Dengang: 23. juni 1977, ukendt fotograf. Nu: 23. januar 2024, Jens Voigt. Samling: Bornholms Forsvarsmuseum.
As a contribution to celebrating Rønne's 650-year market town anniversary, Bornholms Regiment and Bornholms Defence Museum jointly organize a defensce exhibition. This defence exhibition had the best imaginable opening, as Her Majesty Queen Margrethe accompanied by her husband Prince Henrik, and their children Crown Prince Frederik (Frederik X) and Prince Joachim. The planner, newly appointed Colonel I.E. jersing (1917-2003), Bornholm's commander 1976-1979, is seen just to the right of the majesty, Prince Henrik just behind the colonel, and you can just make out Crown Prince Frederik to the left of Prince Henrik when they arrive at Bornholm's Defence Museum.
Then: June 23, 1977, photographer unknown. Now: 23rd. January 2024, Jens Voigt. Collection: Bornholm's Defence Museum.

Denmark has a new king
The Danish monarch changed earlier today – Queen Margrethe II abdicated and King Frederik X became the king. Unlike the English traditions around crowning a new monarch, the Danish procedure is a fairly low-key affair, in which the Danish Prime Minister declares that the former monarch has abdicated (or died, as is the usual case), long live the new monarch. I’m quite saddened by the prince consorts death and I hope that Queen Margrethe II will remain strong throughout this difficult time for her. I myself, honored the prince consort by spending time with my own grandmother and watching a tv-show which commemorates Prince Henrik’s life. Rest in peace.✞✞✞

I finally got my copy of the new book about Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s jewelry, En Dronnings Smykkeskrin by Heidi Laura, in the mail last night! I don’t speak Danish so it’s going to take me quite a while to type things into Google translate before I can read them but one thing that’s already intrigued me is this info about Princess Dagmar’s Diamond Floral Tiara which is now worn by Princess Marie. It’s in the section about gifts from Queen Margrethe to other members of the family and I think it’s saying that the tiara belongs to Princess Marie now. If you recall back in 2008, the Danish Royal Court released a statement saying that the tiara was only a long term loan. There had been some controversy about Queen Alexandrine’s Diamond Drop Tiara staying with Alexandra after her and Prince Joachim divorced so they decided Marie’s tiara would only be a loan. (Daisy put the historic Danish jewels in a foundation/trust please!) Then a few years ago there were some rumors that Margrethe had actually given the tiara to Marie for her 40th birthday but nothing was ever confirmed. The text translates to “Gift from Queen Margrethe to Princess Marie’ but for the other jewelry that has been given to Marie it also has “Belongs to H.K.H. Princess Marie” with it.
So to any Danish speakers out there, do you think this is saying that Margrethe gave the tiara to Marie or that Margrethe loaned the tiara to Marie?

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark adbicates
In Denmark, the Monarch always gives a live TV address during New Years Eve. This year, it contained a bit of breaking news: The fact that she is abdicating on January 14th, and that her son, Crown prince Frederik, will become the Monarch instead. Probably unsurprisingly to all, I am not for monarchies, even as symbolic and defanged as in Denmark, and I had hoped that we could do away with it…

This is the day. A day of joy and celebration when our oldest son is to stand in front of the altar with his bride and we are to welcome her into our house, our family, and our country.
Mary, today, the whole of Denmark welcomes you with open arms. With warmth and dignity, you have met us your new family and all your new countrymen. You instill confidence and Denmark’s gardens are flourishing with you.
Mr. Donaldson, this is a day of celebration, which we all share. No wonder if you and your family may feel a touch of apprehension, for it is also the day when your last and youngest daughter is leaving her family, as she has already left the country where she grew up to settle very far away. Now, she takes up a new and challenging life. Her new countrymen receive her with enthusiasm, not only as Crown Prince Frederik’s bride, but also for the qualities they already perceive in her.
As we have come to know her, we, her parents-in-law, have come to love and admire her. She has great inner strength and exudes a calm warmth that inspires confidence. She has shown the courage to place her future life in Denmark. May we always be worthy of her trust.
Crown Princess Mary revisits her mother-in-law’s speech at her wedding to Crown Prince Frederik [1/2]
