born  on  the  rocking  lull  of  a  houseboat  with  too  many  layers,  too  many  floors  built  upon  itself  from  too  many  generations  before;  carnelian  is  the  middle  child  of  the  st.  germains,  smack  dab  in  the  middle.  a  family  of  fishermen  and  superstitions,  carnelian  knows  mostly  of  the  ocean,  of  the  night  sky  that  hovers  above  it  and  whose  stars  reflect  against  the  waves,  twinkling  bright  and  shiny.  grows  up  on  early  mornings  at  sea,  before  the  sun  dares  to  rise  against  the  horizon  -  on  the  scent  of  seawater  and  zinc,  of  dead  fish  hauled  back  to  shore.

the  houseboat  that  never  strays  from  the  docks,  unlike  their  family's  fisher  vessel,  rocks  with  the  constant  movement  of  a  bustling  family  who  rarely  rests.  constant  visits  into  town;  the  children  to  school,  their  father  to  the  fishing  market,  their  mother  to  the  smallest  cottage  in  town,  shrouded  by  overgrown  hedge  and  towering  tree.  a  place  of  healing,  of  fortunes  told  and  spirits  settled.  they're  all  raised  on  it  -  on  spirituality,  of  being  in  tune  with  not  only  yourself,  but  the  world  around  you,  whether  being  or  nature.

the  st.  carnelians  aren't  wealthy,  but  they're  comfortable;  decades  of  the  same  family,  the  same  business  -  name  heard  across  the  fishing  ports  that  surround  their  town.  clothes  are  still  sewn  when  worn  out,  patched  lovingly  by  hand  with  every  hole,  every  tear.  a  heart  charm  hidden  within  every  sleeve,  affirmations  sewn  against  every  hem  as  if  spellwork.  they're  raised  to  have  their  own  ambitions,  their  own  dreams;  their  own  deities  to  pray  upon  -  their  own  paths  to  lead.  some  of  carnelian's  siblings  stay  close  to  town,  ambitions  tied  directly  to  their  family,  to  the  business  that  keeps  them  afloat.  others  leave  when  they  are  ready;  knowing  one  day  they'll  make  the  trek  back  home,  regardless  of  where  they  land.

carnelian's  fate  doesn't  lie  within  the  houseboat,  that  much  they  know  -  too  much  love  for  land,  despite  the  comforts  of  sea.  too  much  love  for  the  comfort  of  someone  else's  van  filled  with  more  smoke  than  air,  for  playing  80s  power ballads  in  their  school's  sports  hall  to  a  dwindling  crowd.  there's  a  life  out  there  carnelian  wants  to  live,  desperately,  despite  the  heaviness  that  cannot  help  but  collect  in  the  crevices  of  their  ribs  at  the  thought  of  leaving  home.

they  take  their  guitars  and  their  tarot  cards,  their  prized  vinyls  and  their  crystals,  the  hefty  scholarship  that  only  pushes  them  further  towards  some  semblance  of  a  dream  -  and  head  to  st.  cuthbert's.  it's  not  far,  yet  it's  still  too  much  of  a  distance;  homesickness  lodged  in  their  throat,  laced  in  their  words.  they  adapt  -  as  st.  germains  do  -  but  it  takes  time;  so  much  time.

double  majored  in  marine  conservation  and  sound  design;  carn's  days  are  split  between  palladian's  music  studios  and  forty  minute  commutes  to  the  dearest  shore,  music  theory  and  biology.  at  the  end  of  their  four  years,  it's  not  marine  conservation  they  keep  pursuing  -  not  fishing,  not  the  ocean;  it's  music.

spiritual  &  superstitious;  believes  in  spirits  caught  between  here  and  the  afterlife,  in  the  tales  of  one's  life  being  told  in  the  palm  of  their  hand,  in  the  power  of  the  stars  and  how  they're  a  deciding  factor  in  fate.  believes  in  salt  thrown  over  the  shoulder,  four  leaf  clovers  and  other  good  luck  charms,  in  saying  good  morning  to  a  lone  magpie;  in  other  superstitions  family  -  taught,  family  -  wary.

very  big  on  astrology  and  tarot  cards;  is  often  seen  shuffling  a  deck  and  offering  another  their  daily  card.  looks  to  the  stars  for  guidance,  the  cards  for  the  path  they  choose  everyday.

anxiety  /  drug  use;  believes  strongly  in  self  -  medication;  likes  the  feeling  of  melting  into  the  backseat  of  someone's  car,  or  into  their  couch,  or  dissolved  into  the  air.  says  it's  to  help  manage  their  anxiety  -  which  isn't  false!  it  never  stops  them,  not  completely;  but  it  does  hinder  them.  makes  it  harder  to  go  about  their  day  -  to  -  day  life.

the st. germains have lived in blackwater since the near - founding of the town; witchcraft born of the earth, their power was small but significant. once they made home in the mountains, the miner's luck increased; there were less animal attacks, better harvests. they've lived in the same house since the beginning; new sections built every year to accommodate their family's growth over the years.

somewhere in the 80's; their family grimoire - curated by their family for generations - was stolen by a rival family, an opposing coven. nothing more but a petty feud; the next generation of st. germains had to learn their magic from scratch.

anxiety; carnelian was born to that struggle, though their parents had made due with what was passed along via word and demonstration. their siblings - the lot of them - never seemed to struggle with their abilities. it came to them naturally, their specializations showing at a young age. carnelian was different; it wasn't so easy to them. their spells became laced with anxiety; tainted with it. things would go wrong; spell jars turning sour, fruit rotting off the trees.

while their magic was always weak - it strengthened considerably with the lunar cycle; the new moon was their enemy, but the full moon allowed them to channel it with relative ease. without the anxiety overpowering it. they began to practice in tandem with the moon, waning when it waned - waxing when it waxed. eventually, the stars begin to whisper down at them.

while their siblings are moving onto more ambitious things; ranging from recreating their family grimoire to getting it back from their rivals, to using their magic to help the community wherever they can - carnelian is talking to the stars. they guide their every decision; influence every magical decision. sometimes they feel like it's not the stars at all; but they push that feeling down. ignore it.

carnelian starts sleepwalking. it's subtle at first, waking up in different parts of the house. then outside. then across the street; then in the middle of the woods. each night it worsens until carnelian awakes atop a mountain, nothing but rocks beneath them.

carnelian often feels like a magician more than anything else, reduced to cheap tricks and illusions to keep their magic at bay. anything else - and they overdo it, overwrought with anxiety. they're one of the weaker st. germains, and while it's never been a competition - there's that constant want to do more.

Personality- With a true love & devotion to theatrics and the arts, he has the personality to match- loud, bombastic, & over-the-top! He loves putting on a show, thriving on the applause of the audience. He's gay and is in a relationship.

He has the standard abilities of a god. As the god of performance his other powers/abilities include having an audiographic memory, elasticity, limited pyrokinesis, fire immunity, smoke generation/manipulation, character imitation, performance art mastery, circus mastery, being able to control/manipulate stage lights, & the ability of omnitone (is able to generate sounds in any pitch or tone).

Matikós is a single father. He has one child- a son Thespios (god of acting).

He and his son live on the top floor of The Tauros Building, a luxury high rise apartment building located in the Mania neighborhood of New Olympus. One of his good friends Rhapso (goddess of sewing) helped with the interior design. Inside the color scheme is gold, black, dark violet, & bright carnelian red. On all of the windows hang gold trimmed velvet curtains while most of the flooring is black velvet carpeting. The living room has leather & velvet furniture, victorian inspired furniture pieces, as well as a crystal and diamond chandelier. The kitchen has an Imperial Gold popcorn machine, a gift from Zeus (god of the sky, thunder, & lightning). In Matikós' bedroom there's the latest iCHOR Tech smart flat screen TV, burgundy velvet carpeting, a dark mahogany four poster bed, decorative masquerade masks on the walls, & an Imperial Gold grandfather's clock.

Matikós and his son are dragonriders! Thespios' companion is a she-dragon named Ravenshade while Matikós' companion is a dragon named Anguis. The dragon has a serpentine body with speckled gold & dark red wings, gold horns, claws, and crests, & shimmering black scales. Anguis is often Matikós' primary mode of transportation as well as a featured act in the shows.

He's fluent in Latin, French, & Minoan.

Matikós starts off his mornings with an hour of stretching, meditation, and yoga.

He has a "no screen rule" implemented in the apartment for him, his son, & guests. No TV or phones while eating at the dinner table, giving the opportunity for undistracted conversations.

A typical breakfast for him is a homemade blackberry açaí smoothie bowl topped with fresh blackberries, unsweetened shredded coconut, chia seeds, & toasted pumpkin seeds. He's also fond of scrambled eggs (added with mushrooms, parsley, & peppers), Golly Grains caramel curls cereal, sliced papaya and mango (garnished with cayenne pepper & lime salt), and pao de queso- spread with butter.

Matikós always knew that he wanted to be a father. He went back and forth with the idea of adoption before finally settling on surrogacy. He came into contact with his son's eventual biological mother- a free-spirited & feisty maenad named Aida when he traveled to Thebes for the Dionysia holiday. They quickly bonded over their mutual love for wine and the performing arts. A few weeks later, the official process began.

Matikós was Aida's birthing coach & was present in the delivery room during his son's birth.

She even breastfed the baby for a few weeks before returning home.

He and Aida remained in touch, mainly through phone calls & she would send breastmilk for the baby. Matikós even sent her photos of Thespios throughout his childhood.

There are plans for his son to take a vacation to Thebes- where Thespios will stay with Aida and her girlfriend.

A go-to drink for him is a daiquiri. He also likes champagne, rum punch, p*rn star cocktails, red wine, manhattans, chocolate martinis, New Olympus Iced Teas, cuban almond cigar cocktails, a sex on the beach, red brandy sunsets, and cubatas. Usuals from Tne Roasted Bean includes a large iced tea & an olympian sized double chocolate chip creme frappuccino. He likes to make his own espressos and cappuccinos at home.

Outside his profession, he's very talented in interpretive & ballroom dancing.

Matikós and his son have a close relationship. He thought it was important to nuture and cultivate Thespios' interest in the performing arts. Every week they venture into the city to check out the latest film, play, musical, or opera. They also enjoy riding their dragons together! They really enjoyed traveling to the Underworld for the premier of the film Blooddancer- written & directed by Keres (goddess of violent death).

When he works out, he loves listening to classical music.

In the past he was a recreational user of lotus dust, mushrooms, as well as MDMA. Matikós stopped when it was confirmed that Aida was pregnant.

The peach & burrata caprese salad (topped with candied pecans & extra spicy honey dressing) is his favorite thing to get from The Bread Box.

Matikós income comes from his businesses- his burlesque lounge (located in the Skyline neighborhood) called Enchanté & his adult -centered circus called Mirage Menagerie. The circus is based in the city too (as he doesn't want to be far from his son)- having the realm's best performers of jugglers, clowns, acrobats, contortionists, knife throwers, tight rope walkers, stuntbeings, & fire eaters! Notable acts include the strength routine performed by conjoined twin cyclopes named Baron and Cosmo, the giantess Fantasia, & the nude painting duo (lotus eaters named Naima and Aster).

There has been a MAJOR new development in Matikós' career. He's been offered a year long residency with his performing circus at Acropolis Square Garden. He's still thinking about the offer.

Two of his most guilty pleasures are black olive & green pepper sicilian pizza and steamed lobster tails with lots of garlic butter!

His best friend in the entire pantheon is Felis (Titaness of cats). Matikós loves flying to Arcadia to see her and he made her Thespios' noná. They tell each other stuff that they don't share with anyone else, like Felis' growing feelings towards Koros (god of surfeit & disdain). On a night out, they love scouting the newest & hottest nighclub!

For the past decade, he's been in a committed relationship with a satyr named Silvano. Silvano plays the trumpet in a jazz band called The Gold Note Band. They first met at Yrgó Veloúdo- the smoking room/bar owned by Agathodaemon (Daemon) (god of vineyards, grainfields, & luck). Matikós was there with Felis while the band had a scheduled performance there. Under Felis' teasing & three glasses of red wine, he walked up to the handsome trumpet player, asking him for his number. The attraction was immediate and mutual with their first date being at a jazz club in the Lunar neighborhood of New Olympus.

Matikós loves everything about Silvano- his full lips, his adorably chubby belly, his curved brown horns, & his mesmerizing hooded olive green eyes.

He equally loves his boyfriend's family- with the two of them visiting Silvano's family in Athens.

He's not a musical snob, listening to a bit of everything. At the apartment, he has an extensive collection of vinyl records.

Matikós was Lyrikós' plus one at the Golden Laurel Awards where she performed with her daughter Aoide (goddess of voice & song).

Dragon Altar

I've been practicing some form of witchcraft or paganism for around 15 years and I've always loved in dragons in fiction - it makes sense that the two interests would intersect at some point. I put this altar together last week and included:

I know dragon magic isn't necessarily a pop culture practice, which is the focus of this blog, but I'll probably work off of pop culture lore (the Inheritance Cycle, Elder Scrolls, MTG, ASOIAF, etc.). A lot of the info I could find online had a heavy New Age/Wiccan influence, if anyone can point me in the direction of some more neutral resources I'd really appreciate it!

I am not trying to diminish Kinkajou's trauma but the fact that she had anyone to support her through the worst events of her life makes it a ton more logical that her personality would be less effected by it than the rest of her winglet, who all experienced traumas like abuse or neglect that was on-going and largely for the ENTIRETY of their lives up to the point of attending Jade Mountain.

I partially agree with this; what Kinkajou experienced was a single event and not a lifetime of abuse or neglect so it is different from what most of the Jade Winglet, or the DOD, experienced, and yes she had some support system, but she also very much did not have the support system she should have had, and it does come through in her characterization.

The core of Kinkajou's trauma isn't "I was kidnapped and tortured for weeks," it's "I was kidnapped and tortured for weeks and nobody in my life even cared enough to look for me." She directly calls Coconut out to his face for it, saying "Well, I thought he was my best friend," even though she was still trying to be upbeat about it, and what bothered her about being assigned a Nightwing cavemate wasn't so much the thing itself but that nobody checked that she was okay with it. Also while it's not like she talks about it all the time she was pretty quick to bring it up to Carnelian.

What Kinkajou does talk about all the time is how close she is to Glory, and to a lesser extent the other DOD, she's constantly trying to tell other dragons about how she's practically best friends with Glory. I've gotta confess that going through Arc 2 the first time I thought it was just attention-seeking and wanting her peers to think she's cool by association, but I'm rereading Moon Rising right now and I noticed that actually the way Kinkajou talks about Glory is really similar to how Qibli talks about Thorn and a little similar to how Peril talks about Clay although Peril's got so much else going on.

I think Kinkajou has a bit of the same hero-worship complex that Qibli and Peril have (and IMO Carnelian too but that's just speculation since Carnelian's backstory was never explored) where she's kind of latched onto Glory because Glory was the only dragon in the tribe who took the initiative to try to save her. It also seems like her trust in most of the other Rainwings was probably damaged by them leaving her for dead, and I think some of her attention-seeking behavior could be because of underlying insecurity about being ignored and invisible. This is almost entirely speculation but I think Kinkajou's kind of the opposite of Turtle: her deepest fear is that dragons she thought cared about her could just forget about her.

I truly don't like how people talk about Kinkajou on the internet like her not being irreparably damaged by her trauma forever makes her "uninteresting" or a badly written character. Being cheery and optimistic in the face of strife, despite clearly holding a self-awareness about her previous trauma as shown in how she thinks during Moon Rising, is what MAKES her interesting. I think sometimes people forget that not seeing a POV of a character does not immediately erase the internal logic that their character functions by. It's like when people claim Clay gets flanderized post Book 1-He doesn't, nothing about his writing changes, your perspective of him is just inherently limited because you are reading about what Other Characters Think of Him. It's the strongest element of Tui's characterization in her POVs but I think it leads to a lot of misjudgement about characters books outside of their own. Oh no! I didn't write today! But hummm here's a snippet of a future chapter of one of my fics!

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

I can't remember anything specific, but while reading a novel this week, I discovered that carnelian was considered to be some kind of jade in ancient China, despite not actually being jade. Made sense for Carnelian's and Jade's name.
