Starting things off with counties. Most are modeled after their county seals, at least in some way. For Essex and Hampshire counties I borrowed from the arms of their namesake counties in the UK as well. While Hampden’s incorporate the azure eagle in the arms of John Hampden, for whom the county (and town) is named.

Notes:

Dukes County was officially called 'County of Dukes County' due to a quirk of the 1695 incorporation statute. It was originally part of the Province of New York and named for the Duke of York who held a grant for them in conjunction with Thomas Mayhew.

Anglo-Norman refers to names that were introduced to England during the Norman Conquest and are of either Norman or earlier Germanic roots via Norman/Old French.

Most county governments have been abolished in Massachusetts. Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes County, Norfolk, and Plymouth counties all maintain governments, and Nantucket is a consolidated citytown-county (see this for interesting commentary for the distinction). Counties continue to be used informally though.

Deferred amid virus, property taxes in towns, cities now due

Taxes have been said to be one of life’s guarantees, but that was before the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

The deadly pandemic has caused hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts residents to file for unemployment. For the week of May 17-23, a total of 37,618 filed a new unemployment claim.

Since March 15, more than 897,200 people have filed for unemployment, and overall, 518,796 people applied for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, according to the the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

Bearing that in mind, many communities have allowed residents to defer property tax payments. Here’s a look at which communities are doing that in Suffolk, Middlesex, Essex, Norfolk, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties:
