Everyone who knows me knows I'm not really a fan of morality tales, particularly really obvious ones. But I also believe in exceptions to every rule, and perhaps the exception to this one is in the occasional traditional fairytale or folktale, particularly for the holidays, when we're already focused on traditions and passing on our cultural values. And I have to say, I fell so deeply in love with Durga Yael Bernhard's absolutely GORGEOUS illustrations for "The Dreidel That Wouldn't Spin: A Toyshop Tale of Hanukkah" (2014), by Martha Seif Simpson, that I couldn't NOT share it. The story itself really is quite sweet, if a bit predictable for adults, centering on an exquisite, handmade dreidel (the traditional spinning top played with at Chanukah) in a toy store, which simply won't work for greedy, spoiled children (I think we can guess who it WILL spin for...). But it really is enjoyable, and as I said, the artwork is beautiful. Dreidel 154/365 Designer: Unknown Paper: 5”x5” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreidel A dreidel or dreidl (/ˈdreɪdəl/ DRAY-dəl; Yiddish: דרײדל‎, romanized: dreydl, plural: dreydlekh;[a] Hebrew: סביבון‎, romanized: sevivon) is a four-sided spinning top, played during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet: �� (nun), ג (gimel), ה (hei), ש (shin). These letters are translated in Yiddish to a mnemonic for the rules of a gambling game played with a dreidel: Nun stands for the Yiddish word nisht ("nothing"), Gimel for gants ("all"), Hei for halb ("half"), and Shin for shtel ayn ("put in"). However, they represent the Hebrew phrase nes gadol hayah sham ("a great miracle happened there"), referring to the Miracle of the cruse of oil. For this reason, most dreidels in Israel replace the letter Shin with a letter פ (pe), to represent the phrase nes gadol hayah poh ("a great miracle happened here"),[1]; however, many Haredi communities insist that the letter Shin should be used in the Holy Land as well, because the reference to "there" means in the Holy Temple and not in the Land.
