Pokemon Card of the Day #2483: Kommo-o-GX (Guardians Rising)
Tumblr media
Kommo-O-GX was a typical Dragon-type in that it needed multiple kinds of Energy to use most of its attacks. The Pokemon did need some help due to this, and it helped that there was an Energy in the PRC-On format that Kommo-o-GX could use for a couple of months. After that, it was a bit uglier, and some interesting deck building would be required to access what was otherwise a decent attacker.
Kommo-o-GX didn’t lack HP. 240 was quite good, as was needed for a Stage 2 Pokemon-GX. Yes, it was just barely in range of the relatively common attacks sitting around 120 or 130, meaning it was only taking 1 of those. The Fairy Weakness was notable in the PRC-On format where Kommo-o-GX was most likely to succeed, with Gardevoir-GX being the biggest problem. Kommo-o also needed 2 Energy to retreat, with Trainers to get around that being nice to have if deck building allowed it.
Adamantine Press was rather weak, though 30 damage wasn’t surprising for just a Colorless Energy. During your opponent’s next turn, Kommo-o-GX also took 30 less damage from attacks after Weakness and Resistance, which could matter in some spots with opponents sometimes just barely reaching the needed damage to KO here. The popularity of Choice Band to help keep at those numbers really hurt this attack’s chances, however, as did the low damage output. This was rarely a player’s best option in a turn.
Shred did need a lot of Energy. A Lightning, a Fighting, and 2 Colorless Energy made it quite awkward. It was most accessible in the PRC-On format, as Double Dragon Energy was still legal there. Later formats would require some sort of acceleration and some awkward deck building, such as a pairing with Vikavolt or Pikachu & Zekrom-GX as well as Rainbow or Fighting Energy to cover that extra requirement. The award was 130 damage that wasn’t affected by anything on the opponent’s Active Pokemon. 130 was certainly enough to make some good progress, with the goal to take out most important Pokemon in 2 turns. It was hard to ignore that there were other Pokemon, such as Drampa-GX, who could do the same with 3 Energy and didn’t need to force specific Energy types to do so.
The GX attack also needed that awkward amount of Energy, but gave 240 damage. Kommo-o-GX had that one-time big attack to take out whatever you might need it to, as long as you actually got the Energy onto it to do that. This may have been the one thing that this card had over potential competition: the possibility of a massive attack to wipe out even very bulky Pokemon.
Kommo-o-GX was all right, as having that GX attack in the back on a Pokemon that could deal some solid damage normally was a nice combination. And then you got to the problems, which was that it needed a lot of Energy, even with Double Dragon Energy available for the first few months, and that Shred was pretty strong but not as amazing as you might hope for out of an expensive attack. Kommo-o-GX wasn’t seen in any big tournaments as a result, as the previously successful decks with other Dragon-types had also fallen off by the time this card was released. It was probably best to keep Kommo-o-GX in your collection.

So I did an analysis of my “Catch ‘Em All” Pokemon Card Binder...
...in order to determine what cards I had and what cards I needed. The point of the “Catch ‘Em All” binder is to have at least 1 of every single Pokemon there is - not to complete sets or hunt holos or “ex”s or “EX”s or “GX”s or full arts or whatever. I just one one of all 893* Pokemon. (*there are 893 pokemon as of this writing.)
The thing is, I want the “original sets” for generations 1-3. That is to say, I don’t need ALL of EVERY set from gens 1-3, but I want the cards to be of the original sets. So for generation 1** that is: Base, Base 2, Fossil, and Jungle. For generation 2** that is: Neo Destiny, Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, and Neo Revelations. For generation 3 that is the four sets in the e-series, and the 17 sets in the ex ruby and sapphire series.
(**I am also collecting the WoTC Black Star promos from gen 1, the Rocket set from gen 1, and the Southern Islands set from gen 2. These are in my collections binder, however, not my Catch ‘Em All binder. I will likely go on to collect the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets after finishing Team Rocket and Southern Islands...WoTC Black Star Promos will take a while).
For generation 4 and onwards, there are WAY too many sets to be that specific.
Under the cut is my list/analysis of the cards that I need to complete my Catch ‘Em All binder. If you have any of the cards below and are willing to trade/sell for reasonable prices - usually 10-20% of TCGPlayer for more common cards or ebay recently sold for rarer cards...according to the reddit and forums I trade on - please, hit me up!
I already have all of the cards I need from generations 1 and 2. That is, one of each pokemon. And I actually have all of generation 1 fossil and jungle cards, plus a mixture of base and base 2. For generation 2, I don’t have all the cards from every set, and will probably pick up a few more here and there as I see them, but I’m no actively seeking. But I have every pokemon. INCLUDING THE STUPID UNOWN R THAT WAS ONLY A JAPANESE PROMO AND NEVER PRINTED LIKE THE OTHER UNOWNS.
So the actual list begins with generation 3. The “*” cards are ones I don’t have at all. The ones without “*” I have some version of, just not a version from a set that I want. So without further ado:

I’m honestly not sure that there are cards for ALL of the gen8 pokemon yet...probably not Kubfu and Urshifu, and almost certainly not Zarude.
In addition to the cards I need above, I also have a “Collections” binder - which is for all those  “ex”s or “EX”s or “GX”s or full arts or rainbow rares or anything that is really cool. It also includes card series, such as those listed above (and some others!) as well as my Pikachu, Meowth, Eevee, Vulpix, Ninetales, and Umbreon card collections, as well as a third binder that is a reverse holo binder, where I put all the reverse holos I have (as long as I have a different one, either a second reverse holo or a non-holo, in my Catch ‘Em All binder).
I’m usually pretty willing to trade reverse holos, and there are definitely some cards in my collections binder that I am willing to trade as well.
You can view what I’m offering for trade HERE and HERE.
If you want to trade, let me know!

Pokemon Card of the Day #2651: Kommo-o (Crimson Invasion)
Tumblr media
Kommo-o had the potential to be pretty strong. 120 damage, as seen on Zoroark-GX, was impressive for a Double Colorless Energy. Kommo-o was a bit harder to get into play and its requirement to hit that hard was less reliable, but it only gave up 1 Prize instead of 2. While Zoroark-GX also had a great Ability to work with, a single Prize attacker might be useful to some decks if built a certain way.
160 HP was pretty good, though expected on a Stage 2. Most of the attacks that would KO from full were in the SUM-On format where Tag Teams got involved, but Rayquaza-GX could certainly get there too. The Fairy Weakness was most notable at the end of Kommo-o’s run against Sylveon & Gardevoir-GX, a Pokemon that would otherwise be just 10 damage short of getting a Prize. The Retreat Cost, at 2, was high enough that help might be worth having if possible, mostly in the case that it couldn’t use War Cry efficiently anymore.
War Cry was the big reason to use Kommo-o. The base was weak at just 30 damage for 2 Colorless Energy. The value was that 90 more was added if you had fewer Pokemon in play than your opponent. This was heavily match-up reliant. It was great against something like Zoroark-GX, a Pokemon that needed a full Bench to be really good. The problem was that there were plenty of Pokemon that helped when being played to the Bench, and you couldn’t use those too often against some decks. Decks that ran a low amount of Pokemon, such as those based around Reshiram & Charizard-GX, also tended to deal with War Cry easily. It was more of a match-up play than other cheap attackers, but also one that was pretty good when it worked.
Clanging Scales was more reliable damage, and 130 was pretty solid at taking things out in 2 hits. There were two problems, however. Needing a Lightning, a Fighting, and a Colorless Energy was extremely awkward, needing Rainbow Energy or multiple Energy types to work. The other issue was that attacks done to Kommo-o during the opponent’s next turn did 30 more damage. 160 HP with 10 from Rainbow Energy and 30 from Clanging Scales made the HP functionally more like 120. 120 was a common number at the time and opened up all sorts of KO opportunities.
Kommo-o was a Pokemon that seemed to be so close to getting it all together but couldn’t quite reach where it needed to go. It’s really hard to want to use Kommo-o when it was harder to get its good attack going, and giving up 1 fewer Prize than Zoroark-GX just wasn’t enough to get it over the edge. If playing seriously in these formats and thinking about Kommo-o, just use Zoroark-GX instead.
