Roasted Duck by Pa Ord, 5136 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles (East Hollywood), CA 90027

Pa Ord recently opened a tiny eatery that specializes in Thai style Chinese roast duck. And if you love roast duck, it’s definitely worth a visit. Most people order the roasted duck special (the single serves one, the couple serves two), but they also have appetizers, salads, mains, and drinks. You can get duck in different ways – duck curry, stewed duck noodles, duck fried rice, spicy basil duck, etc. And they also have non-duck dishes with chicken, beef, fish, pork, and shrimp.

I’ve been eating Chinese roast duck all my life, so I’m very familiar with it, but it was my first time having Thai style Chinese roast duck. The Thai style duck features roast duck that’s bathed in a five-spice duck gravy and served with dipping sauces, duck gravy and a vinegary sweet-spicy soy sauce. One gravy tastes like it has duck drippings in it. I was surprised that they took the bones out, because a Chinese BBQ shop doesn’t debone the duck. Also, the jade noodles were different (they’re green because they’re made with spinach) but the soft texture isn’t that different from thin Chinese egg noodles. The condiments are also different (dried chili peppers and pickled jalapenos).

Roasted duck special for two ($35) with two side dishes (steamed white rice or jade noodle). I’m not sure how I feel about adding gravy to roast duck but the gravy was made with duck drippings, so it didn’t mask the duck flavor. It was on the sweeter side though and not spicy. The gravy did help flavor the plain jade noodles. Also, the jade noodles were stuck together, so the gravy helped separate the noodles. The duck was very tender and flavorful. The skin wasn’t crispy but then again, it usually isn’t crispy with a Chinese roast duck. I loved how they deboned the duck. The Chinese broccoli was nice – a bit bitter, crunchy, and fresh. I preferred the tangy sauce to the duck gravy.  

The restaurant is so small that it seats about 10 people inside and about 5 or 6 people outside. One of the employees asked if I wanted water and she meant bottled water (the only kind of water that they have). It wasn’t clear though. The shared parking lot is small.

Breakfast came from the nearby coffee shop a couple of blocks down the street. Mum bought herself the Braised Duck Porridge (卤鸭粥) with extra duck meat and no skin. She gotten me the Vegetarian Rice (斋饭) takeaway with curry mock mutton & potato, Chinese mustard greens stir-fry (芥菜) and savoury imitation pork slices.

I know I’m a little late, but I would like to say Happy Birthday to Tim Curry who, if my math is correct, turned 77 today! By an amazing coincidence, I watched 2 episodes of The Mighty Ducks (the cartoon from 1996, not the movie) today. It’s getting a little late for anything like the TV mini-series, It or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I will be watching A Christmas Carol with Tim Curry since I get to watch, not only one of his more obscure films, but one where he sings so that’s a big win.

Pho Vit 115 specializes in the cuisine of Định Quán, a rural district of Đồng Nai province in the Southeast region of Vietnam. The cuisine seems like a hybrid of Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. Pho Vit 115 specializes in duck – you can get duck salad, duck noodle soup, duck porridge, duck with rice, duck curry – but they also serve a few pork and chicken dishes.

Chao vit (duck porridge, large $15.99): In the picture, the duck is served on top of the porridge. But I was given a plate of duck pieces on a bed of shredded lettuce, cabbage, and fresh herbs, along with a ginger dipping sauce. The porridge was ginormous. It had cubes of duck blood, scallions, fried shallots, and cilantro. The skin on duck was chopped into pieces (watch out for bones). Ducks are so thin these days. The duck was so tender and flavorful. The ginger sauce seemed too sweet to me but it was also tangy. It did complement the duck. Duck blood cubes are so tender (more so than pig’s blood). The porridge was super flavorful before I even added the duck. It was one of the best bowls of porridge that I’ve ever had.

The food comes pretty quickly. There was someone ready to take my order the moment I sat down (very typical for Vietnamese restaurants) but I already knew what I wanted. Complimentary hot tea was served (and refilled).

The décor was interesting. The purple lighting gave it an upscale nightclub feel. The furniture was new. They had black & white pictures of Vietnam on one wall. It was very clean. I saw them wiping the counters and wiping all the menus while I was there.

Service was friendly. Online ordering is available from their website.
