ROUND 1B, MATCH 7 OUT OF 16!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Darkstalker:
ā€¢ A dragon who has mindreading powers, future sight and a magical that can let him enchant whoever and whatever he wants. Heā€™s also a iconic and well-written manipulative villain within the series. Heā€™s been enchanted to be unconscious and asleep for 2,000 years by a enchanted bracelet until he woke up from it snapping from a earthquake.
This fool sleeps for 2000 years and the first thing he does when he wakes up is cause problems. Good for him.
Evil dragon with extraordinarily powerful magic who made himself immortal and invulnerable, so his best friend and girlfriend were forced to stop him by putting him into a magical deep sleep under a mountain forever. But then 2000 years later an earthquake breaks the enchantment and he wakes up to begin his second reign of terror...
He's the best because he's actually the worst. Started out as a pretty nice guy with insane magical powers and then became a genocidal maniac with a god complex so his girlfriend had to betray him with a magic bracelet that put him to sleep under a mountain, where he stayed for like a thousand years until an earthquake broke the bracelet and he awoke to cause problems again only to be defeated via magic strawberry. Also he mind controlled his shitty dad into disemboweling himself
Arokh:
He's a dragon who fell into a stone sleep for 600 years after the death of his previous bonded rider.

Drakan: Order of the Flame! A lost game from my childhood! I last played this 23 years ago.
Is it a good game? Hell no. Am I having fun? Surprisingly, yes!
I'm not grinding XP for skill points, I'm not saving up gold to do mercantile busywork in town, I'm not being given a compass marker ever, the cinematics are well spaced, I'm only occasionally told where to go and sometimes you can get lost or stuck for a while. I can find powerful items in secret places and nobody tells me what they do because I can just save the game whenever, try them out and reload.
The game is purely about finding items and progressing through an expansive linear level that has many side passages. It's refreshing, I miss it.
At the start of the game I jumped off from the village into the coast and found a very powerful (5 times more damage than my starting weapon) but nearly broken axe, which I've been using very sparingly to dispatch some high DPS enemies.
The combat barely has anything to it. You just hit enemies, try to abuse positioning so they can't hit you and you whack on them. You can get a lucky dismemberment early on and they can't use their weapon anymore!
You get a dragon pretty early on!! The flying feels fun and you obliterate everything in the overworld (at least early on?). I'm sure it will quickly get boring.
The story is worse than Conan (1982) and 50% less campy. But it stays out of your way largely.
The game is mediocre but frictionless and has a certain aspect of Just Letting Me Fucking Play.
I recently finished Resident Evil 3 and it is the polar opposite. It is also mediocre, but is never content with just letting you fucking play it. Sometimes you can't go for two minutes without a cinematic! It constantly railroads you, you're just playing an unlikable B-movie.

there's something genuinely heartwarming about searching the name of an old pc game, curious to see if anybody remembers it, and finding someone's sans undertale au set in that game.

Scans of some pages discussing the game Drakan: The Order of Flame, also released in 1999, as well as an ultimately, (and unfortunately!), canceled game by Blue Fang Games, 'Dragon Hoard'.
The way Ken Brown describes it reminds me a lot of the eventual 2001 game by Lionheart, Black and White, which is one we greatly enjoy.
(I also kind of wish we got the second Rynn model..)

Drakan: Order of the Flame
Tumblr media
We had this game as a demo when I was a kid. I have no idea what part of the game was included in the demo, but I know that I liked the whole dragon riding thing and thought that Rynn was really cool. I also enjoyed that you could call the dragon while standing right next to him and heā€™d give you a snide comment about laziness, that was pretty funny.
So now that I did some research about this to try and remind myself what parts felt familiar, I happened to come upon the scene where Rynn and Arokh meet the succubi. And I just - ahem - really liked that. I mean, cheesecake that doesnā€™t take itself way too seriously? I like that! So I wanted to just draw the scene where the succubi work their magic and Rynnā€™s all likeĀ ā€œIā€™m too straight for thisā€. And yes, apparently the sky really is some kind of beige in that scene. Weird, I know.

DRAKAN: ORDER OF THE FLAME
The Order was no more, but the Dark Unionā€™s dreams of conquest had been shattered. With the fall of Navaros, the Dark Unionā€™s hold on its monstrous armies collapsed. Chaos spread across the land. Mankind banded once more into many tribes and kingdoms, and the great achievements of the Order of the Flame were forgotten. The dragons, weary at last of the world of men, withdrew into timeless slumber, never again to return. The age without kings had ended. And of that brief golden era, only the legends remain.
