in her own right. âActing all high and mighty, when this is all your fault! Did you even know that she went down to the docks, after you acted all white knight just to spend time with that know-it-all little shit? Huh? With an ungodly amount of food meant for the both of you!â
âStop. Calling. Lacy. Fucking. Names!â
What on earth is happening out there? You shake your head, taking a deep breath, forcing yourself to sit with everything you got. You wince at the throbbing pain in your head, leaning against the wall, trying to get your shit together before grabbing a cube of ambrosia and shoving it down your throat despite that nagging voice inside your head telling you no, like a broken record.
âY/n is unconscious, for crying out loud!â Clarisse yells, anger spewing like lava from the rock climbing wall down by the amphitheater. âAnd all you can fucking think of is Lacy!?â
âThatâs why Iâm literally here, Clarisse!â Luke snaps, rubbing his arm. âIâm here to see my best friend!â
âThat girl inside,â Clarisse jerks her head towards the door behind her, anger fuming out of her like cigar smoke. âIs the kindest and most loving person out here at campâliteral sunshine trapped in a humanâs body! She has always been at your side, and you repay her by ditching her to make out with a girl whom, might I just add, youâve just talked to within the goddamn DAY and proceeded to ignore your said best friend.â
âIâm here now-â
Clarisse cuts him off. âLeave.â She pointed down the hallway, to the door out of the Big House. âBefore I lose my shit and chop your head off and use it as a fucking bowling ball with your limbs as the damned pins.â
âLuke,â You weakly call out, loud enough to interrupt what couldâve been Clarisse acting out on her intrusive thoughts, your voice hoarse and dry as if youâve been stuck in a desert without anything to drink.
âY/n,â Luke breathes out, the sound of your voice calming him down as he pushes past the two. As soon as the door opens, you see him smiling at youâthat mischievous smile youâve learned to love the past three years. He then steps forward, ignoring the glares Clarisse and Chris were giving him. But before he can even get close, you fall back into your bedâsteaming, as if you were burning like a forest fire. Luke immediately rushes to your side, sitting on the bed, holding your hand in his. Worry and fear was visible in his features, the scar on the right side of his face resembling tears running down his cheek as fear slowly crept into his mind. âFuck, youâre burning, melody.â
âWhat?â Chris asks, frozen in placeâworry replacing glare he once had. âI thought Lee already gave her ambrosia!â
âHe did!â Clarisse says, seemingly forgetting her anger towards the older Hermes boy as she rushes to your side. âGave her two cubes!â
âCall Lee, Michael, or Dawn! Now!â Luke barks at the two, looking around the room for anything to help cool you down, even though Luke knew that a fever like this wasnât easily fixable by a cool rag or something. âNow!â
Clarisse immediately scrambles to get your siblings, looking like she had seen a ghost, dark curls following her every move.
Chris then stares Luke down, seemingly getting over his initial worry for you as his glare intensifies by the second. âGet out.â he spits out harshly. âGet the fuck out before I forget that youâre my brother.â
Luke looks at his brother, matching his intense glare. âI donât give a damn, Rodriguez,â he hisses, refusing to leave your side like a clinging child.
âGet. The. Fuck. Out.â Chris enunciates each word with venom, his eyes flashing with hate and anger.
âShe called me! She wants me! She needs me!â Luke let go of your hand, standing up to face his brother as he tried to argue, but Chris wasnât having it.
âGo fuck Lacy for all we care,â Chris pushes him by the chestâdespite being a full two inches smaller than his older brother. âSince you chose her over your best friend.â
Before Luke could even react, your siblingsâLee and Dawnâcame rushing into the room, just in time to prevent gods knows what. Luke moved to the side, giving your brother and sister room to work, while still glaring at his brother. How dare he? The counselor of cabin eleven thought, forcing himself to calm back down for your sake. He felt miserable, that he had caused this. He wanted nothing more than to see you be happy, healthy, and well, you.
Luke averted his gaze away from his brother, chocolate brown eyes helplessly staring at your unconscious form. You looked so worn out, almost as if someone had drained every bit of your life force.
âGet your punk ass out of here right now,â Clarisse hissed, yanking Lukeâs arm, trying to drag him out.
âLet go of me, you little shit,â Luke growled, like a lion defending its territory. âIâm not leaving her-â
âGet out!â Lee snapped, looking over his shoulder with a murderous look in his eyes. âBefore I give you all hives, boils, anything available in the book!â
âBut-â
âGet out!â
And with that, Chris and Clarisse dragged Luke out of the Infirmary.
âLet me go!â Luke struggled in their hold, every cell of his body wantingâneedingâto get back to his girl, his melody. âS-She needs me!â
âCalm the fuck down, for Christâs sake!â Chris sighs, letting go of his hold on his older brother. âEven if we both let you go, Lee and Dawn arenât going to let you inside, you stupid dumb fuck!â
âDamn you, damn all of you!â Luke angrily yells at Chris and Clarisse, and probably at everyone else.
âShut the hell up, Castellan!â Clarisse yelled, annoyed at his stupid behavior. âStop acting like youâre the victim here, you whiny bitch!â
Luke ran a hand through his curls in complete frustration, muttering incoherent words as he tried hard not to pull all his hair out of his scalp.
âGet a grip, dumbass!â Clarisse threatened, on the verge of acting on her intrusive thoughts. âBefore I smack some sense into your sorry ass!â
Surprisingly, Luke didnât fight or argue back. It wasnât that he couldnât fight back, but this girl in front of him was ruthless. More than anyone else at camp. And if she threatens someone, thereâs a ninety nine percent that she will do whatever she says.
Luke sighed, quickly fixing his composure, glaring at Chris and Clarisse for a minute at most, before turning his heel and leaving the Big House, not even bothered to take a look back.
âMelody, I love you,â Luke whispers in your ear. âPlease be mine, I promise to never hurt you again.â
âLuke,â You sigh, looking him straight in his eyesâdeep brown that holds your heart. âI love you too.â
The sun slowly crept through the curtains, waking you up, tearing you away from your dreams. Your eyes flutter open, squinting as they adjust to the light as if it was the first time in a long while.
âMorninâ sleepy head,â A voice echoes through the roomâs four corners, snapping you fully awake. Your eyes dart towards the voiceâs direction, meeting a familiar set of chocolate brown eyes youâve stared into more times you could ever count paired with that signature smile of his that made his scar just below his right eye, practically fade. âAbout time you woke up.â
âLuke?â You mumble, thinking that you were still dreaming.
âGotta be quiet now, melody,â Luke moves closer to you, giving you a better view of himâlooking as handsome as ever. âNo one knows Iâm here.â He points to a New York Yankees cap dangling from his belt loop. âI sneaked in.â
âWhat? You snuck in?â You ask, brows knitted in confusion. âWhyâd you sneak in? Itâs not like youâre not allowed to be in here.â
Luke scratches the nape of his neck, avoiding your gaze. âAbout thatâŚ.â
You raise a brow at him, arms folded in front of your chest. âLuke, whatâs going on? Donât lie to me, I know when youâre lying.â
âOf course you do,â Luke chuckles, shaking his head. He then takes a deep breath, looking you straight in the eyes. âChris and Clarisse wonât let me see you, while youâre here, unconscious.â
You crack a small smile, the light you always had, returning to your eyes. âWhat? Why? I mean, theyâre literally three, four years younger than both of us and they bested you?â
Luke smiles at you sheepishly. âYeah, well, Clarisse isnât someone Iâd like to cross.â
âYou and me both,â You chuckle, sitting up straight. âSo, how long was I out? Two, three hours?â
Lukeâs smile falters, hesitation in his eyes. âYouâve been here for a week, melody.â
âWâŚwhat? A wâŚwhat!?â You stutter in disbelief. âOne whole week!?â
âApparently, your insides burned because of too much ambrosia intake.â Luke explains with a look of worry in his eyes. âYou got everyone worried, melody.â
âHow much did they give me?â
âLee swears he gave you only two, but another cube was missing from the table, so they couldnât be sure if it was only two.â
âOh.â
Luke raises a brow at you, a knowing smirk on his lips. âYou donât happen to know anything, huh, melody?â
You stare at him in disbelief. How is it that he knows when Iâm lying but not that Iâm head over heels for him? âI may or may not have grabbed another cube, a week ago.â
Luke shakes his head with a chuckle. âAnd I thought I was the one, what was that you always say? Who doesnât follow orders?â
You roll your eyes at him, your lips curling up into a smile. âShut up, Castellan.â
âYou love me, L/n.â Luke grins, mischief twinkling in his beautiful brown eyes. Of course, I fucking do. Youâre just too damn stupid to notice.
âDream on,â You chuckle, forcing a fake smile, hoping that he wonât see through it. âSo, how come Clar and Chris wonât let you in?â
Luke hesitates again, avoiding your eyesâa telltale sign that he was guilty. âThey, uh, were, uh mad at me. For, you know? Ditching you.â
Oh. Thatâs why they were arguing a week ago, apparently. You understood why Clarisse and Chris wouldnât let Luke in, they were only concerned for you. But it wasnât a valid reason to keep him out, when itâs him that youâve always wanted to be right beside you.
You force out another smileâmaybe you were a pro, at this pointâtaking his hand in yours. âI donât mind, charming,â you say, gripping his hand tighter. âAs long as youâre happy, Iâm happy.â
Luke looks at you. âYou sure? I mean, I donât want to put our friendship on the line because of my girlfriend.â
âGirlfriend?â You choked out, shock evident in your eyes, but you pushed it down like you always do. âI mean, how? When? I remember the two of you just talkingâŚâ
âJust two days ago,â Luke answers with a confident smile. âIâm in love with her, melody, I really am. After that failed quest my stupid father gave me, I think I finally got something rightâher.â
You didnât know how to feel. You felt numb, as if your heart couldnât break anymore than it already has. Here he was, happy to tell you that heâs finally done something right in his life. Not knowing how itâs breaking you, piece by piece, tear by tear, beating you down until you canât anymore. But, you canât do a thing. You donât have any right to get hurt, angry, and broken-hearted. After all, you were only his best friend, nothing more.
You gave him a smile with every strength you could muster. âGood for you, Luke. Iâm-â you took a shaky breath, hoping you could blame it on the drowsiness if he asked. âProud of you, finally getting the love you deserve.â If happy is her, then Iâm happy for youâat least, Iâll try to be.
Luke leans forward, wrapping you a tight hug. âThanks, melody,â He whispers in your ear. âYouâre the best.â
You pat him on the back, wishing you could just hit him hard enough to knock some sense into him, make him realize that you were hereâright in fucking front of him. âAnytime, charming.â
Luke pulls away, giving you a kiss on the cheek before ruffling your already messy hair. âYou rest well, okay?â
âSays the one without burnt insides,â
âWe all have rough days and itâs okay not to feel a hundred percent all the time.â Luke assures you with a soft smile. âYouâre gonna pick yourself up, and get back out there. Be easy on yourself, alright?â
You raise a brow at him, laughing softly. âWhen did you become so wise?â
âTurns out, hanging out at cabin six makes you wise.â Luke laughs, rising to his feet. âIâve got to go, alright, melody? I donât want Clarisse to kick my ass, again, if she catches me here. Anyway, we have a game of capture the flag next friday. Chironâs pushed it back long enough, if you ask me.â
âAlready?â You ask, pushing strands of your hair away from your face. âWhat day is it?â
âYouâve been out cold for a week, melody,â Luke chuckles, shaking his head, his curls looking as messy as ever. âItâs Thursday today, Chiron announced last night.â
âDamn,â you mutter under your breath. âI missed a lot, huh?â Like you making Lacy officially your girlfriend.
âDon't you worry your pretty little head, you can jump back into it as soon as you feel okay.â Luke assures you with a smile, walking towards the door, Annabethâs New York Yankees cap ready in his hands. âNow, get some rest.â
You nodded, playfully rolling your eyes, as if you werenât already dying of heartache and a headache from all the information youâve just ingested. âYes, I will. Donât worry too much about me.â
âWhen youâre better, meet me at our spot.â Luke gave you a lopsided grin. âWeâll spar, but donât worry, Iâll go easy on you.â
âAlright,â You fake a smile so normally, reaching for the bottled water on the bedside table. âIâm sure gonna beat up your sorry ass.â
âAs if,â Luke scoffs, a teasing smirk playing on his lips. âYou canât beat me.â
You stuck your tongue out at him. âI sure can, dummy.â
Luke snorts, adjusting the Yankees cap to his size. âWeâll see.â He then places the cap on top of his head, his body disappearing right in front of your eyes. âRest.â
You chuckle, smilingâgenuinelyâat him. âI will, thanks for the visit, charming.â
âFor the love of dad, Lee,â You groan, glaring at your younger brother, lips pouting like a little kid. âItâs been twenty four hours! Iâm better now!â
âLet me check first!â Lee counters, ripping open a tongue depressor. âPlease, just let me checkâto make sure that youâre actually healed.â
âI told you, Iâm oka-â
âIâm going to bound you to that bed if you donât shut up and let me do the freaking examination.â Lee cuts you off, effectively shutting you up. He sounded just like you, it was scary, to say the least.
âDamn, he sounds like you, sunshine.â Chris laughs from the doorway behind Lee. âYou better now?â
âShe would know by now if sheâd just let me fu-â
âJust do the damn exam.â You grumble, sinking into the bed, your arms folded over your chest like a little girl arguing with an adult as you glared at your younger brother. âDonât fucking swear.â
âBut you do,â Lee retorts, pushing the depressor into your mouth, flat against your tongue, checking for burns cleverly caused by his sister who should have known better. âSo, why shouldnât I?â
âIâm gonna bite off your fingers, try me.â You say out through the depressor pressing over your tongue, your gag reflex activating causing you to grimace at the feeling. âI der ya.â
You hear Chris snort, earning him a glare from you. âWhat?â He laughs at your annoyance. âYou sound like a toddler.â
You glare at him, raising your middle finger at him. âYuck you.â
Lee, who was checking your throat, bursts out laughing. âYouâre better, alright.â
You yank the depressor out of your mouth, the taste of wood still lingering on your taste buds. âIâm better, fine, good, all fixed. Can I go now or do I have to stay and be tortured by your annoying ass presence?â
Lee nods, a teasing grin plastered on his face. âGo, just donât tire yourself. No stress for this day, at least, for godsâ sake.â
You roll your eyes at him, sitting up and reaching below for your shoes. âI know what to do, dummy.â You quickly put on your shoes, tucking the laces inside so that they donât cause another accident before standing up. âIâve been a healer much longer than you, thank you very much.â
âYeah, right,â Lee mutters, throwing the wooden paraphernalia into a nearby bin. âSays the girl who burned her insides.â
âShut up,â You hiss at your brother, resisting the urge to just smack him upside the head like the doofus he is. Brothers, geez. You canât stand them but you canât imagine life without them. You then grabbed a hair tie from your pocket, strands of your hair falling as you pulled your hair up into a messy ponytail. âIâm going to go find Luke.â
âHim?â Chris scoffs, rolling his eyes. âHeâs literally the reason why you got sick, sunshine.â
âNonsense,â You dismissively wave Chris off. âIt was my fault, I forgot to drink water.â
âYeah, right,â Chris rolls his eyes at you, not believing any of your bullshit, as Clarisse would call it. âYou forgot to drink water on a hot summer, because my stupid ass older brother broke your heart?â
âDonât you have someplace to be?â You grumble, picking up your guitar before making your way to the door. âLuke is still my best friend, Iâm not just going to ignore him.â
Chris scowls playfully at you, placing his hands on his hips. âThen what am I? A tree?â
You chuckle, moving towards him and pinching his cheek, making him wince. âYou, my friend, are like a little brother to me.â
Chris pulls your hand away from his cheek, still wincing from how hard you pinched him. âLittle? Iâm literally taller than you, sunshine.â
âSemantics,â You rolled your eyes, smiling at him. âTall or short, big or small, or whatever the hell you want, youâre still like a brother to me.â
âThen,â Chris chuckles. âYou are the best big sister anyone could have. Right, Lee?â
Lee nods his head vigorously. âThe best, one hundred percent. Cabin seven is lucky to have you, sis!â
Your cheeks blaze pink, as you smile from ear to ear. âGee, thanks guys,â You bow playfully. âGlad Iâm appreciated around here.â
âUnlike some people.â Chris mutters loud enough for you to hear.
âHe does,â You insist, your dadâs stubbornness shining through you like beams of light. âLuke appreciates me, I know it. He wouldnât have visited me yesterday while I was out if he didnât.â
Chris raised a brow. âOh, did he now? I think Iâm gonna have a word with this dear brother of mine.â
âChris,â you say in a warning tone. âBe nice.â
âFine, fine,â Chris sighs. âDonât say we didnât warn you, sunshine.â
âI am this close to cursing you with the sweating sickness.â
âGo,â Lee laughs, pushing you out the door. âYour prince charming awaits.â
The late summer afternoon sun was still hot against your skin as you excitedly made your way to find Luke, practically skipping as you threaded through the North Woods, to the place you and Luke call your escape from being the pillars of camp.
Only the two of you know about it. You and Luke swore on the River Styx to never tell anyone of the little hidden paradise the both of you had grown to call your own. It was the place you could be happy, the place you could have Luke all to your own.
âNot so fast!â Someone snarled, yanking on your hair, grabbing your bow and arrows. âGive me the fucking flag!â
âLuke!â You screamed, struggling against the pull at your hair. âA little help!â
Luke whipped his head around, anger immediately coursing through his veins. The sight of you struggling at the hands of an older Ares boy ignited a flame inside of him. Nobody hurts her.
Luke charged at him, making you yelp at the tug of your hair. The son of Ares was using you as a shield against Lukeâand Luke wasnât liking any bit of it.
âLet her go!â Luke roared, trying his best to attack and not hurt you. âYou big dumbasss!â
âJust give me the fucking flag!â The son of Ares growled, pulling your hair harder, causing a sharp pain in your scalpâyou were sure if he let go of you, all of your hair would fall out. âAnd Iâll spare both of you!â
âNever.â Luke growled, quickly planning an attack. Being the child of Hermes had its perks, as Luke was quick to move. Luke charged like an angered bull, taking the older boy by surprise, knocking you off of his grasp. The son of Hermes slammed the hilt of his sword against the son of Aresâ chest armor, causing it to dent and making him stumble. âNow, get the fuck out before I chop you into pieces.â
The son of Ares immediately scrambled away. âWeâre not over, Castellan! Weâll get that flag one way or another!â
âYeah? Try me.â
Luke turned his attention to you, almost tripping on a rock as he ran towards you. âYou alright, melody?â
âYeah, Iâm okay.â You grunt, adjusting the strap of your armor. Seeing Lukeâs worried look, you sighed. âHair pulling isnât gonna give me a concussion, donât worry.â
âIf that fucker comes back, Iâm gonna-â You pinch him on the arm, making him yelp. âOuch, woman! That hurts!â
You rolled your eyes. âQuit being a baby.â
âViolence is never the answer! Iâm not the enemy, so donât attack me!â Luke grumbled, rubbing his arm where you had attacked him.
âLetâs just go and hide.â
âDo we have to hide?â Luke asks, gripping his sword, ready for defense. âI mean, we can fightâI can fight.â
âI am not going to fight when I can just hide.â
âThen whatâs the point of capture the flag if you arenât even fighting to keep the flag safe from the opposing team?â Luke folded his arms over his armored chest. âItâs a war game for a reason, melody.â
You roll your eyes at him, shaking your head in annoyance. He was really persistent, but you wouldnât have him in any other way. âOne, we have the flag. Weâre supposed to keep it safe, so we should be hiding it. Two, I am not in the mood to heal you if you get hurtâwhich will probably happen, because I know you.â
âCome on,â Luke whined, tugging at the blue flag in your hands. âWe can win this, I know it!â
âWe can win this,â You nodded. âIf you quit being a pain in the ass.â
Luke scowled. âI am not a pain, thank you very much.â
You snort, raising your hand up to wipe off the dirt on Lukeâs face. âYes, you fucking are.â
Before Luke could retort, you hear yelling just meters away from where you and Luke were standing.
âTheyâre over there!â
You immediately realize who it wasâit was the boy who Luke had bested just minutes ago.
âGreat,â You groaned, simultaneously, Luke pumped his fist up in the air.
âIdiot.â You muttered before grabbing Lukeâs wrist, dragging him away.
Despite his protests, you keep your grip on him. You werenât gonna let him pick a fight just because he wanted to.
âThere!â You hear the yells of the opposing team getting loud and closer. âIâm going to fucking rip his head off!â
You spot a cave just a few meters away. It would be a good hiding spot, just until the furious Ares kids leave the two of you alone.
âLet me at âem!â Luke tried pulling his hand away from your grasp. âI can handle them!â
âNo!â You snap at him, dragging him towards the direction of the caveâs entrance, almost tripping as you dragged the stubborn Hermes boy despite his annoyed protests.
The two of you stumble into the darkened grotto just in the nick of time, practically shoving Luke inside. You leaned against the stone wall, trying to catch your breath, hoping those sons of Ares wonât get the idea to look inside. You immediately pulled your necklace out of your shirt. The sun shaped locket your father gave you started to glow, illuminating your face in the darkness.
âYou shouldâve let me fight them,â Luke grumbled, chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath like you did. âI wouldâve beat their asses!â
âIf I did they wouldâve got the flag from me, dummy!â You retorted, letting go of the chain of your necklace, letting it dangle over the camp's logo on your shirt. âQuit being reckless!â
Luke scowled, slumping onto the ground. You could see beads of sweat all over his forehead down to his neck. âIâm not reckless.â
âYes, you are.â
âAm not.â
âYou are.â
âNuh uh!â
âUh huh!â
Luke rolled his eyes, a small smile creeping its way to his lips. âI mean, I guess I am a little bit reckless.â
You raised a brow at him. âOnly a little bit?â
âOkay fine,â Luke sighed, shaking his head with a laugh. âIâm reckless, are you happy now?â
âDelighted.â You grin at him, wiping sweat off of your forehead with the back of your hand. The two of you then sat in silence for what felt like hoursâit was only a few minutesâthe sounds of yours and Lukeâs breathing accompanying the dim light of your locket.
âSo, where exactly are we?â Luke asks, breaking the momentary silence. âNever seen this cave before.â
âI actually donât know,â You answer, looking around the poorly lit enclosure. âPretty sure weâre barely past Zeusâ fist, so we donât have to worry about being too far out.â
âZeusâ fist?â Luke snorts. âWhat? Mister king of the gods had a tantrum and punched camp?â
âItâs a clump of rocks that look like a fist,â You laugh, rolling your eyes at Lukeâs humor. âAlthough, some call it Zeusâ shit, since it looks like a clump of Pegasus shit.â
Luke burst out laughing, throwing his head back like a little kid. âNice name, fits mister grumpy pants. Thalia wouldâve loved that!â he says in between fits of laughter.
âShe would,â you smiled, knowing how much Luke missed Thaliaâhis first best friend. You didnât know much about Thalia, but knowing from the stories Luke has told you before, he was right. âThalia wouldâve loved it.â
âYeah, she wouldâve,â Luke sighed, smiling softly. âHey, melody?â
âMhm?â
âDo you think anyone else knows about this cave?â
âI donât think so,â you shrug, looking around. âThis place looks soâŚdark, you know? And besides, the Ares kids havenât found us yet. So, itâs safe to say that no one else knows about this place.â
âOur own place.â
âIâm sorry, what?â
âThis could be our own place,â Luke explained with a grin, his eyes shining with a familiar excitement youâve seen before in his chocolate eyes. âSomewhere only we know.â
âItâs dark here,â You say, your nose wrinkling in disgust. You never really liked the dark. As a child, it had been your worst nightmare. Your mother would always set up a nightlight just so you wouldnât get terrified of the possible creatures that lurked in the dead of the night. When you got to camp, your father had given you your locket to help you cope with the darkness and being alone since your mother couldnât really help you with your fears anymore. âI donât really like the dark.â
âWe could add some torches outside, plus some inside, maybe those streamer light things tooâwe just gotta figure out how to add this without power, but I think I can ask that Beckendorf kid for a favor. A few crates we can stack up for a bed when we need itâI can grab an extra sleeping bag from the camp store. And some throw pillows here and there and itâll feel like home.â
âYou canât possibly think that this dark cave could feel like a home,â You argued, folding your arms over your chest. Realizing that youâve covered the only source of light in the dark, you quickly tugged on your chain, pulling it from below your arms.
âI lived in a cave once.â Luke says casually, shrugging his shoulders. âItâs not that bad, honestly. You just got to use your artistic eyeâyou do have that, donâtcha?â
âIâm not going to get my way, am I?â
âNope!â
You rolled your eyes at him, smiling despite losing another decision to the boy right in front of you. âFine,â you groan playfully. âYou better make this place as bright as my cabin.â
âNot that bright, but of course, my sweet darlinâ melody!â
You smile, taking it all in. Youâve never had something as intimate as this, and it felt good, somehow. A place you can call your own, now who wouldnât want that? âOur own place,â
âOur own place.â Luke repeated, contentment in his voice. âSwear on the River Styx?â
âWhat for?â
âIf this is gonna be our little escape from camp duties, we should at least keep it a secret from everyone else.â
You raised a brow at him. âEven from Annabeth?â
Luke rolled his eyes. âYes, even from Annabeth.â
âPretty sure sheâs gonna find out either way, but yeah sure, we can swear on it.â
âI, Luke Castellan, swear on the River Styx to never tell anyone of this place.â
âI, Y/n L/n, swear on the River Styx to never tell anyone of this place.â
The sound of the conch rang out from the distance, signifying the end of the game, and since the flag was still in your hands, your team had won.
âDid we win?â
âWe did!â You squeal, grinning from ear to ear like a child on Christmas eve. âWe won! We actually won!â
âCome on, letâs rub our victory in their faces,â Luke grinned, his eyes shining with that familiar mischief youâve come to adore, dramatically offering his hand out for you to take. âShall we, my lady?â
âWe shall,â You giggle, grabbing his hand as the two of you make your way out of the dimly lit space.
From that day on, you and Luke have decorated the place to look as cozy as possible. The both of you would spend as much time as possible together, usually sparring outside the cave or just catching up on the sleep youâve missed from waking up early in the mornings. Sometimes, youâd bring your art supplies and paint little murals all over the walls. Luke even carved yours and his initials on one side of the walls and painted them goldâin Lukeâs words, because, our friendship is worth more than gold. This little cave was your escape from reality. Where Luke is yours, and you are hisâeven just in your imagination.
You sigh happily as you spot your little hidden paradise, blazing greek fire on torches set up just at the entrance. You practically skipped towards the cave, a huge grin plastered on your face.
âLuke? Are you here, charming?â you call out, your voice sounding a little giddy as you make your way inside, following the dim light insideâwhich Luke probably lit beforehand. âIâm here! Iâm ready to beat your ass!â
As you approach closer to the light, you hear faint moaning? What in the name of Hades is he moaning for? You thought, brows knitting in confusion as you moved cautiously forward, pulling the strap of your guitar over your head. He better not be jerking off again. I swear to the gods above Iâm going to hit him with my guitar.
Youâve only caught him in the act once, and it was enough for you and Luke to resort to calling before coming inâwhich you did, and debating whether to do it again because you did not want to see how males relieve themselves again ever in this lifetime.
You sigh heavily as you make your way inside of yours and Lukeâs secret hide out, desperate for a little sleep before getting back into your duties as one of the head counselors. Your fourth archery class was in two hours, and you were already debating whether you should leave it for Dawn to handle because you were absolutely aching to get a well deserved rest, practically begging Hypnos to put you into a peaceful nap right there and then.
As you walk past the buckets of paint you left from the last mural you made, you hear muffled sounds coming from inside. Immediately, you thought of Luke being injured or in painâhis recklessness usually got him into unsavory circumstances, and it was honestly so stupid of him most of the time. But youâve never heard him like this before, and it made you worry. Maybe he got stabbedâwhich was highly unlikely, knowing how good he is with a swordâand was scared to tell you, knowing youâd bound him to a bed in the infirmary this time. Whatever it is, you were ready to hit him on the head for it. Perhaps even curse him with the sweating sickness for, well, being a pain in the ass (you love him for it, so you most likely wonât).
Sighing, you finally make your way towards him, hands in your pockets searching for something that could helpâband aids, ambrosia, anythingâease whatever pain Luke was feeling. Hopefully, it isnât that bad and fixable with the few cubes of ambrosia in a pouch inside your pocket.
âJesus, Luke!â you shriek, immediately closing your eyes shut, pulling your hands out of your pockets and covering your eyes for added, well, coverage from what you just saw.
âShit, shit, shit,â you hear Luke say as he quicklyâas you assumedâpulled his boxers and pants up, before the sound of his footsteps echo in your ear. âYou saw thatâŚ?â
âWhat do you think, dumbass?â you hiss, eyes still closed shut as you attempted to cross one arm over the other against your chest.
âMaybe next time, call first?â
âYou think?â
âYou can open your eyes now, Mel,â Luke says with a chuckle. âYou gave me blue balls, but Iâm decent now.â
âNuh uh,â you shake your head. âI donât trust you.â
âYou wound me, miss Y/n L/n, daughter of the god of truth-â
âYour dad is a liar. You said so-â
âYou think Iâd ever lie to you, melody?â Luke snorts. âJust open your eyes, drama queen.â
âItâs not my fault Iâm scarred for life!â You grumble, reluctantly opening your eyes, relieved that Luke was decent looking at least even though his belt was undone and the zipper was half way upâwhich you just chose to ignore. âGods of Olympus, I think I need to get therapy!â
âYeah, yeah,â Luke rolls his eyes sarcastically. âItâs not my fault you just waltzed in without announcing yourself.â
You scoffed, glaring at him. âWell, Iâm sorry for thinking that you were injured or something, dumbass!â
âCome here,â Luke opens his arms out for a hug, giving you an apologetic smile. âIâm sorry, mel-â
âEw, wash your hands first!â
Luke burst out laughing. âReally?â
âI am not hugging you until your hands are a hundred percent disinfected, Castellan.â
âFine,â Luke laughs, turning his back to get the shoe box sitting on the ground, placing the cover back on top. âLet me just bring this back to eleven, and then you can supervise me in disinfecting my hands.â
âWhat even is that?â you ask, peering over Lukeâs shoulder.
âOh, trust me. You donât want to know.â
Realizing what he meant, you visibly cringed. âOh, dear gods,â you say, your nose wrinkling in disgust. âYou are disgusting, you know that?â
âYou gotta do what you gotta do,â Luke smirks. âIt hurts, if not relieved properly.â
âStop, stop,â you shake your head, covering your ears. âI do not need a lesson on the male reproductive system.â
âIt is what it is, melody.â
âShut up,â
âNext time, call first, alright?â Luke chuckles, placing the box under his arm. âYell if you have to.â
âNoted. And next time, give me a fucking heads up an hour before you want to doâŚthat.â
âYou do know that your brothers probably jerk off too, you know?â
âI swear to my dad Iâm going to kill you of you donât stop, Luke-â
Luke smirks, slinging his other arm over your shoulders. âYou love me,â
I do, you think as the two of you make your way out. âBut that does not mean you can annoy me to death.â
âAh, but thatâs my purpose, my friend.â
âYou are absolutely, a hundred percent, annoying, Luke.â
âI think you mean, absolutely, a hundred percent, charming?â
âNope,â you chuckle as Luke scoffs playfully. âYouâre definitely an annoying little shit.â
âYeah, well, Iâm your annoying little shit.â
âThe one and only.â
âLuke?â you call out his name again, this time a little louder. What is he doing? He better not be doing what I think he is, or I am definitely going to kill him.
âLuke-â A gasp escapes your lips at the scene playing right in front of your eyes. Suddenly, you felt like a statue, stuck staring despite the voices in your head begging you so desperately not to.
Luke was half naked, leaning against the wall, his jeans unbuckled and hanging loosely around his waist. And there was Lacy, straddling him, hands roaming absolutely everywhere. Her manicured hand trailing up and down his bare, scarred chest while the other was threading through his chocolate curls as he kissed her like it was the end of the fucking world. Luke's hands slowly crept down, one hand snaking around her waist, pulling her closer and the other trailing up under her shirt and up to her breasts, emitting a sound you never wanted to ever hear. The sounds of their moans kept ringing in your ears, haunting you with every second you stood frozen. Gods, at this point, you wanted to pop your eardrums just to be free of this involuntary torture.
But that wasn't even the worst part. It was the fact that, a few inches up, you could see a pair of initials drawn messily with red lipstick right over yours and Lukeâs.
L + L
He was putting her over you, literally and physically.
You knew this was going to happen from the very moment Luke told you about his relationship, but you didnât expect it to be so soon. Angry tears started to prick the corners of your eyes, threatening to spill at any second. You tried your best to push them back, but it felt like an overflowing dam. Your grip on your guitar loosens as your tears slowly cloud your vision. The wooden instrument slips from your hold, shattering into tiny unfixable pieces from the impact, just like your heart. At the sound of the instrument breaking, Lukeâs head whips around, spotting you. His face immediately drains of color, knowing his faults.
âShit-â Luke pushes Lacy off of him, causing her to yelp as he quickly makes his way towards you. But you turn to run off before he could even catch up. âY/n, wait!â he calls after you as you run out of yours and Lukeâs once secret place.
You kept on going, running and ignoring Lukeâs pleas for you to stop and talk to him. You felt very betrayed, very heartbroken, and very angry. How could Luke do this to me? You kept on asking yourself as tears kept clouding your vision like an endless fog while you ran through the woods without any direction. You wanted to stop and face Luke, to scream at him for being so clueless about your feelings and for hurting you. But you couldnât, you just canât. The image of him entangled with that girl was burned into your mind, refusing to let you get away from its grasp as the memory replayed again and again like a broken record. Oh, how you wanted to gouge your own eyes out and drown them in bleach until the image of them faded completely out of your mind, unfortunately, you are a prisoner of your own thoughts.
And even if you could muster up the courage, you didnât have the right to do so. You were just his friend, nothing more. You were just this person he could count on whenever he needed something. He doesnât care about your feelings if or not you get hurt by his choices, because you didnât mean much to him the way Lacy meant to him. You wanted so badly for your heart and mind to just realize that crucial fact, but like your father, you were just as stubborn. Gods, fucking gods, how cruel are they to damn you like this? What the hell did you do to invoke the ire of the gods and get this kind of suffering?
âY/n, will you stop for a second!?â Luke managed to catch up on you, grabbing you by the arm and pulling you towards him like a force of a thousand magnets.
Your hands immediately found your eyes, wiping off every tear as much as you could, trying your absolute hardest to look normal. As if you werenât hanging onto the balance of anger and hurt.
âHey, hey, hey,â Lukeâs voice was suddenly gentle and soft, his hands moving upward to cup your cheeks, slightly titling your face up so you could meet his eyes. âAre you okay, melody? Whatâs wrong? You know you can tell me anything.â
âYeah, Iâm-Iâm good,â You sniffle, shifting your gaze away from him. How stupid is he to not see through you? âJust had a really shitty day.â
Luke sighs as he wraps his arms around you, his lips pressing against your forehead, burning into your skin. âIâm so sorry about-â
âItâs okay,â you cut him off with a shaky breath, pushing yourself away from his hold. You wanted so badly to bury yourself in his chest, like you always did whenever Luke hugged you, to breathe in his scent, but you couldnât bring yourself to do it. Knowing that Lacy had already claimed her territory. âI-I have to go,â You choked back a sob, wiping away the fresh tears falling from your eyes as you turned your back on him. âLotsâŚlots of stuff to do.â
âY/n, wait-â Luke tries to stop you, his hand on your armâholding onto you like a vice he didnât want to let goâbut you pulled your arm away and just walked away without taking another look back, because you didnât want to look as desperate as you felt.
You feel your chest tighten as you hear Luke calling your name again and again, his voice slowly fading as the distance between you and him grows farther away. But, you continued to tread on, walking without a sense of direction through the woods. Despite that, there was this lingering feeling in your heart that hoped so badly that Luke would still follow you.
Should I look back? Should I stop? Should IâŚ
No, Luke isnât behind you anymore. He doesnât care about you. He doesnât give a damn about you. You are nothing to him. He loves Lacy, not you. And he will never love you.
Havenât I given enough? I mean, I gave Luke my best meâs-
You arenât her.
You arenât Lacy.
What does she fucking have that I donât?
You will never be her.
You snap out of your thoughts as you fall onto your hands and knees, gasping for air as the tears you were trying your absolute hardest to push back now flowed down your cheeks like an endless stream. You couldnât keep it in anymore, it was just too much for you to handle all at once. It was suffocating, as if Lord Eros had shot an arrow straight through your throat, purposely missing your heart, and with a taunting voice heâs telling you âYou donât deserve love!â
âHoly Hephaestus- Beckendorf, get your ass down here for a sec!â You hear someone say, causing you to immediately wipe away tears, dirt smearing all over either side of your face. You see a figure approaching you from your peripheral view, which then you realized where you were. Fire crackled in the distance, the smell of burning metals lingering in the air. âGods of Olympus- Y/n?â The figure knelt in front of you, large calloused hands supporting your weight as your body trembled from the forcing back whatever you felt. Looking up, though still a bit blurry, you recognized the person holding onto you. Marco Leon, head of cabin nine and son of Hephaestusâa familiar face youâve come across multiple times a day in the infirmary.
âAre you alright, Y/n?â Marco asked, lifting your palms away from the ground, placing them onto his shoulders as he helped you stand up, searching you for any cuts or bruises. âWhat happened?â
What happened? Nothing. I just saw the love of my life practically having sex with his new girlfriend. âN-nothing,â You wheezed out, stumbling forward a bit as your chest heaved from trying to stop the tears and catch your breath. âIâm fineâŚâ
âYouâre obviously not fine, Y/n.â Marco shook his head, his face contorting into a look of concern. He slid his arm around your waist, careful not to make you feel uncomfortable but enough to keep you steady on your feet. âCome on, letâs get you seated for a sec.â
Marco led you towards the workshop, where surprisingly only one of his siblingsâCharles Beckendorfâwas waiting, confusion evident in his features as you approached.
âHoly- What did you do, Marco?â
âI didnât do anything wrong! She tripped!â Marco defended, helping you onto one of the work benches around. âQuick, get the first aid kit!â
âNo,â You say, shaking your head, your voice hoarse and dry as you undo your ponytail. âI mean, no thanks. I-I can do it myself.â
âAre you sure?â Marco grabbed the first aid kit from his brother, opening it. âYouâve got a pretty nasty scrape, there.â
You smile weakly, pushing back a few strands of your hair away from your face, cringing slightly at the feeling of dirt dried up on your skin. âItâs fine, donât worry.â
âAlright,â Marco smiled, giving you an alcohol pad and gauze along with the tiniest roll of paper tape, which you gladly accepted with a small nod.
Ripping open the alcohol pad, you pressed it against your skinned knee, wiping any debris and bacteria away, a whimper escaping your lips at the burning sensation of the disinfecting wipe. You then repeated the process on your other knee, before placing the used pad on your lap and opening one of the gauze packs.
âHere, let me help with this, at least.â Marco offered, grabbing the roll of tape, tearing off a piece. âPut the gauze over the scrape, and Iâll secure it down.â
âThanks,â You squeaked, eyes widening at how horrendous that sounded. Gods, why canât I do anything right? âIâm so sorry for being a bother-â
âYouâre not bothering anyone, trust me,â Marco chuckled, meeting your eyes with a kind smile. âYouâve been taking care of everyone at this camp, itâs just right to return the favor.â
Marco pulled another piece of tape, only for it to reach the end of the roll. âShit,â he muttered under his breath, reaching for the medical kit and rummaging for another roll of paper tape, letting out a huff at the unsuccessful search. âGuess weâll just have to make do with this little thing.â
He tore off the paper-clip sized piece off of the roll, placing it on the bottom side, so that the whole gauze wouldnât fall off. It didnât really make a difference, since your other knee was still bareâthough, sanitized, at least.
You muttered a quick thank you, before taking a deep breath, composing whatâs left ofâŚwhatever the hell you had left. âGods, this is so embarrassing, you know?â
Marco raised a brow, closing the incomplete box of first aid necessities and passing it to his brother, who ran with it to god knows where, leaving you alone with the senior counselor of cabin nine. âWhat is?â
âHead healer, being a dumbass, getting herself injured and canât even properly heal said injuriesâand the worst part, the injury was only a scrape, a fucking scrape.â
âStop that,â Marco sat right next to you, shoulders brushing against one another. âYou have got to stop discrediting yourself, Y/n. You are an amazing healer, sister, friend, and person. From what Iâve seen you do over the years, Iâm confident to say that you are the most selfless person here at camp.â
âYouâre just saying that because-â
Marco placed his hand on your shoulder, your eyes suddenly meeting hisâchocolate brown, just like Lukeâs. I canât even talk to another without thinking of him, gods, what is wrong with me? âYou take care of everyone, honestly, but who takes care of you?â
âI-IâŚâ Words refuse to come out of your mouth, leaving you like one of your blank canvas. Marco was right, and it pains you to admit it. Youâve always been the caretaker, but never the one cared for. Sure, your siblings and friends care for you, but at the end of the day, itâs still you who looks after everyoneâespecially him. If Luke Castellan ever needed tending to or help with practically anything, youâre there by his side, just like how Icarus was drawn to the sun. You often forget to take care of yourself, even the simplest of tasks like eating or drinking, slips out of your mind whenever Luke or someone needs your help. Itâs almost an endless cycle, fixing everyoneâs problem until itâs you whoâs stuck with something you canât muster up the courage to ever get a solution.
When was the last time you even had time for yourself? Gods, you felt pathetic. At this point you think itâs all youâll ever be, as terrible as it is, a pathological people pleaser.
âCome on,â Marco pulls you out of your self loathing. âLetâs get you back to your cabin, you need rest.â
âIâm okay,â You mumble, biting the inside of your cheek. Here you go again, acting like youâre fine when youâre not. Taking a deep breath, you meet Marcoâs eyes with a smile. âIâve got to get back to work, you know? I fear my absence this past week has affected a lot.â
Marco shook his head, chuckling at how stubborn you probably looked right now. âStill, I'll walk you back.â
âIâm okay, Marco, I swear-â
âPlease,â His voice was firm, but there was this gentleness in his tone that made your heart flutter a bit. What in Apolloâs name is wrong with me? Ugh!
âOkay, fine.â
Marco quickly rose to his feet, a grin etched onto his handsome- No, I mean, attractive- fuck it face like heâd just won a million dollars in the lottery. âMy lady?â he bowed in front of you, offering his hand out the way Luke always did whenever he was trying to make you laugh after heâd upset you or something. You took his hand, choosing to ignore what your mindâheartâ wants, giving the boy in front of you a small, forced smile as he helped you onto your feet. âShall we?â
You nod, letting go of his hand before it all feels weird and awkward. Gods forbid anyone sees you holding hands with Marco, not that itâs bad or that youâre ashamed, but there is one person you have in mind you would prefer not to see you frolicking like a teenager in love.
Well, you were, in fact, a teenager in love, but not with Marco Leon.
The two of you headed back to the cabins in complete silence. It was honestly deafening, to say the least, you just couldnât bring yourself to utter a single word. With everything thatâs happened today, you wanted nothing more than to run away and hide, to weep like a fucking disney princess in hopes of getting a fairy godmother to appear out of the blue to help solve all of your problems, even if the magic fades after midnight. Oh, what you would give to get that wretched, cursed, image of the boy who owns your heart and soul with thatâŚthat girl out of your mind for all eternity. If it was possible to rearrange and delete memories from your mind, you wouldâve clicked the easiest option out.
As the cabins came into your view, you let out a soft sigh of relief. Heâs not here yet, thank gods. You werenât ready to face him, or her after what youâve just seen in the place that was once exclusive to and your best friend. The thought alone of them kissing made your stomach churn so badly that you wanted to throw up. Oh no, did theyâŚ.continue after Luke got back? You visibly cringed at the thought, gods of Olympus, why was your own mind punishing you like this? You look up at the sky, the sun is setting in the horizon, the serenity of the pink and orange hue in the clouds calming you down.
âAre you free tomorrow?â Marco asked as the two of you approached the vicinity of the cabins, your hands brushing against each other ever so slightly.
âI donât think so,â You hum, your hair blowing against the evening summer breeze. âIâve got to get back to my duties. Archery lessons, music, and arts and crafts, I think? Why?â
âMaybe youâd like these newâŚuh, arrows? Yeah, arrows, thatâs right! Me and Beckendorf made them for you guys. Test them out before, you know, using them.â
âYeah?â You ask, brows furrowed in confusion. âI didnât know we had new arrows coming in.â
âLee approved them, because you were unavailable? You were, you know? Sick?â Marco fumbled over his words, like your younger brother, Will, whenever he gets caught stealing Leeâs flannels.
âOh, well then, I think I could squeeze you into my schedule tomorrow.â You smiled, though, a bit unsure if you could take a few minutes off of your hectic scheduleâthe same routine of events you always do.
âIâll pick you up- no, I mean-â
Before you could utter a response, you heard screaming. âConnor Stoll, get your ass back here!â
What has he done this time? You thought, because you were the one who had to patch the younger Stoll brother whenever he got maimed by the one he was terrorizing. Usually, it was Luke whoâd ask what his menace of a brother did, and the two of you would laugh about it after the said menace was out of earshot.
You see Connor Stoll running in your direction, with that shit eating grin he always has every time heâs successfully pulled off a prank. Behind him was an angry Katie Gardner, with a trowel in her hands as she chased after the speeding little shit- Connor. âGet back here, you little shit!â
âNever!â Connor yelled over his shoulder, zooming in your direction without looking where he was going, colliding into you, causing you to stumble backwards- You have got to be kidding me, falling into Marco Leonâs arms like you were in a goddamn romantic comedy movie.
âHi,â Marco chuckled, his arm wrapped around your waist, holding you steady like you were a canvas and he was the easel. âYou okay?â
âUh, yeah, I-Iâm okayâŚâ
âStollâs a menace,â Marco laughed, helping you back onto your feet in one swift motion, his arm still placed firmly against your waist, his face just a few inches away from yours.
âWhen isnât he?â You let out a shaky laugh, realizing that were probably campers gawking at you and Marco flirting like two leads in a movie. âYouuh, you can let go of me now.â
Embarrassment crept onto his handsome features like a plague, scratching the back of his head like heâd been caught stealing from the Big House or something. âOh, yeah,â he chuckled awkwardly as he helped you back to your feet. âSorry about that.â
âItâs fine, donât worry.â You pat him on the shoulder like an absolute idiot, who the fuck pats a person? At least, no one else saw that, because if someone brings this up sooner or later, you were going to kill Connor Stoll. Though, it seems that everyone has gone to get dinner, and won't be back until after the campfireâwhich, you should be there for, as senior counselor and head of the Apollo cabin. âI guess Iâll see you tomorrow? I mean, if I get the time and all.â
âYeah, of course. Take your time! Iâll be right here- I mean, not here here, but at my cabin, or at the forge. Not here, where weâre currently standing.â
âSee you tomorrow, Marco,â you chuckle, playfully rolling your eyes at him, starting to walk away from the oddly awkward Hephaestus counselor. âIâll try to make time, I promise.â
âWait, youâre not going to eat dinner?â Marco asks, walking three steps behind as you headed to your cabin, which was only next to his own.
âEh,â you shrug, running a hand through your hair, which wasnât as smooth as you wanted it to be. âI think we have a few snacks in the cabin.â
Marco raised a brow, a teasing smile on his lips. âYou gonna survive on snacks alone?â
âI think so, though, it wouldnât be as healthy as Iâd prefer.â
âTell you what,â Marco gently grabs your arm, prompting you to stop in your tracks, now just a few meters away from your cabin. âIâll go grab you something healthy to eat from the pavilion so that you wonât have to make do with that unhealthy junk. How does that sound?â
âYouâd do that for me?â You ask, shocked as to why he would offer such a thing. You werenât a princess, so it doesnât make sense that heâd bring you food like some sort of servant, which he absolutely wasnât. Gods, you felt bad even just thinking about it. Though, a meal sounded nice, since youâve havenât gotten anything to eat yet since youâd left the infirmary.
âOf course! Itâs no trouble, if thatâs what youâre thinking.â Marco assured, letting go of your arm. âWhat about the campfire, though?â
âMy siblings will come looking for me, I suppose.â Foolish of you to think that you could ever get a little time for yourself. Guess youâd never learn your lesson then, dutiful daughter of Apollo. A soft sigh escapes your lips, still reeling high from the events that had come to pass. Dad, I just want the day to end, I want to curl up in my bed and cry myself to sleep. Come on, let me just do this once? I promise Iâll be your perfect, responsible, but broken hearted daughter again!
Marco seemed to notice the change in your tone, his eyes locked with yours, as if he was looking for answers in your gaze. You didnât even understand why he was doing all of this. Yeah, youâve interacted with him every time he comes to you with a broken thumb from accidentally hitting himself with a hammer or well, any injury that comes with being a son of the blacksmith god. He took a step closer, so close to removing the distance that separates the two of you.
âYou deserve rest, after everything you do for all of us here at camp.â Marco tucked strands of your hair behind your ear. âYouâre not a robot, youâre human. They canât make you do anything you donât want to.â
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, you took three steps back, fighting the urge to break down again. You didnât need that, you needed to get over your own feelingsâfigure them out before you lose your own mind trying to fix this mess of a puzzle called you. âOf..of course. I got to go, I-I need some time alone. Thanks, for everything.â
And with that, you turned your back and ran towards your cabin, without looking back.
Luke Castellan, you fucking asshole.
I wish you were here.

Putting the Meta in "Metatron"
(couldn't resist the pun, sorry)
Ok, this has been tickling my brain for a while. I've been thinking about how The Metatron designed his role and discourse specifically to manipulate Aziraphale into the end result we saw in the last minutes of S2. I become obsessed with it because⌠well, I'm a bit obsessive, but also because there were many really smart writing decisions that I loved (even when I despise The Metatron exactly for the same reasons. Hate the character, love the writer). If you haven't watched Good Omens Season 2, this is the moment to stop reading. Come back later!
We already know that in Book Omens, the role of Gabriel in the ending was occupied by The Metatron. Of course, the series introduced us to Gabriel and we won a lot by that, but I feel that the origins of The Metatron should be considered for any of this. He is not a "sweet old man": he was the one in charge of seeing over the operation of Armageddon; not just a stickler of rules, but the main promoter for it.
However, when he appears in the series finale, we first are primed to almost pass him by. He is in the line for buying coffee, using clothes that are:
obviously not tailored (almost ill fitted)
in dark tones
looking worn and wrinkled
This seems so important to me! All the angels we have seen are so proud of their aspect, wear clear (white or off white) clothes, pressed, impeccable (even Muriel), even when they visit the Earth (which we have already seen on S1 with all the visits to the bookshop). The Metatron chose a worn, comfortable attire, instead. This is a humanized look, something that fools all the angels but which would warm up someone very specific, can you guess?
After making quite a complicated coffee order (with sort of an affable and nervous energy), he makes a question that Crowley had already primed for us when asking Nina about the name of the coffee: having a "predictable" alternative and an unpredictable one.
This creates an interesting parallel with the next scene: Michael is discussing the possibility of erasing Aziraphale from The Book of Life (a punishment even worse than Holy Water on demons, because not having existed at all, EVER is definitely worse than having existed and ceased to exist at some point) when The Metatron arrives, interrupts the moment and signals having brought coffee. Yup, an amicable gesture, but also a "not death" offering that he shows clearly to everyone (even when Michael or Uriel do not understand or care for it. It wasn't meant for them). He even dismisses what Michael was saying as "utter balderdash" and a "complete piffle", which are the kind of outdated terms we have heard Aziraphale use commonly. So, The Metatron has put up this show for a specific audience of one.
The next moment on the script has Metatron asking Crowley for the clarification of his identity. Up to this moment, every angel has been ignoring the sprawled demon in the corner while discussing how to punish Aziraphale⌠But The Metatron defers to the most unlikely person in the room, and the only one who will push any buttons on Aziraphale: Crowley. After that, Aziraphale can recognize him, and Metatron dismisses the "bad angels" (using Aziraphale's S1 epithet) with another "catchy old phrase", "spit spot", while keeping Muriel at the back and implying that there is a possibility to "check after" if those "bad angels" have done anything wrong.
Up to this moment, he has played it perfectly. The only moment when he loses it is when he calls Muriel "the dim one", which she ignores⌠probably because that's the usual way they get talked to in Heaven. I'm not sure if Aziraphale or Crowley cared for that small interaction, but it is there for us (the audience) to notice it: the sympathy the character might elicit is built and sought, but he is not that nice.
After that, comes "the chinwag" and the offer of the coffee: the unnecessarily complicated order. It is not Aziraphale's cup of tea (literally), but it is so specific that it creates some semblance of being thought with care, and has a "hefty jigger" of syrup (again with the funny old words). And, as Aziraphale recognizes, it is "very nice!" (as The Metatron "jolly hoped so"), and The Metatron approves of him drinking it by admitting he has "ingested things in my time, you know?". This interaction is absolutely designed to build a bridge of understanding. The Metatron probably knew that the first response he would get was a "no", so he tailored his connection specifically to "mirror" Aziraphale: love of tasty human treats he has also consumed, funny old words like the ones he loves, a very human, worn, well-loved look. That was the bait for "the stroll": the moment when Aziraphale and Crowley get separated, because The Metatron knew that being close to Crowley, Aziraphale would have an hypervigilant soundboard to check the sense of what he was going to get offered. That's what the nasty look The Metatron gives to Crowley while leaving the bookshop builds (and it gets pinpointed by the music, if you were about to miss it).
The next thing we listen from The Metatron is "You don't have to answer immediately, take all the time you need" in such a friendly manner⌠we can see Aziraphale doubting a little, and then comes the suggestion: "go and tell your friend the good news!". This sounds like encouragement, but is "the reel". He already knows how Crowley would react, and is expecting it (we can infer it by his final reaction after going back for Aziraphale after the break up, but let's not get ahead of ourselves shall we?). He even can work up Muriel to take care of the bookshop while waiting for the catch.
What did he planted in Aziraphale's mind? Well, let's listen to the story he has to tell:
"I don't think he's as bad a fellow⌠I might have misjudged him!" â not strange in Aziraphale to have such a generous spirit while judging people. He's in a⌠partnership? relationship? somethingship? with a demon! So maybe first impressions aren't that reliable anyway. The Metatron made an excellent job with this, too.
"Michael was not the obvious candidate, it was me!" â This idea is interesting. Michael has been the stickler, the rule follower, even the snitch. They have been rewarded and recognized by that. Putting Aziraphale before Michael in the line of succession is a way of recognizing not only him, but his system of values, which has always been at odds with the main archangels (even when it was never an open fight).
"Leader, honest, don't tell people what they want to hear" â All these are generic compliments. The Metatron hasn't been that aware of Aziraphale, but are in line with what would have been said of any "rebel leader". They come into context with the next phrase.
"That's why Gabriel came to you, I imagineâŚ" â I'm pretty sure The Metatron didn't imagine this, ha. He is probably imagining that the "institutional problem" is coalescing behind his back, and trying to keep friends close, but enemies closer⌠while dividing and conquering. If Gabriel rebelled, and then went searching for Aziraphale (and Crowley, they are and item and he knows it), that might mean a true risk for his status quo and future plans.
Heaven has great plans and important projects for you â this is to sweeten the pot: the hefty jigger of almond syrup. You will be able to make changes! You can make a difference from the inside! Working for an old man who feels strangely familiar! And who recognizes your point of view! That sounds like the best job offer of the world, really.
Those, however, are not the main messages (they are still building good will with Aziraphale); they are thought out to build the last, and more important one:
Heaven is well aware of your "de facto partnership" with CrowleyâŚ
It would be considered irregular if you wanted to work with him againâŚ
You, and you alone, can bring him to Heaven and restore his full angelic status, so you could keep working together (in very important projects).
Here is the catch. He brought the coffee so he could "offer him coffee", but the implications are quite clear: if you want to continue having a partnership with Crowley, you two must come to Heaven. Anything else would be considered irregular, put them in a worst risk, and maybe, just maybe, make them "institutional enemies". Heaven is more efficient chasing enemies, and they have The Book of Life as a menace.
We already know how scared Aziraphale has always been about upsetting Heaven, but he has learned to "disconnect" from it through the usual "they don't notice". The Metatron came to tell him "I did notice, and it has come back to bite you". The implied counterpart to the offer is "you can always get death". Or even worse, nonexistence (we have already imagined the angst of having one of them condemned to that fate, haven't we?)
When The Metatron arrives, just after seeing Crowley leave the bookshop, distraught, he casually asks "How did he take it?", but he already knows. That was his plan all along: making them break up with an offer Aziraphale could not refuse, but Crowley could not accept. That's why he even takes the license to slightly badmouth Crowley: "Always did want to go his own way, always asking damn fool questions, too". He also arrive with the solution to the only objection Aziraphale would have: Muriel, the happy innocent angel that he received with so much warmth and kindness, is given the opportunity to stay on Earth, taking care of the bookshop. The only thing he would have liked to take with him is not a thing, and has become impossible.
If God is playing poker in a dark room and always smiling, The Metatron is playing chess, and he is quite good at it (that's why he loves everything to be predictable). He is menacing our pieces, and broke our hearts in the process⌠But I'm pretty sure he is underestimating his opponents. His awful remark of Muriel being "dim"; saying that Crowley "asks damn fool questions", and even believing that Aziraphale is just a softie that can be played like a pipe⌠That's why telling him the project is "The Second Coming" was an absolute gift for us as an audience, and it prefigures the downfall that is coming â the one Aziraphale, now with nothing to lose, started cooking in his head during that elevator ride (those couple of minutes that Michael Sheen gifted to all of us: the shock, the pain, the fury, and that grin in the end, with the eyes in a completely different emotion). Remember that Aziraphale is intelligent, but also fierce. Guildernstern commited a similar mistake in Hamlet, and it didn't go well:
"Why, look you now, how unworthy a thing you make of me! You would play upon me, you would seem to know my stops, you would pluck out the heart of my mystery, you would sound me from my lowest note to the top of my compass, and there is much music, excellent voice, in this little organ, yet cannot you make it speak. 'Sblood, do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? Call me what instrument you will, though you can fret me, you cannot play upon me."
I'm so excited to learn how this is going to unfold!! Because our heroes have always been very enthusiastic at creating plans together, failed miserably at executing them, and even then succeeding⌠But now they are apart, more frustrated and the stakes are even higher. Excellent scenario for a third act!

Chapter 46 of human Bill Cipher frantically wishing he was still locked in the Mystery Shack and not getting his wish:
The Eclipse: Part 4
Gravity has fully disappeared from Gravity Falls and Bill finally learns why the Axolotl traveled all the way to Earth to see him. And meanwhile, Ford's in mortal peril.
[SUPER IMPORTANT AUTHOR'S NOTE: if you're reading this, it means that I've edited chapters 6&7 to make them compatible with The Book Of Bill but I have not edited this chapter yet.
Before TBOB came out, in chapter 7 I wrote that the Ax's deal with Bill was "I'll give you a different form (a human body) in a different time (dropping you a thousand years in the future) so you don't have to see your old enemies" and then Bill stole a time tape to come right back to the 21st century. I've now edited ch 6&7 to make the Ax's deal with Bill "I'll drop you off in Theraprism" and then Bill escaped via reincarnation.
However, this chapter refers to the OLD version of ch 7. That's because there are not physically enough hours in my life for me to do all the editing I want to do as fast as I want to do it.
Things Bill & the Axolotl say in this chapter contradict TBOB and contradict what the new ch 6&7 say. The conversation they're having DOES NOT accurately reflect the fic's current plot. Don't freak out. I'll fix it when I can. - (note added Sept 7, 2024; will be removed when it's no longer necessary.)]
####
There were only two ways to remove a pair of magic friendship bracelets. Either both wearers had to consent to removing the bracelets; or one of the parties had to die. The bracelets weren't active if they were only being worn by one person, and a corpse wasn't a person.
The moment Dipper's soul left his body, the thread connecting the bracelets turned visible again.
Bill immediately yanked off his bracelet. He considered just letting it go, reconsidered considering that Dipper's ghost would probably tattle to Mabel, and carefully, slowly reeled the thread in. Without the magic active, it was just normal embroidery floss. The Axolotl's gravitational pull didn't make Dipper's body heavy enough to break the line, but if Bill jerked it just a little too hard, it would snap.
Bill heaved a sigh when the body was close enough he could grasp its wrist. He grabbed Dipper's head and snarled in his dead face, "This is why I told you to get in the cave." He wrapped the bracelet around and around the tree trunk and Dipper's forearm, muttering to himself, "But does anybody listen to the all-knowing immortal dream demon who's seventy times older than their entire universe? No! No, what could it possibly know! Surely we'll get better ideas from the brain-damaged hick who married a raccoonâ"
An immense voice said, "Hello."
Bill froze. He slowly turned away from the beast above Gravity Falls.
The voice said serenely, "Look at me, you 8-karat coward."
He slowly turned toward the beast above Gravity Falls. He swallowed hard, steeled himself, and dragged his gaze up until he met the Axolotl's eye and he was gently tugged into the time and space between time and space. "Oh, heyyy," he squeaked. He forced a pained smile. "Didn't see you there! Haha, hi! Wow! Imagine running into you in this dimension on this planet, crazy."
"Yes, crazy," the Axolotl agreed.
"This isn't a regular part of your commute! I guess you've got some time off," Bill said. "Work must be going well!"
"Pretty well. I scheduled an extended lunch break," the Axolotl said amiably. "How's being human going?"
Bill shot the Axolotl a dirty look.
The Axolotl continued to give him a perpetual smile. "Happy New Year, by the way."
"I'll kill you."
"No you won't."
"Okay look, let's just cut to the chase," Bill said. "Go on. Tell me my punishment."
"Punishment?"
"For! Coming back here instead of staying when you dumped me in 3012. I skipped time while on parole. That's obviously why you're here." He looked down, shielding his face with a hand and squeezing his eyes shut. "So stop wasting my time and tell me how much trouble I'm in. I'm a busy guy, I don't wanna drag this out."
"Well," the Axolotl said, "it appears to me that you're locked in your enemies' home, you can't use doors, and you need to be handcuffed to a child to go outside. Is that enough 'trouble' for you?"
Bill opened one eye. "Wait, so." He looked up skeptically. "You're saying I won't get re-executed for breaking the rules. Orâor get stuck in a worse body."
"No," the Axolotl said. "You'll answer to no jailer's voice; what you do now is your own choice. I moved you by a thousand years to free you from your killers' fears. If you decide then to return, it's your own second chance you burn."
"Ohhh. See, I assumed this entire situation was a... prison... thing. Considering the..." He gestured vaguely at his body. "The flesh prison."Â
"It's a body. Not a prison. You aren't being imprisoned."
"'Not a prison' my base, if it's not a prison then why can'tâ" He caught himself before he asked a question, and took a deep breath. "So, there are no rules against coming right back to where I left off."
"Though I think your plan is clunkyânot my circus, not my monkey."
"Oh. Okay, great." Bill planted his hands on his hips, straightening up properly for the first time since the Axolotl's arrival. "Huh. How 'bout that. Spent the last two days worrying for nothing!"
"You? Worried?"
"Of course not, I wasn't worried for a second," Bill said. "So if you're not here to punish meâthat doesn't explain why you are here."
"Are you asking?"
"You know I'm not."
The Axolotl stared at Bill, patiently awaiting a question. Bill stared at the Axolotl, patiently not asking one.
The Axolotl caved first. "I wanted to make sure you hadn't burned down the dimension yet."
Bill pointed sharply at the Axolotl. "Hey! Hey!"
The Axolotl gave him a look like a toothless gumball learning how to smile.
"Not funny! Seriously, now!"
"I came because you called."
"Whâ When didâ?" Bill cut himself off. He thought back to the day he'd spent locked in the bathroom. He recalled the desperate plea for salvation he'd painted on the ceiling. He buried his face in his hand. "That... that was a joke. False alarm."
"I gathered," the Axolotl said.
Bill peeked between his fingers. "But, I did call for rescue. Therefore. You're here to rescue me."
"No."
"Why nâ! You said I'm not supposed to be in a prison! You've seen what these humans have done to me!"
"You aren't a prisoner," the Axolotl said. "You're a kidnapping victim. That's outside my jurisdiction."
Infuriatingâbut it told Bill something important: in the Axolotl's eyes, Bill's captivity wasn't just. And Bill didn't consider the Axolotl any kind of godâhe didn't consider anyone any kind of godâbut the Ax had a lot of pull in the multiverse when it came to defining the universal concept of justice. That was promising.Â
"But I do have a keen interest in your case. I wanted to check in on your progress."
Bill gave the Axolotl a questioning look. "'Progress.'"
The Axolotl said nothing. Bill waited. The Axolotl simply continued to smile. "You haven't asked a question yet. Usually you can't wait to get rid of me."
"Under the circumstances," he gestured again at his body, "I didn't think I could afford to waste it."
"I see. However, I do have a meeting I need to get to."
What was the most important thing he could ask. What did he need to know the most. "So... if I learn my lesson or complete my sentence orâwhatever I'm supposed to do... will you turn me back into a triangle?"
"IÂ can't and won't do anything else. I've completed my obligation to you," the Axolotl said. "Whatever happens to you from now on is up to you."
That could mean anything from "you're stuck as a human forever and will die in less than a century" to "there's a secret spell on you and when you meet its conditions you'll automatically turn back into a triangle" to "you're already a triangle, you just need to believe in yourself." All Bill knew was that he wasn't getting any help from the Ax.
"It's been a pleasure as always," the Axolotl said. The world slowly began to move again as he gently returned Bill to the dimension he'd come from.
"Wait!" Bill called. He needed to knowâwas he still a triangle, somewhere on the inside, buried beneath all this flesh and bone? Or had the Axolotl's transformation rotted him to his coreâwas he now nothing but a human through and through? If he wasn't being punished, why had his suffocating soul been smothered under a blanket of meat? If he wasn't being punished, why had his own corpse stared him in the eye as if it didn't recognize him? "Just one more question before you go!"
"If you have the time. Up to you."
If he had the time? Bill's eyes darted around. Why wouldn't he have the time, what was he missingâ?
His gaze locked on Ford. Floating twenty, thirty feet out from the cliff's edge. Oh.
Bill let the Axolotl's gravity drag him to the edge of the cliff before digging a hand into the ground, holding himself in place. Bill was safe; Dipper's body was safe, and his soul could float home once the Axolotl was gone. But when the Axolotl was gone, gravity would immediately come backâ0 to 100, just like thatâand Ford was dead.
And the Axolotl was already turning away. The millions of axolotls in the water below followed, moving through and out of the lake as though the lakebed didn't exist, migrating in the Axolotl's wake.
Ford was unsuccessfully trying to swim through the air back to land. Several useless feet of cable from his infinity belt floating around him from trying to fling it at the cliff. The best he could do was stretch an arm toward land.
He met Bill's eyes. The only other time Bill had seen Ford this terrified was when he'd threatened to torture the kids.
Bill looked at Ford, looked at the Axolotlânearly too far to shout toâand looked down. By now, the future death he'd witnessed earlier was so close that Bill could see more than the blood to be left on the rocks. He could see the bodyâgray hair, tan overcoat, broken. It was just a few moments away.
Stanford Pines was about to die. Bill Cipher was innocent. Dipper was his witness; Dipper, honest goody hero type, could verify that Bill not only repeatedly told them both to stay away from the thing in the sky, but also warned them to anchor themselves right before totality. Everyone at the shack knew he'd protested, knew he'd warned them, knew he'd begged to stay home. There was no possible way Bill could get blamed for this.
And once Ford was dead, none of the idiots in this town would ever find a way to destroy Bill.
Up to you.
Bill didn't stop to think.
He kicked off the edge of the cliff.
He could see, hovering in the air like a golden arc amidst a dozen blurry failures, the path he needed to jump to reach Ford. The Axolotl's tail was already soaring over the town, his sky blue fins rippling like vast, slow sails. If Bill reached Ford before the Axolotl's influence was completely gone, he could fly them over the lake and they might both survive.Â
They collided. Bill had to fling an arm over Ford's shoulder before he managed to get a grip on his lapel; Ford seized Bill's hoodie in both hands. Ford demanded, "What are youâ?" He fell silent as their trajectory took a sudden sharp turn from south to east.
"The lake!"
Ford nodded. Why could come if they both survived. He could already feel weight grabbing onto his limbs. He spared a split-second glance down, but with half the lake floating in the air he couldn't tell if they'd cleared its banks yet. "Have you ever learned to swim?"
"You have to learn?!"
Ford prayed, if Bill drowned, that he was a mortal, and that he wasn't the kind of drowner who dragged other people down with him. "Cross your ankles as tightly as you can, cross your arms over your chest, land feet first in the waterâbetter to break your legs than your neckâdo not tilt your head, eyes on the horizonâ" And that was as much emergency survival advice as he could give before gravity returned in full force.
This wasn't the first time Ford had plummeted into a deep liquid from an irresponsible height over the past thirty years. The hit was softer than he expectedâthe turbulent lake hadn't settled back down into its normal water pressureâbut he also sank far deeper than he expected. Streams of bubbles raced past his vision; maybe it was just the power of suggestion, but he could have sworn they looked like transparent axolotls.
As soon as he had his wits about him, he threw off his coat, tugged off his boots, and kicked his way toward the surface.
Bill didn't.
This actually wasn't so bad, he thought, with a calmness that definitely came from being such a rational level-headed fellow and not from being in shock. Sure, all the air had been forced out of his lungs and his body was screaming in airless panic, but he wasn't his body, was he? This felt just like floating. He would miss floating again.
What was he supposed to do now.
He'd seen humans swim. He tried kicking his legs. He felt stupid. But, he decidedâagain, with a calmness that definitely was not from shockâthat looking kinda stupid was probably preferable to drowning. Although he was curious what drowning felt like. Had he ever drowned a puppet before? He couldn't remember. Didn't seem bad so far.
He surfaced.
Ford was already on shore, on hands and knees, desperately coughing out water, his lungs burning. He collapsed in the sand. It took a couple minutes for him to reach the point where he was breathing more than he was coughing, and another minute of heavy breathing before he had the energy to look at the lake again. Bill was floating on his back about fifty feet away, very still.
Ford croaked, "Bill," coughed again, and tried a little louder. "Bill?"
Without otherwise moving, Bill raised one arm and gave him a thumbs-up.
Ford dug into what energy reserves he still had, shuffled back into the water, and swam over to Bill. "Are you all right?"
Bill gave him a dazed look, opened his mouth, and exhaled a cup of water. Then he started coughing.Â
Ford grimaced. "Let's... get to shore." He took Bill's arm to tug him toward dry land.
Bill flailed upright and shoved him off. "Don'tâ" Hack. "M'fine. I lâ" Cough. "I like floating." He lay on his back, shut his eyes, and said shakily, "Don't touch me."
Ford treaded water for a moment, considering that. Bill looked like he'd got the hang of floating enough that he wasn't an immediate drown risk, so Ford said, "I'll... be on land."
"'Kay."
Ford swam to shore and sat cross-legged in the wet sand to wait, staring down at his hands. The Handwitch's ring was a bright indigo blue again, no traces of darkness within the cabochon, as though the lake water had washed it clean.
Should he go do something useful? There weren't many places Bill could go, except to shore; it wasn't like he was at risk of escaping. But then if Bill did make it to land while Ford was distracted, he had a chance to make a run for it without the braceletâ
Ford stood up. "Bill! Where's Dipper?!"
Bill raised one arm and pointed up.
Ford looked at Gravity Peak. A small speck high above, Dipper was looking down over the cliff's edge. Ford waved to him. Dipper waved back. Well. That was inconvenient. Maybe Ford could restrain Bill with the infinity belt's cable in the meantime. (He reeled the cable in while he was thinking about it. He was fortunate it hadn't tangled on anything while he was underwater.)
"We have to rendezvous with Dipper. Get over here."
"Just leave me."
"Not an option."
Bill let out a pitiable whine, but, after a moment, managed to figure out a way to slowly paddle-kick his way toward land.
When his heels hit sand, he rolled over, crawled onto land, and lay down. "Gravity," he groaned. "I hate gravity."
"I'm not too fond of it myself right now." Ford's limbs felt like lead. Some combination of spending a day and a half in steadily reduced gravity, the exhaustion following a near death experience, and waterlogged clothes. "Where are the enchanted bracelets?"
Bill lifted one hand from the elbow and pointed toward the cliff again.
That'd be just Ford's luck. All the same, he said, "Really?" Bill would hide them if they were on him.
"Yes, really. Whaddaya want, a strip search?" He gestured vaguely toward his body without lifting his head. "Go ahead. 'M not moving to help." His arm flopped back down.
Ford decided that was a bluff he did not want to call. "Fine. We'll put them back on when we rendezvous with Dipper." If Bill tried to escape, Ford wasn't sure he was in any condition to chase; but then Bill didn't seem to be in any condition to run, either.
"Surprised you wanna wear matching bracelets with me. If I'd known, I woulda made you a friendship bracelet." Under his breath, Bill muttered at the sand, "But m'sure it'd've been a waste of thread."
Ford decided it was more prudent to hold his tongue. "Can you walk?"
"If I have to." For as difficult as Bill made getting to his feet look, one would think he was being subjected to the gravity of Jupiter. Ford offered his hand; Bill smacked it aside.
"Well. My raft is still in the cave behind Trembley Falls, so we'll have to borrow a boat." Ford pointed toward Tate & Backle's Bait & Tackle at the far end of the lake. "Think you can make it that far?"
Billâbarefoot, soggy, and slumped like he had the whole weight of the world on his shouldersâgave Ford the most pathetic look he'd ever seen Bill wear. Ford empathized completely. But Bill only sighed and said, "Let's get going."
####
Tate lowered his magazine to give Ford a critical look. "Dr. Pines," he said. "You get caught out on the lake when the gravity came back?"
"Something like that."
He shook his head. "Shoulda listened to the news."
"The news?"
"Dad's been making public warnings since yesterday. 'Stay anchored and keep your head down.' Reckon you must've missed it."
"We've... been camping." He'd have to ask Fiddleford about that later. "Listenâdo you have a boat we could borrow? It's an emergency. We were separated from Dipper and we have to get across the lake."
Tate raised his hat just enough to give Ford a look that told him exactly what he thought of his merit as a guardianâFord figured he deserved thatâbut then stood with a sigh. "All right, I'll see what we've got."
He paused, then gestured behind Ford with his chin. "Who's the lady?"
Ford turned. The shop's door was propped open and Bill was leaning in the doorway, arms crossed tight, staring blankly out across the lake. "ErâGoldie. She's... staying in the shack a few weeks."
"Hm." Tate raised his voice. "Ma'am?"
Bill didn't budge.
"Ma'amâMiss Goldie?"
That time he turned to give Tate a faraway look. "Me?"
"Yes, uhâyou're soaked to the bone. Would you like to borrow some dry clothes?"
"Oh." Bill considered the question for a little longer than necessary. "If you want."
Ford explained, "She inhaled a lot of water."
Tate nodded. "Think we've got some out-of-season stock in the back, there might be something big enough for..." He caught himself before insinuating something about a lady's weight, and mumbled, "Well, it'll do." He headed to a door behind the counter, paused, looked Ford over, and reluctantly said, "I s'pose you can get something too."
####
Tate had a motorboat in good working order, so he let them borrow it, with a stern request to have it back by the end of the day. And so they set outâFord in waders that went up to his chest, a bandana he really hoped was keeping his embarrassing neck tattoo hidden, and a t-shirt that said "The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of court-ordered anger management classes"; and Bill in a makeshift skirt Tate had apologetically improvised out of a beach towel, a sweater depicting a pine tree constructed out of fish that said "MERRY FISHMAS", and a pair of novelty slippers shaped like rainbow trout.
"I'm never giving these shoes back," Bill informed Ford as they crossed the lake. "I don't care whether we buy them or steal them. They're hilarious." It was the nearest thing to personality Bill had demonstrated since landing in the lake.
Ford supposed he was in no position to tell Bill he couldn't keep them, considering that Bill had... well.
Well.
Ford should say something about that. He didn't know what. He didn't know where to start. (Bill's question came back to him: if Ford didn't believe anything Bill said, why did he keep trying to pry information out of him?)
(Because, he realizedâbeneath thirty years of every nerve in his body screaming "DON'T TRUST HIM"âpart of him was still hoping Bill would say something he could believe.)
Ford cleared his throat. "It's... impressive that you didn't panic while you were underwater," he said awkwardly. "That must have taken remarkable self control."
"Oh. Eh." Bill spread his hands vaguely. "I wasn't really paying attention to what was happening. I was thinking about other stuff."
Ford blinked. "While you were drowning?"
"It wasn't a very severe drowning."
Ford huffed.
This was probably a conversation he should have laterâBill's brain only appeared to be half onâbut, if they had it later, Ford wasn't sure he'd get anything but yet another polished lie.Â
And so he steeled his nerves and asked, "Why did you save me."
Bill didn't answer. He stared silently at his rainbow trout slippers.
"Billâ?"
"Hold on," he said. "I don't know, justâgive me a minute to make something up."
It was the first time in a month and a halfâthe first time in yearsâthat Ford was absolutely certain Bill had just told him the truth.
And not just about his intentions to lie to Fordâbut about not knowing why he'd saved him.
It meant there was no secret master plan, no manipulative ulterior motives, no cunning illusions. It meant Bill had endangered himself just to save Ford.
There was a universe where Ford then said, "I didn't think you meant it all those times you said you wanted to be my friend again," and where Bill liedâboth to Ford and to himselfâ"I didn't think I meant it either." It wasn't this universe, because neither one of them wanted those words out in the world. Yet they still hovered around them, unspoken.
It didn't make Ford trust Bill. It didn't make Ford like Bill. Bill was still everything he'd ever beenâliar, conman, tyrant, torturerâand Ford still hated him for all of it.
But. It meant that for the first time in a month in a half, a muscle between Ford's shoulder blades that had been knotted tight with fear could finally loosen and relax.
Ford was safe.

Lovely article+illustrations by Kimono Ichiba (via Tanpopo <3), overviewing famous "scary"patterns... which are in fact often auspicious as traditional Japanese patterns ;)
I believe I have them all on the blog somewhere but it's nice having them in one place so let's go!
Spiderwebs (kumo no su)
In ancient China, spider were seen as auspicious messengers connecting Heaven to Earth.
As the spider catches its prey in its web, spiderweb came to signify "grasping happiness".
Apparently during Edo period, prostitutes and geisha used spiderweb patterned items as a good luck charm (meaning something like "this customer will come back").
A very famous spiderweb depiction is the Lady Rokujo ukiyoe [ç honĂ´ (the flame of passion)] by female artist Uemura Shoen. Wisteria caught in the web could mean ``I hope [Prince Genji] will come tonight'' which is pretty sad considering her story T_T
Skulls (dokuro)
Exact name for human remains pattern is "nozarashi" (lit. "weather beaten") ie bones scattered in a field. This depicts a corpse turned to bones/unveiled from its grave by the elements.
Skulls are thought to ward off evil and bad luck. Bones can also symbolize a do-or-die spiritâ, or hope for rebirth after death.
OP stresses a theory linking bones pattern to a buddhist saying č˛ĺłćŻçŠş shikisokuzekĹŤ "form is emptiness, matter is void, all is vanityâ". An interpetation is that we'll all turn to dust one day so we're all equal.
Bones patterns are often seen during Obon (Festival of the dead) season.
Monsters, ogres and ghosts (yĂ´kai / oni / yĂťrei)
Monsters patterns were then worn to ward off bad luck and evil spirits. Reasoning is: let's repel scary things by wearing an even scarier monster!
Fearsome monsters were especially use by people with dangerous jobs, like Edo period firemen.
Firemen often had the lining of their heavy fire attire (çŤďż˝ďż˝ďż˝čŁ
ć kajishouzoku) embelished with lavish designs of brave heroes and fantastic monsters. It was both a talisman and a way to show that they did not fear danger or death.
Another reason behing monsters patterns is the Edo period love for "scary" entertainements, be it ghost stories, parlor or other types of games, art (see for ex. Utagawa Kuniyoshi), etc. And Edo city dwellers were all about being fashionable so a monster pattern would have been considered quite iki!

Darlin', can I be your favorite?
Pairing: Sukuna x fem!reader
Word Count: 2k
Synopsis: In a world full of death and tortue, wouldn't it be the easiest to seduce a man who is able to protect you at any cost? Ryomen Sukuna definetely is exactly that. Now, the seduction part...
Warnings: no really deep plot, just some teasing and a little bit of spice here and there, language, reader trying to seduce Sukuna with literally everything lol
Inspired by the song "favorite" by Isabel LaRosa
Your mission was clear since the first time you saw him in action, felt how strong he is: Get Sukuna to fucking adore you.
It might sound ridiculous to the untrained ear. Sukuna, the king of curses, the most frightful creature walking on this planet? To even consider youâd be able to warm his heart is worth a laughter. You know exactly how all the others would react when they hear your wild plan to seduce him, to get him to catch feelings for only you.
But what better defense than having the king of curses by your side? This fucking world is nothing but a battlefield and as a jujutsu sorcerer, youâre in the middle of it. Day in day out you risk your life in order to safe others. And even though it might sound tempting to simply haunt after Gojo Satoru, itâs not the same.
No, you want Ryomen Sukuna and no one else.
Your heels click against the floor as you make your way through Shibuyaâs train station, Sukunaâs fingers lying in your purse comfortably. What better way to catch a glimpse into his heart than giving him back those? Well, to be exact you donât have a set plan apart from getting him to like you. After all, love canât be forced, right?
Well, that skin tight dress paired with those high heels you chose for today might do that, though.
âNow, where are you Yuji?â, you mumble to yourself, eyes darting around the worn-down area.
There is no doubt in the fact that a fight occurred here not long ago. The air still smells like blood and sweat, the wall is still hot from an enormous impact. But who? Was it Yuji? You follow a trail of blood with your hips swinging from side to side. You just need to find him, need to seduce the king of curses. This is your best chance to not croak in this shitty job.
Your heels stop in their tracks.
A tuft of pink hair rests against the entrance of the rest room, so minor that you almost missed it.
Almost.
You walk towards the beat-up boy while casually inspecting him. Heâs definitely alive, but barely. Yujiâs whole face is covered in multiple cuts and bruises. Who on earth did he fight against? And where is that other person? No, itâs not your responsibility to think about that right now. With a swift motion you open your purse and reveal those oh so deadly fingers.
âNow be a good boy and swallowâ, you purr.
Your hand grabs his neck and yanks his head upwards while you carefully feed Yuji Sukunaâs fingers. Please, let this work. You are tired to the brim of running away, of fighting curse after curse each and every day. How about a peaceful life with Sukuna by your side? Fuck Jujutsu High, fuck Satoru Gojo. You donât want to die before you were even able to live properly.
âGet your hands off me, human.â
For a moment, your heart skips a beat. Just one look into his red gleaming eyes and suddenly so matured face is enough for you to realize that this isnât Yuji anymore. No, the person you are sitting on with your hand wrapped around his neck is none other than Ryomen Sukuna.
Finally.
âOh, youâre awake. That went smoother than I thoughtâ, you reply with a cheeky grin, not moving an inch away from him like he told you to.
âWho the hell are you, brat?â
He has definitely seen you before, you are a jujutsu sorcerer without any doubt. But why are so damn close, why does your hand wrap so delicately around his neck? Your dark eyes rest on his face unpromising, lashes hanging into your orbs seductively. Whatâs that supposed to be?
âMy nameâs whatever you make it. But how about wife?â
Sukuna isnât able to move, let alone speak. Did you really introduce yourself to the king of curses like that? He shouldnât waste any time, wring your neck the way you deserve it, dissolve you into tiny pieces. Who the hell do you think you are to speak to him like that? You, a puny woman? Not even the fact that you reunited him with a few of his missing fingers is enough to spare your life.
But whyâŚWhy does he still sit there like he did before, allowing your hand to rest against his neck? Why is he unable to give you a sharp answer like he always does?
âI am the king of cursesâ, is the only thing heâs able to press out.
âAnd Iâll be your girl. Deal?â
He lets out the breath he didnât know he was holding, eyes scanning your features up and down. You do have a pretty decent face for a human, your delicate eyes keeping him trapped. That confidence dripping from each and every pore of yours, the way your body is so near that heâs able to hear your blood circulateâŚ
âWhat the hell are you talking about, stupid girl? If I wanted to, I could kill you without even flinching. Now get off me and run for your life.â
When Sukuna finally regained his threatening voice again, he expected your heart to shiver, your body to stumble backwards until you run away. But instead, you move even closer and dare to sit on top of him, gleaming eyes now staring him into the ground while your naked thighs rub against his pants.
âBut you didnât. Think I must be your favorite.â
The fact that he didnât kill you right on the spot when you disobeyed his order is enough proof that your plan is actually working. Yes, you managed to confuse the king of curses, to arouse his interest. Now the only thing thatâs left is seducing him.
âYou are annoying as hell. Now get off me, I have some work to doâ, he barks back at you.
His hand grabs your wrist roughly and removes your grip around his neck. But instead of simply throwing you off him, he holds your arm in place while keeping only inches of distance.
Oh, his lips are so close that you are literally able to taste them. Just one movement, one innocent flinching of your hips above his and the gap between you both is closed.
âAre you trying to seduce me, dumb girl?â, he breathes out.
He does it so well, keeping himself cool and composed while his mind races back and forth with your intoxicating smell penetrating his nose. In his long life, there was never a woman who actually tried to seduce him. After all, heâs the king of curses, so strong because of the fact that he never felt love or affection for anyone in all those years. Heâs heartless, cold, a menace. Why would a woman ever get the idea of showing him affection? He came here to kill, to destroy this fucking city and make that brat suffer.
But now thereâs you.
And apparently you couldnât care less about the fact that heâs the king of curses.
âActually, I amâ, you purr, your free hand beginning to draw small circles onto his chest.
âWhy would you do something so fucking stupid?â
âI mean, youâre the strongest, right?â
He has to blink a few times, the way you look at him as if heâs the dumb one catching him completely off guard.
âIâm the king of cursesâ, he reminds you all over again.
âAnd with being your favorite, you take me places-â
âWhat the fuck are you talking about?â, he interrupts you roughly.
You roll your eyes in sheer annoyance, nails now digging into his chest.
âMake me your wife so I donât dieâ, you finally blurt out.
Is this the reason behind your questionable action? He could have killed you right on the spot and just one look into your gleaming orbs tells him that you know that all too well. And still, you risked your life for him to protect yours. Were you really so sure youâd be able to seduce the king of curses with a lousy dress and some high heels?
âWhy would I do that?â
Enough playing. He should behead you right on the spot before torturing you for the time you wasted. You arenât even worthy to breathe the same air as him, let alone being this close to his body.
ButâŚWhy isnât he able to simply throw you off, then? Why is he even questioning what youâre up to, replaying your words over and over in his mind?
âBecause Iâll let you taste-â
Your mouth is so close to his ear that your hot breath caresses his skin while the filthiest thoughts leave you with ease. His eyes grow wider and wider with each passing second, disgusted but at the same timeâŚ
âEnoughâ, he hisses through gritted teeth while grabbing your shoulders roughly.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â
âArenât you at least a little invested? I have a lot to offerâ, you reply, ignoring his last question elegantly.
The war inside his head makes him forget that heâs actually out on a mission for a moment. YouâŚyou are so different from all those other jujutsu sorcerers, risked your puny life so that he eventually watches over you. How ridiculously brave, how fucking stupid. But still, when your gleaming eyes rest on his face like that, that oh so cheeky grin plastered on your face you make him wonder. A wife, his favorite?
Before heâs able to think straight again, a wave of freezing mist darts towards you at neck-breaking speed. His heart skips a beat, eyes darting towards Uraume who fixates you with hate dripping from every poor of her warped face.
You wonât be fast enough. No jujutsu sorcerer except for Gojo Satoru himself is able to escape Uraumeâs powers when surprised. If he doesnât react, youâll die. But isnât that what he wants, that you finally vanish into thin air and leave him alone? You, the girl who just claimed him as her husband only because she doesnât want to die.
âNo.â
His body moves on its own. All of the sudden he finds himself standing in front of you, his hand deflecting Uraumeâs Frost Calm with ease.
âDonât you dare to hurt her, Uraume.â
You canât believe it, breath getting stuck in your throat. He really did save you. Even though all you did was purring at him, trying to convince him with sugary words, Ryomen Sukuna stood up for you and defended you against one of his. Out of instinct, you push your wobbly legs off the ground, excitement filling you to the brim. With that oh so cheeky smile, you wrap your arm around his and eye the person in front of you up and down innocently.
âBut sheâŚshe is a human being, Master. Sheâs a weakling, one of your enemiesâ, Uraume breathes out.
âWho allowed you to speak to your Master like that? Get out of my sight and do what you were taught to.â
You watch in awe as the person standing in front of you crumbles, their hateful gaze almost piercing through you like a knife until their gone as fast as they came.
âSo, I really am your favorite, huh?â, you hum.
âShut up brat, Iâm the only one who can kill you. Now get going, I have a lot of work to do.â

Optimus Prime
They yell loudly as Megatron goes to grab them, they smash him in the face with a tire iron as he is then tackled by Optimus. The Decepticon leader had ruined their date night. They flip him off as Optimus throws Megatron across the ground, his servo wraps around them quickly pulling them closer as they scramble up onto his shoulder. "Eat shit and die Fuck face!" They yell at Megatron.Â
Optimus clutched their small form protectively against his plating, battling protocols roaring. Had circumstances been different, the Prime would have roared in fury at your fierce defence against the tyrant but he was dealing with trying to keep them safe.Â
Megatron howled, clutching a fist to his dented face as energon streamed between digits. His optics blazed murder, craving nothing more than to snuff the fluttering spark of Optimus' and the human he held so closely.Â
"You've made a grave error this day, little beast. No corpse shall hide you from my wrath!" Megatron bellowed, brandishing his fusion cannon as if to raze the very earth. His field screamed promised agony that sent lesser mechs scampering for shelter.
Optimus vented his battle mask into place, tucking them securely against the safety of his backstrut. weapons primed and wrathful fields promising eons of hurt against any who dared to touch his Human.   Â
"You shall not harm them, Megatron. Leave. now. while your spark yet functions," Optimus warned in a voice low and in a heavy growl that sounded feral and unlike the Prime.
"Maybe you should get Shockwave to give you a facial reconciliation!, oh wait I did it already!" They sneer back from Optimus' shoulder at Megatron. Their teeth are bared at him as they snarl. If anyone else had seen the human they would have thought they were an animal.
Optimus suppressed an amused sigh at their show of fangs, so small yet fearless against the monster terrorising his people for millennia. Megatron bellowed in foaming rage, lunging toward where they perched upon Optimus's armoured pauldron. "Insolent pest! I shall grind your bones to powder and force-feed them to - aggh!"
A well-placed shot from Optimus's ion blaster struck the warlord, toppling the tyrant shrieking to the dirt. "Last warning, Megatron. Leave. or face me," Optimus rumbled, field pulsing protectiveness intertwined with fierce Protection. Â
With a snarl Megatron takes off. Once both Optimus and his human lover settle from the adrenaline and battle protocols. Optimus cradled their small form within his battle-worn servo, venting slow ex-vapor to purge lingering fumes. His optics dimly regarded their fragile body.Â
"That was a foolish act of bravery, little one," Optimus rumbled gently, digit carefully brushing across their forehead and down their cheek admiring their eyes alight with fire. His spark swelled at the determination. Â
"Sorry, I.. I got caught up in the moment, he missed me off ruining date night" they huff out while pressing their face into his neck cabling. Their body shakes from the adrenaline. "I hit Megatron with a tire iron" they whisper as it slowly registers in their own brain.
Optimus vented a soft huff of static, equal parts worry and weary amusement filling his field at their admission. "A valiant act indeed, though foolhardy against one as powerful as he," rumbled Optimus, vocals warm with approval despite the danger of the situation. His optics flicker in fondness. âPlease do not do that againâÂ
RatchetÂ
Megatron let's out a horrific scream as he gets electrocuted. He hadn't noticed the humans who had shoved the taser between the plates of his armour. "Get Tazered Bitch, not so fucking tough now huh?" They shout at the downed Decepticon only to be scooped up by Ratchet. Ratchet swept them into his servo with a staticky huff, deftly dodging the warlord's flailing blows as voltage shocks wracked Megatron's colossal frame. His field buzzed approval at their fearless defence of him.Â
"Reckless sparkling! You'll deactivate my rusting struts with stunts like that," Ratchet grumbled, though optics shone bright relief beneath grizzled plating. Megatron howled upon the earth, shaking off aftershocks that would crush the stoutest Autobot, madness glinting a terrifying helm snapped halfway 'twixt beast and machine.
Ratchet backed swiftly from flailing reach, hoisting their small form beyond harm's sight. Ratchet takes off transforming around them before he begins scolding the for how stupid they were, how dangerous it was. And the fact Megatron would personally hunt them now.
"Have you any idea how foolish that stunt was?!" Ratchet's engine revved indignantly even as he sped across the scarred earth, his cabin vibrating with barely-suppressed wrath and equal measure relief.Â
His sensors remained fixed upon the precious organic cargo nestled within his altforms cab, monitoring vital readings "Do you want a personal vendetta from Megatron? Because that's how you get a personal vendetta, you glitched little slagger!" Medical scans analysed each minute shift of breath.Â
"Reckless, Just...do not scare me so, small one," Ratchet rumbled quietly, worried and care etched in every bolt and wire.Â
"He had it coming Ratchet, plus that Amazon taser is getting a 10/10. 'WORKS GREAT, I Tazed a large alien warlord and he screamed like a bitch, will in fact work on creeps on the street' " they laugh while they look in the revision mirror to make sure they aren't being followed by said Decepticon.
Despite himself, Ratchet's engine sputtered an amused huff at their tone - so fearless in the face of giants who had destroyed armies. "Oh I've no doubt - the reviews certainly won't lack colour!" Ratchet agreed wryly, subtly activating scanners to sweep their escape route while watchful optics remained pinned to their reflection.Â
His vents sighed relief upon confirming no stalking signatures upon their trail, enemy or otherwise. Swinging wide the Ark's bunker doors, Ratchet transformed with care not to jostle his delicate cargo. Blue optics peered down aglow with a glare "Come now, troublemaker. No more outings for the next month for you while the oaf licks his wounds." His states while guiding them to the medbay.Â
âno fair Ratchet!âÂ
Jazz
They cling onto Jazz as the bot hides behind a boulder, multiple autobots had been out when the Decepticons had attacked. They are held tightly by Jazz as he debates the best possible to get them out of there unscaved.
Jazz vented softly, hugging their form protectively against his plating as pedefalls rumbled outside their scant cover.Â
"Ain't nothin' t'fear, li'l light. Ol' Jazz'll getcha outta here one piece, ya feel me?" he murmured soothing static against their ear, subtly scanning surroundings through plating. An opening presented itself, if he could provide distraction just long enough...
Pressing a swift kiss to their forehead, Jazz.â Go, sweetspark! Ain't got but a klik - I'm right behind ya!" Jazz called desperately over the roar of weapons, swerving and banking with abandon to keep pursuers engaged but alive.Â
"Hey ol' buckets 'a bolts! Over here!" With that, he peeled from cover in a burst of speed, transforming mid-leap to present the biggest possible target, tailfins flared wide. Weapon systems engaged, greeting the three pursuing seekers with enthusiastically snarky exclamations as he led them on a merry chase. His sole purpose in those seconds - buy precious time, before sharply veering back toward cover with afterburners blazing.Â
They do take off running but stop as they see Megatron advancing towards Jazz. They aren't far from either bot and in a split moment of bravery or stupidity their shoe is off and being flung right at Megatron's helm. "Your shit ass piece of Junk you lay a fucking hand on my boyfriend and I'll rip you apart with a fucking Magnet and plyers, don't you fucking test me you dipper wearing, goofy as looking supervillan wannabe!" They shout. It make the whole battlefield go almost dead silent. " Yea you fucking hear my bucket head, ill make you wish you were rusting!" They shout again.Â
Jazz's optics widened in horror behind his visor, witnessing your defiant act through static-laced vision. Fear gripped his struts like freezing polyhexian tundra.Â
Megatron's helm barely shifted from the impact, regarding their small form with optics glinting cruel amusement. His cannon charged with purpose to squash resistance as pointless and fleeting as an organic.
"Foolish creature. Your lives mean less than insects" Megatron sneered, taking ponderous steps their way that may as well have been a funeral march. The field around him broadcast murderous intentions that sent even the seasoned warriors around bolting for cover.Â
Jazz would not be denied. With a grief-stricken keen that curdled energon in lines, he flung himself between you and that doom-wielding arm aiming to end what meaning he had left. His field pulsed frenzied protectiveness tangled with pleas no words could voice.Â
"Ya want 'em, Megs, you'll hafta go through me first! An' I been dancin' this dance a long time..." Jazz spat static. Jazz was quick to get them out of there grabbing them and taking off. It isn't until they were back at the Ark did he finally transform, arms wrapped around them as he gives the a peace of his mind.
Jazz clutched their body against his chest plates long after abandoning the battle site, fleeing farther than ever felt safe from those sworn to end all he had left. His engine roared wildly, fuel pump pounding faster than any sabotage mission's duration against the relief of delivering them from harm.Â
Only within the Ark's fortified bunker did his struts unlock enough to collapse wearily to the floor, holding them close as grateful cries and static escaped in equal measure. "Don't you ever fraggin' do that ta me again, ya hear?" Jazz gasped brokenly at last, cupping their face desperately within his quaking palm. His visor glimmered tears unshed, relief and terror warning in equal measure.Â
"Can't lose ya...yer all Ah got left in this mess. Please, li'l light...don' scare me like that." Raw emotion clogged his vocalizer to near uselessness, pressing reverent kisses between choked intakes.Â
"He was going right for you baby!, I'm not letting the 3 tonne prick hurt you, so what I lost a shoe next time it will be a hydro flask of salt water and I hope it dents his helm" they state as they grab his face plate returning his kisses with fevor.
Jazz huffed a static-tinged laugh at their fierce declaration, so brave yet trembling in his gentle grasp. His cooling fans cycled accelerated drafts, systems still buzzing from terrors faced alone to shield them from doom's sightless gaze.Â
"Frag if ya ain't the bravest thing this side'a Cybertron," Jazz rumbled. He pressed his faceplate into their shoulder holding them tightly, not willing to let go yet. Curling them protectively against the humming mass of his spark, Jazz vented shaky ex-vents. "Mah brave, beautiful li'l light...keep shinin' that fire, sweetspark." Jazz whispered raggedly into their shoulder.Â
IronhideÂ
Ironhide shoots at Megatron. His human companion latched to his back as he uses his body as a shield so the war lord couldn't get them. But they were making it rather hard as they tried antagonising Megatron.Â
"Damn did they build you like a shit box on Cybertron or did you pick this form yourself!" They shout out.Â
Ironhide careened across the scarred terrain, engine roaring as his heavy cannons unloaded volley after volley into the Con warlord's encroaching chassis. Megatron's howls shook the earth, armour blistering under Ironhide's righteous fury for daring to threaten his human lashed securely to broad backstruts.
"That's it, slaggertits, dance for me!" Ironhide bellowed back at Megatron.Â
Megatron lunged forward through a hailstorm of plasma, cannons charging in a frenzy to end lives denying his rule. But Ironhide spun on a dime, releasing another blast to cave in an optical relay before transforming ram-tight around you both.Â
His engine pounded like the Pit below, field alive with devotion harsh as his bearing yet gentle as newborn sparks flickering against red-and-blue armorweave. When Megatron gets too close they lob a can of WD-40 At him which Ironhide shoots cause it to explode in his face. "Get sunbeam shitlips!" They yell in delight as Ironhide takes off with them trying to get to safety.
"That's enough outta you, squishy," Ironhide rumbled, yet his cannons sang in harmony with your unbound spirit. His mission remained unchanged - shield the light of life, defying all forces that sought to smother its radiance. Ironhide's cannon fire consumed the volatile projectile in a brilliant fireball, engulfing Megatron in inferno. As they take off leaving Megatron in a fireball of energon and wounds.Â
"Right in the visual output, squishy!. Primus, I think I'm in love," Ironhide roared instatically, tires biting earth as he tore across the ravaged wastes well beyond enemy sensors. His spark soared like the smelting winds of Vos. Ironhide's engine purred a low rumble as his struts unwound, tension leaching from armour plating now safe. His field pulsed weariness, yet underlying it swirled pride and fierce gratitude for your indomitable spirit so small, yet burned brighter than any star.
"Can't say I approve of y'all's antics out there, squishy. But Primus if you didn't frag up that rustbucket good," Ironhide chuckled, copper-sheened plating creaking in amusement. Never had he witnessed such fearless bravery, nor met a soul so worthy of the praise.
"He had it coming, Ironhide! You're not going to tell prime are you?" They had just faced down Megatron and cursed him out yet they were worried over being ratted out. Ironhide's engine grumbled a tired huff, his massive frame unwinding into a sprawl across the barren earth. He transforms lifting them up into his arms
"I'd be a fool to deny you put the fear of Primus in that rustbucket," Ironhide chuckled. "But Prime's got enough weighin' his wires. Don't need him fryin' more circuits over our antics." A digit gently booped their nose, gaze softening. "Your spark burns brighter than all the Well's glory. Ain't no mech takin' that from you - least of all one as glitching as Megs."
"Our secret?" They asked looking up at him.
"Our secret, squishy.â Ironhide replied, massive frame creaking gently as massive fingers curled to cradle them against his chassis.

A Flicker of Connection - Thundercraker x reader
đľ He simply wanted someone to talk to.
----------------------------------
The first thing Thundercracker felt was betrayalâsharp, physical betrayal that seared across his faceplate, the blast striking him with a fury he shouldâve anticipated. But he hadnât expected Skywarp, of all mechs, to lash out like that. Perhaps heâd thought their years as trine, their shared battles and triumphs, would mean something.
But he was wrong. The mark of Skywarpâs anger, of his belief in Thundercrackerâs failure, still scarred his metal plating. Now, in this forgotten building, far from the battleâs aftermath, he hid in silence. An old, crumbling structure on the outskirts of a city teeming with humansâthe very beings he had risked everything to save. The glow of static from the Earth televisions heâd cobbled together washed over him, throwing flickering blue light across his frame as he replayed those events.
The scene from that day felt carved into his processor. Autobots and Decepticons, locked in vicious combat, and there heâd been, caught in between, feeling a gnawing sense of disgust for the very cause heâd once fought for. He remembered the humansâ faces, the terror etched into their expressions, and it had struck something deep within him. They were small, fragileâbut there was something else he couldn't name that seemed... worth saving.
Thundercrackerâs red optics dimmed as he watched the images on the screen shift to a romance film. Two humans, laughing, leaning close, as if their world consisted only of each other. It made no sense, these seemingly trivial displays. But he was drawn to it, this softer side of Earth culture, an escape from his own reality.
He didn't know how long heâd been hiding. Days, weeks? Time slipped by unnoticed, blending into one unbroken stretch of isolation. The world he knew was fractured, his purpose hazy, and it was only through these screens that he found fleeting distractions.
Suddenly, a faint noise made him freeze. There was a crunching of gravel outside, the slow approach of someoneâor somethingâtiptoeing toward him. Thundercracker immediately straightened, readying his blaster, though his energy levels were low, and he doubted he could manage more than a warning shot.
When he saw who stepped into the doorway, his optic shutters clicked open in surprise. A human. Young, wide-eyed, and staring at him as if he were some strange, unimaginable creature.
You froze as soon as you spotted him. For a second, you just stood there, wide-eyed, mouth half-open, trying to process what you were seeing: a massive, mechanical creature, battered and worn, watching you intently. You could feel your heartbeat thunder in your chest, but something kept you rooted in place, as if curiosity outweighed fear, just barely.
Thundercracker didnât move, watching you with equal surprise. He raised a hand slowly, almost in a placating gesture, and you flinched, nerves tense.
ââŚYouâreâŚyouâre real?â you whispered, more to yourself than to him.
Thundercrackerâs gaze softened slightly, though his tone remained guarded. âLast I checked,â he replied, the rumble of his voice reverberating through the empty space. The deep, almost gentle tone surprised you.
Your eyes flicked around nervously, your shoulders tense. âI, uh⌠Iâve heard of you guys in the news⌠seen the damage you can do, but I never thoughtââ You stopped yourself, swallowing visibly. âNever thought Iâd see one of you here.â Your voice was shaky, and you struggled to hold his gaze, feeling as though he could see right through you.
âMost wouldnât expect to.â He glanced at the floor, his optics narrowing slightly. âYouâre notâŚscared?â
âUhâŚâ You glanced at his scarred faceplate, the mangled remnants of what was once a proud Seeker helm. âMaybe a little.â
Thundercracker frowned at your answer but not in annoyance, just in confusion. âMaybe?â
You chuckled awkwardly, rubbing your neck. âOkay, a lot,â you admitted. âBut⌠I mean, if you wanted to hurt me, you wouldâve done it by now, right?â
Thundercracker tilted his head slightly, surprised by your audacity. Most humans would have run by now. But this oneâŚthis one was staying, even as their pulse quickened with obvious anxiety. âWhat are you doing here, then? Humans donât exactly wander into places like this without reason.â
You shrugged, trying to look casual though your nerves were clear. âI guess⌠Iâm just curious.â
Thundercracker raised a brow. "Curious?â
"About⌠you. Cybertronians.â You cast a sidelong glance at him. âEveryoneâs always talking about you all like youâre⌠some kind of monsters or gods. But here you are, sitting in an abandoned building, watching TV like⌠like a person.â
âTV?â His optics brightened, and you couldnât help but notice the way they flickered with interest. âYou call it TV?â
You blinked, momentarily thrown off by the shift in his tone. âUh, yeah. TV. Television?â
âInteresting.â Thundercracker looked back at the screen, where a couple danced slowly under a wash of soft lights. âHumans put a lot of effort into these⌠emotional displays. Itâs fascinating, how two individuals act as though they mean everything to each other.â
You cracked a small, hesitant smile. âWatching human movies, huh?â you teased softly, your fear melting into curiosity. âDidnât think giant robots were into romance films.â
He felt a strange spark at the teasing, something he hadnât felt in a long timeâalmost a sense of camaraderie, ridiculous as it was. âAlthough it is interesting, it is still⌠confusing,â he admitted, looking back at the screen. âHumans⌠they spend so much time on these things. I donât understand why.â
You laughed softly, surprised at yourself for feeling so at ease with him. âYeah, well, romance and emotions are kinda complicated.â The sound of your laughter caught him off guard. It was small but oddly comforting.
After a beat, you continued, âItâs about⌠connection, I guess. People want to feel close to someone else, to feel understood.â You looked at him, your expression softening. âIt probably sounds strange to you.â
Thundercracker was quiet for a moment, letting your words sink in. âConnectionâŚâ he murmured. You saw a flicker of something in his opticsâthoughtfulness, maybe? He looked so different from the images youâd seen of his kind.
He shifted slightly, his optics meeting yours. âAnd humans⌠how do they know when they have this⌠connection? What makes it worth the risk?â
The question hung in the air, heavier than youâd expected. You looked away, thinking hard. âItâs hard to explain,â you said finally, your voice thoughtful. âI guess⌠itâs when you meet someone who makes you feel less alone. Someone who cares even if they donât really have to. And even if itâs risky or scary, itâs worth it because⌠well, lifeâs kinda empty without it.â
Thundercracker absorbed this, his gaze softening as he tried to imagine it. It reminded him of his trine bond. It was bittersweet to think about their relationship now compared to before the war. They might argue but not to the extent of conflict like this. His wings drooped at the thought.
Seeing that, you felt a pang of sympathy. Without even thinking, you found yourself asking, âAre you okay?â Maybe it was too real, the way he expressed his emotions through his wings, the way his optics dimmed slightly. It wasnât anything like what youâd seen of Cybertronians beforeâthe images were always of emotionless machines, destructive and relentless.
Thundercracker was surprised by your question, realizing how vulnerable he must have looked. Slightly embarrassed, he coughed. "Why do you ask?"
You looked back at him, and for a moment, your gazes held. In that quiet space, you murmured, âNever mind.â Something shifted between you, a flicker of understanding that you couldnât quite name. For some reason, you felt a strange warmth toward himâa feeling that was both alarming and oddly comforting.
âSo⌠whatâs your favorite movie so far?â you asked, trying to break the intensity with a small smile.
His optics brightened slightly. "Movie?" .He grinned, looking back at the screen. âThere was this one⌠a detective story. The human tracked down his lost partner. Saved him in the end. A victory without killing. There are only adventures that the man must go through on his way to save his partner. He is not even physically strong but he never gives up. That tenacity is interesting.â Thundercracker's voice grew more excited as he talked about the movie.
You nodded, eyes bright with interest. âDetective dramas, huh? You like the mystery?â
Thundercracker let out a low chuckle. âI like the parts where they show their strengths without⌠violence. Where they find other ways.â
âYeah,â you agreed, feeling a warmth in your chest. âSometimes strength isnât about fighting. Itâs about⌠being there for someone, even if youâre scared or unsure.â You looked back at him, feeling something deeper, something that felt real. âI think thatâs something anyone can respect.â
Thundercracker considered that, his optics glowing dimly in the low light. Maybe he was more like these humans than heâd ever allowed himself to consider. Maybe, in a way, heâd been fighting the wrong battles for too long. The thought felt heavy, but at the same time, it lifted something in him.
The conversation ebbed into a gentle silence, the two of you just sitting thereâhim, a towering Cybertronian, and you, a small, fragile human. Both talked together, shared about movies, and sometimes made fun of silly things on tv.
You glanced at the screen, where another movie had startedâa comedy this timeâand chuckled softly. Then, checking your watch, you realized it was getting late. Talking to him made you lose track of time; the conversation felt like something you didnât want to break away from.
âI should probably get going,â you murmured, looking a little hesitant. âItâs getting late, andâŚI donât want anyone to find out Iâve been here.â
Thundercrackerâs optics brightened slightly as he processed your words. âLeaving already?â There was a touch of disappointment in his tone, something he hadnât intended to show.
His optics narrowed, the faintest glint of disappointment flashing across them. He hadnât realized how much heâd come to enjoy this conversation, this connection, however small.
âAre youâŚgoing to come back?â His question slipped out before he had a chance to think about it. He quickly looked away, trying to mask the hint of eagerness in his voice.
You turned back, looking up at him with a bit of surprise and maybe even a touch of sympathy. âIâŚI could, yeah,â you said softly, your eyes thoughtful. âI meanâŚif youâd like that.â
Thundercracker gave a small nod, attempting to appear casual though his gaze was intently focused on you. âI supposeâŚhaving someone around to explain thisâŚâTVââŚwould be useful.â There was a faint hint of a smirk in his tone, an attempt to lighten the moment. But there was a sincerity there.
Your lips quirked into a smile. âAlright, then,â you said, your tone soft but genuine. âIâll come by when I can. Show you a few more human classics. Who knows? Maybe youâll end up with a favorite.â
Thundercrackerâs optics softened. He could feel a glimmer of something he hadnât himself to feel in a long timeâhope. âI look forward to it,â he said, voice almost a murmur.
Thundercracker watched as you slipped out of the doorway, your form disappearing into the deepening shadows. He stayed there for a long time, his gaze fixed on the spot where you had stood, the quiet hum of the TV filling the empty space.
In that moment, he realized that for the first time in a long while, he had something to look forward toâhowever small, however fragile. A connection, as you had called it.

Summary: You're a mortal fisher that catches the attention of an ancient sea god without knowing it.

There was a small village that was cradled on the edge of an unknown island like a forgotten secret among humans, made out of solid stone, earth and sand while being shaped by the restless waves of the deep ocean. Narrow cobbled streets would wound between the homes of sun-bleached woods and weathered bricks while fine smoke curled up from the going chimneys, mingling with the salty sea air. Many signs of a life gathered around this place despite its unknown status.
The endless ocean surrounded the village on all sides, an eternal sentinel, its deep blue waves gently lapping at the shoreline as if it were whispering ancient lullabies. The sun hung low in the sky, casting the world in hues of gold and lavender, where the horizon blurred into a seamless meeting of sea and sky. The sound of gulls crying in the distance echoed through the air, carried by the wind that rustled through the tall grasses and wildflowers growing at the islandâs edge.
Farther out, where the cliffs rose jagged and defiant against the endless ocean, the waves crashed with a furious roar, sending white spray high into the air. Yet here, within the village, the sea was gentleâa mirror reflecting the skyâs fading light.
Small fishing boats bobbed in the harbor, tethered to wooden posts worn smooth by years of use. Their painted hulls were chipped and faded, yet they held a quiet dignity, as if they had borne witness to centuries of tides, storms, and the steady rhythm of life. Nets hung drying on the docks, draped like lace over the old wood, waiting for the morning light to send the fishermen back to the open sea.
The wind picked up, carrying with it the scent of salt and damp earth. A few villagers, their faces lined with age and the seaâs touch, gathered in quiet conversation near the docks, their voices low, as if unwilling to disturb the peace. Lanterns flickered to life in the twilight, casting a soft, golden glow over the village, like stars scattered across the earth.
As the day gave way to dusk, the village seemed to breathe, a living thing, connected to the ocean and sky in a way that was timeless. The sea, the cliffs, the forestâthey were all one with the village, woven into its very being. And as the stars began to emerge, one by one, above the endless horizon, the island seemed to settle into itself, cradled by the oceanâs eternal embrace, waiting for whatever secrets the tides might bring.
"Listen, my child. Our story began long ago, when the gods still walked the earth and the stars were young."
Once upon a timeâŚ
The land was molded by the hands of glorious deities, their fingers painting the skies and carving the rivers. They placed the sun on the horizon and the plains upon the earth. The world flourished, but with its growth came envy, as some gods overshadowed others. To gain power, they created lifeâhumans, born from their desire for control.
At first, humans worshiped their creators with devotion, pledging loyalty to one deity, then betraying the next. They defiled the divine in their thirst for more, striking down gods one by one. Until, at last, only humans remained, reigning over the world they had once been given. The gods, once mighty, were destroyed by the very hands that they had shaped.
The lesson was clear for the mortals: gods could not be trusted.
You grew up in the small village, cradled by the sea, raised between the wind and the waves as if you were a child of nature itself. The first thing you learned was your origin, that you were descended from the godsâgods who were flawed and fallible. Your grandparents told you stories of your ancestors, how they fought with their lives for the right to live on this island, battling forces far beyond their comprehension.
Ages ago, a fierce god named Solace ruled over these waters. His rage, directed at both his siblings and their creations, churned the oceans into relentless fury. Your ancestors tried to cross the waters for months, many drowned and many got sacrificed to soothe the will of the deity that ruled in the waters. His anger blinded Solace, his envy and his feelings were like a sharp sword, pointed at himself. Your ancestors tricked him, like they did with so many other deities before. They sealed him into the ocean, robbing him of his necklace that he wore. And after they triumphed over him, the ocean came to rest. All thanks to the necklace that secretly holds Solace his powers.
A necklace that rested around your neck, a family piece that was given down as the generations passed. It was a sea shell pendant, reflecting in beautiful blue-silver hues as if the sea itself was placed upon you. And you wore it with pride.
Your mother gave it to you the day you joined the family tradition, stepping into the life of a fisher. It was a simple gift, passed down through generations, as much a symbol of your heritage as the sea itself. You learned to live in harmony with the waves, to respect the life beneath the surface, and to take only what was needed. Your family had always been blessed by the ocean, and so would you. It was honest workâgive and takeâwhere you not only harvested from the sea but also protected it, keeping it clean and honoring its depths.
"Keep calm," you murmured to yourself, the words a quiet mantra as you sat in your small boat. The sun was warm on your back as you focused on tying the loose strings of your net, the gentle rocking of the boat a familiar comfort.
Your mother had taught you to knit the nets in the old traditional way, every knot a connection to your ancestors. Your father, in turn, had shown you the art of fishingâhow to hunt with respect, how to make the death of the fish swift and painless, and how to use every part of it in reverence for the life taken. A true fisher never wastes, for the sea gives generously but only to those who understand its balance.
The rhythm of your hands, the whisper of the wind, and the quiet lap of the waves against the boatâthey all wove together like a song. You were part of something much larger than yourself, connected to the ancient currents of the sea, just as your family had always been.
You lifted your finished net, admiring the neat knots with a smile of quiet pride. A rush of happiness filled your chest as you hugged the net, feeling accomplished. You had honored the legacy of your ancestors, crafting the tool with care, just as they had done for generations. It was a simple but profound joy, knowing that you were connected to something so old and enduring.
With a steady breath, you prepared to cast the net into the water, hoping for a good catch to feed your family tonight. The gentle hum of the waves blended with your thoughts, and as the net unfurled, you missed the soft snap of a string breaking. But the sudden blue shimmer at the corner of your eye did not go unnoticed.
Your heart dropped as you realized it was your necklaceâthe one your mother had given you. Somehow, it had tangled itself in the net, and as you began to fish, it slipped from your neck effortlessly, tumbling into the water before you could react. You watched in stunned silence as the delicate jewelry disappeared beneath the surface, swallowed by the depths in an instant.
The sea, ever so calm just moments ago, now seemed impossibly vast and unyielding. That necklace was more than just a piece of jewelry; it was a part of you, a part of your family. And now, it was gone.
It sank slowly, the glimmering stone catching the last rays of sunlight as it shimmered just beneath the surface, suspended in the water like a delicate promise about to be broken. You watched, helpless, as it drifted deeper, the blue hue of the ocean swallowing it whole. Your heart pounded in your chest, a heavy sense of dread filling you as the necklaceâyour link to your family, your ancestorsâvanished silently into the dark water below.
Your hands slackened, the net forgotten, slipping from your grasp into the boat. Without a second thought, instinct took over. Before you even realized what you were doing, you dove headfirst into the water, chasing the fading glint of silver.
The coldness of the ocean hit you like a shock, but you didnât care. You kicked your legs, your arms pushing against the water, desperately reaching for the necklace as it continued its slow descent. The light above you grew dimmer as you sank deeper, the world around you a muffled echo of the surface. You could barely see now, the shimmering silver reduced to a distant gleam.
The water pressed in on you, chilling your skin and constricting your lungs. Panic began to claw at the edges of your mind, but you couldnât stopâwouldnât stop. It was more than just an heirloom; it was the weight of your ancestorsâ blessings, the legacy of your family, and it was slipping further and further away.
Your lungs began to burn, the pressure of the deep water pressing against your chest, but still, you reached out, fingers stretching into the darkness. The necklace was now just a faint blur, fading into the abyss. Desperation surged through you as your arms flailed in the icy depths.
The darkness was overwhelming, the cold water pressing in on all sides as you sank deeper, the faint shimmer of your necklace vanishing into the abyss. Your chest burned, lungs screaming for air, but your limbs were too heavy, too numb. The weight of the ocean dragged you down, and for a moment, you felt yourself surrendering to the pull, the necklace gone.
But then, something strange happened. A warmth surrounded you, gentle and reassuring, cutting through the icy water. A firm hand wrapped around your waist, pulling you upwards with a strength that felt both human and not. Yet, the darkness caught you and you passed out.
The first thing you felt was a pair of warm lips on yours, innocent, shy and yet somewhat dedicated. A wet hand was placed close to your throat. Then your head shot up as reality caught up to you, the water in your lungs creeping up your throat as you coughed it all out.
Coughing, disoriented, you blinked away the saltwater from your eyes, the world around you blurred. As your vision cleared, you found yourself being held by a manâno, something far more. His eyes, a deep and endless blue, locked onto yours. His presence was as overwhelming as the ocean itself, powerful and ancient, yet there was a softness in the way he held you.
You opened your mouth to speak, but no words came. The stranger's arm was still wrapped around you, steadying you against the gentle rocking of the waves. His dark hair flowed around him, as though it were a part of the sea, and his skin, shimmering faintly in the light, seemed to glow with a quiet radiance. He wasnât human, no, but he felt familiar.
âBreathe,â he whispered, his voice like the soft murmur of the tide, calming and steady.
You did, drawing in deep, shaky breaths, your heart still racing from the shock. âWho⌠who are you?â you stammered, your voice weak, barely above a whisper.
He gazed at you for a long moment, his expression unreadable but his eyes filled with something tender, something that made your chest tighten in a way that had nothing to do with fear. "Sebastian," he finally said, his voice a low, soothing rumble. "I live within these waters."
You nodded slowly, still dazed, as you tried to comprehend what had just happened. The cold of the water, the rush of drowning, and now⌠this.
Then, the realization hit you like a wave crashing over your head. âMy necklace,â you breathed, panic swelling inside you again. You turned to look down into the water, but there was no shimmer, no sign of the silverish blue. âItâs gone⌠my necklace⌠I lost it.â
Sebastianâs eyes followed yours, and for a moment, a flicker of something like regret passed over his face. âThe sea does not return everything,â he said quietly, his voice filled with a kind of sorrow that seemed to echo from somewhere deep within him. "Not all that it takes can be given back."
Your heart sank, the weight of his words settling heavily inside you. The necklaceâyour family's necklaceâwas gone, lost forever to the depths. Tears pricked at your eyes, but you fought them back, not wanting to break down in front of this strange, beautiful man who had saved your life.
Sebastianâs gaze softened as he watched you, and before you could react, his hand reached up, brushing gently against your cheek, his touch feather-light. âIâm sorry,â he murmured, and you could hear the sincerity in his voice, the sadness that lingered in his words. âI wish I could have saved it for you.â
You swallowed hard, nodding, though the ache in your chest was still raw. âIt was my familyâŚâ you whispered, your voice trembling. âIt was important.â
He didnât say anything for a moment, simply letting his fingers linger against your skin, his presence steady, grounding. âYour family's memory doesnât live in that necklace,â he said softly, his eyes searching for yours. âIt lives in you. In everything you carry with you. That cannot be lost, not to the sea or anything else.â
His words, gentle and warm, wrapped around your heart like a soothing balm. You nodded again, still feeling the loss, but somehow, in his presence, the grief didnât feel quite so unbearable.
For a moment, you simply floated there together, the waves lapping gently against your bodies, the sun casting a warm, golden light over the surface of the water. Sebastianâs hand stayed close to yours, his touch lingering, as though he couldnât quite bring himself to let you go.
âWhy did you help me?â you asked after a long silence, your voice barely above a whisper, unsure if you wanted the answer.
Sebastianâs gaze flickered, his deep blue eyes searching yours. âBecause,â he said softly, a hint of something more in his voice, something unspoken, âI couldnât let you go.â
There was something in the way he looked at you, an intensity that made your breath catch in your throat. You couldnât understand it, the pull between you two, but it was undeniable. He had saved youânot just from drowning, but from something deeper, something you couldnât quite name.
For now, you let the quiet peace of the ocean surround you, content in his presence, even as the necklace drifted farther into the depths, lost but somehow no longer the most important thing in your heart.
You finally took the time to admire his large form, he was as pretty as the mermaids from the childhood stories, as gentle looking as the ocean and his eyes, his eyes were like the ones of a god. You never saw someone like him before, but he mesmerized you.
He had placed you back into your boat, his hand lingered a bit longer on your cheek than anticipated and you could feel a mutual spark between you two.
