Hmm doll dyeing adventure #3 did not go nearly so well as 1 and 2 :/
Attempted to dye Vanora's head, and while the dye took ok on the ears when i was testing colors and time, it got a little blotchy on the headcap (spots of glue maybe?) and took very unevenly on the head itself. Like..one eyewell took the dye darker than the other, which i might think would be dye pooling there, except i had the head on a string and was moving it in the dye bath, so it wouldn't have had time enough to pool enough for that. The back of the neck barely took, same with the forehead, plus there's a weird mark at the top of the forehead where i'm assuming something with the glue holding the magnet in (which fell out at one point) interacted with the resin, because the headcap did the same thing. It took evenly inside the head, which is odd. (The first one is after dyeing and rinsing, which is why it's wet, and the others are a few hours later)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I scrubbed her down before i started dyeing, so there shouldn't have been any oils or mold release left on it. But i guess I'll have to try to wipe it, clean her REALLY well and try again. And maybe up the concentration for the dye bath some too next time, so I can use shorter dunk times. Since it didn't turn out well, I might go ahead and buy some kentucky sky (this was a combination of tropical teal and sapphire blue) since that looks like on its own it's a warmer toned blue a little closer to the marker color I use when drawing her, though i think it's also quite light. But of course i can't find good swatches of it to be sure. I don't need this to be darker per se, i just need it to be even.
it's funny because I've seen people say Loongsoul resin dyes badly, but I had hardly any issues with it the couple times i dyed dollbei jun (and those i did have were on me and i know what i did). But this dreamvalley resin...damn

Hi I’m new to the bjd community but I already admire your work! I’m looking for a trustworthy website to purchase off of. Do you have any suggestions? I’m looking for a dragon like bjd, also I’ve seen a lot on Aliexpress but is that a decent place ot order off of or do you recommend any specific sellers? I’ve also seen you have some beautiful dragons, I’m sorry if this come off rude if they’re not for sale but do you have you are selling? If so what are the prices? Thank you!
Hey there and welcome to the hobby! <3
There are a ton of links coming, so the questions first. For one, Aliexpress and Ebay are horrible sources to get BJDs, because 99,9% of dolls there are bootlegs, also known as recasts. They're basically illegally made copies of original dolls. While in the past recasters tried to pass their dolls as 'the real deal' from the company (just extremely cheap), nowadays, they're giving the dolls new names and are selling them under their own 'company name'. Don't be fooled. They're still copies. There are a few very good BJD facebook groups, like BJD Addict or BJD Lovers, where you could ask for help to identify a recast listing.
A more in depth text why recasters are a problem can be found here.
If you're looking for dragons specifically, Dreamvalley is releasing dragons once in a while and for events (like 2 to 3 times a year). You can get them via any of the dealers I've linked below.
Most of the dragons I own are made by Cuartodolls who is (was?) a russian doll artist that went completely silent in 2022. Her page got shut down. Even before the whole Ukraine War, she was hard to get ahold off... I'm currently only consider selling my Cuartodolls Ketar, but he originally was 1500$, so he's not really suited to be starter doll :,D
Trustworthy places to buy BJDs are:
And basically any company you can find here:

Xiao Xingchen joins the team (even though like my Xue Yang, he has basically almost nothing to do with the canon character but hey, modern aus are like that) (I mean he is still blind, and he's still fighting for justice but as a disability activist, so close enough for me). He's a resinsoul Mai head on a dreamvalley 50cm body.
I wanted to do a photoshoot with him and Sophia like they were models because they're both ridiculously long-limbed, but I was really tired last weekend and most photos ended up being pretty disappointing. Those three are the only ones I didn't hate

When I was 11 or 12 I started getting into collecting the original 80s My Little Pony (which introduced me to Sailor Moon through the internet). The major source of information on the toys, which ones came from which set and which ones came from which countries was a site called Dreamvalley.net (this was YEARS before Wikipedia). Dreamvalley was part of a webring that connected to various other personal websites where people posted about their collections as well as art, RP groups and other things. Naturally some of these sites hosted their own fanfiction (my favourite site I still think about fondly was an entire website written like a choose your own adventure but without an actual plot. You wander around the MLP castle grounds and various buildings just talking to characters and you could walk where you like. It was actually really well done)
I even got one MLP fanfic website to host my very first fanfic (which wasn't very good because I was 11 or 12 lol) which felt like a MAJOR thing for me at the time.
A year or so later, Pokemon started becoming very big and I got sucked into the Team Rocket fanfics people wrote. Following personal websites eventually led me to various Fanfiction dedicated sites in a more general sense, and then eventually to FF.net
Poll Tuesday
I feel like I’m exposing myself a little bit with this bc my introduction to fic is soo random I think, but whatever your answer please tell me the story! I wanna know haha

#Modding day! I love the #Spiritdoll Fantasy body, but it bothers me a bit that Mag looks shorter when sitting next to Frei. So I modelled and 3D-printed an additional joint to boost up the torso length. Worked pretty well I think, and it has the added bonus of fixing her arm-to-torso proportions!

Heya! You seem like the main authority on bjd I know of, so I figured you might be the person to ask...
Does anyone in the community have any good resources for making/sculpting your own doll? I've had a specific dragon in my mind for years now, but (dragons not being popular for some reason and the main makers having all but vanished), there aren't many places to look. None of the offered models were quite what I wanted, either—mine wasn't a feral dragon, quite, but not as on the humanoid side as most dragon anthros are. So I figured I'd try making one, though I have little idea where to start on that. I know a bit of 3d modeling, but not actual sculpting with my hands, so is casting off a good printed model a thing? Are there any resources for what kind of joints would be needed, especially when working with a non-human doll like a dragon tail or wings? She's been a beloved oc for years now, so I wanted her doll to BE her and not a repaint of anything else, but usually my work sticks to digital media so I'm a little lost porting her to a physical object, lol
Anyway, hope you have an awesome day! Your collection of dolls is gorgeous and I love the work you've done on the customs you've shared here
Hey there! these are a lot of questions, lets see where to start... First off - don't (ever) let the hobby intimidate you into not doing what you want to do. Making your own doll is a huge task with a steep learning curve, especially when it comes to joints. As for resources in general, I unfortunately don't have any links at hand. There's the BJD Sculptors group on facebook, and I know that there are a few videos on youtube from doll people on how to make joints in blender and similar programs.
Casting from a 3D print is a thing, yes! You'll have to print, sand and prime the doll beforehand though, or go through a caster who does that for you (like FantasyDoll!). If you plan to make the doll only for yourself though, I wouldn't bother with casting; 3D printed dolls are a thing, as Frapzilla proved (or Eve the cat studio, or Elleodolls..).
There is no 'you need this joint' guide on 4-(or more) legged dolls. Most, if not all joints are basically a sphere in a concave space; it really depends on the design and the kind of movement you want that determines the final shape. Maybe take a look at Dreamvalleys Dragons?
I absolutely recommend sketching out the full doll first to get a feel for proportions before diving into sculpting/jointing. Otherwise you'll have to adjust things later on, and while that's not that annoying in 3D, it's an absolute pain with real sculpting... speaking from experience here x.x I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
