On This Day In History . 12 September 1368 . Blanche of Lancaster died . ◼ Blanche of Lancaster (born. 25 March 1345/1347) was a member of the English royal House of Plantagenet, daughter of the kingdom’s wealthiest & most powerful peer, Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster. . ◼ She was the first wife of John of Gaunt, the mother of King Henry IV, & the grandmother of King Henry V of England. . ◼ Blanche died at Tutbury Castle, Staffordshire, on 12 September 1368 while her husband was overseas. She was 23 years of age at the time of her death, although Froissart reported that she died aged about 22. . ◼ It is believed that she may have died after contracting the Black Death which was rife in Europe at that time. Her funeral at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London was preceded by a magnificent cortege attended by most of the upper nobility & clergy. John of Gaunt held annual commemorations of her death for the rest of his life & established a joint chantry foundation on his own death. . ◼ In 1374, six years after her death, John of Gaunt commissioned a double tomb for himself & Blanche from the mason Henry Yevele. The magnificent monument in the choir of St Paul’s was completed by Yevele in 1380, with the assistance of Thomas Wrek, having cost a total of £592. Gaunt himself died in 1399, & was laid to rest beside Blanche. The two effigies were notable for having their right hands joined. An adjacent chantry chapel was added between 1399 & 1403 . ▪ Blanche & John of Gaunt together had seven children: . ▪ Philippa of Lancaster (31 March 1360 – 19 July 1415) . ▪ John of Lancaster (c.1362/1364); died in early infancy. . ▪ Elizabeth of Lancaster (21 February 1364 – 24 November 1426) . ▪ Edward of Lancaster (1365–1365) . ▪ John of Lancaster (4 May 1366); died in early infancy. . ▪ Henry IV of England (3 April 1367 – 20 March 1413); married firstly Mary de Bohun & secondly Joanna of Navarre. . ▪ Isabel of Lancaster (b.1368); died young. . . The Ravens . Legend maintains that - “should the ravens ever leave the Tower, the White Tower will fall & disaster will befall the kingdom” . A group of at least six captive ravens reside at the Tower of London. Their presence is traditionally believed to protect The Crown & the Tower; a superstition holds that “if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.” Some historians, including the Tower’s official historian, believe the “Tower’s raven mythology is likely to be a Victorian flight of fantasy”. The earliest known reference to captive ravens at the Tower is an illustration from 1883. . Historically, wild ravens were common throughout Britain, even in towns; the Tower was within their natural range. When they were exterminated from much of their traditional range, including London, they could only exist at the Tower in captivity & with official support. The Tower ravens are tended to by the Ravenmaster of the Yeomen Warders. Local legend puts the origin of the captive raven population at the time of King Charles II (reigned 1660–85). Some of the ravens at the Tower were specially bred in Somerset. . . . #Raven #ravens #TowerofLondon #London #Thetower #thewhitetower #Heritage #History #HistoryofEngland #historyinpictures #England #Londonhistory #Historiclondon #Riverthames #Tower #WilliamtheConqueror #towerhill #Cityoflondon #Placestovisit, #Castle #palaces #hermajesty #thequeen #Crownjewels #towerhamlets #RoyalHistory #Britishhistory #historyofbritain #VisitLondon (at Tower of London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSCyt-1MLVZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

In 2018, there were 37 Yeomen Warders & one Chief Warder. At one time, they were primarily guards but more recently, their role is primarily ceremonial; they have become greeters & guides for visitors, as part of their 21 duties. . All Yeoman Warders are retired members of the armed services; to be appointed, one must be “a former Warrant Officer, class 1 or 2, (or the equivalent rank in other services) & in exceptional circumstances, a Staff Sergeant” from the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, or Royal Marines; must have earned the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal; & must have served for 22 years in the regular armed services. Until 2009, sailors were ineligible to become Yeomen Warders. This was because sailors of the Royal Navy—unlike soldiers, marines, & airmen—swear an oath of allegiance to the Admiralty rather than the monarch personally. In 2009, sailors became eligible to join the Yeoman Warders after the Queen consented to a petition from the Governor of the Tower to allow Royal Navy senior ratings to serve. . The Yeomen Warders normally wear an “undress” uniform of dark blue with red trimmings. When the sovereign visits the Tower, or the warders are on duty at a state occasion, they wear red & gold uniforms similar to those of the Yeomen of the Guard. These uniforms are referred to by the Yeoman Warders as the Tudor State Dress. . . .

The Yeomen Warders were formed in 1485 by the new King Henry VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty; the Tudor rose, a heraldic badge of the dynasty, is part of the badge of the Yeomen Warders to this day. Founded after the Battle of Bosworth, it is the OLDEST existing military corp & the OLDEST of the royal bodyguards. . In 1509 Henry VIII moved his official residence from the Tower of London. The Tower retained the formal status of a royal palace & to mark this a party of twelve Yeomen of the Guard was left in place as a token garrison. The title of this detachment was subsequently changed to that of Tower warders as a more accurate reflection of their actual duties. As warders without any ceremonial state functions they forfeited the right to wear the scarlet royal livery of the now separate Yeoman of the Guard. This was, however, restored to them during the reign of Edward VI (1547–53), reportedly at the request of a high court official who had been briefly imprisoned in the Tower & was impressed by the behaviour of the warders. . The original Tudor guard was split into two categories: the ordinary (i.e., permanent) guard & the additional troops of the extraordinary. In 1550, for example, the ordinary mustered 105 men, with an additional 300 extraordinary yeomen. Until 1549, the guards at the Tower were numbered among the extraordinary but in that year were raised to the status of ordinary yeomen. There was a considerable wage difference between the two groups. In 1562, a yeoman of the ordinary received 16d per day, whereas an extraordinary yeoman was paid the same as a common infantryman (4d or 6d). In 1551, the ordinary was expanded to 200 men, of whom 100 were to be archers & 100 halberdiers, but these numbers were not maintained. Uniform at this time was a velvet coat trimmed with silver gilt, worn over armour. . (at Tower of London) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSCp7YQsB2e/?utm_medium=tumblr
