FRIEDRICH WILHELM & VICTORIA
The Royal Wedding of a Prince of Prussia and the Princess Royal of the United Kingdom
(married 1858)
Tumblr media
pictured above is a portrait of the Princess Royal of the United Kingdom and the Prince of Prussia, printed circa 1858
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
FRIEDRICH WILHELM was the only son of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, and thus he was a member of the HOUSE OF HOHENZOLLERN. He was born a PRINCE OF PRUSSIA in 1831. And, at the time of their wedding, he was the second-in-line to the Prussian throne that was occupied by his childless uncle Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia.
Check my post on HIS LIFE!
VICTORIA ADELAIDE MARY LOUISA was the eldest child of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom, and thus she was a member of the British branch of the HOUSE OF SAXE-COBURG AND GOTHA. In 1841, her mother created her PRINCESS ROYAL OF THE UNITED KINGDOM, a title given to the eldest daughter of British Monarchs.
Her parents wished for her to marry a German Prince, but his parents diverged on the choice of future bride for their son. His father wanted a Russian Grand Duchess, but his mother was content with a British Princess.
On the occasion of the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, the Prince was sent to visit it. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert then decided to introduce their daughter as a proper suitor and asked the Princess to act as an exhibition guide to him. After which, they began to write letters to each other, even with their age gap, he was 19 years old and she was 10.
In 1855, he traveled to Britain again and asked for her hand. But it was agreed that they would wait until her 17th birthday to get married.
When their engagement was made public on 17 May 1856, he was 24, and she was 15 years old. In Britain, there was backlash from the media. While in Prussia, the news was received with mixed feelings, as many Prussians fancied a Russian union over a British one.
Queen Victoria then insisted on a British wedding, and they were married on 25 January 1858 at the Chapel Royal of St James' Palace in London. At the time of the wedding, he was 26 years old, and she had just celebrated her 17th birthday.

pictured above is a painting of the wedding ceremony of the Prince of Prussia and the Princess Royal of the United Kingdom, painted by John Phillip circa 1858-60
They lived at the Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin, and their family also used the New Palace in Potsdam as their summer residence. All of their eight children were born in these two palaces.
Check a list of their children at the end of this post!
Though in the United Kingdom, she continued to be known as the Princess Royal, in Prussia, she was officially known by the title of her husband, as PRINCESS FRIEDRICH WILHELM OF PRUSSIA.
Because of Prussian feelings against Britain, her life there was not easy, and many other things impacted her popularity. Her mother tried to influence her to keep her English ways over Prussian. Her liberal ideas did not help. And, the diplomatic relationship between Britain and Denmark, with the marriage negotiations of her brother.
His father succeeded as Wilhelm I, King of Prussia, in 1861, after the death of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The couple then became CROWN PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF PRUSSIA, at the age of 29 and 20.
Ten years later, on the creation of the German Empire in 1871, they also became GERMAN CROWN PRINCE AND PRINCESS. He was 39 years old and she was 30.
By March 1888, he succeeded his father as FRIEDRICH III, GERMAN EMPEROR, and KING OF PRUSSIA, and she became the GERMAN EMPRESS CONSORT and QUEEN CONSORT OF PRUSSIA.
Unfortunately, it was a very short reign as the new Emperor died after only 99 days on the throne, in June 1888. He was 56 years old, and she became a widow at the age of 47.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
He was succeeded by their eldest son as Emperor Wilhelm II, with whom they did not have a good relationship.
After his death, she became known as EMPRESS FRIEDRICH, partly because her mother-in-law was still alive and was known as the Empress Dowager.
Their son forced her to move out of the New Palace in Potsdam, and she began to build a new home, a castle she named Friedrichshof in honor of her late husband.
With the death of her mother-in-law in 1890, she finally took on the tile of EMPRESS DOWAGER. She was 49 years old at that time.
The Empress Dowager outlived her husband for 13 years, dying at 60 years old, in 1901, having never remarried.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
FRIEDRICH and VICTORIA had eight children.
Wilhelm II, (the last) German Emperor - husband first of Princess Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein, and second of Princess Hermine Reuss of Greiz;
Princess Charlotte of Prussia - wife of Bernhard III, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen;
Prince Heinrich of Prussia - husband of Princess Irene of Hesse and by Rhine;
Prince Sigismund of Prussia - died at age twenty-one months;
Princess Viktoria of Prussia - wife first of Prince Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe, and second of Aleksandr Zubkov;
Prince Waldemar of Prussia - died at age eleven;
Princess Sophie of Prussia - wife of Konstantínos I, King of the Hellenes; and
Princess Margarethe of Prussia - wife of Prince Friedrich Karl of Hesse.

House of Hanover & of Coburg: Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent aka Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria was born as the only child of Prince Edward, The Duke of Kent and Starthearn, and his wife Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld, the former Princess of Leiningen. Until her coronation, Victoria was called Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent. At the age of 11, she had moved from fifth in line to the throne of Great Britain to being the heir presumptive of her paternal uncle King William IV since his marriage to Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen had produced no living off-spring.
Many things can and have been said about Victoria. As this blog is dedicated to people who are either German or Austrian or have married in a house from these two nationalities, I want to focus on Victoria’s German connections.
Her mother Victoria had been married before she became The Duchess of Kent to The Prince of Leiningen. With him, she had two children: Carl, The 3rd Prince of Leiningen and Princess Feodora of Leiningen, The Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Together with Feodora, Victoria was raised by their German governess Baroness Lehzen at Kensington Palace. The sisters remained close to one another. Through this connection, Victoria was not only the mother of a German Empress but great aunt to her successor.
Victoria married her German cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Through this marriage, the end of the British Hanoverian dynasty was finally sealed. Her son Albert, who would succeed her as Edward VII, belonged to newly founded British branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, itself a cadet branch of the House of Wettin, that today calls itself the House of Windsor. Victoria’s succession had already ended the personal union with the Kingdom of Hanover, since according to Salic law women where not allowed to succeed.
Since Victoria’s mother had eight siblings, she was not only a first cousin of her husband and his brother but also for example of the first and only Empress of Mexico, King Ferdinand II of Portugal and King Leopold II of Belgium.
Her first great travel abroad led her to her husband’s home of Coburg. Here she is welcomed so fondly that from then on she called the city her second home. According to the official website of the city, she apparently also stated that if she had not been Queen of England, she would have loved to live there. After Albert’s death, she even personally came to Coburg with her children to reveal a statue that had been built in his honor. The last time, she visits Coburg is in 1894 for the marriage of her grandchildren Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Ernest Louis, The Grand Duke of Hesse. During the celebrations, her other granddaughter and Ernest Louis’ sister Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine became engaged to the Russian heir to the throne.
Except for Princess Louise, all of Victoria’s daughters married into German houses. While Vicky became German Empress, her younger sister Alice became Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. Helena and Beatrice would marry minor German princes. Victoria and Albert’s three youngest sons all married German princesses. Only Edward married the Danish princess Alexandra who actually had a German mother.
Through those marriages, Queen Victoria would soon receive the nickname of grandmother of Europe. No wonder when your 40 grandchildren include the German Emperor, the Russian Czar and his wife, the King of the United Kingdom, Queen Sophia of Greece, Queen Maud of Norway, the Grand Duke of Hesse and his wife, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Queen Marie of Romania, the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein, Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden and Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain. All these marriages were originally intended to keep the peace in Europe but in the end they could not prevent the First World War.
Queen Victoria died on January 22th, 1901, as the at the time longest reigning British monarch. She would only be surpassed by her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II 114 years later.

Queen Victoria’s Descendants (FULL LIST)
If you see any mistakes or can offer info on something like “Child 1” or an unknown birth or death year, please let me know.
Key
Bold names=Queen Victoria’s children
Strike through=deceased and I feel like I’ve gotten to the bottom of their line, and eventually, 20,000 years from now when I feel like I’m done with this list, I’ll delete it-after all, this is the list of Queen Victoria’s LIVING descendants.
* Descendants are already listed elsewhere on this list or the ones who would follow said person Ex:  Mark Nicholas van Eyck should be followed by  Princess Dorothea of Hesse but she and her descendants are also descended elsewhere. Another example is Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh’s descendants. Or the descendants of Princess Sibulla of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha (Sweden)
** I’ve seen reports that she died in 2002, but no obituary. Any ideas?
Bold and Italics together on one name denotes this person is presently the eldest and longest lived person of Queen Victoria (The Duke of Edinburgh)

On This Day In Royal History . 21 November 1840 . Princess Victoria (later Princess Royal, Queen of Prussia & Empress of Germany) was born . ◼ Princess Victoria was born at Buckingham Palace, London. She was the first child of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha & Queen Victoria. When she was born, the doctor exclaimed sadly: “Oh Madame, it’s a girl!” And the Queen replied: “Never mind, next time it will be a prince!”. . ◼ Victoria was baptised in the Throne Room of Buckingham Palace on 10 February 1841 (on her parents’ first wedding anniversary) by the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Howley. The Lily font was commissioned especially for the occasion of her christening. . ◼ Her godparents were Queen Adelaide (her great-aunt), the King of the Belgians (her great-uncle), the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (paternal grandfather, for whom the Duke of Wellington stood proxy), the Duke of Sussex (her great-uncle), the Duchess of Gloucester (her great-aunt) & the Duchess of Kent (her grandmother). . ◼ As a daughter of the sovereign, Victoria was born a British princess. On 19 January 1841, she was made Princess Royal, a title sometimes conferred on the eldest daughter of the sovereign. In addition, she was heir presumptive to the throne of the United Kingdom, before the birth of her younger brother Prince Albert Edward (later King Edward VII) on 9 November 1841. To her family, she was known simply as “Vicky”. . . . #onthisdayinhistory #Thisdayinhistory #Theyear1840 #d21nov #PrincessVictoria #PrincessRoyal #HouseofSaxeCoburgandGotha #BuckinghamPalace #EmpressofGermany #QueenofPrussia #History #Monarchy #QueenVictoria #PrinceAlbert #BritishMonarchy #Thebritishmonarchy #otd #RoyalHistory #OnThisDay 📷 Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2020 (at Buckingham Palace, London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CH3vbNhDCz7/?igshid=hjc5cumwj7fa

The Young Victoria (2009)
Biography, Drama, History |
The Young Victoria is a British period drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Julian Fellowes, based on the early life and reign of Queen Victoria, and her marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Produced by Graham King, Martin Scorsese, Sarah Ferguson, and Timothy Headington.
As screenwriter, Fellowes sought to make the film as historically accurate as possible. With this in mind, Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell and historical consultant Alastair Bruce were hired, and filming for The Young Victoria took place at various historical landmarks in England to further the film’s authenticity.
Princess Victoria of Kent is the heir presumptive to the British throne during the reign of her uncle King William IV and is subject to a political tug of war for influence over her. On one side is her mother, the Duchess of Kent, and the comptroller of the Duchess’s household, Sir John Conroy, who tries to force Victoria to sign papers declaring a regency and giving him and her mother power. On the other side is her uncle, King Leopold I of Belgium, who wishes to use his influence through family ties to secure an alliance between the United Kingdom and Belgium. He decides to have his nephew Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha seduce Victoria and he is coached in her likes and dislikes. The Duchess invites the Coburg brothers, Albert and Prince Ernest of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, to visit the household. Victoria and Albert develop an early fondness for each other, despite Victoria knowing that Albert was sent by their uncle to win her favours. They begin writing to one another after Albert returns home.
