PAUL: This was getting towards the psychedelic period when we were interested in winking to our friends and comrades in arms, putting in references that we knew our friends would get but that the Great British Public might not. <…> I remember with the prick teasers we thought, That'd be fun to put in. That was one of the great things about collaborating, you could nudge nudge, wink-wink a bit, whereas if you're sitting on your own, you might not put it in. You know, "I'd love to turn you on", we literally looked at each other like, "Oh, dare we do this?"' It was a good moment, there was always good eye contact when we put those things in. <…> PAUL: We looked through the newspaper and both wrote the verse "how many holes in Blackburn, Lancashire". I liked the way he said "Lan-ca-sheer", which is the way you pronounce it up north. Then I had this sequence that fitted, "Woke up, fell out of bed …" and we had to link them. This was the time of Tim Leary's "Turn on, tune in, drop out" and we wrote, "I'd love to turn you on." John and I gave each other a knowing look: "Uh-huh, it's a drug song. You know that, don't you?"' "Yes, but at the same time, our stuff is always very ambiguous and "turn you on" can be sexual so …c'mon!" As John and I looked at each other, a little flash went between our eyes, like "I'd love to turn you on", a recognition of what we were doing, so I thought, Okay, we've got to have something amazing that will illustrate that.
(Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles, 1997)
When John and I wrote, ‘I’d love to turn you on’, we knew it was a perfectly harmless phrase, but we also knew it would hook into the Timothy Leary crowd. There’s an impishness about it, a schoolboy thing. There are some old songs that mention it – Cole Porter’s ‘I Get a Kick Out of You’, or the song ‘Cocaine Blues’ (covered by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan) – and it’s a nod, a wink and a nod, because you’re using a perfectly ordinary word when you’re talking about a guy on a flute going ‘toot toot toot toot’ that’s what flutes do – but you’re also playing a little bit of naughtiness.
(Paul McCartney, The Lyrics, 2021)
Paul’s contribution was the beautiful little lick in the song, “I’d love to turn you on,” that he’d had floating around in his head and couldn’t use.
(John Lennon, 1980, All We Are Saying by David Sheff)

Bob Dylan "Murder Most Foul"
On November 22, 1963 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Denis Leary once joked (paraphrasing) "People call us the TV generation. We saw our president murdered on TV and were too afraid to turn it off after that". That day has been referenced in tons of pop culture over the last 60 years. Whether it was overtly addressed in Oliver Stone's brilliant paranoid drama JFK or Jackie about the First Lady in the days that followed or when it was referenced within the film like in The House of Yes or In the Line of Fire. There was the Seinfeld episode "The Boyfriend", which was spoofing the Oliver Stone movie more than actual events.
There's been countless others, but for me possibly the greatest piece of pop culture about the JFK assassination was Bob Dylan's 17 minute meditation on that day and its impact on American culture. It isn’t so much a song as it is a work of art that belongs in a museum!

The Blossom surrounded by Fire - Ch. 17 (Warrior AU- HBO MAX)
Tumblr media
I slowly sat down in the chair across from the large man. All the while, I could hear the shouting from people outside. I glanced at the window to make sure none of the trouble came close to this hellish bar.
“It’s hotter than Satan’s arse outside. Why you got that thing on?” Dylan asks suspiciously, as he takes a drink of something, alcohol I imagine. I looked at him for only a second before looking down with mild insecurity.
“I… have a deformity. I don’t want to make no one uncomfortable.” I said lightly. He tilted his head some as he observed the hood on my head. Maybe he was trying to get a look at what’s underneath.
“A deformity. That’s quite a big word.” he says taking another drink. Yes, for those who don’t know much. I didn’t reply, but I knew it wasn’t smart to remain quiet.
“I hear people use it when they look at my ears.” I said speaking to the table.
“Amaka… eyes up here.” he said firmly, and I tensed at his words, but I looked up at him, nonetheless. It was like I was some child. I looked up at his dark blue eyes. I’ve seen men with his eyes. I’ve seen them when my master would invite them over to look at his “creations”, to look at the slaves he mutilated under the sake science. “Show me.”
And I couldn’t deny him his request. So, I slowly pulled the hood off my head and his eyes flexed a bit as they moved to look at either side of my head. The man at the bar leaned forward with wide eyes.
“Sweet Jesus.” he whispered. I continued to look at Dylan with submissive eyes.
“Do others of your family have them?” he asked. I shook my head.
“No.” I replied. He just nodded slowly before looking down at the table, the expression in his eyes changing.
“So, you’re supposed to convince me to not beat O’Hara’s face in. Let’s start with that. Why do you think he was stupid enough to leave you, a colored girl, here in an Irish bar?” he asked. How the hell should I know. I stumbled over my words for a bit.
“Maybe he thought I’d be safe here. Maybe he’s friends with the owner and trusts him not to hurt me.” I said looking from the table to his face and then down again. I heard the man snort.
“That pig and I aren’t friends, the only thing we got in common is we’re Irish.” he said leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. I wasn’t surprised this was his bar. I looked around from the ceiling to the floor.
“Maybe he thought you wouldn’t see my face and immediately spit at me or try and beat me.” I replied. He squinted some.
“I may not like the lot of you, but I ain’t gonna go around beatin’ on helpess women even if they’re negresses.” he said. I looked at his chest a bit.
“What do you have against me?” I asked soft toned, to ensure he knew I wasn’t trying to insinuate anything. His eyes seemed to fill with energy at my question.
“It’s the lot of you, taking good honest work from me and my boys and their families.” he said leaning forward. “I fought to free slaves- to free you, and instead of going back to Africa, you stayed here. You came north and took our fucking jobs. And now the Chinese are coming in by the boat load. The Irishman suffers because the rich man, whose fucking war I fought, doesn’t want to pay us a fair day wage.”
I could hear the passion in his voice mixed with anger and hatred, the usual and lethal combination in whites here. I just looked down for a moment taking in his words. I’ve heard men shouting this rhetoric before in the streets, but I’ve never been this close to one before.
“Well… all I can really say is thank you for fighting for my freedom Mr. Leary. There are many in the south who do not know they are free.” I replied softly. He grunted and just shook his head.
“So now that you’re free, why didn’t you go back to Africa?” he asked. I looked up in thought for a moment before looking back at him.
“Could I go to a white captain, as a colored woman with no money, no rights or titles to anything, could I go to a captain and politely ask him to take me back to Africa a place I do not know, a land that was stripped from my identity? Would he happily oblige me, or would he laugh in my face and try and kidnap me and sell me back into slavery, where men that look like you can do this to me, because I’m only property in the eyes of those of this land?” I asked, my tone shaky, pointing to my ears. I had let it slip. I had shown that I wasn’t just some mindless negress, but one of intelligence. Dylan’s frown only grew, and I could tell on his face he wasn’t happy at how uppity I was suddenly talking. I felt the dangerous air around me grow thick. The door of the bar opened, and I immediately covered my head once more and saw that it was Officer O’Hara. Oh, thank god. I immediately got up and moved up to him.
I could hear Dylan’s large feet on the ground behind me so immediately I moved to stand behind the cop.
“I’m back. We’ll be off now. Mr. Leary, I thank you for being a good host and watching Amaka while I handled some business.” he said. Dylan looked at the man with a frown still on his sharp features.
“I expect payment for this as soon as you’re off duty, officer.” he said firmly. I just looked down and remained quiet. Officer O’Hara nodded with a heavy sigh.
“Of course. Come.” Was all he said before leaving the bar. Once outside I looked at the officer noticing he had a busted lip. I winced ignoring the glance from Dylan staring at us from the window.
“You’re hurt. I can help.” I replied, but he quickly shook his head.
“Let’s just get you back to Chinatown.” he replied. I nodded and we began our walk back. We said nothing as the sea of white faces yet again shifted yellow and I was back in Chinatown. We stopped at the steps of the brothel, and I looked at the officer nodding.
“Thank you, Officer O’Hara.” I replied before reaching into my dress pocket and pulling out a small sack of herbs. I held it up to him. “If you grind this up and put it against your mouth it’ll stop the swelling.”
The officer looked at the bag skeptically but slowly took it.
“Right, uh thank you.” he replied before just turning and heading on his way. Once he was out of sight, the doors of the brothel opened and I saw another white face, prompting me to look away toward the ground.
“You’ve returned safe and sound. Do not be shy.” I hear Ah Toy’s voice making me look up at her. She was beside the yellowed haired woman in green who looked at me taken a back, yet still smiled. I only nodded.
“Yes. The client was happy to get the medicine.” I replied to Ah Toy who nodded with a smile on her face. She looked at the woman.
“This is a kind soul of Chinatown, a woman very knowledgeable in medicine, Amaka. Amaka this is Nellie Davenport, a very strong-willed businesswoman who does charity work in helping Chinese prostitutes.” she introduced. I looked between the women now. That must be bad for Ah Toy’s business right. Nellie smiled and nodded.
“Hello Amaka, that’s a beautiful name.” she replied, her voice trailing off as I removed my hood. Her eyes widened and she gasped gently. I only smiled.
“Hello Nellie. It is nice to meet you.” I replied. In Chinatown, I didn’t feel the need to water down who I was, because I felt secure here. This woman is was in our world and here she would stand equal to me.
“Y-your ears…” she exclaimed. I nodded.
“The result of the horrors I experienced at the hand my past master when I was a slave.” I replied. Now both women looked at me as if mildly horrified. At first I wondered if I should have said that, then I remembered that’s what this country fought for, my freedom. Most coloreds here had a history of slavery. I just had to make sure no one tried to enslave me again. Nellie shook her head.
“Slavery… a horrid atrocity. No human should be owned by another. My late husband had other opinions on the subject, but thank God he is dead. I am glad you survived your past, Amaka.” she said. I couldn’t hide the skepticism at her tone, and she saw it and nodded. “I know it means nothing come from me, a woman of high privilege but in the end all men look at us and still see women who don’t know a thing about the world.”
I looked a bit intrigued by her words and Ah Toy nodded.
“Which is why it is up to us women to show them just exactly how dangerous we are so they will never underestimate us again.”
Her tone was humorous, but I could hear something deeper behind it. Nellie chuckled and I just smiled as she looked at me.
“A pleasure to meet you Amaka, I hope we can talk again.” she said. I nodded.
“Yes ma’am.” I replied and she nodded before looking at Ah Toy.
“I will be stopping by again soon.” she said, and the brothel owner nodded.
“And I will be here to greet you.” she replied. The woman left down the street and I just looked at Ah Toy. “Did you run into any trouble?”
I looked down and shook my head.
“No. Your client was thankful for the medicine.” I replied, reaching into my pockets to hand her the envelope the man had given me. She nodded taking hold of it and looking it over before looking at me.
“Good. Thank you for this. I won’t ask you to do something like this ever again.” she replied. I nodded.
“It felt nice to walk in the open without having to follow behind someone.” I said lightly before looking down and then up at her with a smile and a nod before turning from her.
“Amaka.” she called out and I turned to look at her curiously. She looked a bit saddened. “How long were you a slave?” I looked at her for a brief moment before looking up thinking of the memories of my past before looking at her.
“Since I was born.” I replied. She looked at with a light gaze before bowing her head at me. I smiled and returned it before heading back to Chao’s shop. He was putting some weapons away when he saw me.
“Hey how’d it go?” he asked approaching me. I nodded.
“Fine, all fine.” I replied and he nodded looking down with relief before looking up at me.
“I’m glad. But now we have business with the Hop Wei.” he replied. That’s right. I was to speak to Father Jun.
“Yes, we do.” I replied. After freshening up, Chao and I were walking through town until we were in familiar Hop Wei territory. Just like walking into that Irish bar, I was now walking into a tong’s house. Both places are dangerous, and I had to remember that just like Dylan Leary this Father Jun was a man like all the rest who would see me as less than if not because of my race then because of my gender. We stopped at the doors of the large building where men in red and black were standing there with pride on their faces. Chao mentioned having business with Father Jun made them pat us down. I was in a faded green dress with my head down letting them search us for weapons.
These men, I was familiar with. I’ve treated them or a member of their families that was for sure. They let us through, and we moved inside. The halls were quiet, but the rooms we passed were filled with men doing different things from talking, to drinking and eating, to sparing on large mats.
“Ah Chao, Amaka so glad of you to join us!” I heard the familiar voice of…
“Young Jun.” Chao replied, and we both bowed. Young Jun smirked at me.
“Glad to finally have you in my home. Can’t wait for you to join our tong.” he replied. Walking up behind him was Ah Sahm, and Bolo. I grinned.
“That is up to your father, but I still have to make that decision.” I replied. The young Hop Wei nodded.
“Fair enough.” he said before patting Chao’s back and moving to lead the walk down the hall. I avoided looking at Bolo and instead looked at Ah Sahm and smiled as the three of us followed.
“Ah Sahm, I am glad you are out of prison safe.” I replied. Ah Sahm smiled some.
“Thank you. I hope to never get arrested again. It’s not as fun as everyone says.” he replied. I chuckled and nodded.
“Really and here I thought it was the one place to make friends.” I said with a grin. Bolo simply stuck close to Young Jun. I guess we were both invisible to each other now. I would respect his wishes if that’s how he wanted to act when around me. We entered a large room where an elder man sat at large long table. It was polished and well decorated. Beside him on either side were other old men, but from the firm look in his one good eye, I knew he was Father Jun.

So I'm on season 2 episode 1 and may I just say I am HERE for Mai Ling being a bad bitch while Li Yong is the guard dog. Mmm bark bark I am loving this. I like how Penelope finally has some ground to stand on. She tried a lot to assert herself in season 1 but it always felt hollow. Now she is getting her father's business and I hope she pulls it off!
And idk also maybe try the boohoo dylan leary lost his wife and kids BEFORE I watched him let his men beat up the Chinese workers! They broke their hands! Quite rude in my opinion, but at least it got Ah sahm back in the game

1 – The Beatles, Revolver – EMI
I Want to Tell You”.
Tumblr media
2 - the Beach Boys, Pet Sounds – Capitol
Tumblr media
3 - Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde – Columbia
Son meilleur album rock pour certains, des ballades immortelles (“Visions of Johanna”, “Just Like a Woman”, “I Want You”) : Dylan met – encore – tout le monde d’accord !
Tumblr media
4 - The Byrds, Fifth Dimension – Columbia

5 - The Rolling Stones, Aftermath – Decca

6 - The Kinks, Face to Face – Pye Records

7 - John Mayall with Eric Clapton, Bluesbreakers – Deram

8 - Cream, Fresh Cream – Reaction/Polydor

9 - The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out! – Verve
“Mister America, try to hide the emptiness that’s you inside”.

10 - Ike & Tina Turner, River Deep-Mountain High – Philles
