One of my favourite memories of holiday stories as a child is of listening to traditional folktales from what I'd call "the olden days" with their simple but heartwarming narratives and happy endings. "A Chanukah With Mazel" (2016) by Joel Edward Stein, illustrated by Elisa Vavouri, brings those old folktales to mind. Mazel is a cat that the poor artist Misha finds in his barn at Chanukah and grows attached to, sharing with her what little he has in the spirit of the holiday. Far from simply being "the Jewish equivalent of Christmas", Chanukah is an incredibly beautiful, historically meaningful holiday with its own rich traditions. In the next few weeks I'd like to share some of the many wonderful books about MY holiday that I've enjoyed over the years. One of my favourite books recounting the history of this holiday celebrating religious freedom and courage is "Maccabee!: The Story of Hanukkah" (2010) by Tilda Balsley, illustrated by David Harrington, and told in a wonderful rhyming text that's great for reading aloud. At this time of year we're always inundated with beautiful Christmas books. And while I enjoy them very much, they tend to make me realize how little many people know about the holiday that I and other Jewish people celebrate at this time of year - Chanukah.
