DAMON/ELENA BRACKET ROUND 1 CHAMPIONSHIP

1.19 Damon just told Elena about Stefan’s blood binging, and now Stefan is MIA. Elena’s name is called, and she descends the stairs in her beautiful gown, nobody waiting at the bottom for her. Damon, standing in the crowd, looks around, realizes what is happening, elbows his way to the front, and smoothly steps up to wait for her. Her face softens in gratitude, he gazes up at her. She takes his hand and whispers, “Where’s Stefan?” “I don’t know,” Damon whispers back. And then, together, they step into the light. Jenna watches them walk by and asks, “What is she doing with Damon?” Alaric answers, “I have no idea.” “What are we gonna do?” Elena asks.  Damon answers, “Right now we just have to get through this.” And then they dance. Damon starts to smile at Elena, and then after a moment, she starts to smile back. She’s not panicked anymore. The soundtrack provides telling commentary: “Can you still see the heart of me? / All my agony fades away / When you hold me in your embrace / Don’t tear me down for all I need /Make my heart a better place / Give me something I can believe”

1.14 Elena goes alone to the Salvatore boardinghouse to try to get Damon to trust them again. “I’m gonna have to change the locks,” he says when he sees her. She tells him she’s not going to apologize for getting the grimoire without him, because she was trying to protect the people she loves - “But so are you, in your own, twisted way, and as hard as it is to figure, we’re all on the same side because we all want the same thing.” “Not interested,” Damon says. “Yes you are, because you were willing to work with us yesterday!” Outrage and hurt fly across Damon’s face before he settles into wry self-deprecation: “Fool me once…shame on you.” Elena switches tactics abruptly: “Okay, when we were in Atlanta, why didn’t you use your compulsion on me?” He shoots back, “Who’s to say I didn’t?” Elena is taken off guard, and says, “You didn’t.” He raises his eyebrows. “I know you didn’t,” she repeats more firmly.  “But you could have. You and I…we have something. An understanding. And I know my betrayal hurt you, different from how it is with Stefan, but I’m promising you this now, I will help you get Katherine back.”  He appears to struggle with this before saying, “I wish I could believe you.”  She takes her necklace off, holds it up.  “Ask me if I’m lying now.”  She puts the necklace on the ground and faces him. Damon picks up the necklace and fastens it back around Elena’s neck, while she looks up into his eyes. “I didn’t compel you in Atlanta because we were having fun,” he tells her softly. “I wanted it to be real…I’m trusting you.” Then his voice hardens: “Don’t make me regret it.”

MONTHLY MEDIA: August 2024

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler. The summer is waning. But the monthly media posts carry on. Here's how I spent the month of August.

……….FILM……….

Wendell & Wild (2022) I don't want this to be one of the last major stop-motion film to ever be made, but the filmmakers put so many stories into this that I wonder if they thought this was their last shot. Essentially a 12-course meal from a great restaurant: the accomplishment is impressive but the whole is overstuffed and some of the smaller portions were undercooked.

Love Lies Bleeding (2024) The lightly surreal elements of the movie were great, but there's a point late in the story when that surreality kills all of the momentum.

Spice World (1997) Still holds up.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) Still amazed at how well this pulls off what it seeks to do. But maybe I'm biased because I love practical effects, puppets, and action scenes that serve the narrative. We may not get another D&D movie but I'm glad we have this one.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Based on other live-action multiverses, I went in with modest expectations, and this was a pleasant surprise. Maybe it's because it continues to do what Deadpool does well. Thoroughly entertaining in the moment.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Episode 1.14 to 1.20) It's been a couple of years since I stopped watching (mid season!) but luckily one of the episodes was essentially a recap of what's happened so far. Really ramping up in the abstract and the philosophical and I'm a big fan. These kids are meeeeeeeessed up.

Made for Love (Episode 2.01 to 2.08) I only really caught the first season in pieces but I knew enough going into this season that it really clicked! It hit me the same way early Black Mirror episodes felt, only with more humour, depth, and nuance. It's a real shame there's no plans for season 3.

I'm What the Culture Feeling (The full story of Kendrick Vs. Drake) by F.D. Signifier Almost 3.5 hours but for someone like me (who knows next to nothing of this world, these artists, or this conflict) it expertly breaks it all down to paint a complete picture. Really great watch. VIDEO

Cards On the Table by Agatha Christie (Complete) Top-tier Christie. The premise is so fun, and while I know the multiple detectives appear in other stories, it's a nice introduction to these characters. This book made me want to learn how to play Bridge.

The People of the Black Circle and A Witch Shall Be Born by Robert E. Howard (Complete) I have this collection of Conan stories and after a years-long break, decided to read a few more. Both great! The latter puts Conan in an almost supporting role and it's fun to see him take on a secondary role to the story. Keeps it interesting. And the former is such a classic pulp story (cults, magic clothing, a giant snake) that I can't help but love it.

Delicious in Dungeon Volume 14 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) It's been a 6-year-long journey for me and while I couldn't be happier with how it ended, I'm sad that it's over. Still so impressed with how well it stuck the landing for me. Do I wish there was more of a wind-down with these characters? Sure. But I really respect an artist who knows what they want to say/do and says/does it. Very excited to see what Ryoko does next.

Hellboy Library Volume 1 by Mike Mignola with John Byrne (Complete) Without being hyperbolic, this is one of my favourite contributions to the craft. So confident and fully-formed right out of the gate. Excited to reread this series.

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappel Roan (2023) Technically I started listening to this at the end of July. I saw a positive review, figured I'd check it out, and it felt like that was at the same time everyone else in the world was talking about her. Love an album with such a focused perspective.

Currents by Tame Impala (2015) In recent years I've been really enjoying Tame Impala's one-off songs (Barbie and Dungeons & Dragons soundtracks, their collaboration with Gorillaz, etc.) so I figured I'd really dig into this album. Easy to listen to both casually in the background and with a magnifying glass just pouring over the lyrics. Love it.

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) Only got a few sessions in this month but the crew is still reassembling the skeletal pirate they trashed years (real time) ago. Now they're about to face a big electric centipede to recover his legs.

Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 crew split the party and one half casually shopped and planned while the other half discovered a secret testing facility full of captured magic-users.

Wonderland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) We got in a single session of Wonderland and it was a small party but a lot of fun! Also the first true character death of our playtesters. Luckily we had backup characters though character 2 ended the session losing their arm. Hey that's Wonderland.

This adobe hacienda was built in 1873! It’s gorgeous and was originally built in Tucson, Arizona as the US Calvary’s trading post, so it’s a real piece of history. It has 5bds./5baths, and priced at $1.350M.

Look at the beautiful entrance doors.

I think I like how they accented the beams in the hall with gray paint.

Looks like a library, but look at the windows giving a view of the hall.

Love the ceilings, lighting, and floors. Light, airy dining room with a fireplace and original niche.

I like the little mural in the kitchen- it’s just the right touch.

Wonderful kitchen- look at the original oven.

Tile counters and a serving window for the dining room.

A tree in the house! How cool is that?

Cada escolha implica uma ação. Cada ação tem um impacto em nossas vidas, nas vidas das outras pessoas e no mundo em geral. Mas segundo o quê devemos agir? Quais são os princípios que devemos considerar em nossas decisões? O que deve informar e direcionar nossas ações?

"Quem é prudente age com conhecimento, mas o tolo espalha a sua tolice", assim nos instrui a Palavra do Senhor (Pv. 13.16). Quer dizer, aquele que, diante das diversas escolhas da vida, deseja agir com prudência, deve buscar agir com conhecimento. Agir com conhecimento significa agir com discernimento e com entendimento (Pv. 2.11). Significa saber discernir cada decisão de acordo com o correto entendimento da justiça, do juízo e da equidade (Pv. 2.9). Significa compreender cada situação, cada pessoa, cada instrumento para que tenhamos vida em nossa alma, para que andemos com segurança e nos deitemos com tranquilidade (Pv. 3.21-24). O Senhor, por meio da Sua sabedoria lançou os fundamentos da terra e, por meio do Seu conhecimento, estabeleceu os céus (Pv. 3.19-20). Portanto, buscar conhecimento é, também, uma forma de louvor e adoração a Deus. De fato, "O temor do Senhor é o princípio do saber, mas os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e o ensino" (Pv. 1.7).

Busquemos, pois, ao Senhor, afim de obter sabedoria, discernimento e entendimento. Não vivamos como o tolo que vive pretensamente por meio da sua própria tolice, sem compreender a realidade, as pessoas, os meios e os fins; sem compreender, o mais importante, que é a sabedoria do Senhor. Estejamos sempre atentos ao ouvir a Sua Palavra, buscando nEla a régua para medir nossas ações. Louvemos a Deus em todas as nossas decisões, buscando agir com prudência, no santo temor, para a glória de Deus (1 Co. 10.31) e para o bem do nosso próximo (Mt. 7.12).

Gratidão

Graças lhe rendemos, ó Senhor, pois criastes os céus e a terra com Sua sabedoria e através dela sustenta tudo o que existe. O Senhor não recusa conhecimento e entendimento àqueles que buscam obter no santo temor (Pv. 2.3-10). Graças pelo Seu amado Filho, Jesus Cristo, que é a Sua Sabedoria, a Sua Palavra, que estava no princípio quando todas as coisas foram feitas por Ele e por meio dEle (Jo. 1.3,10). Mais importante ainda, não buscamos sabedoria no santo temor. Desprezamos com frequência a instrução e a sabedoria. Deixamos de confiar no Senhor, buscando alicerce em nosso próprio entendimento.
