#eShop shut down

There is just one week left before the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop close.
With Nintendo up to it's bad old tricks of shutting down its online shop services. Riven has been hard at work making a note of the best games to get on the service. In the case of the Wii U many of the games have been ported to Nintendo Switch with extra content or are available on other formats. There are still a few exclusive games worth picking up along with their download content. Titles like Affordable Space Adventures, Pokémon Rumble U, Chasing Aurora & Dr. Luigi.
However the more concerning issue is the 3DS and the amount of games that will be removed from the service and along with their respective download content. The first problem is this is poorly documented across the net, most DLC downloads aren't listed in the eShop instead can only be accessed in-game while other games have special download content that is free to all users.
Some download links look like they don't connect to the Nintendo server so may remain up for some time after the store closes, but we can't be 100% sure on this. Word of warning some games like, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past require you beat the game to access the DLC...
So Riven spent three days last years trying to draw a list of every Japan, European and North American game that features download content for the 3DS. Checking various online sources and our own research to create the most complete list on the internet we can find and you can access it here via Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XEDYGOzT1ZPQQ60NCaCaPkqV5QQwULGy/view?usp=sharing
It's not a perfect list so if there are any games we are missing let us know! Contact us via twitter, e.mail or leave a comment and Riven will add missing games asap. From our own research series like Level 5's Inazuma Eleven & Yo-Kai Watch are very poorly documented and all of them area to have some form of free download. Most of the Yo-Kai Watch games also have DLC that is only available to people who buy the game digitally.
We will have a video on the subject in the next two days. Do be aware that you will need to upgrade your 3DS and Wii U SD memory cards if you plan on downloading a lot of games. Both systems also have a hard limit of 300 system icons, the Switch has one of a 1000. At which point you will have to delete a download game to download another. That's not mentioning the fact Nintendo will block credit card use on a Switch for a month if you make too many purchases. You must have linked you 3DS and Wii U account to a modern Switch / Nintendo website account to still add funds.

Did you know that Ingo and Emmet were officially featured in a 3DS theme? This theme is called "Pokemon Mate" or "Pokemon Friends" in the US and it featured several characters from Pokemon BW!! This was part of the Pokemon Mate line in Japan (where the chibi Submas keychains came from) and it released merch of Skyla, Submas, Elesa, N, Cheren, Hilbert, and Hilda!
This theme was the last thing I managed to download on my 3DS before the eShop and the Theme Shop shut down. Now, it is my current theme and it's perfect for my run of Pokemon White! That, and it features several of my favorite characters from Gen 5, including the funny train men!!
You can see it in action in the video below!

The new abilities shown off in today’s Zelda footage reminded me that sometimes Nintendo is really good at responding to fan criticism.
Some of the biggest complaints BOTW fans share are about weapon durability. The goal of that mechanic was to encourage weapon variety, but players didn’t like to lose weapons they’d worked hard to get.
Instead of adding some sort of repair bench or just removing durability altogether, they introduced a mechanic that lets you improve the durability of weapons by gluing another weapon to it. Now, you’re incentivized to explore weapon variety in a way that doesn’t punish you for sticking with the same weapon!
Between that and the Ascend ability basically making climbing stamina problems obsolete, TotK really seems to have a theme of addressing player concerns without compromising the spirit of the game.
#feels weird making a post about how good Nintendo is at responding to fans after the eShop got shut down#I thought about mentioning this in the main post but it kinda felt like a false dichotomy#I imagine there isn’t much overlap between the people who make game design decisions and ecommerce business decisions#Zelda#tears of the kingdom

It's the end of an era.
"Nintendo 3DS eShop, I bid you take your place in the halls of Valhalla, where the brave shall live forever. Nor shall we mourn but rejoice, for those that have died the glorious death.”

Wow. Look at this funny character! I’m sure his backstory about why he wears that fursuit is totally normal and he just loves animals a lot.

okay but like. how did they distribute qr codes for blasters and 3 like. i know the official uploads of anime episodes on youtube had qr codes at the end or smth like that but. i don't think they did that for the anime's whole english run??? and also i'm pretty sure those were just crank-a-kai coins and not for special yo-kai so. where did those qr codes come from???
#puppy rambles#yo-kai watch#ywb#yw3#also irrelevant but how do you get the gemnyans in 2#i scanned one of the qr codes and it said i had too many of that crank-a-kai coin but i had none so???#every other qr code was working fine so it's not cuz of the eshop shutting down or anything (thank god)

Well it's official. The Wii U and 3DS eShops are officially dead.
I didn't buy anything.
Not because I'm excited about emulating or don't wanna reward Nintendo for shutting down the store, but because MY WII U DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING
What do you mean just delete the Xenoblade X data packs? Do you know how many updates for other games I deleted just to ensure I had those?
Anyways, RIP to the best console for emulating other consoles. While slow, it truly shined by giving people an official way to play so many classic titles. It's a shame the Switch is not picking up that slack.
#still slightly salty it couldn't just play gamecube discs#because like it was totally capable#all nintendo had to do was basically enable it in the software#literally the only reason i want that is for an hdmi signal for gamecube games#i did play gc titles on my modded system and it was flawless#just the save data was very iffy and it kept refusing to read it so that's why i shut down that method#oh yeah and RIP 3DS too#great little system but mine was just an animal crossing machine#god happy home designer was so good not enough people talk about how good it was#wii u#eshop#nintendo

nintendo putting out a patch for the 3ds isnt because they hate that youre using it, trying to brick it the way apple does with its products, its because they absolutely despise hackers. theres a long history of nintendo thwarting 3ds hackers every chance they could to an absolutely vile degree. recently they took down youtubers videos of them modding games, even using copywright strikes to scare youtubers into not causing a fuss.
releasing a patch that prevents you from hacking your 3ds right after people were spreading the word on how to do so is not a coincidence
#also nintendo shutting down the eshop was inevitably going to happen#thats not inherently them trying to fuck over old consoles that is always gunna happen#them refusing to bring those eshop titles to other platforms IS a major fucking problem

I really hoped game freak got rid of event pokemon, but walking wake and iron leaves were only available for less than a month. And they didn't even give them to you, you had to earn them. Game freak stop doing pointless shit challenge level impossible
#rob.txt#It's arguable about dlc pokemon. I guess not because in a few years the eshop will shut down and they won't be available anymore#But hopefully they'll be available in other games by then?

See I have the opposite problem where I literally only started playing video games in the 2010s when I was in my 30s so I have absolutely NO conception of video game history and what video games looked like in the early aughts. i'll look at something like the gen4 pokemon games and be like "oh yeah the graphics look cute and dinky bc that came out in 1995 right" and then i'll look up the actual release date and be like "....what do you mean 2008"
#lol#its funny cos my sister the neurotypical one actually got into gaming before i did (and only briefly)#she was really into the ace attorney games back when we were attending japanese school#and i remember our trip to japan in like i think 2008 or 2009 and#she#literally bought a 3DS there so she could play the latest game that just came out#she was like 'THIS IS REALLY HARD BUT I AM LEARNING SO MANY LEGAL TERMS IN JAPANESE" lolololllolol and i was like girl you are fking insane#you and your silly little video games#and here we are like 15+ years later shes married has a career and a kid#while i am playing silly little video games#how the turntables etc#this is also how i know “OBJECTION!!” is “IGIYARI!!!!” in japanese bc she would yell it at me ALL THE FUCKING TIME#funny thing but i bought a 3ds last year before the eshop shut down and bought a couple of ace attorney games to go with the layton ones#so i will finally? see what the fuss is about ig??
