The next external introduced in The Magnus Protocol should be based off of the Duolingo owl. I could definitely see that thing munching on some people's heads. You didn't do your daily lesson? Enjoy having your fear harvested and sacrificed to eldritch entities!

Is it just me or does anyone else get the irrational urge to... learn every F1 driver's native language even if I would probably never use it irl😭😂

#i looked it up and learned about habitual present tense! which is something that has a distinction in irish but not english#i wish duolingo would actually explain grammar to me bc instead i just memorize the answers without understanding#it was great practice for italian when i'd already taken a real class and knew all the grammar rules#but for starting languages from scratch it is tough! (although i think the more popular languages do have some grammar lessons)#but then i don't really use duolingo to Properly learn languages i just dabble in random new ones from time to time bc it's fun#and bc it helps me more easily BS fake-but-believable words in made-up fantasy languages for my novel haha

when did Duolingo get rid of the little section where you could read an actual grammar lesson for the unit you were on? when did they replace it with this fucking useless "here are some phrases you might see" thing? I just lost all my hearts because it won't tell me when I'm supposed to use "di fronte a" and when I'm supposed to use "davanti" and it's been five years since I've taken formal lessons so I don't remember and call me crazy but if I'm using a language learning app I feel like I shouldn't also have to have multiple tabs open for googling the lessons I should be learning
and if I'd never taken formal lessons I feel like I'd be trying to do the impossible here. Like I have a minor in Italian & was in the Italian Honor Society at my college, how fucked would I be if I was trying to learn this language in the language learning app? It's bad enough for me just trying to maintain.
AND their little hints when you click on the words aren't consistent, sometimes the top suggestion will be correct and sometimes they'll be like "nope! you should've somehow known we meant for you to use the third word down, even though there isn't a place to click for any kind of explanation or actual lesson. Vaffanculo."

I don’t get why people feel like the Duolingo owl is threatening, if I ever feel like he is I just get mad at him. I could fight an owl. I don’t know if I’d win, but I don’t think I’d lose (two things that can apparently coexist). I think I’d survive at least and that’s not really winning but also not losing.

I’m not going to pay for Babbel yet#Babbel has Icelandic lessons too I think and that is my final boss tbh#I’ve been going from easiest for English speakers to hardest as my plan#and it turns out that I forgot how much some of my issues affect learning new languages#last time I learned another language it was Spanish and I’m not fluent but I’ve had classes and been around it for so long#that i kinda forgot what it’s like to start from scratch#I didn’t start trying to learn Norwegian until I was 26#or was it my 27th birthday? I could check my streak#I was like ‘psh. it will be harder with my disabilities. but I should be able to read. my top priority with this language’#and then I realized I had been somehow adapting to the other two languages since childhood and forgot how much I had to work around#I mean. I knew I was worse at language arts in school than I was in literature and writing. but still#I also already knew I was worse at making new sentences in other languages than I was figuring out ones that someone else made#but I thought that was just because I hadn’t used Spanish much for several years now#every time I try to re-learn Spanish it just ends up with me being able to figure out what someone said to me but not how to answer#if i brushed up on it again i could probably have a conversation with someone who understood English but better spoke Spanish#someone with the same problem as me but reversed language wise#please don’t take this as me saying I could currently have an entire conversation with someone speaking Spanish#I’m better than someone who never learned it and didn’t encounter it’s use a lot. but I really don’t think I could have a real conversation#not at the moment at least#I have been meaning to brush up on Spanish again too. there are at least real classes in my area for it and not just an app#the last time there were Norwegian classes around here my dad was in college and old people still spoke it#no one around here speaks it anymore

duolingo has gotten me to be able to read swedish at. cefr b1 level. and thats it
#do NOT use duolingo to learn a new language.#ok actually i think thats not too bad considering i knew literally no swedish and also wasnt studying it anywhere else#but. you cannot rely on duolingo is what im saying.#you will reach a point where u need to learn from somewhere else#do not even fucking ask how much i can produce/speak. its even worse hdbgsdsfvgbgb#the reason the level is so specific is because i have a book that is labelled a2-b1 and shockingly. im able to read most of it#with no real difficulty. but it does take me approximately one million years longer than reading in english#which. duh. but it still pisses me off lmao
