Everyone who knows me knows I'm not really a fan of morality tales, particularly really obvious ones. But I also believe in exceptions to every rule, and perhaps the exception to this one is in the occasional traditional fairytale or folktale, particularly for the holidays, when we're already focused on traditions and passing on our cultural values. And I have to say, I fell so deeply in love with Durga Yael Bernhard's absolutely GORGEOUS illustrations for "The Dreidel That Wouldn't Spin: A Toyshop Tale of Hanukkah" (2014), by Martha Seif Simpson, that I couldn't NOT share it. The story itself really is quite sweet, if a bit predictable for adults, centering on an exquisite, handmade dreidel (the traditional spinning top played with at Chanukah) in a toy store, which simply won't work for greedy, spoiled children (I think we can guess who it WILL spin for...). But it really is enjoyable, and as I said, the artwork is beautiful.
