On the verge of crying, he searches for any kind of disgust or dislike on your expression yet he only finds.. adoration. the same adoration you always have for everything. but now it's different, there's a special joy at the sight of his disfigured face.
"a-aren't you scared..?" he mutters, his insecurities still present.
"scared?" You chuckle softly and caresses his cheeks gently, feeling his scarred skin. it's been a while since he felt someone's loving touch. "Why would I be scared of my Sal? My sweet, beautiful Sal?"
his heart skips a bit and buries his face on your palm, looking for your warmth. He decides to trust, just like you. He can see it's true. He can see the sparks in your eyes as you look at him, with or without his prosthetic. no matter what, he is your Sal, that's what makes him beautiful for you. it makes him feel beautiful. he looks into your eyes again as he promises to himself he'll always make you feel the same way.

there's something about the way people talk about john gaius (incl the way the author writes him) that is like. so absent of any connection to te ao māori that it's really discomforting. like even in posts that acknowledge him as not being white, they still talk about him like a white, american leftist guy in a way that makes it clear people just AREN'T perceiving him as a māori man from aotearoa.
and it's just really serves to hammer home how powerful and pervasive whiteness and american hegemony is. because TLT is probably the single most Kiwi series in years to explode on the global stage, and all the things i find fraught about it as a pākehā woman reading a series by a pākehā author are illegible to a greater fandom of americans discoursing about whether or not memes are a valid way of portraying queer love.
idk the part of my brain that lights up every time i see a capital Z printed somewhere because of the New Zealand Mentioned??? instinct will always be proud of these books and muir. but i find myself caught in this midpoint of excitement and validation over my culture finding a place on the global stage, frustration at how kiwi humour and means of conveying emotion is misinterpreted or declared facile by an international audience, frustrated also by how that international audience runs the characters in this book through a filter of american whiteness before it bothers to interpret them, and ESPECIALLY frustrated by how muir has done a pretty middling job of portraying te ao māori and the māoriness of her characters, but tht conversation doesn't circulate in the same way* because a big part of the audience doesn't even realise the conversation is there to be had.
which is not to say that muir has done a huge glaring racism that non-kiwis haven't noticed or anything, but rather that there are very definitely things that she has done well, things that she has done poorly, things that she didn't think about in the first book that she has tacked on or expanded upon in the later books, that are all worthy of discussion and critique that can't happen when the popular posts that float past my dash are about how this indigenous man is 'guy who won't shut up about having gone to oxford'
*to be clear here, i'm not saying these conversations have never happened, just that in terms of like, ambient posts that float round my very dykey dash, the discussions and meta that circulate on this the lesbian social media, are overwhelmingly stripped of any connection to aotearoa in general, let alone te ao māori in specific. and because of the nature of american internet hegemony this just,,,isn't noticed, because how does a fish know it's in the ocean u know? i have seen discussions along these lines come up, and it's there if i specifically go looking for it, but it's not present in the bulk of tlt content that has its own circulatory life and i jut find that grim and a part of why the fandom is difficult to engage with.

This was going to be a panel of a little comic but I got too invested in drawing minute background details so, here.
#They are having an argument over 1) whether crops can be grown on the moons 2) what - if any - impact does this have on the feasibility#of an afterlife being located on the moons#Brakul is a partial convert to the Imperial Wardi faith but this mostly entails having adopted the seven faced God (and some#other elements of the belief system) into his worldview and participating in expected rites while retaining his central#ancestor veneration practices completely unchanged and mostly prioritized.#This doesn't actually cause much friction in of itself with the big exception being disagreements on the afterlife#Wardi practices surrounding death prioritize proper handling of the corpse and funerary rites in order to get the dead where they#need to be- death is a fraught transition from one state to another. analogous to birth. The role of the living is to get the dead through#this transition (preventing them from being stuck earthbound as earthbound ghosts - which is the Bad afterlife). Once the dead#make it to the moons that's it. They don't really interact with the living. There's plenty of conceptualization of what it's Like#in the lunar lands but the cultural priority is not even slightly on the Logistics of existence there.#Whereas the CORE of religious practice among the Hill Tribes is ancestor veneration - ancestors remain interactive with the living#and require/desire their continual support. They are conceptualized as having earthlike 'lives' where they eat and drink#and grow crops and herd livestock and they need the support of the living (in prayers and offerings) to do so prosperously.#There is a HIGH cultural priority on the logistics of their afterlife and it's self-apparent that the world of the dead needs fertile earth#to support them.#So like bottom line Brakul thinks there's no goddamn way that the moons could support an afterlife (they are described as#barren rock that was flung into the sky during creation and certainly Look that way)#and that the Wardi are just wrong about their afterlife's location. They probably go to the celestial fields (which are located#behind the moons and stars) like everyone else#And Janeys finds this aggravating and doesn't see his fucking point but has developed a nagging concern that Brakul Could be#partly right in that the celestial fields could Maybe exist in addition to the lunar lands.#So like maybe they aren't going to go to the same place when they die?#He's already terrified that he'll be stuck as an earthbound ghost and really doesn't want to be even further separated so#he figures he should make sure he gets himself dead and cremated at the same time as Brakul so they can navigate the#transitional period together.#Brakul is unconcerned because he figures that if Janeys actually does get stuck on those barren ass moons he can just kinda#Go Get Him#Ancestor spirits fly to the earth all the time and the moons would be a much shorter distance. Probably wouldn't be an issue.#Long story short these disagreements and underlying anxieties result in fights over whether you can grow corn on the moons or nah

You know what's neat? High fantasy battle shounen comics that think about these little logistic details.
In Ten Earth-Shattering Blows (which isn't really "Battle Shounen", but shh), the battle between Joy and Pangreto is over before it starts, because Joy entered the room with her axe down the back of her shirt, and getting it out will take longer than it will take Pangreto to draw his sword and kill her. I've seen tons of comics where characters with much less practical setups don't encounter any kind of logistical difficulty. A lot of people kind of elide over that kind of stuff (including my own comic Saffron and Sage), but here it's the defining move of the "fight", with Joy immediately understanding that she's fucked if she makes a move, and now the next time Joy changes outfits everyone's going to pay more attention because we know it'll be important where exactly her axe is.
(Also, tangent, but the speed lines fading into the wooden roof in panel 7 is just cool)
Meanwhile, in Star Impact, Puck and Stryker are discussing Dove's fighting style (itself kind of unusual for battle shounen, where a lot of protagonists never think to look up what their opponents can do in advance), and spend a few pages talking about how his cartoonishly long arms can be a double-edged sword because he can't fully extend his arms at close range.
This stuff gives a lot of texture to these fights, and makes the worldbuilding a bit stronger because it actually matters. You don't need an elaborate magic system to make fights distinct and interesting if you can get drama out of "Shirt is an inconvenient axe-holder" or "Arms too big".

tbh i think the idea that predathos wouldn't go after lesser idols or celestials because they're not big enough sources of divinity for it to want is one of those things that feels the most...idk, ridiculous to me? like, if predathos even consumes any minor divine healing that happens around it, it feels a bit silly to think it would ONLY eat the gods because it can ONLY attack large sources of divinity, or whatever. like what is about the gods that makes it attack them personally and not anything else? IS it sheer volume of divinity? is it something else? I literally don't know! and if it does specifically consume divinity, it feels like there's no reason it wouldn't try to eat lesser idols and celestials except as a pulled punch cop-out for why releasing predathos wouldn't completely decimate the cosmic ecosystem. this is, tbh, my biggest ???? about this whole thing

doodling Foul Legacy in the margins of your papers when you're bored at work. it happens almost naturally whenever you have a minute of free time or are in a particularly dull meeting, pen idly running over the edges of your notes, and when you glance down again a tiny little Foul Legacy all in ink stares back up at you. you blink. he doesn't blink back, but it's almost like he could. you doodle a few more just for fun, each squishier and bloopier that the last, culminating in an ink-Legacy blepping his tongue at you. of course, you make sure not to obscure the writing you've done. but doesn't the paper look just a little livelier with so many tiny Legacies all around?
at the end of the day you neatly tear off the sketches you've done, safely tucking them away in your coat. Foul Legacy will love them- he adores it when you make him look cute rather than fearsome. and you simply couldn't resist adding a doodle of your favorite Harbinger, running around with a silly grin and both of his blades made of Hydro.
you just know these will be displayed on clips around your house.
