Sipping pints of Guinness, swapping football shirts and purring about respect and new dawns, the British and Irish prime ministers seemed determined to inject long-absent warmth into the relationship between their countries when they met on Saturday. The thaw is overdue; Keir Starmer’s visit to Dublin was the first by a British PM in five years. In 2019, Boris Johnson’s visit came amid manifold anxieties about securing a Brexit deal, prompting a declaration from the Irish government that “the people of this island, North and South, need to know that their livelihoods, their security and their sense of identity will not be put at risk as a consequence of a hard Brexit. The stakes are high. Avoiding the return of a hard border on this island and protecting our place in the single market are the Irish government’s priorities in all circumstances.”

The distrustful atmosphere was a product not just of the June 2016 British vote to leave the EU, but a broader Tory ignorance about what the border in Ireland represented. The failure to consider that issue during the Brexit referendum campaign was compounded by simplistic distortions and assertions. The border was then resurrected as a touchstone, much to its discomfort, as imagined irascibly in the Twitter feed @BorderIrish: “I was just minding my own business, being a largely invisible little border that no one had thought about for years … after decades of misery … and then along comes Brexit, like some gobshite taking its first lesson, crashing all over the place.”

Unfortunately, it was worse than that for most Irish observers, who saw Brexit as many gobshites, driving multiple cars in too many directions with no knowledge of the destination. Ireland seemed a rock of political stability, maturity and calm as the Tories imploded. A deal was eventually struck that infuriated unionists as Northern Ireland remained half in and half out of the EU.

Brexit poisoned the well of British-Irish relations. The Tories’ romantic and selective view of Britain’s imperial past led to much renewed flexing of Irish nationalist muscles, a reminder of the continuing relevance of the observation by the then British ambassador to Ireland, Alan Goodison, in 1983 that in Anglo-Irish relations there was “a raw nerve which never sleeps”.

The desire to now reset appears genuine. Starmer, with an oft-expressed fondness for Ireland, a history of involvement with Northern Ireland issues and a strong component of staff with Irish links, is well placed to reduce strains. But we should not get carried away. One message that has resonated through the years is the advice given to another British Labour prime minister, James Callaghan, who, when he was home secretary, was urged to avoid “getting sucked into the Irish bog”.

That bog might be less perilous than it once was, but it still creates wariness in Britain.

Although the fervid days of the Troubles and violence are over and power-sharing has been restored in Northern Ireland, there are ongoing concerns about the prospects of Irish unity, immigration and the legacy of the Troubles. Starmer has committed to repealing the contentious Legacy Act, introduced by the Conservatives, which closed down criminal investigations into the Troubles. But what will replace it remains unclear.

Starmer is circumspect about Irish unity. And while historically there was the British Labour slogan “Justice for Ireland”, in practice there was much detachment and hesitancy about getting embroiled in Ireland.

Starmer’s Dublin visit generated healthy promises, including a formal annual summit between the two countries, protecting and developing an estimated yearly £100bn trade and business relationship, and nurturing cooperation on energy, climate change, sport, education and culture. There was also the assertion of the importance of both governments being co-guarantors of the Good Friday agreement.

None of this should be dismissed; geography as well as history has always been central to British-Irish relations, and what is being attempted is a recognition of the scale of our entwinements. But while a dose of British humility will be welcomed in Ireland and Starmer appears genuine, the Irish appetite for adapting to shifting British currents and priorities has waned.

Brexit fundamentally altered Irish foreign policy. The Irish public have consistently been enthusiastic about EU membership. Brexit deepened that; at the height of tensions in 2019, a Eurobarometer poll suggested Ireland topped the EU table for having a positive image of the EU at 63%. Only 7% had a negative image, hardly a surprise given the solidarity with Ireland shown by its EU partners amid the Brexit fallout.

Ireland’s foreign policy anchor lies heavily in EU waters. Security, the climate crisis, migration, economic and defence issues for Ireland demand more focus on Europe. The late historian Ronan Fanning identified a constant feature of the Anglo-Irish relationship when he observed in the most fraught days: “Britain looms larger in the Irish consciousness than Ireland in the British.” That endures, but it has faded somewhat.

When Starmer speaks of a British-Irish partnership reaching “its full potential”, he is also seeing that as a route to a warmer British relationship with the EU. That potential is somewhat limited; nor is the Irish consciousness quite as consumed by Britain as it once was.

Two interactions between Snape and Shafiq- “Post War” excerpts

(Part 8- “Home”- chapter 4)

December 26th

Spinner´s End.

Virgil Shafiq was at Severus´ door first thing in the morning as Kingsley had promised. He looked rather different from how the former potions master remembered him. Shafiq was now considerably taller and somewhat thinner than he had been as a teenager but retained the same athletic frame from his quidditch days as well as the same focused, alert expression on his almond-shaped eyes. His angular face now sported a short, well trimmed beard and his hair was cut neatly, very different from the messy halo of thick curls he had growing up. Virgil had been a near model student back then except for being a tad bit too overconfident and full of himself. Severus always had to remind him to fix his uniform, to pull back his hair, so none of it fell in his potions and to never take his natural talents for granted or as an excuse to slack. Looking at him now, neat haircut, tailored three-piece suit and a position as one of the ministry´s youngest elite aurors Severus could see he had learned his lessons.

"Professor Snape." Virgil greeted him with a reverential tone, shaking his hand firmly and smiling with rows of perfectly regular white teeth.

"I haven´t been a professor for a while, Mr. Shafiq. Severus will suffice. Come in, take a seat."

"I have to say it was quite the surprise to find out you are..."

"Alive?" Severus laughed quietly "I´m afraid the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

"And I´m glad that´s the case. Well, the minister has briefed me on the situation at hand and..."

"Dare I ask how he phrased it?"

"He simply told me I´d be in charge of the safety of a close friend of yours, who happens to be a muggle..."

"Kingsley is truly a gentleman." Severus scoffed and reached for a book on the shelf showing Shafiq Evelyn´s picture back cover. "Her name is Evelyn Black."

"Do you happen to have a picture I can take with me?" the auror asked, studying the photo as if to memorise the traits of the person he was about to follow.

"Keep the book."

"Anything else I should know?" Shafiq produced a notepad and quill from his inner pocket, which started to write on their own accord as Severus begun to speak.

"In a couple hours she´ll be driving a red Volvo from Richmond 313, West Cokeworth to Liverpool. Here´s the number plate" Severus handed him a piece of paper before continuing "There she´ll get the 11am ferry to Dublin, where she´ll sleep over at a friend´s place. His name is Emmet Finnerty, better known as "Fin". I don´t know his exact address but he lives in an apartment in Blackrock, Dublin's South side with his boyfriend. The next day she´ll drive to Doolin, county Clare, on the M7 passing by Limerick and Ennis. Her sister works at Ennis Hospital so maybe she´ll meet her. She´ll be staying in her mother´s house for a little under two weeks before returning to Cokeworth. You don´t need an address for that, Doolin is a small village, you´ll probably stumble on the house without trying."

"I´ve been told she has other family members who might need attention as well?"

"Besides the mother and sister, an elderly grandmother two young nieces."

"How young?"

"Alice will be turning 7 in January and Elizabeth is three I believe."

"You have any reason to believe the children may be at some risk?"

"Let´s work under that assumption" Severus told him seriously, his mind drifting back to Fenrir Greyback. Maybe it was paranoid of him, but until they could safely locate the werewolf, he wouldn´t be taking any gambles.

(Part 8- “Home”- chapter 7) 

When he was given the assignment, Virgil didn´t think anything of her. It wasn´t part of his mission to have an opinion. All he knew was that he had to ensure the safety of a muggle who had a personal connection to Professor Snape. He waseager to prove himself worthy of his trust and that was it. Severus Snape had been one of his favourite teachers. Growing up, he looked up to him, and sought his approval. Other students often accused him of being a boot-licker, of sucking up to Snape because he was his head of house, or trying to get on his good graces so he´d be spared the Potions Master´s infamous outbursts. It was very much the opposite. Virgil actually appreciated Snape´s supposedly unsavoury attitude. 

Virgil had never tasted the bitterness of struggle as a child. He was the youngest of three boys, born to a well-off family of fairly secular muslim purebloods who  were quite liberal with their upbringing. Coming to Hogwarts in the wake of his two older brothers graduating with near perfect scores, Virgil had a metaphorical red carpet laid out in front of him. Every teacher assumed he´d excel in everything just like his brothers had, and only ever showed surprise when he didn´t perform any less than stelarly. 

Every teacher except Snape. 

The only thing Snape assumed about any student was that they´d be a failure. And it was up to them to prove him wrong. It was the first time Virgil was challenged. Snape had been a very young man then, only 21 years old and in his first year as a teacher. He hadn´t taught any of Virgil´s brothers, so he didn´t compare Virgil to anybody except Virgil himself, and with that he was never pleased, never satisfied. 'Fix your tie, Mr. Shafiq', 'watch the cauldron´s temperature, Mr. Shafiq', 'do it over, Mr. Shafiq'. Praise from other teachers was such a common occurrence it meant close to nothing to him, but Virgil could distinctively remember the first time he got a nod of approval on a potion brewed to perfection from Professor Snape and how much that had meant to him. "Well, done, Mr. Shafiq." 

Finding out Severus Snape was alive and that he had personally requested Virgil to be in charge of the safety of a personal acquaintance of his had brought Virgil back to that day, to that "Well done" he had strived for months to get, when everyone else gave him praise too easily for him to care. So, of course, he asked no questions. Shacklebolt hadn´t disclosed the nature of the relationship between Snape and the muggle he was supposed to protect. Shafiq recalled him using the term "friend" and that was the extent of it. He didn´t think much of it when Snape himself gave him information about her. Even then he still didn´t bother contemplating who exactly was this woman. He simply followed her as she moved along roads and streets and went about her life. Just a woman like any other. Maybe better looking than average, but just another person in a world populated by billions. Just an assignment. 

Something had changed when he had spoken to her. Only then did he seriously stop to contemplate what could possibly connect Professor Snape to her.

The Best Tour Companies in Ireland

Ireland. It’s a scenic country full of rolling green hills, photogenic cliffs, impressive castles, cozy Irish pub, friendly locals, and a lot of Irish charm.

I’ve loved every part of my experiences in Ireland.

My first trip was a quick 24-hour visit to Dublin, but, I loved it so much I’ve gone back about four times since. Ireland has a special magic to it that makes every visitor fall in love. (Ok, not everyone, but most people love it here!)

While the cities are incredible and have a lot to offer, Ireland is best seen by car so you can get off-road and visit the small little villages, castles, and parks that dot the country.

However, if you’re like me, and not a fan of driving (especially driving on the left!), the next best thing to driving or just city hopping on buses is going on a tour in Ireland. Given the country’s small size, you can see a lot of it in a little time and a tour can be a good way to pack it all in without the hassle of organizing all the details yourself.

There are lots of tour options here — from walking tours in Dublin to multi-day tours around all of Ireland. Here is a list of my favorite tour companies in Ireland, each of which have something unique to offer:

1. Historical Walking Tours of Dublin

The city of Dublin is such a fascinating place to explore, and it’s full of historical spots that you might just wander past if you’re not with a guide from Historical Walking Tours of Dublin. They’ve been operating tours since 1986 and one of the reasons they’re so good is their guides all have postgrad history qualifications – but also know how to lead a tour with a good Irish sense of humor.

Each walking tour is just over two hours long and they start from the front gate of Trinity College at 11am every day, with an extra tour at 3pm from May to September. They’ll take you to many of the highlights of Dublin like the House of Lords, Temple Bar, Christ Church Cathedral, and Dublin Castle and you’ll end up with a great overview of Irish history. Tickets are 14 EUR.

2. Paddywagon Tours

An Irish born-and-bred tour company that started in 1998, Paddywagon Tours offers both day tours for lots of popular tourist attractions in Ireland as well as multi-day tours ranging from two to nine days long, with accommodation choices ranging between B&Bs and hostels.

If you’re time-pressed and looking for some day trips from Dublin to quickly see a bit more of Ireland, Paddywagon has trips to places like the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, and even up to the Giant’s Causeway and other highlights of Northern Ireland. Costs range from 45 EUR to 65 EUR for these trips. They also run day trips out of other centers like Belfast, Limerick, and Cork.

Paddywagon’s multi-day tours range from 149 EUR for a two-day trip up to 689 EUR for their All Ireland nine-day tour, with backpacker accommodation (or 999 EUR if you want B&B stays). Even though you could easily spend a month in Ireland, given its relatively small size you can actually get a lot out of nine days. If you’re a student they also run some student special trips at even lower costs so keep an eye out for them.

3. Shamrocker Adventures

Shamrocker is a great option for budget travelers looking for multi-day tours of Ireland. Their approach is to try and combine the best of independent travel and group trips. That means they give you choices like different levels of accommodation and you can self-cater when it comes to food. They also have great guides who are passionate Irish storytellers — even their bus drivers have a great sense of humor!

Tours range between three and seven days, with the shorter trips focusing on just one part of Ireland — the south or the west — and costing around 300 EUR per person. Shamrocker’s seven-day trip covers all the main sights like the Giant’s Causeway, Cliffs of Moher, Galway, and Blarney Castle and is 609 EUR for adults and 589 EUR for students.

4. Wolfhound Adventure Tours

Wolfhound Adventure Tours is a boutique tour company run by Trinity College history-graduate Dave O’Connor. Tour groups have a maximum of 12 travelers and tours include some biking and hiking, which are optional but definitely a big part of the fun.

Tours range between five and ten days — the shorter tours give you an option of going to the north to the Giant’s Causeway or heading west to see the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands, both of which are 985 EUR. Wolfhound trips can include kayaking, horseriding, whale watching, and even surfing lessons and are a great choice for anyone looking to get active!

5. Vagabond Tours

Vagabond Tours is an Irish company and offers two kinds of small group tours, Driftwood Tours if you want to take it easy, and Vagabond Tours which include activities like hiking, sea kayaking, and cycling.

Tours range in length from six to eleven days, and in price from 1,550 EUR to 2,900 EUR per person. They have some of the common itineraries such as a Northern Ireland tour taking in the Giant’s Causeway and Belfast and the Giant Irish tour which circumnavigates the country, but they also have a few specialty trips like a foodie tour, an adventure trip which includes a visit to the Skellig Islands, and a tour for history buffs focusing on castles and kingdoms.

Rob Rankin, co-founder of Vagabond Tours, is a huge advocate of responsible and sustainable tourism and the leader of Ecotourism Ireland, and Vagabond Tours has been eco-tourism gold-certified since 2017.

6. Extreme Ireland

Extreme Ireland offer adventure tours around Ireland, with several Wild Atlantic Way trips available, ranging from six to 12 days long. They take small groups (a maximum of 16 travelers) led by skilled guides who have all the skills necessary to help you have a safe and adventurous tour.

Their 12-day trip will take you all over Ireland — it doesn’t just show you the regular sightseeing highlights!. The tour also includes several bike rides, a stint of stand up paddleboarding, hikes along sea cliffs and wild coastlines, kayaking, and surfing. This one comes in at 2,200 EUR while their shorter tours start at 1,100 EUR.

7. Intrepid

An Intrepid trip is always a good option — they’re my go-to multi-day tour company no matter where in the world I’m heading. With small groups (a maximum of 12 travelers for Ireland), carefully-hired local guides, and a relaxed pace, Intrepid tours really can’t be beaten. They offer just one trip in Ireland but it covers all the major sights and attractions, an eight-day adventure that spans from Belfast in Northern Ireland to Killarney in the south-west.

Their Ireland tour will take you through Dublin and Galway and includes sightseeing hotspots like the Cliffs of Moher and the Giant’s Causeway, as well a chance to explore the Aran Islands. Accommodation is in a mix of hotels and hostels, with breakfast included. The tour costs 2,300 EUR per person.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them all the time. My favorite hostels in the country are:

Generator Hostel (Dublin) – Generator is one of the best hostel chains in Europe. Their places are always clean and comfortable, though a bit generic if you’re looking for something unique.

Barnacles Quay Street (Galway) – With free breakfast, a free walking tour, and lots of fun events, this is a great hsotel for budget travelers looking to be social.

Kinlay House (Cork) – This is another social hostel that has lots of common area space, including an outdoor patio. The staff are great and the bathrooms clean (always a plus in hostels!).

Neptunes Town Hostel (Killarney) – This hostel is in a great location and the staff are super friendly and helpful!

Yes… a knotty subject – personal diaries. Knotty indeed. But, why? Because – I may have to tell you things about real life – not some of the fiction I occasionally post here in the land of OMBH!

So… why do a daily “life” diary? Indeed, why? I mean… my blog has long claimed to be daily diary of life… as witnessed by the strap-line above the blog’s banner –

Life according to one of life’s truly gifted naturally born wafflers… an open diary of a Saffer in a different land… life in the greater Dublin & Leinster area. 

So, what’s different here? Well, just days ago I got into a chat with Hester about making biltong and to do so, I have to build a biltong box! This is a project that is verrrry long in coming! I have, for years nagged that I want to make my own biltong. The stuff ain’t cheap and we have to drive quite far to get some… otherwise we have to get it delivered… and, just by the way, did I mention the stuff isn’t too cheap? OK… so, what’s the idea with the daily life diary? Well, Hester did a month’s worth of “life” diary posts so, why don’t I do so too?

OK… more later about biltong and other projects – for now, a bit of reality! I have to confess – I’ve been medically unfit for full-time work for a while. Really frustrating when it comes to the euros and cents bits of life. However, there are positives, like doing things that I’ve often had to put on the long-finger.

I’ll add a caveat – the medical condition is exacerbated by driving or even sometimes sleeping wrong – neck injuries can deteriorate and with time, so have all my spinal injuries – now combining to cause debilitating side effects, often leaving me so drained that it takes two days to feel vaguely human again. No, I’m not looking for sympathy or advice… I’m only explaining why I have to be careful in everything physical I do.

One day all will be well, I’ll do a few bits – like sawing some wood or pulling a few weeds – then, the next day I’ll try the same thing and something will click in the neck… and within a few hours I’ll be flat – left side lame and aching more than usual. OK, now you know… that’s the end of it, no further mention… apart from the fact that you should ALWAYS report work injuries in the correct fashion – yes, do so… because you never know how your body will react years later to bone bruising impacts.

So, for today, I’ll begin by showing you a photo or two of a project that set me off on a path of happy discovery and fun! I’ve been the proud owner of a mitre saw for years. It was a Christmas gift from my good lady and remained in it’s box… because I never really had place to use it – or the desire to do so! It moved from storage to storage until earlier this year, it came home – no, not to roost. So… in preparation for the South African day that passed in early May, I coxed it out of hibernation, made a rough and ready work station and fired it up… and proceeded to build frames for a few large canvasses.

OK, so… what’s the moral of the story? Maybe just nothing – but you’ll have to keep visiting as I continue this random month’s “life” diary. Yep, as Hester suggested in her intro post… there are times when one begins wondering about it all… especially after hitting the magic six-0… and all the thoughts and ideas going with that!

Just by the way… the amount of thought-hours I put into the two pieces of “art” was really not rewarded by the end result – but hey, we suffer in the name of art, don’t we? I learned many lessons about the whole process… and will one day, do it all over again – using the lessens to get better results! I trust!

An Introduction to Traditional Irish Guitar

GUEST POST – I thought I might offer a few words in this post about  a guitar genre that rarely gets the spotlight outside of its own community of players, namely that of guitar accompaniment in traditional Irish music.

Now when I say “traditional Irish music ” – or “trad” for short – I’m referring specifically to the instrumental forms of the dance music : the jigs, reels, slip-jigs, hornpipes and polkas (yes, polkas… Ireland was invaded by just about everyone at some time or other).

The roots of these tunes reach back into the ages beyond where any of us can pin point, and they offer incredible opportunities, challenges and rewards for the curious guitarist. My own journey over the last twenty years or so has been a balancing act between respecting the tradition and finding my own voice, and I wouldn’t change a minute of that learning curve.

Ok, I might change a few minutes hear and there, and for those of you who might want to dip your fingers into these waters, I thought I might offer some advice and spare you some of the bumps and bruises I acquired in my early days.

Traditional Irish Guitar Players

For reference, listening to those that came before us is always a good idea, and here are some of the names to explore:

Mícheál Ó Domhnaill made his mark through the 70s with The Bothy Band, and his strong driving rhythms along with almost a “power chord” feel at times brought a new vibrancy to the genre that led to a new and younger audience listening to the old tunes. More on Wikipedia >>

Dáithí Sproule (Pronounced “Da-Hee”, which is the Irish version of David) pioneered DADGAD guitar accompaniment in Irish music. These days, the best place to hear his accompaniment work is with ALTAN, a great Donegal band loyal to the tradition. Sproule’s Website >>

Melody Is Everything

When you sit down, guitar in hand, listening to Irish tune playing either via a musician friend or a recording, remember that it’s all about that melody line – that’s where the tradition lives. To encroach on that melody is the equivalent of drowning out the singer. It took me a minute, as someone who came from a rock/blues/jazz/punk/anything guitar background to realize I had no business vying for a piece of the spotlight. My role was a supporting one.

And after a while I realized that this “servile” role was actually the source of much liberation as a guitar player. I could go on and on about this  and expand ad infinitum, but I have some ground to cover in this one blog post, so onward….

The Forms

Many, many times have I heard the comment that trad “all sounds the same” – all diddley diddley diddley….so how hard can it be to play along with?

When you think about it, every musical genre sounds “all the same” when you only give it that initial cursory glance. Blues, Country, Jazz, Hip Hop. They can all be stereotyped and reduced to a caricature. Listen to anyone of them for more than the time it takes to change channels, however, and things start to snap into focus. Trad is no different.

A Jig

That diddley diddley diddley rhythm? That’s a jig – 6/8 and one of the basic tune forms. Listen to a tune called Out On The Ocean – a trad Standard – for the feel of a jig (or at least the feel of THAT jig – although they each have fundamental similarities, they also have their own personality, kinda like people).

A Reel

The other basic form is a reel: 4/4 , mostly eighth notes. Check out The Star of Munster as an example of a standard repertoire tune. Your road starts with those two. From there it just gets deeper and more fascinating.

Learning Traditional Irish Guitar

There are some great teachers out there – it’s something I enjoy myself – but I would like to point out some others:

So that’s some of the trad stuff, ie the instrumental tunes. What about the songs we all associate with Irish music ? The “Pub songs” as they’re often called.

Pub Songs

Every time I think on the subject, I’m reminded of my days singing for my supper in Dublin, and my old friend Martin Denning singing  to the tune of Simon and Garfunkel’s The Boxer:

“I am just a folky and my story seldom told I have plundered Irish music with a lump of German plywood and a capo All lies and jest, I have learned the songs with just two chords and disregard the rest. Li la li li. Li la li li. Li la li”

I love a lot of those Irish ballads and spent plenty of my early career belting them out to all and sundry. I regard a lot of those songs as the Irish equivalent of Classic Rock, in much the same way as I regard The Dubliners as the Irish Rolling Stones. If you want to familiarize yourself with the standards of the Irish Pub Song/Ballad genre, go get a collection of recordings by the Dubliners circa 60s/70s, with the never-to be-equalled Luke Kelly on vocal. Great stuff.

The songs, as opposed to the tunes, allow an audience to sing along and perhaps interact more with the music. So therefore they lend themselves to a party atmosphere.

Beneath that layer though, are a wealth of songs dating back to antiquity – a vein that is still being mined, but since this is  a guitar blog, that’s a story for.another time and place.

Bottom line is…

….if you’ve never considered turning your guitar’s attention to the twists and turns of Irish music, a world of discovery awaits, you lucky dog….

My friend was in an accident on a dirt road last night. He hit a rock sticking out of the ground that popped his tire, and the front right side of his car slide into a mountain. So the front fender, and right door is smashed pretty well. He has full coverage car insurance, and can not talk to them personally about what is covered, because they are closed until Monday. He left a voicemail with the insurance company when the accident happened. Money is tight so he is very worried about what, if not all, will be covered. Tadhg Beirne said he has ‘definitely become a better player’ in his two years at the Scarlets

When Tadhg Beirne leaves the Scarlets for his homeland this summer it will be a bittersweet moment for both player and club.

The 26-year-old second row will trade Llanelli for Limerick after signing a two year deal with Munster, but there is the small matter of defending a league title first.

It is back home where the Kildare native hopes to impress Ireland manager Joe Schmidt and win his first senior international cap, something many would argue is well overdue.

Beirne graduated through the Leinster Academy, but could only muster a handful of brief appearances from the bench for the senior side.

He took to delivering pizza to support himself and such was his frustration he even contemplated leaving the game altogether to focus on his university degree.

Career kick start

Beirne was released by the Irish province at the end of the 2015-16 season, a time when Leinster’s talent pool was rich and he had suffered with injuries.

Luckily for Scarlets, head coach Wayne Pivac had a versatile lock on his summer shopping list.

The New Zealander saw a rough diamond in footage of Beirne, and over the past two seasons helped mould him into one of Europe’s finest forwards.

Although Beirne admitted to finding Llanelli something of a culture shock, the move across the Irish sea proved to be career defining.

He made his debut against Munster and went on to play a pivotal role in Scarlets’ Pro12 championship winning season.

Revenge for Beirne could not have come much sweeter when they lined up against his former side in Dublin for the semi-final.

Despite going into the match as underdogs, they romped to victory to set up the final with Munster at the Aviva Stadium.

Beirne scored one of the Welsh regions’ five tries as they secured their first league title since 2004.

Beirne’s second season with the Scarlets saw him transfer his league form onto the European stage.

His monumental work rate and prowess over the ball played a crucial role in the Scarlets progressing to the European Champions Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2007.

Arguably his most impressive performance came against Bath when his 6ft 6in frame side-stepped England full-back Anthony Watson to finish off a team try at the Recreation Ground.

Such displays led to him being nominated as European Player of the Year in January.

Scarlets saw off La Rochelle in style to set up a semi-final against Leinster in Dublin, but this time it was the Irish province who gave a lesson in rugby. Beirne did however score a consolation try for Scarlets.

His final home game was the Pro14 quarter-final victory over Cheetahs.

‘Incredible journey’

He was given a rapturous standing ovation as he left the field at Parc y Scarlets, a send off he described as “incredibly touching”.

“It was one of those moments that you try and savour and I probably walked off a little bit slower just to take it all in because the support I’ve received over here from the fans has been phenomenal,” Beirne said.

“It’s pretty special and a little bit sad too because it’s my last game here.

“The fans are something special, I haven’t come across it before. When you play here it can be deafening at times.

“It’s been an incredible journey for me and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it, and I’m going to be sad to leave.

“I’ve learned a lot about myself, learned so much about rugby and I think I’ve definitely become a better player since I came here, and that’s a credit to the coaches, all the staff and especially the boys I get to play alongside every game.

“It’s been a pleasure and I’m definitely going to miss it.”

Opportunity for revenge

Scarlets travel to the Scotstoun Stadium on Friday to take on Glasgow in the Pro14 semi-final, and should they progress will meet either Leinster or Munster in Dublin on 26 May.

“We played Glasgow here but it’s a different story when you play against teams in their own backyard with their own fans,” said Beirne.

“We have a massive record here and we’re very proud of that, and they’ll be pretty proud of getting to play in their backyard, but we did it against Leinster last year so there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.

“Obviously for us after that semi-final in Europe, to get through Glasgow and have another crack at Leinster potentially gives us that little bit of extra drive.

International ambitions

Beirne was offered a contract extension by the Scarlets, but his decision to turn it down and return to Ireland was influenced by his burning desire for international honours.

He featured in all of Ireland’s games during the 2012 Under-20 Six Nations and Junior World Championship, but has yet to win a senior cap, partly due to playing outside of Ireland.

“Ireland’s always in the back of my mind, that’s why I’ve had to leave this place,” he said.

The 2018 Six Nations Grand Slam champions tour Australia next month in the first ever three-Test series played between the teams.

“If I get on the tour I’d still be regarded as a Scarlets player which I take quite a bit of pride in because my contract here doesn’t end until the end of June,” Beirne said.

“But if I don’t, there will be plenty of more opportunities when I do go back home and they won’t be able to use that excuse anymore, they’ll just have to tell me I’m not good enough.”

Adventure to Ireland

Ireland is a beautiful  country with deep history, gorgeous landscapes, and charming people. I journeyed there with my husband who was touring the country with his band- so I’d love to get back to explore more but I’m thrilled we fit in some amazing sights on our relatively busy stay. 

We started in Dublin and our taxi driver at the airport was unabashedly talkative, free with his expletives in the most glorious way, and blasting U2 on the stereo. Our first introduction to the Irish people stayed somewhat consistent (minus the expletives)- they’re funny, honest, and love giving tourists directions and tips. (It’s dawning on me that my heritage is starting to make a wee bit of sense actually). Part of the magic of the journey to Ireland is engaging with the people. I’m relatively shy at times, but I loved engaging with the Irish. The people of Ireland are distinctive and love to tell a good tale. 

We rented a car to get around quickly from town to town. Outside of Dublin this was a smart move, but driving in Dublin was pretty stressful- the signage is different with lots of narrow one-way streets that added to the classic driving-on-the-opposite-side anxiety. It’s not the place you want to “warm up” into this style of driving. I recommend sticking to a taxi if you can while in town and then use the car for the countryside. Driving on the opposite side is a challenge. Give yourself plenty of time to get around and try to mentally prepare beforehand. 

Dublin itself is worth visiting, but I also found it a place I didn’t need to spend too much time. My favorite stop was popping into Trinity College to see the Long Room in the Old Library and the Book of Kells. I loved it for the history lesson and the architecture. Within walking distance of the college, you’ll find a busy shopping and restaurant district near Drury Lane. I encourage wandering that direction for a bite and a pint. Afterward, venture to the nearby lovely St. Stephen’s Green. It’s a picturesque Victorian park that Dubliners use quite a bit. We visited on a sunny Summer day and people were picnicking and lounging on the lawn amidst the sculptures and waterbirds. 

I encourage you to get outside of Dublin quickly because Ireland is full of natural wonders.The country features world-famous sights like the Cliffs of Moher, Giant’s Causeway, and the Ring of Kerry. Ireland is pretty far north, so even in the Summer I felt a chill in the air and we had rainy days. Bring layers and your umbrella. 

If you’re headed to Galway, Dingle, and destinations to the west, stop halfway in the heart of Ireland at Athlone. It’s a special spot to me because my ancestors had a farm there- but you’ll find a quaint town on the River Shannon with deep history, a castle on the water, and the oldest bar on record.  Sean’s Bar dates back to 900 AD when Vikings raided the Irish shores. Athlone is also the location where King  Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill acknowledged the great Brian Boru as the High King of Ireland. The castle is the site of the great Siege of Athlone, known as the heaviest bombardment in Irish history spanning ten days with 12,000 cannonballs and 600 bombs. 

If Southern Ireland is your destination outside of Dublin, drive through Cashel. A lovely town with the iconic Rock of Cashel castle. It’s open for touring during the day and has deep history featuring the famous St. Patrick.  It’s also a mighty gorgeous place to be at sunset.

I recommend journeying to the port town of Cobh in the south and staying there a couple days. If you’re an American with Irish roots, your ancestors went through Cobh. The Heritage Center in the town shares the history of the Irish immigration story and allows you to trace your ancestors. It was also the last stop for both the Lusitania and Titanic before their ill-fated treks. There’s a museum for the Titanic as well for those fascinated with that history. The town itself has great food, a large and picturesque cathedral, and is situated attractively on the waterfront. I highly recommend staying at the Elmville bed and breakfast. Olive is a superb hostess and runs a lovely place. She also serves a delicious Irish breakfast. My husband specifically wanted me to share that Cobh has a great open-late (past 11pm) Chinese food restaurant called Hong Kong Kitchen.

Within an easy drive of Cobh is the town of Cork which is fun to head to in the evening. It’s a bit inland of the coast and features a bustling downtown with pubs and music. We enjoyed dining at the Electric Fish Bar. Also nearby is the famous Blarney Castle. It’s known as a tourist trap, but if you’re a fan of castles, it’s a famous one- although kissing the Blarney Stone isn’t exactly up my alley personally. You may want to wash the germs down with a bit of whiskey.

Spend another day venturing to Kinsale, otherwise known as the “Gourmet capital” of Ireland. The vibe feels like if California wine country and a quaint Irish village had a baby, you’d get Kinsale. The town highlights great shops  and stellar eateries like Fishy Fishy (tough name but trust me, unless you don’t like fish of course).  It has a historic port on the River Brandon and was also an important location in the military history of the region.

From there, if you have the time and ambition, I’d head two hours to the Ring of Kerry, Killarney, and then Dingle. I’m sad to have missed this part of the country and do aim to return. I also lament missing Northern Ireland and all that has to offer as well- but you take the journeys you can. There’s a natural circle starting in Dublin then taking the roads to the south, then west, and then back to where you started if you have time to truly explore.

As the Irish say, “May the road rise up to meet you” on your adventure to Ireland... at the very least, may you not have trouble driving on the opposite side of the road as well, for what it’s worth. Say hello to the little people and the faeries if you happen to see any for me. I hope the luck of the Irish rubs off on you in your adventure to the Emerald Isle. Sláinte!

Guelph Little Theatre

176 Morris Street

In 1935, the first Little Theatre opened at Guelph City Hall. A fire in 1993 forced it from its 26-year home in the Salvation Army Hall on Dublin Street. In 1997, it moved into a former welding shop. The space holds a 288-seat raked auditorium, large raised stage, gracious lobby, rehearsal hall, workshop, dressing rooms, and storage areas. The tour will take visitors to the stage set for its current production. Family-friendly activities include a costume photo booth, prop-making demonstration, and sneak peeks at a rehearsal and performance.

Church House in the Ward

44 Short Street

In 1899, Knox Presbyterian Church established a Sabbath School Mission in the Ward. In 1909, St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was constructed as a modest Edwardian building with Gothic windows and an impressive Douglas Fir ceiling. In 2002, the church was sold and renovated over five years into a spectacular residence. It is also the home of Sage Solutions, a strategy and facilitation company.

Churches of St. Matthias and St. James the Apostle

Built in 1891-92 in Gothic style, St. James is the newest of Guelph’s stone churches, the last built with local limestone. The church was downsized from its original traditional plan resulting in an unusual orientation. The nave was eliminated leaving the north transept as the nave. The original fine wood ceiling and elaborate vaulting remained in the building’s final form.

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church

161 Norfolk St.

The original Church was built in the market grounds in 1832, but was demolished to make room for Guelph’s City Hall. The new Gothic Revival church built in 1856 was designed by William Hay of Toronto. The open timberwork ceiling and fine stained glass windows memorialize church leaders and a plaque pays tribute to John McCrae who attended the church in his youth. The south-side addition is built of stone salvaged from Guelph’s demolished Opera House.

The Forsyth-Hepburn Home was constructed in 1910 of red brick in Georgian Revival style as a residence for nurses working at Guelph General Hospital. It served that purpose until the late 1950s. Vesterra Property Management acquired it in 2013 and renovated it retaining all original exterior wood trim, bay windows, front porch with Tuscan columns, and the interior staircase.

Guelph Orange Hall

The Loyal Orange Association of British America has had a continuous presence in the City of Guelph since 1837, having a total of seven different Loyal Orange Lodges and three Ladies Orange Benevolent Associations. Prince Arthur L.O.L. 1331 was first established in Guelph in 1871, but moved into its present building in the late 1940s. Displays will demonstrate various aspects of its history and community involvement.

The New Petrie

15 Wyndham Street

The New Petrie incorporates the remaining pieces of the former Western Hotel built on the site in 1847. Partly destroyed by a fire in 1854, the Petrie could be one of the oldest buildings left on Wyndham Street North. Its back wall and portions of the former stables are preserved in the offices of Hunch Manifest and The Robbie Group. Designed in 1882 by Guelph architect John Day, the building opened as a pharmacy for Alexander Bain Petrie with a unique stamped metal facade and iconic mortar and pestle. Since 2015, it has been restored for several new businesses.

Mr. Petrie wanted the tallest building on Wyndham Street, so he topped it with an empty shell that remained unused for 136 years until it was restored as an elegant showroom and stunning event space for The Modern Bride. Twenty-foot ceilings and eleven-foot windows looking on the Basilica create a beautiful backdrop for the wedding dresses. The Modern Bride is a carefully curated, appointment-only bridal boutique that offers a unique shopping experience for the contemporary bride.

Hospice Wellington

795 Scottsdale Drive

Founded in 1980, Hospice provides care and support to families facing a life-threatening illness. The former Kortright Presbyterian Church was built in 1983. In 2010, David McCauley, architect of the original church, redesigned the building with ten palliative residences in the upper level and community support programs in the lower level. The design includes a living wall, solar panels and rainwater collection system to support the pollination garden on the grounds. Visitors will experience collaborative art and family activities.

42 Carden Street

Seed Warehouse was a two-storey stone structure built in the 1860s which later became Massey-Ferguson Farm Supply. Between 1924 and 1934, Ackers Furniture moved in, added the top two floors and remained until 2016. In 1955, a fire caused a huge safe to fall through the first floor to the basement where it remains today. Together with the Chalmers Community Service Centre, the building is now a thriving collaborative workspace and community hub.

Community Living Guelph-Wellington

8 Royal Road

CLGW uses social inclusion and community engagement to support adults with developmental disabilities to live, work and connect in their community.  Founded in 1955 by parents of intellectually-disabled children, it provides service to over 400 people and their families.   The present building opened in 2007 with services like life skills and computer training, physiotherapy and music therapy with access to ARC industries, kitchen and gymnasium.

Trails Open – Speedvale Trail Underpass

Often in the news last year, the City's upcoming trail underpass will complete a safe and scenic link above the riverbank between the TransCanada Trail, Riverside Park, and the Evergreen Seniors Centre. 15-20 minute hikes will be run throughout the day by the Guelph Hiking Trail Club. Parking off Riverview Drive, behind the Speedvale Ave. E. firehall.

This year Guelph Arts Council is pleased to announce a collaboration with Guelph Museum’s Doors Open After Dark, the Museum’s second annual history-at-night party. After a day exploring Guelph’s hidden gems, Doors Open visitors are encouraged to save some energy to celebrate Guelph’s 191st birthday with pop-up art and history installations at and around the museum.
