On This Day In Royal History . 21 November 1840 . Princess Victoria (later Princess Royal, Queen of Prussia & Empress of Germany) was born . ◼ Princess Victoria was born at Buckingham Palace, London. She was the first child of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha & Queen Victoria. When she was born, the doctor exclaimed sadly: “Oh Madame, it’s a girl!” And the Queen replied: “Never mind, next time it will be a prince!”. . ◼ Victoria was baptised in the Throne Room of Buckingham Palace on 10 February 1841 (on her parents’ first wedding anniversary) by the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Howley. The Lily font was commissioned especially for the occasion of her christening. . ◼ Her godparents were Queen Adelaide (her great-aunt), the King of the Belgians (her great-uncle), the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (paternal grandfather, for whom the Duke of Wellington stood proxy), the Duke of Sussex (her great-uncle), the Duchess of Gloucester (her great-aunt) & the Duchess of Kent (her grandmother). . ◼ As a daughter of the sovereign, Victoria was born a British princess. On 19 January 1841, she was made Princess Royal, a title sometimes conferred on the eldest daughter of the sovereign. In addition, she was heir presumptive to the throne of the United Kingdom, before the birth of her younger brother Prince Albert Edward (later King Edward VII) on 9 November 1841. THE ROYAL WEDDING CAKE . 👑 Her most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria and His Royal Highness Prince Albert Married February 10th 1840 . . ◼ A hand-coloured lithograph of one of the royal wedding cakes produced for the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on 10 February 1840. Lettered below with title, publication details and a description of the cake and its decoration. . ◼ This circular cake weighed 300 pounds and had a circumference of about 3 metres. It was decorated with figures of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert dressed in ancient Greek costume, and ornamented with festoons of orange blossom and sprigs of myrtle entwined together. Queen Victoria . By Franz Xaver Winterhalter . . ◼ Queen Victoria is depicted dressed in her wedding wreath of orange blossom flowers and her wedding veil, with the small collar of the Garter. . ◼ She also wears the brooch Prince Albert gave her on their wedding day and the ear-rings and necklace made from the Turkish diamonds given to her by the Sultan Mahmúd II in 1838. . ◼ She noted in her Journal that the painting was ‘a surprise for my beloved Albert, for 10th of Feb’. It was placed in the Prince’s Dressing Room at Windsor. . ◼ Signed and dated: Fr Winterhalter. On This Day In History . 10 February 1840 . Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . ◼ Victoria arrived in a procession of carriages from Buckingham Palace. She wore a white dress of heavy silk satin, trimmed with Honiton lace. She had a white lace veil and wore a diamond necklace and earrings as well as a sapphire brooch given her by Albert and she carried a wreath of orange blossoms, a symbol of fertility. . ◼ Albert was in a British field marshal’s uniform and was escorted by a squadron of Life Guards. He entered the chapel to the strains of Handel’s ‘See, the conquering hero comes’, followed by Victoria, who was given away by her uncle the Duke of Sussex. Twelve young bridesmaids carried her train. . ◼ The wedding breakfast was held at Buckingham Palace and the wedding cake weighed 300 pounds. The newlyweds went off to Windsor Castle for a three-day honeymoon. Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . . ◼ They were married on 10 February 1840, in the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace, London. Victoria was besotted. She spent the evening after their wedding lying down with a headache, but wrote ecstatically in her diary: . "I NEVER, NEVER spent such an evening!!! MY DEAREST DEAREST DEAR Albert ... his excessive love & affection gave me feelings of heavenly love & happiness I never could have hoped to have felt before! He clasped me in his arms, & we kissed each other again & again! His beauty, his sweetness & gentleness – really how can I ever be thankful enough to have such a Husband! ... to be called by names of tenderness, I have never yet heard used to me before – was bliss beyond belief! Oh!
