Who'll Stop the Rain
Vecna was defeated as far as they could tell, and while the town was in bad shape, Eddie and Steve were able to explore what was happening between them. They’d realised it amidst all the drama, but when Eddie had barely made it out alive from the Upside Down, they’d spent more time together, especially alone, and Steve had told Eddie everything that had happened before Vecna. About the Demogorgons, the Mind-Flayer, the Russians… everything. Even the things he hadn’t told anyone - not even Robin.
The nightmares always kept Steve awake or woke him in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat so that he had to take a shower, but even that normally didn’t help him. What had helped him was being in a room with Eddie, knowing that he was there and that he was safe. He even told Eddie about the problems he had with his hearing. Due to all the trauma he’d suffered through, being beaten up not just once, but three times by now, he’d lost pretty much all of his hearing in one ear. He told Eddie about the torture he’d endured from the Russians, showed him all the faded scars on his body that bore witness to what he’d suffered through.
They’d grown closer, but hadn’t talked about what this was between them. They’d held hands, but hadn’t kissed yet. They didn’t need to speak about it to know what the other one was feeling, they could see it in the other’s eyes, but they were taking it slowly. Steve had gotten his heart broken while Eddie found it hard to trust people, but with Steve, it was becoming easier and easier for him.
“Demogorgon,” Dustin said breathlessly one day as he came through the door, staring at both Eddie and Steve. “At the junkyard. I just saw it!”
“You’re shitting me!” Steve looked at Dustin in disbelief, feeling his hands tighten to fists. This seemed all too familiar, because that was where they’d tried to fight Dart, the Demogorgon Dustin had more or less raised, and then they’d been in for a surprise.
“No… I saw just one and ran as fast as I could.”
“Do the others know?” Steve asked, getting up from where he was sitting. Here he’d thought they’d have some quiet weeks, because they deserved it, but that was apparently out of the question.
“No, I came here straight away.”“Good, don’t tell them. I’ll take care of this.” Like he always did, because he needed that, needed to protect his friends, his family because he couldn’t lose any one of them. They’d nearly lost Max and Eddie, but they were alright now. He had to keep them out of harm’s way.
“You’re not gonna do this alone,” Eddie stood up as well, taking Steve’s hand in his. Steve had feared that Eddie would say this.
“Exactly,” Dustin chimed in. “We’re in this together.”
“Alright.” Steve knew that he didn’t stand a chance against them, that they would follow him no matter what. Only if he locked them up somewhere would they let him leave alone, but he couldn’t do that. He considered it for a moment, though. “But you’re gonna listen to what I say. No questions asked, you just follow my rules. Am I making myself clear?”
“Uhh bossy,” Eddie chuckled, trying to lift the mood a little, but it didn’t work.
“Yes, Munson, and I will whip your ass if you do not listen to me!” As much as he wanted to keep this lighthearted, this wasn’t the right situation. He needed them to listen, to follow. “I’m not risking losing any of you again. I nearly lost you once.” His voice quivered for a moment, showing the emotion that he was pushing away, because if he thought about that now, about Eddie’s bloody body in his arms, he wouldn’t go out there. No, he would wrap his arms around Eddie, get in his car with him and drive wherever, just far away from Hawkins.
“Alright…” Eddie agreed, not wanting to cause Steve more pain than he already had, and they started making their plan. Eddie was following Dustin and Steve, because they were the ones with the experience. They’d lured the Demogorgon in before, and they knew what they had to do better now.
They got everything they needed and prepared the junkyard. They set traps, they laid out the meat. Steve took care of the gasoline, kept the lighters - in case one wasn’t working - in his pocket. Maybe, they should have talked to Hop, but Steve just wanted to get this over with, burn that thing to the ground and then get back home. He was so tired of all this shit, but he couldn’t turn a blind eye.
Once they were finished, they waited and listened. It took about an hour until Steve heard it, the screeches that followed him into his nightmares.
“When I say run-” He turned towards Dustin and Eddie “-I need you to do as I say, and don’t even think about me.”
“You’re not being serious!” Eddie gasped at him, shaking his head. “No. Nope! Not gonna happen!”
“You agreed! I told you that I was making the rules and both of you agreed!”
“This is bullshit!” Dustin piqued up.
“I’m serious! There is no shame in running.” His eyes locked with Eddie’s as he used Eddie’s words. “Sometimes, it’s the best thing we can do, and I need you both to do this… For me!”
The pleading look he levelled at both of them made Eddie groan. He couldn’t deny him that, and neither could Dustin.
“Okay,” Eddie said, swallowing past the lump in his throat. He knew how dangerous it was and he wanted to stay by Steve’s side, but he couldn’t.
When the noises got closer and Steve got a good look at the Demogorgon, he turned towards Dustin and Eddie. “Run! NOW!”
While they turned around to start running, Steve jumped up from where they had been hiding.
“HEY! You ugly ass monster! Come and get some fresh meat!” He waved at the thing to get its attention and started running towards the bus. He wanted it to get inside before he lit the fire so that there was no escape, he just had to jump to the side at the right moment. He got in position when he heard it.
Dustin’s screams followed by Eddie’s, calling for help. He’d told them to run, and he’d sent them right to their doom.
—
“Steve… Stevie… Hey open your eyes!”
Eddie was sitting on the bed next to Steve, hovering over his shaking body. Another nightmare, but this time worse than he’d ever experienced it. Steve’s whole body was convulsing, his hands clenched to fists, and he was having trouble breathing.
“You’re safe! Nobody will hurt you! Listen to my voice!”
Eddie pushed Steve’s sweaty hair from his forehead, pressed his cool hand to the heated skin. With his other hand, he rubbed Steve’s chest, starting to panic, because the other wasn’t calming down at all.
“Baby please!” Eddie pleaded, fighting back the tears when Steve’s eyes opened all of a sudden. The shaking didn’t stop, but it wasn’t as violent anymore.
“I can’t,” Steve tried to force out, but couldn’t finish the sentence. The pressure on his chest was too much, making it harder and harder for him to breathe, panic gripping him tight as he tried his best to focus on something.
“I’ve got you! You hear me?” Eddie leaned back over Steve again, his dark curls cascading down, tickling Steve’s cheeks. Somehow, it was calming, because it proved that Eddie was there. Still, there was not enough air filling his lungs.
“Look at me, Stevie. Look at me!” Eddie’s warm hands were now on his cheeks, thumbs brushing over them, before he slowly moved them down to Steve’s chest. “Breathe with me, follow my lead. In… and out…” He took a deep breath, then slowly let it out. Steve’s eyes were fixed on Eddie and he tried, his breathing slowly growing even, not so ragged anymore, until he was really breathing together with Eddie. In and out… in and out. He felt the tension leaving his body, his hands unclenching and lying flat by his sides now. His chest rose and fell in a steady manner now.
“Good… you’re doing so good, baby!” Eddie smiled down at him, rubbing his hands soothingly over Steve’s chest, feeling him relax beneath his touch. Steve closed his eyes for a moment to take another deep breath, putting his hands slowly on top of Eddie’s. “You doing better now?”
“Mhm…” Steve answered before he looked back up again at Eddie. “I just…” He shook his head, heaving a sigh.
“A nightmare I know. But it’s never been this bad before.”
“No…” Steve sat up, a forlorn look on his face that made Eddie pull him into his arms, holding him close to show him that he was there. Steve sighed in contentment, closing his eyes to fully revel in the feeling. “But it was so vivid,” he whispered against the crook of Eddie’s neck. “You and Dustin… I thought I’d lost you. I put you in danger and then…”
Eddie felt the tears against his neck, felt Steve’s body start to shake again, and he simply held him like this for a moment, his hands rubbing Steve’s back in a soothing manner, showing him that he was there.
“But I’m here,” he whispered into Steve’s hair, before he pressed a kiss against the crown of his head. His fingers grazed over the back of Steve’s neck before they settled at the back of his head, massaging his scalp.
“I know… but at that moment…”
“It wasn’t real, Stevie… You’ve saved my life and I am here because of you.”
Steve pulled back slightly to look at Eddie, whose hand came up immediately to cup Steve’s cheek, brush the tears away with his thumb.
“You’re not getting rid of me that easily.” Eddie tilted his head to the side, before he leaned down to brush his lips over Steve’s let them linger there for a moment, but not too long. When he pulled back again, he couldn’t help but smile. “‘Cause I’ve grown quite fond of you, big boy.”
“Good…” Steve managed to answer, the tears subsiding, the pain and fear now replaced with a smile that grew and grew. “Because I wouldn't let you go anyway.” Steve pulled Eddie back to kiss him once again, this time slow and sensual, more than just a brush of their lips. It was sweet, just what they both needed, what they’d both worked towards for weeks.
“You think you can get some more sleep? You really need it.” Eddie leaned his forehead against Steve’s, his hair smoothing down Steve’s hair and stopped at the nape of his neck.
“Maybe… Just… not alone.”
“As if I’d let you sleep alone now.” Eddie bumped his nose against Steve’s before he pulled back. He lay down next to Steve, opening his arms for him. “C’mere, babe!”
And he did. Steve cuddled close to Eddie, burying his head again in the crook of Eddie’s neck, and closed his eyes. It didn’t take him long to fall asleep in the arms of the person he trusted the most. The person he wanted to protect. The person he loved.
