Pokemon Card of the Day #2979: Drampa (Dragon Majesty)
Tumblr media
Drampa was here to do one thing, and it was to accelerate Energy. While Dragon didn't exactly have the best acceleration, Drampa's version of it was pretty weak. The reason anyone gave it a look was for that early boost of Energy that, if done a couple of times, could help out a GX a bit on a Pokemon that only gave up that single Prize and didn't mess up the Prize math too much. That was at least something.
120 HP wasn't bad at all for a Basic Pokemon. It had a chance to survive early hits with it, but something like a Zoroark-GX that got set up enough could just KO it on turn 2 so it wasn't the most reliable thing out there. Anything with better Energy acceleration had a chance to do the same. The Fairy Weakness could matter a bit against Alolan Ninetales-GX, which showed up occasionally in the SUM-On format. The Retreat Cost was just 1, so once Drampa had done its job it could retreat easily if it had somehow survived.
Drampa's role was to use Dragon Wisdom. The 20 damage for a Colorless Energy was not the reason, though a little chip damage on your Energy acceleration wasn't bad. The attack also had you attach a basic Energy card from your discard pile to 1 of your Dragon-type Pokemon. You had to use this twice for it to really be worthwhile most of the time, as you were attaching your first Energy to Drampa instead of the other Pokemon the first turn so you really just came out even. If you did get this off twice, you could get a bit of a boost overall, which wasn't 100% reliable since 120 HP wasn't amazing but it happened sometimes.
Hyper Voice was just 80 damage for 3 Colorless Energy and really not worth it.
Drampa, honestly, wasn't very good. It would occasionally get you ahead by a single Energy, but there were enough decks with strong acceleration for other types that Dragon wasn't going to keep up with the unreliable Drampa. This probably would have worked in some older, less explosive formats, but it was just too late by this point and Drampa was best left out of decks.

I have this little idea rattling around in my head, I had to get it down so it wouldn't leave me. It's a little story where it's like Pokemon Horizons (sorta), but the crew is made of mostly Fallers, traveling around doing odd jobs for the new world they call home. I'm calling it Pokemon Sky Trekkers (it's a working title). Here's some of the characters I've been kicking around in my head:
Hanji Zoe (Attack on Titan)- Leader of the group, landed in the Lental region, lived there for at least a year. Pokemon- Ditto, Golurk
Dogday (Poppy Playtime)- Vice Leader (of sorts), also landed in Lental not long after Hanji did. Pokemon- Drampa
Hazel (One Piece OC, an elderly ram Mink)- Shipright/Engineer, landed in Johto and lived there for seven years. Pokemon- Ampharos (with Mega Stone)
Aoi (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex)- There computer expert (mostly because a good chunk of the crew are from more primitive worlds and he's the closest to an expert they have) Also landed in Johto, was there for two years. Pokemon- Porygon2, Sunflora, Zoroark
Dog, Donkey, Cat and Rooster (The Grimm Variations episode 5 "The Town Musicians of Bremen")- They fill a lot of roles for the crew, Dog and Donkey are the cooks, while Dog also sometimes acts as a back up captain and Donkey helps with Hazel with maintaining the ship, Rooster doesn't have a set role but has claimed the lookout tower (no, the irony is not lost on her) and Cat... well extra hands always help right? Pokemon- (Dog) Lucario, Dusk Mane Lycanroc, Armorouge (Donkey) Mudsdale, Zebstrika, Machamp (Cat) Delcatty, Purugly, Aromatisse (Rooster) Blaziken, Pidgeot, Mimikyu
Quinn (Owl House OC, a genderfluid biped demon, mainly using Beastkeeping, Potion, Bard and Healing magic, has an opossum palisman named Scraps)- the groups magic expert/ doctor. Landed in Unova, lived there for 4 months Pokemon- Serperior, Swoobat, Watchog, Seismitoad (Shiny)
Jim "Crocodile" Cook (Yugioh GX)- Acts as another researcher for the crew, landed in Galar, was there for 3 months. Pokemon- Krookodile (It's his pet crocodile Shirley, turned into a Pokemon), Relicanth, Gigalith, Tyrantrum
Axel Brodie (Yugioh GX)- Acts as another muscle, alongside Donkey, lander in Galar, along with Jim. Pokemon- Torkoal, Magmortar, Alolan Marowak, Camerupt.
Anderson - the only PokeEarth native on the crew, a member of the Diamond Clan, he joined the crew mainly as his clan duty duty to keep an eye out on Fallers (especially so many in one place) Pokemon- Buizel, Hisuian Lilligant, Raichu, Azumarill, Garchomp, Glalie.
June (From a regular world in the 2010s, where Pokemon isn't a thing)- At only 7 years old, she's one of the youngest Fallers in recorded history. Landed in Sinnoh, lived with Anderson for 5 months, and clings to him like glue. Pokemon- Yanma (Shiny)
Travis and Cody (From a regular world in 1998, where Pokemon was just starting out)- as previously stated, he's from a world like ours, but he's not the one with meta-knowledge, it's his 8 year old son Cody. Joined the crew as a trainer with a full team Landed in Kanto, lived there for over a year. Pokemon- (Travis) Blastoise, Fearow, Bellosom, Sandslash, Flareon, Electivire (Cody) Axew
Ika (Legend of Zelda BotW/ TotK OC, a child Rito)- Quinn's honorary little sister, landed in Unova and lived there for 3 months. Pokemon- Castform
Oscar (From an Old West esque world, still debating if it's the same world as the Bremen ladies)- a bounty hunter who was eebydeebied into the Pokemon world as a Seviper. Landed in Hoenn but was constantly wandering Poke- Japan for 3 years . He's essentially Rattlesnake Jake from Rango, minus the gattling gun tail and us slightly more moral (emphasis on slightly)
Gammamon (Digimon, not the same one from Ghost Game btw)- Pretty much the baby of the crew, found by Jim and Axel in Galar
Shuichi Saihara, Maki Harukawa and Himiko Yumeno (Danganronpa V3)- The most recent members of the crew, joined for their new found wanderlust after being trapped from the Killing Game, landed in Kanto (specifically in Indigo Academy from Horizons, the Headmistress took them in for bit evn though they weren't official students, even gave them there Starters) Pokemon- (Shuichi) Decidueye, Stoutland, Male Meowstic, Umbreon, Altaria, Flapple (Maki) Inteleon, Crobat, Weavile, Leavanny, Clefable, Scizor (Himiko) Delphox, Yellow flower Florges, Mr. Mime, Luxray, Smeargle, Mienshao
There is actually one more member of the crew, if you wanna find out who it is or wanna see more headcanons of this little plot bunny let me know! I really wanna share!

So I did an analysis of my “Catch ‘Em All” Pokemon Card Binder...
...in order to determine what cards I had and what cards I needed. The point of the “Catch ‘Em All” binder is to have at least 1 of every single Pokemon there is - not to complete sets or hunt holos or “ex”s or “EX”s or “GX”s or full arts or whatever. I just one one of all 893* Pokemon. (*there are 893 pokemon as of this writing.)
The thing is, I want the “original sets” for generations 1-3. That is to say, I don’t need ALL of EVERY set from gens 1-3, but I want the cards to be of the original sets. So for generation 1** that is: Base, Base 2, Fossil, and Jungle. For generation 2** that is: Neo Destiny, Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, and Neo Revelations. For generation 3 that is the four sets in the e-series, and the 17 sets in the ex ruby and sapphire series.
(**I am also collecting the WoTC Black Star promos from gen 1, the Rocket set from gen 1, and the Southern Islands set from gen 2. These are in my collections binder, however, not my Catch ‘Em All binder. I will likely go on to collect the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets after finishing Team Rocket and Southern Islands...WoTC Black Star Promos will take a while).
For generation 4 and onwards, there are WAY too many sets to be that specific.
Under the cut is my list/analysis of the cards that I need to complete my Catch ‘Em All binder. If you have any of the cards below and are willing to trade/sell for reasonable prices - usually 10-20% of TCGPlayer for more common cards or ebay recently sold for rarer cards...according to the reddit and forums I trade on - please, hit me up!
I already have all of the cards I need from generations 1 and 2. That is, one of each pokemon. And I actually have all of generation 1 fossil and jungle cards, plus a mixture of base and base 2. For generation 2, I don’t have all the cards from every set, and will probably pick up a few more here and there as I see them, but I’m no actively seeking. But I have every pokemon. INCLUDING THE STUPID UNOWN R THAT WAS ONLY A JAPANESE PROMO AND NEVER PRINTED LIKE THE OTHER UNOWNS.
So the actual list begins with generation 3. The “*” cards are ones I don’t have at all. The ones without “*” I have some version of, just not a version from a set that I want. So without further ado:

I’m honestly not sure that there are cards for ALL of the gen8 pokemon yet...probably not Kubfu and Urshifu, and almost certainly not Zarude.
In addition to the cards I need above, I also have a “Collections” binder - which is for all those  “ex”s or “EX”s or “GX”s or full arts or rainbow rares or anything that is really cool. It also includes card series, such as those listed above (and some others!) as well as my Pikachu, Meowth, Eevee, Vulpix, Ninetales, and Umbreon card collections, as well as a third binder that is a reverse holo binder, where I put all the reverse holos I have (as long as I have a different one, either a second reverse holo or a non-holo, in my Catch ‘Em All binder).
I’m usually pretty willing to trade reverse holos, and there are definitely some cards in my collections binder that I am willing to trade as well.
You can view what I’m offering for trade HERE and HERE.
If you want to trade, let me know!

Preparing for the Limitless Qualifier #3 UPR-RCL
In a world where there are no officially sanctioned major tournaments, those of us playing in the Limitless Qualifiers are the pioneers of this new format. There are no results to base our testing on, no one knows what to expect. The only facts that we have are what was good last format and what cards are in this new set. From there, where should we go with our testing to maximize our results?
As with all things Pokemon, there is immense value to be taken from Tord Reklev. In an interview with OmniPoke, Tord said that he prefers to pick a single deck and test it extensively within the new format and refine the list as you test. The most crucial bit of all that is the testing. In order to produce that refined list, you must play the deck a lot. In preparation for NAIC 2017, Tord lived and breathed Drampa Garbodor and then went on to win the event. If possible, do that. To that end, I’ve selected ADP Zacian for the Rebel Clash format to test and it’s been...odd.
Tumblr media
Above is my first draft list for the deck! Super consistent, mostly 4-ofs, 0 tech cards. The deck was very good, but there are some issues here. 4 Marnie feels really good, but the high supporter counts clunk up opening hands and end up making the deck kind of...meh? I registered this 60 in a bunch of online standard tourneys and after way too many rounds with the deck, some of which you can find in my Twitch vods here, I tweaked the list and it became the version you see below.
Tumblr media
(bottom row is 8 metals and 2 waters)
At present, I think this list can beat anything. Provided you have a reasonable start and can get off Altered Creation GX quickly. I think in some matchups, going second, there will be a strong argument for using ADP’s GX attack with only one energy. You will need a flexible strategy against the more aggressive matchups, the format is faster now and this deck isn’t.
You have to play this deck thinking at least three turns ahead, so all I can really advise is caution and thoughtful play.
Thanks for reading!

Pokemon Card of the Day Schedule: Dragon Majesty
Dragon Majesty was a mini-set that focused a lot of Dragon-type Pokemon, in which Dragon-type included Pokemon that were sometimes other types in their cards in the set. It also had some that they've pushed as like dragons, such as Charizard (understandable) and Feraligatr (it learns Dragon Claw, I guess). Some extra Fire- and Water-types that didn't exactly fit the theme were in here too, so the set was mostly a 3 type set plus a few Colorless to round it out.
The set was more of a collector's set in theory, and there wasn't a lot of depth for players. Still, Victini Prism Star was a cool tech in Blacephalon decks, Quagsire saw some play with Naganadel, and Turtonator could work as a big hitter for Fire decks that could survive discarding a huge amount of Energy. Fiery Flint was the big Trainer in the set, also focusing toward Fire-types. In a competitive sense, Dragon Majesty was more of a set to help Fire-types more than Dragon-types, and it did that, though a lot of the rest of the set was of the almost good but just barely short variety.
Charizard Blaziken Victini Prism Star Reshiram-GX Kingdra-GX Feraligatr Quagsire Corsola Wishiwashi Dragonite-GX Altaria Altaria-GX Salamence-GX White Kyurem-GX Turtonator Drampa Blaine's Last Stand Dragon Talon Fiery Flint Lance Prism Star Zinnia
